CHAPTER 10

THE WOMAN WHO BUILT THE TRAP

Daniel did not sleep.

Not after hearing Anna’s voice.

Not after seeing the photograph.

Not after learning that the woman he had buried two years ago was alive somewhere, trapped, and asking him not to trust the person who had helped him uncover the truth.

Claire.

The name kept repeating in his mind.

The woman who had appeared at the perfect moment.

The woman who carried Anna’s final letter.

The woman who knew secrets no one else knew.

The woman Anna had just warned him about.

By sunrise, Daniel had made one decision.

He would not tell anyone Anna was alive.

Not the police.

Not the media.

Not even Sarah.

Not yet.

Because someone was watching.

Someone had known about Project Lily.

Someone had found Michael.

Someone had sent the photograph.

And someone wanted Daniel to react emotionally.

The old Daniel would have rushed forward.

He would have trusted the first person offering help.

He would have believed love was enough to recognize loyalty.

But the past two years had taught him something painful.

Sometimes the people closest to you knew exactly where to place the knife.

Sarah Collins arrived at his house at 8:00 a.m.

She took one look at his face and knew something had happened.

“You found something.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I need you to answer one question.”

Sarah waited.

“Do you trust Claire Morgan?”

The detective’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Daniel noticed.

“You asked that too quickly.”

Sarah looked away.

“That’s because I have been asking myself the same thing.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“You suspected her?”

“I suspected everyone.”

Sarah placed a folder on the table.

“After the courtroom, I investigated Claire’s background.”

Daniel opened it.

The first page was a photograph.

Claire Morgan.

The second was a company record.

The third was a medical file.

Daniel frowned.

“What am I looking at?”

Sarah pointed.

“Claire Morgan was not just Anna’s friend.”

A pause.

“She was Anna’s former legal advisor.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“She worked with your father’s company fifteen years ago.”

The room became quiet.

Daniel remembered Anna mentioning Claire.

A family friend.

Someone trustworthy.

Someone who helped with difficult decisions.

But not this.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Sarah looked at him.

“Because Claire disappeared from the public record after your father died.”

Daniel turned the pages.

There was another document.

A transfer agreement.

His eyes narrowed.

“This is impossible.”

“What?”

Daniel pointed.

“Claire owned shares in Whitaker Medical.”

Sarah nodded.

“Minor shares.”

“How many?”

Sarah hesitated.

“Enough to influence certain decisions.”

Daniel stepped back.

The web was getting bigger.

“Why would Anna hide this from me?”

Sarah looked serious.

“Maybe she wasn’t hiding it from you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She was hiding it for you.”

Meanwhile, across the city, Claire Morgan sat alone in an expensive apartment overlooking the river.

She watched the news.

Daniel’s name was everywhere.

The custody battle.

The arrest.

The Whitaker family scandal.

But Claire was not watching the television.

She was watching the reflection in the window.

Because she knew someone was coming.

The knock came at exactly 9:17.

Claire did not move.

Another knock.

Then a voice.

“You always were good at hiding.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Thomas Vale entered.

Older than the last time she saw him.

But the same cold confidence remained.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Claire said.

Thomas smiled.

“You built the entire trap.”

A pause.

“And now you’re pretending you’re not part of it.”

Claire’s hands tightened.

“I protected Anna.”

“No.”

Thomas walked deeper into the room.

“You controlled Anna.”

Claire stared at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand everything.”

Thomas placed a file on the table.

“Daniel is getting closer.”

Claire looked at the file.

“What do you want?”

Thomas smiled.

“The same thing I wanted two years ago.”

“Whitaker Medical.”

Claire shook her head.

“You lost.”

“No.”

Thomas leaned closer.

“You lost.”

Claire’s face changed.

Because she knew he was right.

Two years earlier.

Anna had discovered the corruption.

She had discovered Thomas.

She had discovered Evelyn.

She had discovered Michael’s debt.

But she had also discovered something else.

Someone inside her own family was planning to use Lily’s inheritance.

Someone wanted control of the trust.

Someone wanted Daniel removed.

And that person was not Evelyn.

It was Claire.

Claire had not wanted Anna dead.

That was the truth.

She wanted Anna hidden.

She believed she was protecting her.

The plan was supposed to last only a few weeks.

Anna would disappear.

Thomas would be exposed.

The company would be protected.

Then Anna would return.

But Thomas changed everything.

He turned a disappearance into a permanent death.

And Claire had stayed silent.

Because she was afraid.

Afraid that revealing the truth would destroy Anna.

Afraid that Thomas would come after Lily.

Afraid that Daniel would never forgive her.

“You made one mistake,” Thomas said.

Claire looked up.

“What?”

“You believed you were the smartest person in the room.”

Back at Daniel’s house, Michael finally opened the Project Lily file completely.

“I should have shown you this earlier.”

Daniel did not answer.

Inside were Anna’s notes.

Hundreds of pages.

Investigations.

Names.

Dates.

Evidence.

Then Daniel found the page that made his blood run cold.

TRAP DESIGN: FINAL STAGE

He read slowly.

The enemy believes they are fighting for money.

They are wrong.

The money is only the bait.

Daniel looked at Michael.

“What does this mean?”

Michael’s face was pale.

Anna had not been trying to protect the company.

She had been trying to expose everyone involved.

The trust.

The inheritance.

The custody battle.

The accident.

Everything had been connected.

Daniel turned the page.

At the bottom was Anna’s final note.

If I disappear, do not search for me first.

Search for the person who benefits from my return.

Daniel froze.

Because suddenly he understood.

Anna’s return was not the danger.

Anna coming home was the trigger.

Someone had spent two years building a perfect trap.

And Anna had spent two years building a better one.

That night, Daniel received another call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Daniel.”

Anna.

His heart broke all over again.

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

“Then I’m coming.”

“No.”

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

A pause.

Then Anna whispered:

“The person who saved me…”

Daniel waited.

“…is the person who tried to kill me.”

The call ended.

Daniel stood frozen.

Because there was only one person who fit that description.

Someone who knew the accident.

Someone who knew the truth.

Someone who had protected Anna’s secret for two years.

Claire Morgan.

And for the first time, Daniel wondered:

Was Claire the person who saved Anna?

May you like

Or the person who built the trap?
