CHAPTER 11 — THE EVIDENCE

CHAPTER 11 — THE EVIDENCE
The private jet disappeared into the clouds before Dominic reached the runway.
He stood beneath the rain, staring at the empty sky.
For seventeen years, he had believed his father was dead.
Now he knew better.
Adrian Vale was alive.
His daughter had been taken.
Claire's identity was a lie.
And somewhere in Lisbon, the people who had controlled their lives were preparing the final move.
Marcus approached him.
"Boss."
Dominic didn't turn.
"Get me a plane."
"We have one ready."
"How fast?"
"Forty minutes."
"Make it twenty."
Marcus nodded.
Then he hesitated.
"There is something else."
Dominic finally looked at him.
"What?"
"We found this in Samuel's coat."
Marcus handed him a small evidence bag.
Inside was a key.
Not gold.
Not silver.
Black.
Engraved with a single letter.
E.
Claire stepped closer.
"Elena."
Dominic shook his head.
"Maybe."
She looked at the key.
"Or evidence."
They returned to the library.
Mia was waiting.
Her face was pale.
She hadn't stopped crying since the call from the airport.
"Isabella..."
Dominic put a hand on her shoulder.
"We'll get her back."
Mia looked at Claire.
"There's something you need to know."
Claire stiffened.
"What?"
Mia took a breath.
"Samuel wasn't just Adrian's lawyer."
Dominic frowned.
"Then what was he?"
"His archivist."
"Archivist?"
"He kept records Adrian couldn't trust anyone else with."
Mia looked at the black key.
"That key opens the archive."
Dominic stared at it.
"Where?"
Mia whispered:
"Under the old Vale courthouse."
Claire frowned.
"That building was demolished."
"Not completely."
Mia shook her head.
"The public building was demolished."
She pointed toward the floor.
"The archive was never above ground."
Two hours later, Dominic stood before a condemned building in the center of town.
Rain dripped from the broken roof.
Marcus had brought six men.
Dominic looked at him.
"No one comes inside except us."
Marcus nodded.
Claire followed Dominic through the ruined lobby.
A rusted elevator stood at the back.
It shouldn't have had power.
But when Dominic inserted the black key, the doors opened.
The elevator descended.
One floor.
Two.
Three.
Then continued.
Claire watched the numbers.
"There are no basement levels on the property records."
Dominic nodded.
"That's the point."
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
A long corridor stretched ahead.
Every wall was covered with filing cabinets.
Thousands of them.
Years of secrets.
Names.
Accounts.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Dominic walked slowly.
"How long did Adrian keep this?"
Mia answered:
"Twenty years."
Claire looked around.
"Then everything is here."
"Maybe."
Dominic found a desk.
A computer screen flickered on.
A message appeared.
WELCOME HOME, DOMINIC.
He froze.
Claire stared at the screen.
"Adrian knew we'd come."
Dominic sat down.
The system asked for a password.
He tried his father's name.
Rejected.
His mother's name.
Rejected.
His birthday.
Rejected.
Claire stepped closer.
"Try mine."
Dominic looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because if this was designed for the family..."
He typed:
CLARA.
The system unlocked.
Dominic stared.
Claire's face went pale.
"It knew me."
The screen displayed a folder.
PROJECT MIRROR.
Dominic opened it.
The first document contained one sentence:
CLARA WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE THE HEIR.
Claire swallowed.
Dominic scrolled.
A photograph appeared.
A six-year-old girl.
Claire.
Beside her stood another child.
A baby.
Isabella.
The caption read:
SUBJECT A — CLARA
SUBJECT B — ISABELLA
Claire whispered:
"Subject."
Dominic continued.
The next page contained medical records.
MEMORY ALTERATION: SUCCESSFUL.
Claire stumbled backward.
"No."
Mia looked away.
Dominic turned.
"You knew about this."
Mia shook her head.
"Not all of it."
"What did you know?"
"That Nathan had taken Claire's memories."
"But not why?"
"No."
Dominic looked at the screen.
The next file was marked:
TRUTH CONDITIONING.
He opened it.
A recording began.
Adrian appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably alive.
"Dominic, if you're seeing this, you've reached the archive."
Dominic stared.
His father's face filled the screen.
"I know you'll hate me."
Dominic whispered:
"You're right."
Adrian continued.
"I made choices that destroyed lives."
Claire watched silently.
"To protect Isabella, I created Clara."
Dominic's expression changed.
"You created her identity."
"Yes."
"You destroyed her memories."
Adrian looked down.
"Yes."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Why?"
Adrian answered:
"Because Nathan needed a target."
The recording continued.
"Gabriel believed the Vale heir was a child named Isabella."
"But he didn't know which child."
"So you created another child."
Adrian nodded.
"Clara."
Claire stared at the screen.
"You used me."
Adrian's expression broke.
"Yes."
"You sacrificed me."
"I thought it was the only way."
Claire wiped her eyes.
"You made me live a lie."
"I know."
"You made me marry Dominic."
Adrian hesitated.
"Yes."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"Why?"
