CHAPTER 13 — THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE

CHAPTER 13 — THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE

The timer showed 08:31.

Dominic looked at the sealed archive doors.

Then at Claire.

Then at Mia.

"Nobody leaves until I know the truth."

Mia's face was wet with tears.

"You don't have time."

"Then start talking."

"I can't."

Dominic stepped toward her.

"You've lied to me for seventeen years."

"I lied to keep people alive."

"You lied about my daughter."

Mia flinched.

"Because the truth would have killed her."

Claire stared at Mia.

"Tell me who she is."

Mia looked at her.

"She's yours."

Claire's breath caught.

"Biologically?"

"Yes."

"Then why did Elena say she's Clara?"

Mia closed her eyes.

"Because Clara wasn't your name."

Claire froze.

"What?"

Mia whispered:

"Clara was the name they gave you after the fire."

Dominic stared.

"Then what was her real name?"

Mia looked toward the screen.

"Elena named her Isabella."

Silence.

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"You were born Isabella."

"Then who was the other baby?"

Mia's voice broke.

"Your sister."

Claire stopped breathing.

"She died."

Mia nodded.

"That night."

Dominic understood.

"The baby in the photograph..."

"Was your sister."

"And the child everyone called Isabella?"

Mia looked at Claire.

"You."

Claire's knees weakened.

Dominic caught her.

"No."

Mia nodded.

"Adrian changed your identity because he wanted the world to believe Isabella was dead."

Claire stared.

"Why?"

"Because Gabriel wanted Isabella."

"And if Gabriel believed Isabella was dead..."

"He would stop hunting you."

Claire whispered:

"So my entire life was built on a lie."

Mia shook her head.

"Your entire life was built to keep you alive."

The timer reached 07:42.

Dominic looked at the door.

"We're getting out."

The explosion came from beneath them.

The floor shook.

Files fell from the shelves.

Claire screamed.

Dominic pulled her close as the ceiling cracked.

Mia shouted:

"The emergency passage!"

Dominic grabbed her.

"Where?"

"Behind the archive."

They ran.

Another explosion.

The lights died.

The archive descended into darkness.

Dominic switched on his flashlight.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Claire coughed.

"What's happening?"

"Gabriel is destroying the evidence."

Mia shook her head.

"No."

Dominic looked at her.

"What?"

"He's not destroying it."

She pointed toward the servers.

"He's transferring it."

Dominic understood.

"He's sending everything somewhere."

"Yes."

"Where?"

Mia looked terrified.

"Everywhere."

The main server began blinking.

One after another, encrypted files disappeared.

Dominic rushed to the terminal.

"Can we stop it?"

Mia shook her head.

"It's already gone."

"Who receives it?"

"Everyone."

Claire stared.

"Politicians?"

"Bankers."

"Police?"

"Criminals."

Dominic looked at the screen.

The names kept multiplying.

Vance.

Vale.

Rourke.

Cross.

Marlowe.

Thousands of names.

Decades of corruption.

Every secret.

Every payment.

Every murder.

Every betrayal.

The Vale empire had spent decades buying silence.

Now silence was impossible.

Dominic whispered:

"He just destroyed the entire system."

Mia nodded.

"He destroyed the empire."

Across the city, phones began ringing.

Judges received anonymous files.

Journalists received encrypted packages.

Federal investigators received financial records.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Private jets were grounded.

Corporate offices were surrounded.

The Vale name appeared on every screen.

Then the Rourke organization.

Then the Cross network.

Then the Marlowe accounts.

The machine Adrian had built to control everyone had become the weapon that exposed everyone.

And the man responsible was still nowhere to be found.

Dominic, Claire, and Mia escaped through the underground tunnel minutes before the archive collapsed.

They emerged into the cemetery.

Rain poured down.

Police sirens echoed in the distance.

Marcus ran toward them.

"Boss!"

Dominic grabbed him.

"Where's the plane?"

"Grounded."

"Why?"

"Federal order."

Dominic looked at Claire.

"Then we drive."

Marcus shook his head.

"You can't."

"Why?"

He handed Dominic his phone.

A news broadcast was playing.

VALE EMPIRE COLLAPSES AS MASSIVE EVIDENCE DUMP EXPOSES INTERNATIONAL CRIME NETWORK.

Dominic stared.

Then another headline appeared.

MYSTERIOUS WOMAN CONNECTED TO VALE DYNASTY REPORTEDLY MISSING.

Claire looked at the screen.

"Elena."

Dominic nodded.

A reporter continued:

"Authorities are searching for Dominic Vale, believed to possess information regarding the network..."

Marcus looked at him.

"They think you're involved."

Dominic smiled bitterly.

"Of course they do."

Claire stepped forward.

"Let them come."

Dominic looked at her.

"You don't have to run."

She shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward the ruined cemetery.

"I'm done running."

Three hours later, the Vale estate was surrounded.

Federal agents entered through every door.

Boxes of evidence were carried outside.

The mansion that had once terrified politicians became a crime scene.

Arthur's portraits were removed.

Adrian's office was sealed.

The underground vault was discovered.

And behind one wall—

another room.

