Chapter 5 – The DNA of Betrayal

Chapter 5 – The DNA of Betrayal

The emergency board meeting began thirty-seven minutes after Grant left Beacon Crest Medical Center.

Normally, the executive conference room on the top floor of Carter Medical Supplies buzzed with confidence. Investors praised quarterly growth. Department heads celebrated new contracts. Grant occupied the head of the polished walnut table like a king sitting on his throne.

Today, the atmosphere was different.

No coffee.

No casual conversation.

No smiles.

Every chair was filled, yet the room felt strangely empty.

The directors weren't looking at Grant.

They were looking at the thick legal packets lying in front of them.

Each one carried the same logo.

ASHFORD HOLDINGS – LEGAL DIVISION

Grant threw his briefcase onto the table.

"Someone explain to me why everyone is acting like we've already lost."

No one answered.

Finally, the company's Chief Financial Officer, Linda Chen, cleared her throat.

"Because we may have."

Grant stared at her.

"What did you just say?"

Linda slid a document across the table.

"The court order freezing corporate assets became effective at 10:42 this morning."

"I know that."

"The banks received it."

"So we'll appeal."

She shook her head.

"We can't access payroll."

Grant frowned.

"What?"

"The accounts are frozen."

"The operating credit line is frozen."

"The acquisition fund is frozen."

She swallowed.

"Even executive expense accounts are frozen."

Silence settled over the room.

One board member rubbed his forehead.

"If payroll isn't released by Friday..."

"We'll lose employees."

Another director added quietly,

"Our suppliers have already started calling."

Grant slammed both hands on the table.

"This is temporary."

Linda hesitated.

"It depends."

"On what?"

She looked directly at him.

"Whether the allegations are true."

Grant looked around the room.

"You all know me."

No one spoke.

"You know how hard I worked."

Still silence.

Finally, Robert Hastings, the oldest board member, folded his hands.

"We know how hard Emma worked, too."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Robert leaned back.

"She attended almost every strategy meeting during the first two years."

Another director nodded.

"She negotiated the contract with St. Matthew's Hospital."

"The pediatric supply agreement."

"The Midwest distribution partnership."

Grant felt a chill run through him.

He had spent years allowing people to believe those successes belonged to him alone.

Now...

People were remembering.

Linda opened another folder.

"There's something else."

Grant exhaled sharply.

"What now?"

She slid a spreadsheet toward him.

"Our auditors compared original funding records."

Grant barely glanced at it.

"So?"

"The startup capital..."

She looked uncomfortable.

"...came almost entirely from Ashford entities."

Grant's expression darkened.

"I already know that."

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"You know they invested."

He tapped the document.

"You don't know how much."

Grant looked again.

The numbers blurred for a second before coming into focus.

Initial Investment

$4.8 million

Emergency Capital Injection – Year One

$2.1 million

Expansion Funding – Year Two

$6.4 million

Equipment Financing

$3.3 million

Research Development Grant

$5.2 million

Grant's mouth slowly opened.

Twenty-one million dollars.

He whispered,

"...That's impossible."

Linda answered softly.

"Without Ashford money..."

"There would never have been a Carter Medical Supplies."

Across the city...

Emma sat beside Noah's incubator.

Morning sunlight filtered gently through the NICU windows.

The room felt calmer now.

For the first time since giving birth, she wasn't afraid someone would burst through the door.

Richard stood beside the attending neonatologist reviewing medical charts.

"How are they?"

The doctor smiled.

"They had a stable night."

Emma released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

"And Noah?"

"His lungs are responding well."

"Elise?"

"She's stronger than her brother."

Richard chuckled quietly.

"Just like her mother."

Emma smiled for the first time that morning.

A soft knock interrupted the peaceful moment.

Daniel Whitmore entered carrying another sealed envelope.

"I'm sorry to disturb you."

Richard looked up.

"What is it?"

Daniel hesitated.

"The private investigator's preliminary report."

Emma frowned.

"Private investigator?"

Richard sighed.

"I hired one."

"When?"

