Chapter 4 – Security Escort

Chapter 4 – Security Escort

Grant leaned heavily against the wall, his knuckles turning white as he struggled to process the words he had just heard.

All corporate assets have been frozen.

The sentence echoed through his mind like a judge's gavel.

It couldn't be happening.

Not today.

Not to him.

Only an hour earlier, he had walked into the NICU convinced he was leaving with everything—his company, his fortune, his freedom, and a new life with Vanessa.

Instead, every certainty he had built over the last three years had begun to collapse before his eyes.

"No..." he whispered, shaking his head. "There has to be some mistake."

Daniel Whitmore closed the legal file with a quiet click.

"The court doesn't issue emergency injunctions based on mistakes, Mr. Carter."

Grant looked desperately at Emma.

"You did this."

Emma's tired eyes met his.

"No."

"You did."

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

Only the steady rhythm of the heart monitors surrounding Noah and Elise filled the room.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The sound reminded everyone why they were there.

Two innocent newborns were fighting for their lives.

Yet their father had spent the morning fighting over money.

Richard Ashford finally broke the silence.

"This conversation is over."

He turned toward the Head of Hospital Security.

"Mr. Alvarez."

The broad-shouldered security chief stepped forward immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Chairman."

Richard's voice remained calm.

"Escort Mr. Carter and his companion from this hospital."

Grant looked up sharply.

"You can't throw me out."

Richard didn't even blink.

"I can."

"I am the father."

"You are."

Richard nodded.

"But at this moment..."

His gaze hardened.

"...you are also a man who entered a restricted neonatal unit without authorization, emotionally harassed a critically ill patient, and disrupted medical care."

He paused.

"You are no longer welcome inside this building."

Grant laughed bitterly.

"This is abuse of power."

Richard tilted his head.

"No."

"This is accountability."

Mr. Alvarez motioned toward two security officers.

They approached politely.

"Mr. Carter."

"Ms. Brooks."

"We'll escort you to the lobby."

Grant didn't move.

"I said no."

The officers remained perfectly composed.

"This isn't a request."

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"You can't embarrass us like this!"

One of the NICU nurses couldn't hide her disbelief.

"Embarrass you?"

She spoke before anyone could stop her.

"You walked into intensive care wearing another woman's maternity coat while her premature babies were fighting to survive."

Her voice trembled with anger.

"And you're worried about embarrassment?"

Vanessa's face turned crimson.

"I wasn't talking to you."

"No," the nurse replied.

"You were talking about babies as though they were inconveniences."

Another nurse nodded in agreement.

"We all heard it."

The room grew uncomfortably quiet.

Vanessa realized something she hadn't considered.

Every person in the NICU had witnessed their behavior.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Respiratory therapists.

Technicians.

Parents visiting their own infants.

Dozens of witnesses.

Grant pointed toward Emma.

"She manipulated everyone."

Emma simply looked at him.

"You told me to find a shelter."

Grant opened his mouth.

She continued.

"You canceled my credit cards while I was recovering from emergency surgery."

His face tightened.

"You emptied our accounts before I even woke up."

He looked away.

"You called Noah and Elise..."

She struggled to keep her voice steady.

"...a burden."

No one in the room looked at Grant anymore.

They looked at him with disgust.

Richard watched silently.

He had spent fifty years building hospitals.

He had seen brilliant surgeons.

Compassionate nurses.

Extraordinary scientists.

But he had also learned something else.

Character revealed itself during crisis.

Grant had revealed his.

"Escort them."

Richard repeated quietly.

Mr. Alvarez nodded.

"Please."

Grant finally pushed away from the wall.

"This isn't over."

Daniel Whitmore smiled faintly.

"No."

"It certainly isn't."

As the group walked into the hallway, more hospital employees had gathered.

News traveled astonishingly fast inside medical buildings.

Whispers followed them.

"Is that him?"

"The husband?"

"I heard he served divorce papers in the NICU."

"While his twins are in incubators?"

"Unbelievable."

Grant kept walking, his jaw clenched.

Every whispered sentence felt like another stone tied around his neck.

Vanessa lowered her head, hoping no one recognized her.

Too late.

Several employees had already taken notice of the ivory maternity coat folded awkwardly over her arm.

