CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST SECRET

CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST SECRET

The message arrived at 3:17 in the morning.

Dominic was still awake.

He stood alone in the library of the ruined Vale estate, surrounded by empty shelves and evidence boxes. Outside, federal vehicles remained parked along the drive. The mansion that had once been untouchable was now surrounded by yellow tape.

His phone vibrated.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

He answered.

"Dominic."

A woman's voice.

Elena.

Again.

But this time, there was no fear in it.

Only exhaustion.

"You wanted the last secret."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Tell me."

"You aren't ready."

"I've been ready for seventeen years."

A pause.

"Then come alone."

"Where?"

"The old train station."

"Which one?"

"Valley Junction."

Dominic grabbed his coat.

Before he could leave, Claire appeared in the doorway.

"You're not going alone."

"I have to."

"No."

"Claire—"

"I've spent my entire life being lied to because everyone decided I was too fragile to know the truth."

She walked toward him.

"Not anymore."

Dominic studied her face.

"You could be walking into a trap."

"So could you."

He almost smiled.

"You're becoming difficult."

"I learned from you."

They left together.

Neither noticed the shadow watching from the second-floor window.

The train station had been abandoned for decades.

Fog covered the tracks.

A single yellow light flickered above the platform.

Dominic and Claire stepped from the car.

"Elena?"

Nothing.

Claire looked around.

"This place feels familiar."

Dominic turned.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

She walked toward the old waiting room.

Then stopped.

A memory struck her.

A little girl.

A red suitcase.

A woman crying.

A train whistle.

And a man saying:

"If you forget everything, you will survive."

Claire grabbed the wall.

Dominic caught her.

"What did you see?"

"Me."

"Here?"

"Yes."

She looked toward the tracks.

"I've been here before."

A voice came from the darkness.

"You were six."

Dominic drew his gun.

Elena stepped into the light.

Claire stopped breathing.

Her mother looked older.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

"Mom."

Elena's lips trembled.

"Clara."

Claire ran to her.

Then stopped inches away.

Too many years stood between them.

"You left me."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had to."

"No."

Claire's voice broke.

"You chose to."

Elena looked at Dominic.

"I chose to keep you alive."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Then tell us everything."

Elena nodded.

"Everything."

They sat inside the abandoned station.

Elena placed a small metal box on the table.

Dominic recognized the symbol.

The Vale bird.

"What is it?"

"The last evidence Adrian kept."

Claire stared.

"You said the archive contained everything."

"It contained what Adrian wanted people to find."

Dominic frowned.

"And this?"

"What he wanted buried."

Elena opened the box.

Inside were three things.

A photograph.

A blood-stained hospital bracelet.

And a handwritten confession.

Claire picked up the photograph.

It showed Adrian.

Elena.

Matteo Rourke.

And a fourth man.

Dominic stared.

"I know him."

Claire looked at him.

"Who?"

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Arthur Vale."

Claire frowned.

"Your grandfather?"

"Yes."

Elena nodded.

"Arthur wasn't Adrian's father."

Dominic froze.

"What?"

"He was his uncle."

Silence.

Elena continued.

"Adrian was born into another family."

Dominic stared at the photograph.

"Why was that hidden?"

"Because Adrian wasn't supposed to inherit the Vale empire."

"Then who was?"

Elena looked at Claire.

"You."

Claire's face went pale.

"Me?"

"Your bloodline was older than the Vale family."

Dominic shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Elena's voice was firm.

"The Vale fortune came from your mother's family."

Claire stared.

"My mother's?"

"Yes."

"Then why did Adrian control it?"

"Because he married into it."

Dominic suddenly understood.

"The empire was never his."

Elena nodded.

"It belonged to Elena's family."

Claire whispered:

"Then my entire identity..."

"Was stolen."

Dominic picked up the confession.

The handwriting belonged to Adrian.

He read silently.

His expression changed.

Claire looked at him.

"What?"

Dominic handed her the paper.

She read.

Her hands began shaking.