"The day after your accident."

Emma looked confused.

"You thought the placental abruption wasn't natural?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I thought Grant's behavior afterward wasn't."

Emma fell silent.

Daniel opened the envelope.

"There are several findings."

Richard nodded.

"Go ahead."

"The affair between Mr. Carter and Ms. Vanessa Brooks did not begin six months ago."

Emma slowly looked up.

"It didn't?"

Daniel met her eyes.

"Our evidence suggests they have been involved..."

He turned another page.

"...for nearly two years."

The room became completely still.

Emma felt as though the air had disappeared.

Two years.

For two years...

While they were trying to have children.

While they celebrated anniversaries.

While he held her hand during fertility treatments.

While he cried after their first miscarriage.

He had already been sleeping with another woman.

Emma closed her eyes.

She remembered one particular evening.

Grant had arrived home late.

He smelled of unfamiliar perfume.

When she asked about it...

He smiled and kissed her forehead.

"Probably from one of the clients."

She had believed him.

Every single time.

Daniel continued carefully.

"There is more."

Emma opened her eyes again.

"I'm listening."

"Our investigators located several luxury apartments."

"Paid for through shell companies."

Richard frowned.

"For Vanessa?"

Daniel nodded.

"Vehicles."

"Vacations."

"Jewelry."

"Prenatal medical bills."

Emma whispered,

"Prenatal..."

Daniel looked at another page.

"Vanessa is approximately twenty-four weeks pregnant."

Emma instinctively calculated the dates.

Her heart sank.

Twenty-four weeks.

That meant...

Vanessa had become pregnant while Emma herself was already expecting Noah and Elise.

Grant hadn't merely cheated.

He had been building another family.

At the exact same time.

Richard quietly clenched his cane.

His voice became icy.

"So while my granddaughter was enduring a high-risk pregnancy..."

Daniel nodded once.

"Mr. Carter was attending prenatal appointments with Ms. Brooks."

Emma stared at the floor.

She felt no anger.

Only an overwhelming emptiness.

Meanwhile...

Grant sat alone inside his office.

His board meeting had ended in disaster.

Directors had postponed every major decision.

Investors demanded explanations.

Banks refused new financing.

His phone hadn't stopped ringing.

He ignored another incoming call.

Vanessa.

Again.

Finally, he answered.

"What?"

Her voice sounded unusually tense.

"We need to talk."

"I'm busy."

"No."

She spoke more firmly.

"You need to come."

Grant frowned.

"What happened?"

There was a long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered,

"I received a phone call."

"From who?"

"Someone claiming to represent Ashford Holdings."

Grant sat upright.

"What did they want?"

"They said..."

Her voice shook.

"...they have questions about my pregnancy."

Grant's blood ran cold.

"What questions?"

"They asked if I'd be willing to cooperate with a DNA investigation."

Silence.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, Grant laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

"Is it?"

Vanessa asked quietly.

Grant frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Another long silence followed.

When she finally spoke...

Her voice was barely audible.

"Grant..."

"I think we need to discuss something."

His grip tightened around the phone.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa began crying.

"I never wanted it to happen like this."

Grant's heart skipped a beat.

"What did you do?"

She couldn't answer immediately.

Only soft sobs came through the speaker.

Then...

"I wasn't seeing only you."

Grant felt the room spin.

"...What?"

"I thought..."

She struggled to breathe.

"...I thought the baby was yours."

His face drained of color.

"You thought?"

She cried harder.

"There was someone else."

The phone nearly slipped from Grant's hand.

"No..."

"I ended it months ago."

"You told me the baby was mine."

"I believed it was."

"You believed?"

Grant's shout echoed through his empty office.

Vanessa whispered the words that shattered the last illusion he still possessed.

"I don't know anymore."

Grant slowly lowered the phone from his ear.

Outside his office window, the city continued as though nothing had happened.

Inside...

His perfect future had begun to collapse.

His marriage was over.

His company was slipping away.

And now...

May you like

He wasn't even certain the child he had abandoned his family for was his own.
