Chapter 2 – The Chairman's Granddaughter

Chapter 2 – The Chairman's Granddaughter

Grant's fingers tightened instinctively around the leather folder.

For the first time in years, words deserted him.

The corridor outside the NICU had become eerily quiet. Nurses, physicians, administrators, and security officers stood motionless, their eyes shifting between the chairman of Beacon Crest Medical Network and the young woman lying in the hospital bed.

Emma Ashford.

The name suddenly carried a weight no one had imagined.

Richard Ashford took one slow step toward Grant.

"You addressed my granddaughter by her married name," he said evenly. "Allow me to correct the record."

His gaze swept across the room.

"She is Emma Ashford."

The words landed like thunder.

The hospital CEO's eyes widened.

Several nurses exchanged stunned glances.

One of the pediatric residents whispered under her breath.

"Ashford... as in the Ashford?"

The Director of Nursing nodded almost imperceptibly.

"There is only one."

Vanessa forced a nervous laugh.

"This... this has to be some misunderstanding."

Richard turned his attention to her.

His expression remained unreadable.

"And you are?"

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I'm Grant's fiancée."

The room fell silent again.

Richard looked at Emma.

"Your divorce has already been finalized?"

Emma answered calmly.

"He brought the papers less than twenty minutes ago."

Richard's eyes returned to Vanessa.

"So, while my granddaughter was recovering from emergency surgery and her premature twins were fighting for their lives..."

He paused.

"...you felt this was an appropriate place to announce your relationship."

Vanessa's confidence faltered.

"We—we didn't mean—"

"You wore her coat."

Vanessa instinctively wrapped the ivory maternity coat tighter around herself.

Richard recognized it immediately.

He had commissioned it himself after learning Emma was expecting twins.

The inside lining had been embroidered with tiny silver letters.

N.E.

Noah.

Elise.

His gifts always carried meaning.

Vanessa had no idea she was wearing one.

Richard extended his cane slightly.

"Take it off."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

"The coat."

His voice never rose.

Yet every syllable carried authority.

"It does not belong to you."

Grant finally found his voice.

"Mr. Ashford, I think this situation is becoming unnecessarily emotional."

Richard looked at him.

"You believe emotion is the problem?"

Grant straightened his expensive suit.

"I'm simply trying to move on with my life."

Richard nodded once.

"And your newborn children?"

Grant hesitated.

"I'll fulfill my legal obligations."

Emma closed her eyes.

The words hurt less than she expected.

Perhaps because she had already accepted that the man she married no longer existed.

Or perhaps...

He had never existed at all.

Richard turned toward the hospital CEO.

"Michael."

The CEO stepped forward immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Chairman."

"Has Mr. Grant Carter been granted unrestricted access to this neonatal intensive care unit?"

"No, sir."

"Was his companion listed as an approved visitor?"

"No, sir."

Richard's voice remained composed.

"Then why was she allowed inside a restricted medical area?"

The CEO's face paled.

"I... I'll investigate immediately."

"No."

Richard raised one hand.

"You'll do more than investigate."

He looked toward the Head of Security.

"Review every camera from the last seventy-two hours."

"Yes, sir."

"If policies were ignored because someone assumed the rules did not apply to them..."

He glanced at Grant.

"...I want names."

The security chief nodded without hesitation.

"It will be done."

Grant suddenly realized something terrifying.

No one in the room was looking at Richard as merely an influential donor.

They were taking orders.

Immediately.

Without discussion.

Without hesitation.

This wasn't ceremonial authority.

This was ownership.

Richard walked toward Noah's incubator.

His weathered hand rested gently against the clear plastic.

"So small..."

His voice softened.

"So brave."

He smiled sadly at the sleeping infant.

"You have your mother's courage."

Emma felt tears gather in her eyes.

For the first time since giving birth, someone wasn't talking about lawyers...

or money...

or inconvenience.

Someone was talking about her children as miracles.

The neonatologist quietly approached.

"Mr. Ashford."

Richard looked up.

"Doctor."

"The twins remain stable."

Richard nodded.

"What do they need?"