I did not marry Elena for love.

I married her because her family possessed the trust.

I believed I could control the inheritance.

I was wrong.

Claire looked up.

"What happened?"

Elena answered.

"Your grandfather discovered the betrayal."

"Then why didn't he expose Adrian?"

"Because Adrian had already taken control of the trust."

Dominic frowned.

"How?"

Elena looked at the hospital bracelet.

"Through you."

Dominic stared.

"Me?"

"You were born first."

Claire looked confused.

Elena continued.

"Adrian needed a legitimate heir."

"That's why he raised Dominic."

"Yes."

"But then why Claire?"

Elena looked at her.

"Because Dominic was not Adrian's biological son."

Silence.

Dominic stopped breathing.

Claire stared at him.

Elena whispered:

"Your biological father was Matteo."

Dominic's face went blank.

"No."

"Yes."

"Matteo was Elena's lover."

Elena nodded.

"He was."

Dominic shook his head.

"Then Adrian knew?"

"He always knew."

"Why didn't he kill Matteo?"

"Because Matteo had something Adrian desperately needed."

"What?"

"The trust."

Dominic looked at the photograph.

Suddenly every piece shifted.

Matteo.

Elena.

Adrian.

The children.

The trust.

The false identities.

The fire.

Dominic whispered:

"Adrian wasn't protecting us."

Elena shook her head.

"He was protecting his control."

Claire looked at her mother.

"Then why did you let him take me?"

Elena's face collapsed.

"I didn't."

"Then who did?"

"Matteo."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"Your father took you."

"Why?"

"To hide you from Adrian."

"Then why did he give me back?"

"He didn't."

Elena looked at Dominic.

"Someone else did."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Elena whispered:

"Gabriel."

Claire stared.

"Gabriel saved me?"

"Yes."

"But he hunted me."

"Because after Adrian took Isabella, Gabriel believed you were the real heir."

Claire shook her head.

"Isabella."

Elena's face changed.

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

Elena looked away.

"Dead."

Claire froze.

"No."

"I'm sorry."

"You said she was alive."

"I said the child was alive."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Then who is the woman in Lisbon?"

Elena stared at her.

"Your sister."

Claire whispered:

"Then Isabella isn't dead."

"No."

Elena's voice became barely audible.

"Isabella died seventeen years ago."

Silence.

"The woman in Lisbon is her twin."

Claire's face went white.

"I had two sisters?"

Elena nodded.

"Three children were born."

Dominic stared.

"Three?"

Elena opened another document.

"Three girls."

Claire couldn't speak.

"The first was Isabella."

"The second was Clara."

"And the third?"

Elena looked at her.

"Elena."

Claire froze.

"Me?"

"No."

Elena touched her hand.

"The woman in Lisbon."

The room seemed to disappear.

Claire stared at her mother.

"My name is Elena?"

"Your birth name."

"Then who am I?"

Elena whispered:

"Clara was the identity you were given."

"Elena was the name of your twin."

Dominic looked at the photograph.

Three infants.

Three bracelets.

Three names.

ISABELLA.

CLARA.

ELENA.

He stared.

"But the woman in Lisbon..."

"Is your sister."

"Why did she take my name?"

"Because she believes you stole hers."

Claire's voice broke.

"I don't understand."

Elena looked at her.

"When the fire started, Adrian could only save one child."

"Which one?"

"Clara."

Claire stared.

"Me."

"Yes."

"And Isabella?"

"She was already gone."

"And Elena?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"She survived."

Claire whispered:

"Then why did everyone think she was dead?"

"Because Adrian needed her to disappear."

"Why?"

"Because she remembered everything."

A car engine sounded outside.

Dominic stood.

"We're not alone."

Elena's expression changed.

"They found us."

"Who?"

She whispered:

"Adrian."

The station lights went out.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Dominic pulled Claire behind the table.

"Stay down!"

Elena reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small pistol.

Claire stared.

"Mom?"

"I've had seventeen years to prepare."

The door exploded inward.

Three armed men entered.