Marcus called Dominic.

"Boss."

"What?"

"You need to see this."

Dominic and Claire entered.

The room contained hundreds of ledgers.

But one object stood alone in the center.

A wooden cradle.

Inside it was a photograph.

Two newborn babies.

One marked A.

One marked B.

Claire stared.

"That's me."

Dominic picked up the photograph.

On the back:

SUBJECT A — ISABELLA.

SUBJECT B — ELENA'S OTHER CHILD.

Claire frowned.

"Other child?"

Then she saw the second photograph.

The baby's face.

She froze.

"That's impossible."

Dominic looked.

The baby was identical to Claire.

Same eyes.

Same birthmark.

Same tiny silver bracelet.

Claire whispered:

"I had a twin."

Mia appeared in the doorway.

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

Mia didn't answer.

Claire turned.

"Where is she?"

Mia's silence said everything.

Claire's voice became desperate.

"She didn't die."

Mia shook her head.

"No."

"Then where is she?"

Mia looked at Dominic.

"Adrian took her."

"When?"

"That night."

"Why?"

"Because she wasn't sick."

Claire stared.

"What?"

Mia whispered:

"She was the stronger one."

Dominic frowned.

"Stronger?"

"Her blood."

Mia pointed toward the files.

"She carried the genetic mutation that activated the Vale trust."

Claire stared.

"Then she's the real heir."

Mia nodded.

"And Adrian took her to protect the trust."

Claire's face hardened.

"He stole my sister."

"Yes."

"Where?"

Mia hesitated.

"Lisbon."

Dominic looked at the clock.

They had been chasing the wrong person.

They had thought Isabella was the baby on the plane.

They had thought Elena was the key.

They had thought Adrian was protecting Claire.

But the truth was much darker.

The real heir had been hidden for seventeen years.

And Adrian had taken her overseas.

Dominic looked at Claire.

"We're going to Lisbon."

Claire nodded.

"But first..."

She picked up the photograph.

"We find out who my sister became."

At that exact moment, thousands of miles away, a woman stood on a balcony overlooking the Atlantic.

She was twenty-nine years old.

Dark hair.

Pale eyes.

A silver bird pendant around her neck.

She held a photograph.

Claire.

Dominic.

The baby.

A man approached behind her.

"Your father wants you."

She turned.

"Which one?"

The man smiled.

"Adrian."

She laughed.

"He still thinks he's my father."

"Isn't he?"

She looked toward the ocean.

"No."

She turned back.

"Not anymore."

The man frowned.

"Then who is?"

She smiled.

"You'll find out soon."

She held up the photograph.

On the back was a name.

ELENA.

But it wasn't the name of their mother.

It was hers.

The woman without a name finally had one.

And she was coming home.

Back in New York, Dominic received one final message.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

Claire and the mysterious woman stood side by side as children.

Underneath it were seven words:

WE WERE BOTH SUPPOSED TO DIE.

Then another message arrived.

COME TO LISBON, BROTHER.

Dominic stared at the screen.

Claire read it over his shoulder.

Her face went pale.

"Brother?"

Dominic looked at her.

"She's calling me brother."

Mia whispered:

"That means..."

Claire finished the sentence.

"She's not my sister."

Silence.

Dominic's phone rang.

He answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Hello, Dominic."

He recognized it.

Elena.

Alive.

"Mom."

A pause.

Then:

"You finally found the truth."

"Where are you?"

"Where this began."

"Lisbon?"

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"New York."

Dominic froze.

"Where?"

The line went dead.

Then every light in the mansion went out.

A single message appeared on his phone.

LOOK BEHIND YOU.

Dominic turned.

Nobody was there.

Except Claire.

And on the marble floor between them lay a silver bird pendant.

Still warm.

Claire picked it up.

Her hands began to shake.

"I've seen this before."

"Where?"

She looked toward the staircase.

"On the woman who carried me out of the fire."

Dominic's expression changed.

"Elena."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the pendant.

"Matteo."

The empire had fallen.

The money was gone.

The secrets were exposed.

The powerful men who had ruled through fear were finally running.

But Dominic realized something far more dangerous.

The collapse of the empire had never been Gabriel's final goal.

It was a distraction.

While the world watched the Vale dynasty burn, someone had quietly taken control of the one thing that mattered.

The heir.

The evidence.

And the woman who knew the truth.

Claire looked at Dominic.

"What happens now?"

He looked toward the dark windows.

"Now we stop playing their game."

"And if they come for us?"

Dominic loaded his gun.

"Then they learn what happens when the hunted stop running."

Far away, a plane crossed the night sky.

On board sat the woman without a name.

Beside her was the missing baby.

And across from them—

Adrian Vale.

Alive.

Smiling.

But for the first time in decades, Adrian wasn't in control.

Because the woman sitting beside him had just opened a file marked:

THE FALL OF ADRIAN VALE.

Inside was one photograph.

Her.

Dominic.

Claire.

And a fourth person.

A man Dominic had never seen.

The photograph was dated seventeen years ago.

The caption read:

THE REAL FAMILY.

May you like

And beneath it:

PHASE TWO BEGINS TONIGHT.
