CHAPTER 9 — The Baby They Were Looking For

CHAPTER 9 — The Baby They Were Looking For

The floor opened beneath them.

Maya screamed.

Luka grabbed her before she could fall.

A section of wooden boards slid aside, revealing a narrow metal staircase descending into darkness.

Her mother stared at it in horror.

"No."

Maya looked at her.

"You know this place?"

Her mother didn't answer.

"Mom."

"I thought they destroyed it."

"Who built it?"

Her mother swallowed.

"Adrian."

Luka immediately raised his weapon.

"We're going down."

Maya stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because everyone outside expects us to run."

"And you think going underground is safer?"

"I think it's the only place they haven't searched."

Her mother shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"That's where M-17 began."

Outside, the vehicles remained motionless.

No one entered.

No one fired.

That frightened Maya more than an attack would have.

Luka pushed open the hidden door.

"Stay behind me."

They descended.

The door closed above them.

Darkness surrounded them.

Maya held Emma tightly.

Her daughter's eyes were open.

Too alert.

Too calm.

The strange symbol she had seen in her pupils was gone.

Maya tried to convince herself she'd imagined it.

Then Emma smiled.

A tiny, innocent smile.

Maya kissed her forehead.

"You're just a baby."

Her mother looked at her.

"That's exactly what they want you to believe."

Maya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Her mother pointed toward the walls.

"Look."

Small photographs had been mounted along the corridor.

Dozens of them.

Children.

Newborns.

Toddlers.

Teenagers.

Each photograph had a number beneath it.

M-01.

M-02.

M-03.

M-04.

...

M-16.

Maya stopped.

There was no M-17.

Luka raised his flashlight.

"Where is seventeen?"

Her mother whispered:

"At the end."

They continued walking.

At the very end of the corridor was one empty frame.

Beneath it was a single inscription.

M-17 — FINAL SUBJECT.

Maya's stomach tightened.

"That's Emma."

"No."

Her mother shook her head.

"That's you."

Maya stared.

"What?"

"M-17 was never a child."

She touched the empty frame.

"It was a designation."

"For what?"

"The completed sequence."

A door opened automatically.

Inside was a laboratory.

Old equipment covered the tables.

Glass containers stood beneath dusty lights.

Luka moved carefully.

"Nobody has been here for years."

Maya looked at the machines.

"They're still powered."

Her mother nodded.

"They never shut it down."

"Why?"

"Because someone kept monitoring the system."

Maya saw a screen.

A single line appeared.

SUBJECT DETECTED.

Then another.

GENETIC MATCH: 99.98%.

Then:

MATERNAL LINE CONFIRMED.

Maya's heart began racing.

"That's me."

Her mother shook her head.

"No."

The screen changed.

SECONDARY SUBJECT DETECTED.

Maya looked down at Emma.

"Her."

The screen flashed.

M-17 ACTIVATION: 100%.

The laboratory doors locked.

Luka spun around.

"What happened?"

A voice came through the speakers.

"Welcome home, Maya."

She froze.

Adrian Vale.

"You've been searching for me," the voice continued.

"Now you've found me."

Luka aimed at the ceiling.

"Show yourself."

A quiet laugh answered.

"Still violent, Luka."

"Come downstairs."

"I don't need to."

Maya stepped forward.

"What do you want?"

"I want my daughter."

Maya's blood ran cold.

"Your daughter?"

Adrian laughed softly.

"You've misunderstood."

"Then explain."

"The child isn't yours."

Maya held Emma tighter.

"She is my daughter."

"Biologically, yes."

"Then what are you talking about?"

"She was created for me."

Maya stared.

"No."

"Your pregnancy was monitored from the beginning."

Her mother's face collapsed.

"I tried to stop it."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"You failed."

Maya turned toward her mother.

"You knew?"

Her mother began crying.

"I knew they were watching."

"You never told me."

"I tried."

"When?"

"Every time I tried to reach you, they moved me."

Maya shook her head.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

"Everyone says that!"

Her voice echoed through the laboratory.

"I am sick of hearing it."

Silence.

Then Adrian spoke again.

"You should be angry."

Maya stared at the speaker.

"Why?"

"Because anger makes people honest."

Luka noticed something on the laboratory table.

A file.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

"Maya."

She walked over.

The first page carried her name.

MAYA BENNETT — SUBJECT M-17A.

The next page carried another.

