CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN WITHOUT A NAME

CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN WITHOUT A NAME

The archive went silent.

Every screen had gone black.

Only the red emergency lights remained.

Claire stared at the last image burned into her memory.

The unfamiliar man.

The man who had carried her from the fire.

The man she had somehow remembered without ever knowing his name.

Her father.

Dominic kept his weapon trained on Gabriel.

"Who is he?"

Gabriel smiled.

"You already know."

"No."

"You've seen his face before."

"Where?"

Gabriel's eyes moved toward Claire.

"Ask her."

Claire shook her head.

"I don't remember."

Gabriel laughed softly.

"That's because Adrian made certain you wouldn't."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"You keep blaming Adrian."

"Because Adrian destroyed everyone."

"Then tell me the truth."

Gabriel's smile vanished.

"Truth?"

He looked around the archive.

"Truth is what powerful men leave behind when they believe nobody will ever find it."

He pointed toward the files.

"Your father built this place because he was terrified of his own secrets."

Dominic glanced at Claire.

"And hers."

Gabriel nodded.

"Especially hers."

A gunshot exploded.

Dominic fired.

Gabriel ducked behind a cabinet.

Bullets struck the metal shelves.

Claire dropped to the floor.

Mia pulled her behind the desk.

"Stay down!"

Another shot.

Then silence.

Dominic moved through the rows.

"Gabriel!"

No answer.

He reached the end of the corridor.

Empty.

Only a bloodstain remained on the floor.

Dominic crouched.

"He's wounded."

Mia looked toward the ventilation shaft.

"He escaped."

Dominic stood.

"How?"

"There's another passage."

Claire looked at the floor.

"Of course there is."

Dominic turned.

"What?"

"Every secret in this family has another door."

She looked at the archive.

"And every door seems to lead to the same person."

"Who?"

Claire pointed at the photograph.

"The man without a name."

They found the hidden passage behind a cabinet marked ELENA VALE.

Dominic opened it.

A narrow staircase descended.

Mia hesitated.

"I've never seen this."

Claire looked at her.

"You've been protecting us for years."

Mia swallowed.

"Not from everything."

They descended.

At the bottom was a small room.

No windows.

No furniture.

Only photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Claire walked slowly along the wall.

Pictures of herself as a child.

Claire at six.

Claire at ten.

Claire at sixteen.

Claire at nineteen.

Claire on her wedding day.

Dominic stopped.

"This was surveillance."

Mia nodded.

"Someone followed you your entire life."

Claire touched one photograph.

She was standing beside a school bus.

Behind her was a black sedan.

She recognized it.

"I remember this car."

Dominic looked at her.

"When?"

"When I was twelve."

"What happened?"

"I thought someone was following me."

"Did you see the driver?"

Claire closed her eyes.

A memory surfaced.

A man's hand.

A silver ring.

A scar across one knuckle.

And a voice.

"Don't be afraid, Clara."

She opened her eyes.

"The man in the photograph."

Dominic stared.

"What about him?"

"He wore that ring."

She pointed at a photograph.

The unknown man stood beside Adrian.

On his right hand was a silver ring.

A black stone.

Dominic studied it.

"That's a Vale signet."

Mia shook her head.

"No."

Dominic looked at her.

"It's not?"

"It belonged to Adrian's enemy."

"Who?"

Mia whispered:

"Matteo Rourke."

Claire froze.

The name struck something inside her.

Rourke.

She had heard it before.

Not in a conversation.

In a nightmare.

A burning room.

A woman screaming.

A man saying:

"Rourke will come for the child."

Claire stepped backward.

"I know that name."

Dominic stared.

"Who was he?"

Mia answered.

"The most dangerous man Adrian ever crossed."

The room suddenly became cold.

Dominic looked at the photographs.

"Why would he be Claire's father?"

Mia shook her head.

"We don't know."

Claire stared at the photograph of Matteo.

He looked nothing like Adrian.

Nothing like Gabriel.

