Chapter 1 – The Owner Walks In

Chapter 1 – The Owner Walks In
The silence inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit became almost unbearable.
Emma held her phone against her ear without taking her eyes off the two tiny incubators standing only a few feet away. Inside them, Noah and Elise fought battles no newborn should ever have to face. Their chests rose and fell in shallow, uncertain breaths while machines clicked and beeped around them like tireless guardians refusing to surrender.
Grant remained frozen near the doorway.
The confidence that had filled his face only moments earlier began to crack.
He forced a laugh.
"Emma," he scoffed, "are you seriously trying to scare me with some imaginary grandfather?"
Vanessa crossed her arms, recovering from her brief surprise.
"Oh, please," she said. "She's bluffing."
Emma never answered.
Instead, she listened calmly as the elderly voice on the other end of the phone became colder.
"I'm on my way."
The line disconnected.
Emma lowered the phone onto the blanket covering her legs.
Nothing more.
No threats.
No dramatic speech.
Just silence.
That silence unsettled Grant more than any scream could have.
The young NICU nurse standing beside Noah's incubator looked between Emma and the couple near the door.
She had witnessed difficult families before.
Parents overwhelmed by fear.
Grandparents arguing over treatment.
Custody disputes.
Nothing had prepared her for a father abandoning his wife and premature twins less than three days after an emergency delivery.
She quietly stepped beside Emma.
"Mrs. Carter..."
Emma looked up.
"Would you like me to call hospital administration?"
Emma smiled faintly.
"They're already coming."
The nurse frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Emma simply turned back toward her babies.
"You'll see."
Grant checked his watch.
"I don't have all day."
He extended his hand.
"The signed papers."
Emma handed him the folder.
He flipped through each page.
Every signature.
Every initial.
Perfect.
His smile returned.
"There."
He snapped the folder shut.
"That wasn't so difficult."
Vanessa leaned against him with a satisfied grin.
"I told you she'd give up."
Grant looked around the NICU one last time.
"You know..."
His voice carried through the quiet room.
"You always wanted children."
He nodded toward the incubators.
"Congratulations."
His expression hardened.
"You got exactly what you wanted."
Emma didn't answer.
He continued anyway.
"Except now you can raise them alone."
Several nurses exchanged horrified glances.
One respiratory therapist actually muttered under her breath.
"What kind of man says that?"
Grant ignored them.
"They'll probably need years of expensive medical care."
He shrugged.
"I'm not sacrificing my future."
Vanessa smiled sweetly.
"We're starting over."
Her hand rested possessively on the small curve of her own pregnancy.
"Our baby deserves better."
Emma slowly turned her head.
For the first time since they had entered, she looked directly into Vanessa's eyes.
"You think this is winning?"
Vanessa laughed.
"I know it is."
Emma nodded once.
"Then enjoy the next few minutes."
Outside the NICU...
A black luxury sedan rolled beneath the hospital entrance canopy.
Then another.
Then another.
Security cameras followed the vehicles automatically.
The hospital's front desk staff immediately stood.
Everyone recognized the lead car.
Not because of the license plate.
Because it almost never appeared without advance notice.
The elderly gentleman who stepped out rarely visited any hospital in person.
He owned too many.
Richard Ashford.
Chairman of the Ashford Healthcare Foundation.
Founder of Beacon Crest Medical Network.
One of the country's largest private healthcare systems.
The receptionist's eyes widened.
"Call Administration."
Another employee whispered,
"The Chairman is here..."
Within seconds...
Phones began ringing.
Department heads were interrupted.
Elevators were held.
Executives abandoned meetings.
Doctors received urgent messages.
The Chairman has arrived.
On the sixth floor...
The Director of Nursing stared at her phone.
"What?"
"The Chairman?"
"Here?"
She immediately left her office.
At the same time...
The hospital CEO nearly spilled his coffee.
"What do you mean no one scheduled this?"
"No security briefing?"
"No board meeting?"
"No inspection?"
Nobody knew.
Richard Ashford never made unannounced visits.
Never.
Which meant only one thing.
Something was terribly wrong.
Meanwhile...
Grant sighed impatiently.
"This is getting ridiculous."
He reached for Vanessa's hand.
"Let's go."
Just as they stepped into the hallway...
The elevator doors opened.
Eight uniformed security officers exited first.
Not hospital guards.
Executive security.
Behind them walked several men and women in tailored business suits carrying tablets and leather portfolios.
Then came the hospital CEO.
Beside him...
The Chief Medical Officer.
The Chief Legal Counsel.
The Director of Nursing.
Every employee they passed immediately stepped aside.
No one spoke.
No one breathed.
At the center of the group walked an elderly man with silver hair and a carved ebony cane.
Although nearly eighty years old...
His posture remained perfectly straight.
His sharp blue eyes surveyed the hallway with quiet authority earned over decades.
Richard Ashford.
He stopped outside the NICU doors.
His gaze landed on Emma through the glass.
Everything else disappeared.
The powerful businessman...
The billionaire.
The healthcare pioneer.
The feared chairman.
All of it vanished.
Only a grandfather remained.
His expression broke.
"My darling..."
Emma smiled for the first time in days.
"Hi, Grandpa."
Richard entered the room without another word.
He crossed directly to Emma's bedside.
His trembling hand gently brushed a loose strand of hair from her forehead.
He noticed the bruises on her arm.
The exhaustion beneath her eyes.
The pale skin.
The IV line.
Then he looked toward the incubators.
His great-grandson.
His great-granddaughter.
Tiny.
Fragile.
Alive.
Tears filled his eyes.
"You should have told me sooner."
Emma squeezed his hand.
"I wanted to believe I could fix my marriage."
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
"You never had to fight alone."
Behind them...
Grant stared in complete disbelief.
His mouth slowly opened.
He recognized the old man instantly.
Every entrepreneur in the state knew Richard Ashford.
Business magazines featured him constantly.
Medical journals praised him.
Television networks sought interviews with him.
Grant had attended conferences where people waited hours simply to shake the billionaire's hand.
His heartbeat accelerated.
"No..."
he whispered.
"No..."
Vanessa frowned.
"Grant?"
He ignored her.
His face drained of color.
Richard Ashford...
Emma's grandfather?
Impossible.
Emma had told him her grandfather preferred privacy.
Grant had assumed she meant an old retired schoolteacher living quietly somewhere in the countryside.
Not...
Him.
Richard finally turned around.
His warm expression disappeared.
His eyes settled on Grant.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees.
"So."
His voice was calm.
"You're the husband."
Grant swallowed.
"Mr... Mr. Ashford..."
Richard interrupted him.
"I asked one question before I came upstairs."
Everyone waited.
"I asked who had reduced my granddaughter to tears less than seventy-two hours after she nearly died giving birth."
Silence.
Richard's gaze shifted toward the leather folder tucked beneath Grant's arm.
"And I believe..."
His eyes narrowed.
May you like
"I've found my answer."
