CHAPTER 9 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 9 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE BETRAYAL

The cry came again.

Soft.

Weak.

Impossible to mistake.

A baby.

Dominic stood completely still.

Claire stared at the opening beneath the cemetery floor.

Harper's voice echoed from somewhere below.

"Mommy?"

Then a woman answered.

"Harper, don't move."

Mia.

Alive.

Dominic looked at Claire.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Claire—"

"If there's a child down there, I'm going."

He nodded once.

Together, they descended.

The staircase was narrow and damp.

The air smelled of earth and old stone.

At the bottom stood a steel door.

It was unlocked.

Dominic pushed it open.

The room beyond was enormous.

Concrete walls.

Old medical equipment.

A generator humming in the corner.

And in the center—

Mia.

Her wrists were bound to a chair.

Harper was beside her.

Alive.

Terrified.

But neither was looking at Dominic.

They were staring at the woman standing behind them.

Claire stopped.

Her face drained of color.

The woman was holding a baby.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

A silver bracelet around one tiny wrist.

Claire whispered:

"No."

Dominic looked at her.

"Who is that?"

Claire couldn't answer.

The woman smiled.

"You finally came."

Dominic raised his gun.

"Put the baby down."

The woman laughed softly.

"Still giving orders, Dominic."

Claire stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at her.

"You don't remember me?"

Claire shook her head.

The woman touched the baby's cheek.

"You were six years old."

Something inside Claire snapped.

A memory surfaced.

A red curtain.

A burning house.

A woman's perfume.

A lullaby.

And a voice saying:

"You must never let them know which child is Isabella."

Claire staggered.

Dominic caught her.

"Claire."

She stared at the woman.

"Anna."

The woman smiled.

"Good."

Mia began crying.

"Claire, don't listen to her."

Claire turned.

"What?"

Mia shook her head.

"She's lying."

Anna laughed.

"You still haven't learned."

Dominic looked between them.

"Someone explain."

Anna's eyes remained fixed on Claire.

"Your precious maid knows exactly who I am."

Mia whispered:

"Don't."

Anna smiled.

"Tell her."

Mia looked away.

Dominic's voice became hard.

"Mia."

No answer.

"Tell me."

Mia finally looked up.

"I knew Anna."

"How?"

"Because she helped me save Claire."

Claire's eyes widened.

"You saved me?"

Mia nodded.

"After the fire."

Anna shook her head.

"No."

Mia looked at her.

"You didn't save her."

"I hid her."

"From Nathan."

"From everyone."

Dominic frowned.

"Why?"

Anna looked toward the baby.

"Because the wrong child was being hunted."

Silence.

Claire stared at the infant.

"Who is she?"

Anna's expression softened.

"Your daughter."

Claire froze.

Dominic's eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

Anna smiled.

"Is it?"

Claire stepped backward.

"I don't have a child."

Anna looked at Mia.

"Tell her."

Mia closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"She does."

The room seemed to tilt.

Claire stared at Mia.

"No."

Mia couldn't meet her eyes.

"You were pregnant."

"When?"

"Before the fire."

Claire shook her head.

"I was six."

"Not then."

Mia's voice trembled.

"Years later."

Dominic stared at her.

"You knew?"

Mia nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she didn't want anyone to know."

Claire looked at the baby.

"Where have I been?"

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"That's the problem."

"What problem?"

"You don't remember."

Anna stepped closer.

"Because Nathan made sure you wouldn't."

Dominic's expression darkened.

"How?"

"Drugs."

Anna answered calmly.

"Conditioning. Isolation. False memories."

Claire stared at her.

"You manipulated my memories."

"No."

Anna shook her head.

"Someone else did."

"Who?"

Anna looked at Mia.

Mia whispered:

"Nathan."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Then why does Anna know?"

"Because she helped him."

The room went silent.

Anna smiled.

"There it is."

Dominic looked at Mia.

"You trusted her."

Mia nodded.

"At first."

"And then?"

"I realized what she was doing."

Anna laughed.

"Too late."

A metallic click sounded behind them.

Dominic spun around.

The door had locked.

The generator stopped.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then a red emergency light came on.

Nathan's voice came through a hidden speaker.

"Welcome."

Dominic raised his gun.

"Gabriel."

"Still using that name?"

Dominic stared at the speaker.

"Let them go."

"No."

"Then I'll find you."

