Chapter 8 – Vanessa's Secret

Chapter 8 – Vanessa's Secret
The courtroom fell silent as the next witness walked toward the stand.
Her black blazer was simple, her hair neatly tied back, and her expression carried none of the uncertainty that had marked the earlier witnesses.
She looked calm.
Prepared.
Resolved.
Grant's pulse quickened.
He knew that look.
Olivia Parker had worked as his executive assistant for almost four years.
She knew every meeting.
Every business trip.
Every private dinner.
Every last-minute schedule change.
And, more dangerously...
She knew which appointments had never appeared on the company's official calendar.
She took the oath without looking in Grant's direction.
Daniel Whitmore approached the witness stand.
"Ms. Parker, how long were you employed by Carter Medical Supplies?"
"Three years and eleven months."
"What were your responsibilities?"
"I managed Mr. Carter's calendar, travel arrangements, executive correspondence, and confidential scheduling."
Daniel nodded.
"Were you instructed to maintain two separate calendars?"
Olivia answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
A murmur swept through the courtroom.
Marcus Ellison stood immediately.
"Objection."
Daniel remained calm.
"Your Honor, the witness is answering a factual question."
Judge Harrison nodded.
"Overruled."
Daniel turned back to Olivia.
"Please explain."
Olivia folded her hands.
"There was an official corporate calendar."
"And another."
"What was the second calendar used for?"
She finally glanced toward Grant.
"Personal meetings that Mr. Carter instructed me never to disclose."
Daniel displayed a document on the courtroom monitor.
"Do you recognize this?"
"Yes."
"It's a copy of the private calendar."
The screen filled with appointments.
Dinner – V.B.
Weekend Retreat – Aspen
Prenatal Appointment
Apartment Visit
Private Dinner – Harbor House
Each entry stretched back nearly two years.
Gasps echoed through the courtroom.
Grant lowered his head.
Daniel continued.
"Were these meetings hidden from Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes."
"Did Mr. Carter specifically instruct you to conceal them?"
Olivia nodded.
"He told me to delete emails after confirming reservations."
Grant closed his eyes.
He remembered saying exactly that.
"Delete everything after we're done."
He had believed digital trails disappeared forever.
He had underestimated both backups...
and people with consciences.
Daniel thanked Olivia before turning to the judge.
"The plaintiffs request permission to introduce additional evidence."
Judge Harrison nodded.
"Proceed."
Daniel opened another folder.
"This evidence concerns Ms. Vanessa Brooks."
The courtroom became noticeably quieter.
Vanessa, seated behind Grant with her own attorney, stiffened.
Daniel looked toward her.
"Ms. Brooks, would you please take the stand?"
Her attorney leaned toward her.
"You don't have to answer questions that may incriminate you."
Vanessa swallowed.
"I understand."
She slowly walked to the witness stand.
She looked nothing like the confident woman who had walked into the NICU wearing Emma's maternity coat.
Dark circles shadowed her eyes.
Her hands trembled as she took the oath.
Daniel approached gently.
"Ms. Brooks, how long have you known Mr. Carter?"
"About three years."
"When did your romantic relationship begin?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she quietly answered,
"Almost two years ago."
The admission sent another wave of whispers through the courtroom.
Grant stared at her in disbelief.
He hadn't expected her to tell the truth.
Daniel nodded.
"Did Mr. Carter tell you he intended to leave his wife?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"He said he was waiting for the right time."
Daniel looked at another document.
"Did that 'right time' happen after Mrs. Carter became pregnant with twins?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"...Yes."
"So he planned to leave her while she was carrying his children."
"...Yes."
Grant whispered,
"Vanessa..."
She didn't look at him.
Daniel paused before asking his next question.
"Ms. Brooks..."
"You are currently pregnant."
"Yes."
"You previously informed Mr. Carter that he was the father."
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"...Yes."
Daniel waited.
"Is that statement still certain?"
Her attorney shifted uneasily.
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
Silence stretched across the courtroom.
Everyone waited.
Finally...
"No."
The word barely rose above a whisper.
Daniel spoke softly.
"Please explain."
Tears gathered in Vanessa's eyes.
"I believed he was."
"But..."
She struggled to continue.
"I had recently ended another relationship."
"The dates..."
Her voice cracked.
"...overlap."
The courtroom remained utterly still.
Grant's face turned ghostly white.
Daniel didn't raise his voice.
"Have you undergone a paternity test?"
"No."
"Would you object to one?"
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
"No."
Grant suddenly stood.
"This is irrelevant!"
Judge Harrison struck her gavel.
"Sit down, Mr. Carter."
"My personal life has nothing to do with this case."
Daniel turned calmly toward him.
"Actually, it does."
Grant frowned.
Daniel continued.
"Your Honor, Mr. Carter transferred nearly four million dollars in corporate funds to support what he believed was his future family."
He looked at Grant.
"If those transfers were based on knowingly concealed facts..."
He paused.
"...they become highly relevant."
Judge Harrison nodded.
"The objection is overruled."
Grant collapsed back into his chair.
Daniel looked once more at Vanessa.
"Did Mr. Carter know there was another possible father?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"No."
"Why not?"
"I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"That he'd leave me too."
Silence.
The answer lingered in the air.
Emma wasn't in the courtroom.
But had she been there...
She might have recognized the bitter irony.
The woman who helped destroy her marriage had spent months living in fear of exactly the same betrayal.
During the lunch recess, reporters flooded the courthouse steps.
Microphones surrounded legal analysts.
One headline spread across every major news outlet within minutes.
BREAKING: MISTRESS ADMITS UNCERTAINTY OVER BABY'S PATERNITY.
Another appeared moments later.
FORMER CEO KEPT SECRET CALENDAR TO HIDE TWO-YEAR AFFAIR.
Social media exploded.
Public sympathy shifted even further toward Emma.
Back at Beacon Crest Medical Center, Emma remained blissfully unaware of the latest courtroom revelations.
She sat beside Elise's incubator reading softly from a worn children's book.
"...and the little rabbit said, 'Tomorrow will be brighter.'"
Her voice was gentle.
Steady.
The neonatal nurse smiled.
"They love hearing you."
Emma laughed quietly.
"They can't even understand the story."
"They understand your heart."
Richard watched from the doorway.
For a moment, he forgot about lawsuits.
Forgot about billion-dollar claims.
Forgot about Grant.
All he saw was his granddaughter becoming the mother she had dreamed of being.
Daniel returned to the hospital late that afternoon.
Richard met him outside the family suite.
"How did it go?"
Daniel smiled faintly.
"The truth is becoming difficult to hide."
Richard nodded.
"And Vanessa?"
Daniel hesitated.
"I think she's carrying more secrets than she admitted today."
Richard frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Our investigators found something unusual."
He handed Richard a sealed envelope.
"It concerns the other man."
Richard opened the first page.
His expression slowly hardened.
"This can't be right."
Daniel nodded.
"We verified it twice."
Richard looked toward Emma through the glass.
She was smiling at Noah, completely unaware of the storm still gathering around her.
Then Richard looked back at the report.
If it was accurate...
Vanessa's uncertain paternity wasn't the biggest secret she had been hiding.
Not even close.
Because the unidentified man from her past...
Wasn't unidentified anymore.
He had a name.
A name Richard Ashford recognized immediately.
And if that name became public...
It wouldn't just destroy Grant's remaining pride.
May you like
It would shake one of the most powerful business families in the country.