Adrian answered:
"Because Dominic was the only man Gabriel couldn't control."
Claire stared at Dominic.
Adrian continued.
"I knew if Claire stayed close to him, Gabriel would eventually follow."
Dominic whispered:
"You used my marriage as bait."
"Yes."
The recording ended.
Silence.
Claire turned away.
Dominic followed.
"I'm sorry."
She laughed bitterly.
"You didn't do it."
"My father did."
"But you knew enough to suspect."
Dominic said nothing.
Claire looked at him.
"Did you ever love me?"
He answered immediately.
"Yes."
She looked away.
"That's what makes it worse."
Mia suddenly shouted.
"Dominic!"
He turned.
The computer screen had changed.
A new file appeared.
PROJECT MIRROR — FINAL SUBJECT.
Dominic opened it.
The document was dated three years earlier.
The same year Claire supposedly became pregnant.
The same year Isabella was born.
The first line read:
CLARA WAS NOT THE MOTHER.
Claire froze.
Dominic looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Mia whispered:
The next line appeared.
THE EMBRYO WAS TRANSFERRED.
Claire stared.
"I don't understand."
Dominic's face became cold.
"Someone used your body."
The medical records continued.
GENETIC MATERIAL: ISABELLA VALE
GESTATIONAL CARRIER: CLARA
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: DOMINIC VALE
Claire couldn't breathe.
"The baby..."
Mia nodded.
"She is yours."
Claire touched her stomach.
"But I don't remember being pregnant."
"Because you weren't supposed to."
Dominic stared at the screen.
"Who arranged it?"
A final name appeared.
ADRIAN VALE.
Claire backed away.
"No."
The screen changed.
A video opened.
Adrian appeared again.
But this time he was sitting beside a woman.
Claire's mother.
Elena.
Alive.
Claire covered her mouth.
Elena looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, Clara, I'm sorry."
Claire's tears fell.
"Mom..."
Elena continued.
"You were never meant to know the truth."
Dominic stood beside her.
Elena's voice trembled.
"Isabella was created to inherit the Vale trust."
"But the trust required two things."
"Vale blood."
"And a mother who could survive the conditioning."
Claire whispered:
"Me."
Elena nodded.
"You were chosen because you were the only person Adrian believed could survive."
Claire stared.
"Why would he think that?"
Elena answered:
"Because you had already survived him."
The video stopped.
Claire stood motionless.
Dominic looked at Mia.
"What does that mean?"
Mia didn't answer.
The computer displayed another document.
CLARA'S ORIGINAL IDENTITY.
Dominic opened it.
The name appeared.
CLARA ELENA VALE.
He froze.
Claire looked at him.
"My name."
He nodded.
"Yes."
She stared at the screen.
Then another line appeared.
RELATIONSHIP TO ADRIAN VALE: DAUGHTER.
Dominic's face went pale.
Claire whispered:
"Adrian was my father."
Mia closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Dominic looked at her.
"Then Isabella..."
"Is your daughter."
Claire looked at Dominic.
Her voice barely existed.
"So I'm your sister?"
Dominic stared.
"No."
Mia shook her head.
"That's the final lie."
Claire turned.
"What?"
Mia pointed at the record.
"Read the next line."
Dominic scrolled.
The document changed.
PATERNITY OF CLARA: UNKNOWN.
Claire frowned.
"Unknown?"
Mia nodded.
"Adrian raised you."
"But he wasn't my biological father."
"No."
Dominic stared.
"Then who was?"
Mia's eyes filled with fear.
"That's what Adrian never wanted anyone to discover."
A sound came from behind them.
A gun clicked.
Everyone froze.
A voice spoke from the doorway.
"Because I'm the one who knows."
Dominic turned.
Nathan stood there.
Blood stained his coat.
His face was calm.
Claire stared.
"Gabriel."
He smiled.
"Hello, Clara."
Dominic raised his gun.
"Drop yours."
Gabriel laughed.
"You still don't understand."
"Drop it."
"Your father lied to you."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"Which father?"
Gabriel smiled.
"Exactly."
He pointed his gun toward Claire.
"Because Adrian wasn't your father."
Claire froze.
Gabriel continued:
"And Vincent wasn't either."
Dominic's finger tightened around the trigger.
"Then who?"
Gabriel's smile disappeared.
"The man whose death started this entire war."
He looked at Claire.
"Your real father."
A pause.
"Was Adrian's greatest enemy."
The archive doors suddenly slammed shut.
The lights went red.
And every screen in the room displayed the same photograph.
A younger Adrian.
A younger Gabriel.
Vincent.
Elena.
And one unfamiliar man standing between them.
Claire stared at his face.
She recognized him.
Not from photographs.
Not from records.
But from the oldest memory she had.
The man who had carried her out of the fire.
She whispered:
"That's him."
Dominic looked at her.
"Who?"
Claire's face turned white.
"My father."
Gabriel smiled.
"And now you finally know why Adrian had to disappear."
The screens went black.
Then a final message appeared:
May you like
THE EVIDENCE WAS NEVER HIDDEN.
IT WAS ALIVE.