"You already did."

A screen flickered on.

Nathan appeared.

He was sitting in a room Dominic recognized.

His father's study.

Behind him hung Adrian's portrait.

Nathan smiled.

"You found the vault."

Dominic's voice was cold.

"And you brought us here."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I needed all of you together."

Claire looked at the baby.

"What does she have to do with this?"

Nathan smiled.

"Everything."

Claire's breathing stopped.

Nathan continued.

"That child carries the bloodline Adrian spent his life trying to protect."

Dominic frowned.

"She's a Vale?"

"No."

Nathan smiled.

"She's something more dangerous."

Claire stared.

"What?"

Nathan leaned toward the camera.

"She's proof that your mother betrayed Adrian."

Dominic's face hardened.

"What are you talking about?"

"Your mother didn't simply disappear."

Nathan paused.

"She made a deal."

"With whom?"

"With Vincent."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Nathan laughed.

"You still want to believe your mother was innocent."

"She wasn't."

"She sold Adrian's location."

Dominic stared.

"And you killed her."

"No."

Nathan's voice became quiet.

"Vincent did."

"Why?"

"Because once Adrian was captured, he no longer needed her."

Claire looked at the woman holding the baby.

"Then why is Anna here?"

Nathan smiled.

"Because Anna was the one who took the baby."

Claire froze.

"From me?"

"Yes."

Anna lowered her eyes.

The baby began crying.

Claire took a step forward.

"Give her to me."

Anna shook her head.

"Not yet."

"She's mine."

Anna looked at her.

"That's what you think."

Dominic's attention shifted.

Something wasn't right.

Nathan had told them too much.

Too easily.

He was revealing secrets that should have remained hidden.

Dominic studied the screen.

"Where's the camera?"

Nathan smiled.

"Why?"

"Because you're not in the room you're showing us."

Nathan's expression changed slightly.

Dominic continued.

"The delay."

"What delay?"

"Your video feed is six seconds behind."

Nathan said nothing.

Dominic looked at Marcus's tracking device.

He had activated it before entering the vault.

A tiny green light blinked.

They weren't underground anymore.

The signal was coming from the mansion.

"You're in my house."

Nathan smiled.

"Very good."

Dominic turned to Claire.

"Marcus is there."

Claire understood.

"He wants us away from the mansion."

"Exactly."

Nathan laughed.

"You were always smarter than Adrian."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Where is the vault?"

Nathan's smile faded.

"You'll never find it."

"Because we're standing inside it?"

"No."

Nathan leaned closer.

"Because you're standing inside the trap."

The floor suddenly shook.

A timer appeared on the screen.

05:00

Claire stared.

"What is that?"

Nathan smiled.

"Five minutes."

Dominic looked around.

"Five minutes until what?"

"Until the chamber fills."

Mia's eyes widened.

"Gas."

Nathan nodded.

"Goodbye."

The screen went black.

Panic erupted.

Dominic rushed to the door.

Locked.

Marcus's radio wouldn't connect.

Mia struggled against the restraints.

"Dominic!"

He fired at the lock.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Claire looked at Anna.

"You knew."

Anna's expression changed.

"I didn't know about the gas."

"You brought us here."

"Because Nathan threatened me."

"Why should I believe you?"

Anna looked at the baby.

"Because if I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have brought her."

Claire stared.

Anna moved toward the wall.

"There's a ventilation control."

"Where?"

"Behind the cabinet."

Dominic moved it.

A panel appeared.

He opened it.

The controls had been deliberately damaged.

Mia cried:

"We're running out of time."

Dominic looked at the timer.

3:42.

Claire noticed the silver bracelet on the baby's wrist.

She remembered the photograph.

Silver.

Isabella.

Gold.

Clara.

She looked at Anna.

"Whose bracelet is that?"

Anna didn't answer.

Claire's face changed.

"You said I was Isabella."

Anna remained silent.

"Answer me."

The woman holding the baby finally whispered:

"You're not."

Dominic turned.

"What?"

Anna looked directly at Claire.

"You were never Isabella."

Claire's world seemed to stop.

"The baby is."

She lifted the infant slightly.

"She is Isabella."

Silence.

Mia began crying.

"No."

Anna continued:

"The child was born with the bloodline Nathan has spent seventeen years searching for."

Claire stared at the baby.

"Then who am I?"

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

"You're Clara."