The physician hesitated.

"Nothing is being withheld, sir."

"That wasn't my question."

The doctor smiled faintly.

"They need time."

Richard looked back at the incubators.

"Then they'll have all the time in the world."

Grant shifted uncomfortably.

"I don't see why any of this concerns the hospital."

Richard slowly turned.

"You don't?"

Grant shook his head.

"Our divorce is personal."

Richard smiled.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

"You walked into my intensive care unit."

"My?"

Grant echoed before he could stop himself.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Yes."

"My hospital."

He gestured toward the ceiling.

"This building."

"The children's hospital across town."

"The oncology center."

"The rehabilitation institute."

"The medical research campus."

"They all answer to this network."

Grant's heartbeat thundered.

Richard took another step.

"And today..."

He looked directly into Grant's eyes.

"...you chose my hospital as the stage on which to humiliate my granddaughter."

Vanessa quietly slipped the maternity coat from her shoulders.

She folded it carefully and held it out.

"I'm... sorry."

Emma accepted the coat without speaking.

Her fingers brushed over the embroidered initials hidden inside.

Noah.

Elise.

She remembered crying when her grandfather had surprised her with it at her baby shower.

He had hugged her and whispered,

"My great-grandchildren deserve the warmest welcome in the world."

Now those same initials reminded her why she had to remain strong.

Not for revenge.

For them.

Richard addressed the Director of Nursing.

"Prepare a private family suite adjoining the NICU."

The director nodded immediately.

"It will be ready within the hour."

"I also want two additional neonatal specialists reviewing the twins' treatment plan."

"Already arranging it."

"And assign dedicated security outside this unit."

Grant frowned.

"Security?"

Richard answered without looking at him.

"My granddaughter will not be disturbed again."

Grant finally stepped forward.

"Mr. Ashford, surely we can discuss this like businessmen."

Richard looked almost amused.

"You believe we're peers?"

Grant swallowed.

"I own Carter Medical Supplies."

A faint chuckle escaped several executives.

Grant noticed.

Confusion flashed across his face.

Richard's legal counsel opened a tablet.

"Mr. Carter..."

she said politely.

"According to our preliminary review..."

"...that ownership may not be as secure as you believe."

Grant frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Emma finally spoke.

"It means..."

She met his eyes.

"...you forgot who funded your dream."

His stomach tightened.

Emma continued.

"The first manufacturing equipment."

"The warehouse."

"The startup capital."

"The operating loans."

"My family financed all of it."

Grant laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

Emma shook her head.

"You never asked where the money came from."

"You only cared that it arrived."

Richard's smile vanished.

"And unlike you..."

"We keep records."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Grant suddenly remembered every contract Emma had signed without explanation.

Every wire transfer she had described as "family investments."

Every conversation she had quietly ended whenever he asked about her grandfather.

He had assumed she trusted him completely.

Now he realized...

She had simply honored her grandfather's request for privacy.

Richard rested both hands on his cane.

"My attorneys are reviewing every transaction connected to your company."

Grant's confidence finally shattered.

"You can't do that."

Richard's eyebrows rose.

"I already have."

Grant looked desperately toward Emma.

"You wouldn't."

She stared back with calm, tired eyes.

"I begged you to stay beside your children."

"You chose money."

"I begged you to visit us."

"You chose her."

She nodded toward Vanessa.

"I almost died."

"You stayed ten minutes."

Grant opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Emma's voice remained heartbreakingly steady.

"You mistook kindness for weakness."

"You mistook silence for surrender."

She glanced lovingly at Noah and Elise.

"But today..."

Her eyes met his one final time.

"...you made the greatest mistake of your life."

Outside the NICU, another elevator chimed.

Three impeccably dressed attorneys from Ashford Holdings stepped into the hallway, briefcases in hand.

The lead attorney looked toward Richard and gave a respectful nod.

"Mr. Chairman."

"We've completed the initial review."

Richard didn't take his eyes off Grant.

"And?"

The attorney opened a thick file.

"The findings are... significant."

Grant felt the blood drain from his face.

His downfall had just begun.
