Chapter 6 – A Billion-Dollar Mistake

Chapter 6 – A Billion-Dollar Mistake

Grant remained frozen in his office long after Vanessa ended the call.

The silence was unbearable.

His phone rested on the desk, the screen still glowing with the last words of their conversation.

Call Ended.

He replayed everything in his mind.

"I thought the baby was yours."

"There was someone else."

"I don't know anymore."

Only yesterday, he had imagined himself starting a perfect new family.

Now, the future he had sacrificed everything for had become nothing more than a question mark.

His chest tightened.

For the first time in years, he realized what true panic felt like.

A knock sounded on his office door.

Before he could answer, Linda Chen stepped inside.

Her usually composed expression was gone.

"We have another problem."

Grant laughed bitterly.

"Just one?"

Linda ignored the sarcasm.

"Our largest client has suspended its contract."

Grant frowned.

"Which one?"

"Mercy Regional."

His stomach dropped.

"They can't."

"They already have."

She handed him a printed email.

The first sentence was all he needed to read.

Effective immediately, Mercy Regional Health System is suspending all purchases from Carter Medical Supplies pending the outcome of ongoing legal and ethical investigations.

Grant looked up.

"This is because of Ashford."

Linda nodded.

"They own twenty-three percent of Mercy Regional."

Grant closed his eyes.

Of course they did.

Within the next hour, three more emails arrived.

Then five.

Then twelve.

Hospitals that had been loyal customers for years were postponing orders.

Investors requested emergency meetings.

Two board members resigned.

The company's stock, privately traded among institutional investors, plummeted in value.

Every notification felt like another brick falling from the walls of the empire Grant believed he had built.

Across town, the atmosphere inside Beacon Crest Medical Center was entirely different.

Emma sat in the newly prepared family suite overlooking the NICU.

The room was quiet, warm, and filled with sunlight.

Fresh flowers decorated the windowsill.

A comfortable chair had been placed beside each incubator so she could remain close to Noah and Elise at all hours.

Richard entered carrying two cups of tea.

"You haven't eaten."

Emma smiled faintly.

"I wasn't hungry."

He placed one cup beside her.

"You have two tiny people depending on you."

"I know."

She wrapped both hands around the warm mug.

"I'll try."

Richard watched his granddaughter carefully.

Despite everything she had endured, she hadn't asked a single question about Grant's company.

Not one.

She cared only about her children.

It reminded him painfully of Emma's mother.

Strong.

Kind.

Always placing others before herself.

Sometimes too much.

Daniel Whitmore knocked gently before entering.

"Sorry to interrupt."

Richard looked up.

"What is it?"

Daniel placed another folder on the table.

"The financial forensic team has completed its first report."

Emma sighed softly.

"More bad news?"

Daniel nodded.

"I'm afraid so."

He opened the folder.

"Our investigators traced every transfer made from the joint accounts."

Grant had emptied nearly every dollar the day before Emma gave birth.

But that wasn't the worst discovery.

Daniel slid a highlighted spreadsheet toward Richard.

"There were additional transfers."

Richard frowned.

"To whom?"

"Vanessa Brooks."

Emma's hands tightened around the teacup.

Daniel continued.

"Over the last twenty-two months."

He pointed to the totals.

Luxury apartment.

Designer jewelry.

Luxury vehicle lease.

International vacations.

Private medical care.

Cash transfers.

Richard slowly read the final number.

$3,842,617.

Nearly four million dollars.

Emma stared in disbelief.

"Where did he get that kind of money?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"From the company."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Corporate funds?"

Daniel nodded.

"Disguised as consulting expenses."

Emma whispered,

"He stole from his own business..."

Daniel corrected her.

"He stole from your business."

Silence settled over the room.

Richard finally looked toward Emma.

"My dear..."

"I'm sorry."

Emma looked confused.

"For what?"

"I introduced him to people who trusted my judgment."

She shook her head.

"No."

"You trusted him because I loved him."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I should have looked closer."

Emma reached over and squeezed his hand.

"You gave him every opportunity to become a better man."

She smiled sadly.