Yet something about his eyes felt familiar.

"Where is he now?"

Mia hesitated.

"Dead."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Everyone in this family is dead."

"Except the ones who aren't."

Dominic looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Mia pointed toward the photograph.

"Matteo supposedly died seventeen years ago."

Claire whispered:

"Supposedly."

A telephone rang.

Everyone froze.

There was an old black phone on the wall.

It shouldn't have worked.

Dominic picked it up.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a woman's voice.

"Dominic."

He recognized it.

"Elena."

Claire's face changed.

"Mom?"

The voice answered:

"Clara."

Claire grabbed the receiver.

"Where are you?"

"Not where you think."

"Are you alive?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Claire began crying.

"Why did you leave me?"

"I didn't."

"Then why?"

"Because Adrian told me you would be killed if I stayed."

Claire's voice broke.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had no choice."

"You always had a choice."

Silence.

Then Elena whispered:

"I made one mistake."

"What?"

"I trusted Matteo."

Claire's breathing stopped.

"He's my father."

"No."

Claire froze.

Elena's voice became urgent.

"Matteo is not your father."

"Then who is?"

Elena hesitated.

"Your father is the reason Matteo wanted you dead."

Dominic grabbed the phone.

"Elena, who is Claire's father?"

The line went silent.

Then Elena whispered:

"Adrian."

Dominic stared.

"But the records say—"

"The records are fake."

Claire looked at Dominic.

Her face was pale.

Elena continued:

"Adrian was your father, Clara."

"But Gabriel said—"

"Gabriel has spent his life trying to destroy Adrian's legacy."

"Why?"

"Because Adrian took something from him."

"What?"

"The woman he loved."

Dominic frowned.

"Who?"

Elena's voice trembled.

"Me."

The call ended.

Claire stared at the receiver.

"She was Adrian's wife."

Dominic nodded.

"Before my mother."

Mia looked away.

Claire suddenly understood.

"Adrian had two families."

"Yes."

"And Gabriel loved Elena."

Mia nodded.

"Yes."

Claire looked at the photographs.

"Then why did Gabriel want me?"

Mia answered:

"Because he believed you were Adrian's favorite."

Claire whispered:

"Was I?"

"No."

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"You were Adrian's weapon."

Claire stared at her.

"What?"

"He raised you to inherit the trust."

"But why?"

"Because the trust wasn't just money."

Dominic frowned.

"What else?"

Mia looked at the wall.

"The trust contained evidence."

"Evidence of what?"

"Everything."

She pointed toward the archive.

"Politicians. Judges. Bankers. Criminal organizations."

Dominic understood.

"Leverage."

Mia nodded.

"Adrian didn't build an empire."

"He built a weapon."

Claire's voice was quiet.

"And I inherited it."

"Not yet."

Mia looked at her.

"The trust activates when you turn thirty."

Claire froze.

"How old am I?"

"Twenty-nine."

Dominic stared.

"How long?"

Mia answered:

"Eleven months."

The door behind them opened.

Dominic spun around.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Silver ring.

Claire stopped breathing.

The man looked at her.

"Clara."

She couldn't move.

Dominic raised his gun.

"Matteo Rourke."

The man smiled.

"You've grown."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"You know me."

"I knew you before you could walk."

"Are you my father?"

Matteo shook his head.

"No."

"Then who are you?"

He looked at Dominic.

"Your father's greatest mistake."

Dominic's weapon remained raised.

"You helped Adrian."

"Sometimes."

"You fought him."

"Sometimes."

"You loved Elena."

Matteo's expression softened.

"Yes."

Claire stepped forward.

"Why did you protect me?"

Matteo looked at her.

"Because Elena asked me to."

"Why?"

"Because she knew Adrian would eventually sacrifice you."

Claire shook her head.

"That's not true."

Matteo laughed.

"You still believe your father loved you."

"I do."

"Then you don't know him."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Enough."

Matteo looked at him.