EMMA BENNETT — SUBJECT M-17B.

Maya stared.

"Two subjects."

Luka turned the page.

There were dozens of medical reports.

Her pregnancy.

Every appointment.

Every blood test.

Every ultrasound.

Every medication.

Everything.

Someone had been watching her.

From the beginning.

Then Maya saw a note.

Pregnancy confirmed.

Below it:

Father unaware.

She looked at Luka.

"My husband didn't know."

"No."

Another line.

Daniel instructed to monitor pregnancy.

Maya closed her eyes.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Daniel's strange questions.

His concern about her appointments.

The way he always asked whether the doctor had performed additional tests.

He hadn't been jealous.

He had been reporting.

Maya's hands trembled.

"How long?"

Luka continued reading.

"Since the first ultrasound."

Maya's face hardened.

"Daniel knew."

Her mother whispered:

"He was ordered to."

"He could have told me."

"He was afraid."

"Everyone was afraid."

Maya threw the file onto the table.

"Nobody was afraid enough to tell me."

A hidden monitor suddenly activated.

A video appeared.

Daniel.

Alive.

Maya stopped breathing.

He was sitting in a dark room.

His face was bruised.

His voice was weak.

"Maya, if you're seeing this, I failed."

Maya stepped closer.

"Daniel."

The recording continued.

"I need you to understand something."

He looked directly into the camera.

"I didn't betray you because I wanted money."

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

"I did it because Adrian Vale threatened to kill you."

She shook her head.

"I was told you would die if I refused."

Daniel continued.

"Then you became pregnant."

He looked down.

"And everything changed."

Maya couldn't breathe.

"I realized they didn't want you."

"They wanted your child."

Daniel wiped blood from his lip.

"I tried to get you away from them."

"That's why I made you leave the city."

"That's why I changed your doctor's appointments."

"That's why I lied."

Maya whispered:

"You destroyed my trust."

Daniel's recorded voice cracked.

"I know."

He took a breath.

"But I was trying to save your life."

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

DANIEL PRICE — STATUS: DECEASED.

Maya covered her mouth.

Her knees weakened.

Luka caught her.

"He tried."

"I hated him."

"I know."

"I thought he sold us."

"He did."

Maya looked at him.

"Both things can be true."

Luka nodded.

A door opened at the opposite end of the laboratory.

A woman stepped inside.

Maya recognized her immediately.

Madeline Reed.

The woman who had appeared in the old photographs.

The woman who had worked with Ethan.

The woman who had paid Daniel.

Maya stared.

"You're the woman from the photograph."

Madeline smiled.

"I was."

"Who are you?"

"Your father's sister."

Maya froze.

"My aunt?"

Madeline nodded.

"And the first director of M-17."

Luka raised his weapon.

"You worked for Vale."

Madeline looked at him.

"I worked before Vale."

"Then who controls M-17?"

Madeline's smile disappeared.

"Nobody."

Maya frowned.

"What?"

"M-17 isn't controlled by a person."

"Then by what?"

Madeline pointed at Emma.

"Her."

Maya stared.

"No."

"Your daughter is the first complete carrier."

"She's a baby."

"Exactly."

Madeline stepped closer.

"She has no psychological resistance."

"No conditioning."

"No memories."

"Her brain is still developing."

Maya stepped in front of Emma.

"Don't come any closer."

Madeline stopped.

"We don't want to hurt her."

"You put her on a program."

"We protected her."

"You monitored me."

"Because you were the carrier."

Maya shook her head.

"Carrier of what?"

Madeline looked toward the monitor.

"An inheritance protocol."

Maya frowned.

"Explain."

"The original families created a biological key."

"A key?"

"Yes."

"To what?"

"Ownership."

Maya stared.

Madeline continued.

"Corporations can be transferred."

"Bank accounts can be forged."

"Documents can be destroyed."

"But biology cannot be negotiated."

Maya finally understood.

"The genetic sequence is the password."

Madeline nodded.

"Emma is the password."

Luka stepped forward.

"And who gets access?"

Madeline looked at him.

"Whoever possesses the original trust."

"Whose trust?"

"Moretti."

Luka's face changed.

"My family."

"Yes."

Maya looked at him.

"That's why Luka signed the birth certificate."

Madeline nodded.

"The moment he signed, the system recognized him as the legal father."

Maya's eyes widened.

"Then he accidentally activated the trust."

"Not accidentally."