"He chose not to."

Meanwhile...

Vanessa sat alone in her luxury apartment.

The apartment suddenly felt much smaller.

Every expensive piece of furniture reminded her of Grant.

Every designer handbag.

Every painting.

Every diamond bracelet.

She picked up one necklace worth nearly fifty thousand dollars.

A gift from Grant.

At the time, it had made her feel special.

Now...

It felt heavy.

Almost dirty.

Her phone buzzed.

A text message.

Unknown Number

Ms. Brooks, this is Daniel Whitmore, legal counsel for Ashford Holdings. We would appreciate the opportunity to discuss several financial transactions involving your accounts. Your cooperation may significantly affect future legal proceedings.

Vanessa stared at the message.

Her heart raced.

She knew exactly what it meant.

They knew.

Or at least...

They knew enough.

Back at Carter Medical Supplies, Grant was fighting another battle.

His executive assistant rushed into the office.

"Grant..."

He barely looked up.

"What now?"

"The IRS."

His head snapped upward.

"What about them?"

"They've requested financial records."

Grant felt his pulse quicken.

"Why?"

"They cited irregular corporate expenditures."

Linda quietly added,

"They probably received a referral."

Grant looked at her.

"From Ashford?"

She nodded.

"It wouldn't surprise me."

The office phone rang.

Grant answered immediately.

"This is Grant."

"Mr. Carter."

The deep voice on the other end was unfamiliar.

"This is Judge Harrison's clerk."

Grant straightened.

"Yes?"

"The emergency hearing regarding Ashford Holdings versus Carter Medical Supplies has been moved forward."

"When?"

"Tomorrow morning."

"So soon?"

"The judge considers the matter urgent."

The line disconnected.

Grant slowly placed the receiver down.

Tomorrow.

Everything would begin tomorrow.

That evening...

Richard stood alone in the NICU, watching Noah sleep.

The tiny infant's fingers twitched beneath the blanket.

A neonatal nurse approached quietly.

"Mr. Ashford?"

He smiled warmly.

"Yes?"

"The twins are getting stronger."

Richard looked through the incubator glass.

"They're fighters."

The nurse nodded.

"They definitely inherited that from their mother."

Richard smiled proudly.

"I couldn't agree more."

Emma joined him moments later.

She gently slipped her hand into his.

"Grandpa?"

"Yes?"

She looked at Noah and Elise.

"I don't want revenge."

Richard turned toward her.

"I know."

"I only want justice."

He smiled.

"And justice is exactly what they'll receive."

The next morning dawned gray and cold.

Outside the county courthouse, dozens of reporters crowded behind barricades.

News vans lined the streets.

Camera crews adjusted their equipment.

No one had expected such an ordinary divorce to evolve into one of the biggest corporate legal battles of the decade.

Because it wasn't just a divorce anymore.

It was an investigation involving millions of dollars.

Corporate fraud.

Hidden ownership.

Misappropriated assets.

And one of the most influential families in the healthcare industry.

As Grant's black sedan pulled toward the courthouse, reporters surged forward.

Microphones stretched toward the windows.

Cameras flashed relentlessly.

Inside the vehicle, Grant loosened his tie with trembling hands.

His attorney looked over the latest court filings and quietly muttered,

"...My God."

Grant turned.

"What?"

The attorney slowly lowered the papers.

"Mr. Carter..."

His face had gone pale.

"There isn't just one lawsuit."

Grant frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

The attorney swallowed hard.

"Ashford Holdings has filed twelve separate civil actions against you."

Grant's heart skipped a beat.

"Twelve?"

The attorney nodded.

"Breach of fiduciary duty."

"Fraud."

"Conversion of corporate assets."

"Unjust enrichment."

"Financial concealment."

"Intellectual property theft."

"And..."

He hesitated.

Grant's voice cracked.

"And what?"

The attorney met his eyes.

"The combined damages..."

He paused.

"...exceed one billion dollars."

The words hung in the air.

One.

Billion.

Dollars.

Grant's world didn't merely begin to crumble.

May you like

It collapsed.