"Your father arranged Claire's marriage."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"I know."

"He ordered her pregnancy."

"I know."

"He erased her memories."

Dominic's voice became cold.

"I know."

Matteo smiled.

"No."

He looked at Claire.

"You don't know the worst part."

Claire whispered:

"What?"

Matteo answered:

"Adrian didn't create Isabella."

Dominic froze.

"Then who did?"

Matteo's eyes moved toward the hallway.

"The woman who raised her."

Mia suddenly went pale.

Claire looked at her.

"Mia?"

Mia stepped backward.

"No."

Dominic raised his weapon slightly.

"Mia."

"No."

Claire stared at her.

"You know."

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"I was trying to protect you."

"You knew who created Isabella."

"Yes."

"Who?"

Mia couldn't speak.

Matteo answered for her.

"Elena."

Claire's face went white.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Elena had another child."

Dominic frowned.

"Another?"

Matteo nodded.

"Isabella wasn't the only baby born that night."

Silence.

Claire stared.

"Then who was the other?"

Mia began crying.

"Clara."

Claire's breath caught.

"Me?"

Mia nodded.

"You were born minutes apart."

Dominic stared.

"Twins."

Mia whispered:

"Yes."

Claire looked at Matteo.

"But Elena said I wasn't Isabella."

"She lied."

"Why?"

"Because one child was the heir."

"And the other?"

Matteo looked at Claire.

"The other was the sacrifice."

Suddenly, the archive alarm began screaming.

Red lights flashed.

Mia looked toward the door.

"Someone accessed the main vault."

Dominic grabbed his radio.

"Marcus."

Static.

Then a voice.

Not Marcus.

Gabriel.

"Too late."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"What did you do?"

"I opened the evidence."

"What evidence?"

Gabriel laughed.

"The one thing Adrian was terrified of."

A screen turned on.

A live video appeared.

A woman sat in a chair.

Her hands were bound.

Her face was bruised.

Claire gasped.

"Elena."

Dominic stepped toward the screen.

"Mom!"

Elena looked directly into the camera.

Then whispered:

"Don't trust Mia."

Claire froze.

Mia began crying.

"No."

Elena continued.

"She has been lying to you since the beginning."

Dominic turned toward Mia.

"What did you do?"

Mia shook her head.

"I didn't."

Elena's voice came through the speaker.

"Mia wasn't protecting Claire."

"She was protecting the child."

Claire stared.

"What child?"

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"Not Isabella."

Claire's blood went cold.

"The other one."

Dominic stared.

"What other one?"

Elena whispered:

"Your daughter."

Claire looked at Dominic.

Her face drained of color.

"The baby?"

Elena nodded.

"She's not Isabella."

Dominic froze.

"Then who is she?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"She's Clara."

Claire couldn't breathe.

The same name.

Her name.

Her identity.

Her child.

Another lie.

The screen went black.

Then Gabriel's voice whispered:

"Now you understand why Claire had to forget."

The archive doors slammed shut.

A timer appeared.

TEN MINUTES.

Dominic looked at Claire.

"What did Gabriel mean?"

She stared at the screen.

"I don't know."

But somewhere deep inside her mind, a forgotten memory had begun to return.

A nursery.

Two babies.

Elena crying.

Adrian standing over them.

And one sentence:

"Only one of them can survive."

Claire suddenly grabbed Dominic's arm.

"We have to find the baby."

"Why?"

"Because Gabriel isn't trying to kill her."

"Then what?"

Claire looked at him, terrified.

"He's trying to prove which child is the real heir."

Dominic's expression changed.

"And if he proves it?"

Claire whispered:

"Then everyone who lied about her identity will become a target."

The timer reached 08:47.

And somewhere far away, a baby began to cry.

A cry that carried across a telephone line.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Clara."

The line went dead.

Claire stared into the darkness.

For the first time, she understood the real horror.

The question was no longer:

Who is the child?

May you like

It was:

Which woman is actually her mother?