The elevator doors opened.

As everyone stepped inside, another group emerged.

Members of the hospital board.

They immediately greeted Richard.

"Mr. Chairman."

Richard acknowledged them with a nod before turning back toward Emma.

"I'll only be a few minutes."

Emma smiled gently.

"I know."

The elevator descended slowly.

Inside, the silence was suffocating.

Grant finally spoke.

"This family is insane."

Vanessa didn't answer.

He looked at her.

"Say something."

She stared at the floor.

"You never told me."

"Told you what?"

"That Emma's grandfather owns the hospital."

"I didn't know."

"You said she came from nothing."

Grant's voice grew defensive.

"That's what I believed."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You believed."

She looked at him.

"Or you never cared enough to find out."

The elevator doors opened into the main lobby.

What Grant saw made him stop walking.

Every executive in the building seemed to be standing there.

Department heads.

Senior physicians.

Administrative directors.

Board members.

They had formed two respectful lines leading toward the entrance.

Not for Grant.

For Richard Ashford.

Employees stood silently, waiting for the chairman to pass through after finishing upstairs.

Grant suddenly understood something terrifying.

Emma hadn't exaggerated.

Her family truly owned this place.

One of the security officers gestured toward the exit.

"This way."

Grant refused to move.

"I want my lawyer."

Daniel stepped out of the elevator behind them.

"You already have one."

Grant frowned.

"What?"

"The attorney who prepared your divorce papers."

Grant nodded impatiently.

"So?"

Daniel's expression remained calm.

"He resigned this morning."

Grant blinked.

"What?"

"He discovered material information had been intentionally withheld."

Grant felt another wave of panic.

"He can't resign."

"He already has."

Daniel handed him a business card.

"I suggest finding new representation."

Outside, reporters had begun gathering near the hospital entrance.

Nobody knew the full story yet.

Only that Richard Ashford had made an unexpected visit to Beacon Crest Medical Center.

Whenever the billionaire appeared without warning...

Something significant had happened.

Camera crews adjusted their equipment.

Photographers prepared their lenses.

Grant froze.

"No..."

Mr. Alvarez opened the front doors.

Sunlight flooded into the lobby.

Flashes immediately exploded.

Cameras turned.

Microphones lifted.

Reporters began shouting questions.

"Mr. Carter!"

"Why is hospital security escorting you out?"

"Is there a dispute with Mr. Ashford?"

"Were divorce papers served inside the NICU?"

"Can you confirm reports involving premature twins?"

Grant shielded his face.

"Move!"

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Get us out of here!"

The security officers maintained a professional distance, ensuring the media couldn't block the entrance.

They didn't answer a single question.

Neither did Grant.

For the first time in years...

He ran.

High above the entrance, Emma stood near the NICU window.

She watched silently as the black SUV carrying Grant and Vanessa sped away from the hospital.

Richard walked beside her.

"You don't look happy."

Emma shook her head.

"I'm not."

"You won."

She looked down at Noah and Elise sleeping peacefully inside their incubators.

"Did I?"

Richard remained quiet.

Emma continued softly.

"My children still don't have a father."

Those words struck Richard harder than anything Grant had said all morning.

He slipped an arm gently around his granddaughter's shoulders.

"You cannot choose the man who failed them."

He looked lovingly at the twins.

"But you can choose the family that never will."

Emma rested her head against his shoulder.

For the first time since giving birth...

She allowed herself to cry.

Not because she had lost her marriage.

Not because she had lost her home.

But because she had finally accepted the truth.

The man she had loved was gone.

Perhaps...

He had never existed.

Across the city, inside the speeding SUV, Grant stared blankly out the window.

His phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

Ten times.

Twenty.

The screen filled with notifications.

BANK ACCOUNT ALERT

LEGAL NOTICE

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

URGENT: INVESTOR REQUEST

Then another message appeared.

It was from his executive assistant.

Grant, several clients are canceling meetings. News is spreading that Ashford Holdings has initiated legal action. The board is demanding an emergency conference within the hour. We have a serious problem.

Grant slowly lowered the phone.

He had walked into the hospital believing he was ending one chapter of his life.

Instead...

May you like

He had unknowingly opened the first page of his downfall.