Madeline looked toward the hidden camera.

"He was manipulated."

Luka's expression hardened.

"By whom?"

"Your father."

Maya looked at him.

"Ethan?"

Madeline nodded.

"He needed you to sign."

"Why?"

"Because only a Moretti male can initiate the succession."

Luka stared.

"So my signature..."

"Opened the door."

Maya looked at Emma.

"And now?"

Madeline's voice dropped.

"Now the trust is active."

A distant alarm sounded.

Madeline's face changed.

"What?"

She looked at the monitor.

A countdown had begun.

SUCCESSION PROTOCOL: 09:59

Maya stared.

"What happens at zero?"

Madeline whispered:

"The trust chooses an heir."

"Who?"

Madeline looked at Emma.

"The person genetically linked to the child."

Luka stepped forward.

"That's me."

"No."

Madeline shook her head.

"It isn't."

"Then who?"

The monitor changed.

A name appeared.

PRIMARY HEIR: MAYA BENNETT.

Maya stared.

"Me?"

Madeline nodded.

"The trust doesn't recognize Emma as the heir."

"It recognizes you."

"Why?"

"Because you are the first complete carrier."

Maya's heart pounded.

"But you said Emma was the first."

Madeline's expression changed.

"I said she was the first complete second-generation carrier."

Maya stared.

"Then what am I?"

Madeline answered:

"The original."

The laboratory doors suddenly opened.

Ethan entered.

His face was covered in blood.

He looked at Maya.

"Now you understand."

Maya stared at him.

"You made me."

"No."

"You experimented on me."

"No."

"Then what?"

Ethan's voice broke.

"You were born with it."

"Then why did you hide me?"

"Because Vale wanted to destroy you."

Maya shook her head.

"Why?"

"Because you were the only person who could stop him."

"How?"

Ethan looked at Emma.

"By giving birth to her."

Maya's blood ran cold.

"What?"

"Your pregnancy completed the sequence."

"That was your plan?"

"No."

He looked at her.

"That was your mother's."

Maya turned toward her mother.

She was crying.

"I didn't know it would happen."

Maya stared.

"You knew."

"I knew you carried M-17."

"You knew my child would inherit it."

"I hoped she wouldn't."

"But she did."

Her mother nodded.

"Yes."

Maya looked at Emma.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around Maya's thumb.

The baby smiled.

For a moment, everything became quiet.

Then the countdown reached:

00:30

Madeline looked at the screen.

"It's happening."

Luka asked:

"What?"

"The succession."

00:20

Maya stepped forward.

"How do I stop it?"

Nobody answered.

00:15

"Ethan!"

He looked at her.

"You created this."

"I can't stop it."

"Why?"

"Because the trust has already recognized you."

00:10

The lights flickered.

00:09

A massive vault door opened beneath the laboratory.

00:08

Inside was a wall of gold.

Documents.

Digital drives.

Account records.

And one sealed black box.

00:07

Luka stared.

"What is that?"

Ethan whispered:

"The original M-17 file."

00:06

Maya stepped toward it.

00:05

The box unlocked.

00:04

Inside was a photograph.

Maya picked it up.

Her hands began trembling.

It showed two newborn babies.

Twins.

One was Maya.

The other was a boy.

On the back was a name.

LUKA BENNETT.

Maya looked at Luka.

He stared at the photograph.

Neither of them could speak.

00:03

Then Maya noticed something else.

A red stamp across the photograph.

SUBJECT TRANSFERRED.

00:02

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

Transferred to Moretti family.

Maya's heart stopped.

Luka stared at her.

"My family didn't kill your brother."

"No."

Maya looked at the photograph.

"They took him."

00:01

The lights went completely black.

Then a voice came through every speaker in the facility.

Not Adrian Vale.

Not Ethan.

Not Madeline.

A voice Maya had never heard before.

"Welcome, M-17."

The lights returned.

Every screen displayed the same message:

HEIR CONFIRMED.

MAYA BENNETT.

Then another line appeared.

SECOND HEIR CONFIRMED.

LUKA MORETTI.

Maya stared.

Luka slowly looked at her.

And somewhere above them, the entire estate began to shake.

The succession had begun.

And for the first time, Maya understood the terrifying truth.

They hadn't spent twenty-five years protecting the baby they were looking for.

May you like

They had spent twenty-five years protecting the secret of who the baby would become.

To be continued.