Dominic fired.

One fell.

The others retreated.

Elena ran toward the back door.

"Move!"

They escaped through the tunnel beneath the station.

Footsteps followed.

Dominic looked back.

A man stood at the entrance.

Adrian.

Alive.

Older.

But calm.

Their eyes met.

Adrian smiled.

"My son."

Dominic stopped.

"Don't call me that."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"You finally learned."

"Everything."

"No."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"You still don't know the last secret."

Claire stepped forward.

"What?"

Adrian's eyes filled with sadness.

"The baby."

Claire froze.

"What about her?"

"She's not your daughter."

Dominic raised his gun.

"Enough."

Adrian shook his head.

"Ask Elena."

Everyone looked at her.

Elena couldn't speak.

Claire whispered:

"Mom?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

Adrian continued.

"Your daughter died the night she was born."

Claire screamed:

"No!"

"The child you have been chasing..."

Adrian smiled.

"...is not Isabella."

Claire's breathing stopped.

"Then who is she?"

Adrian looked at Dominic.

"His daughter."

Dominic stared.

"My daughter."

"Yes."

"Then she is Claire's daughter."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"She is not Claire's biological child."

Dominic froze.

"Then whose?"

Adrian looked at Elena.

Elena finally spoke.

"Mine."

Silence.

Claire stared at her mother.

"What?"

Elena whispered:

"The baby is mine."

Dominic's face went pale.

"Then she's..."

"Your half-sister."

Claire staggered.

"No."

Elena began crying.

"Adrian used your body to carry her because he needed your bloodline to activate the trust."

Claire covered her mouth.

"He used me as a surrogate."

"Yes."

"And Dominic?"

Elena looked at him.

"Her biological father."

Dominic's face hardened.

"Then the child is both."

Elena nodded.

"Your daughter."

"And my half-sister."

Claire's world shattered.

Adrian smiled.

"Now you understand."

Claire turned toward him.

"You did this."

"Yes."

"You destroyed my life."

"Yes."

"You used my body."

"Yes."

"You stole my child."

Adrian's expression softened.

"I protected the heir."

Claire raised her gun.

"You didn't protect anyone."

She fired.

Adrian disappeared behind the tunnel wall.

The bullet struck stone.

Dominic grabbed Claire.

"He's gone."

She screamed.

"I hate him!"

Elena held her.

"Let it go."

"No!"

Claire collapsed against her mother.

"I want my baby."

Elena whispered:

"Then go to Lisbon."

Claire looked up.

"Why?"

"Because she's waiting for you."

They reached the end of the tunnel.

A car waited.

Marcus stood beside it.

Dominic opened the door.

Then stopped.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A child's voice whispered:

"Daddy?"

Dominic froze.

The voice was small.

Frightened.

But alive.

"Who is this?"

A woman answered.

"Your daughter."

Dominic's heart stopped.

"Where are you?"

"Lisbon."

Claire grabbed the phone.

"Let me speak to her."

The woman laughed.

"Not yet."

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"Your sister."

Claire's blood ran cold.

The call ended.

A message appeared.

COME ALONE.

Then another.

BRING THE LAST KEY.

Dominic looked at Elena.

"What key?"

Elena's face went white.

"The key to the trust."

"Where is it?"

She pointed toward Claire.

"She has it."

Claire frowned.

"I don't."

Elena shook her head.

"You've carried it your entire life."

Claire looked down.

At the silver bird pendant around her neck.

The pendant she had worn since childhood.

She opened it.

Inside was a tiny black key.

Dominic stared.

"The last secret."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

She looked toward the dark tunnel.

"And now the empire will choose its final heir."

Claire closed her fingers around the key.

She looked at Dominic.

"Let's go get our daughter."

They drove toward the airport.

Behind them, the old station burned.

And in the flames, Adrian watched from the shadows.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Because he knew something Dominic didn't.

The final secret wasn't the identity of the heir.

May you like

It was the identity of the person who would inherit everything.

And that person had just chosen to come home.