Dominic looked at Mia.

Mia couldn't speak.

Claire shook her head.

"Why did Nathan tell me I was Isabella?"

"Because he needed you to believe it."

"Why?"

Anna answered:

"Because Isabella is protected by the Vale trust."

"And Clara?"

"Clara is not."

Claire's voice broke.

"Then I was bait."

Anna nodded.

"Yes."

Dominic finally understood.

Nathan had never been trying to find Isabella.

He had been using Claire to lead everyone to the real heir.

The baby.

The entire identity game had been designed around one lie.

Claire wasn't the heir.

She was the decoy.

The timer reached 2:11.

Dominic looked at the ventilation system.

"We need another way out."

Claire looked at the floor.

"The baby."

Dominic frowned.

"What?"

"Look at the bracelet."

She pointed.

There was a tiny symbol engraved on it.

A bird.

But beneath the bird was a sequence of numbers.

Dominic recognized it.

"Coordinates."

Anna nodded.

"Your father used them."

"To what?"

"The emergency exit."

Dominic followed the coordinates to the far wall.

He pressed the stone.

Nothing.

Claire pressed the bracelet against it.

A click.

The wall opened.

Fresh air rushed inside.

Mia began coughing.

Dominic released her.

"Go!"

They ran.

Anna carried the baby.

Claire followed.

But just before Dominic exited, he heard something.

A whisper.

Behind him.

"Dominic."

He turned.

A figure stood in the darkness.

Nathan.

Holding a gun.

Dominic raised his weapon.

"You."

Nathan smiled.

"Too slow."

He fired.

Dominic ducked.

The bullet struck the wall.

Nathan disappeared into the darkness.

Dominic chased him.

But the tunnel split.

Two directions.

One led outside.

The other deeper underground.

Dominic stopped.

He heard footsteps from the left.

Then a baby's cry from the right.

He froze.

Nathan had created another choice.

But this time, Dominic understood the trick.

He followed the crying.

The tunnel opened into a second chamber.

There was no Nathan.

No weapons.

No traps.

Only a table.

On it was a file.

Dominic opened it.

The first page contained a photograph.

Claire.

Pregnant.

A date.

Three years earlier.

Dominic stared.

The second page showed Mia holding a newborn.

The third showed Anna.

And the fourth contained a DNA report.

Dominic read the conclusion.

His blood ran cold.

PATERNITY: DOMINIC VALE — 99.99%.

He stared at the paper.

Claire entered behind him.

"What is it?"

Dominic couldn't answer.

She took the report.

Her hands began to shake.

"No."

Dominic looked at her.

"Claire..."

She stared at the result.

"This isn't possible."

The baby cried in Anna's arms.

Mia looked away.

Dominic slowly turned toward her.

"You knew."

Mia began to cry.

"I was trying to protect her."

"You knew the baby was mine."

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Three years."

Dominic stared.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Mia's answer broke something inside him.

"Because you weren't supposed to survive."

Silence.

Dominic's face hardened.

"What?"

Mia shook her head.

"That was the plan."

Claire looked at her.

"What plan?"

Mia closed her eyes.

"Your marriage."

Dominic stepped backward.

Mia whispered:

"Claire wasn't placed in your life by accident."

Dominic stared.

"Then who sent her?"

Mia looked at Anna.

Anna looked at the baby.

And finally said:

"Adrian."

Dominic froze.

His dead father had arranged the marriage.

His dead father had hidden the child.

His dead father had created the identity.

And suddenly the biggest question wasn't whether Adrian had survived.

It was why a dead man had spent years manipulating everyone around him.

Mia reached for Dominic.

"There's something else."

He pulled away.

"What?"

Mia whispered:

"Claire wasn't the only woman Adrian chose."

Dominic looked at Anna.

Anna's face was full of regret.

"He chose me too."

The lights went out.

And in the darkness, Nathan's voice whispered from somewhere nearby:

"Now you finally understand."

A gunshot exploded.

When the emergency lights returned—

the baby was gone.

So was Anna.

And Claire was standing beside Dominic with blood on her hands.

She stared at them in horror.

"I didn't do this."

Dominic looked at the blood.

Then toward the empty doorway.

He knew one thing with absolute certainty.

Someone had betrayed them.

May you like

But the deeper betrayal was worse.

Someone inside their own circle had been working for Nathan from the beginning.
