CHAPTER 13

THE FATHER WHO FOUGHT BACK
Daniel watched the recording three times.
The first time, he could not believe what he was seeing.
The second time, he searched Anna’s face for a clue.
The third time, he stopped looking for answers.
He started looking for the person who had taken them away.
The screen went dark.
Anna’s final words remained in his mind.
The person who betrayed me was not my enemy.
The person who betrayed me was the person I loved like family.
Daniel sat alone in the dark living room.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
A house that had once been filled with Anna’s laughter now felt like a museum of memories.
The coffee mug she loved was still in the cabinet.
The blanket she used when she read on the couch was still folded in the corner.
The flowers she planted outside the kitchen window were still growing.
Everything had waited for her.
Except him.
Because Daniel had spent two years grieving a woman who was never truly gone.
His phone vibrated.
Sarah.
He answered immediately.
“Tell me you found something.”
A pause.
Then Sarah said:
“I found the person who arranged Anna’s disappearance.”
Daniel stood.
“Who?”
Sarah did not answer immediately.
That frightened him more.
“Daniel, before I tell you, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“This person didn’t do it for money.”
Daniel looked at the dark screen where Anna’s face had been.
“Then why?”
Sarah’s voice lowered.
“Because they believed they were saving her.”
One hour later, Daniel sat inside Sarah’s office.
Documents covered the desk.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Old investigation reports.
Sarah pointed to a name.
Claire Morgan.
Daniel already knew.
But seeing the evidence made it worse.
“Claire helped Anna disappear.”
Sarah nodded.
“But not the way Thomas wanted.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Sarah opened another file.
“Thomas planned to make Anna disappear permanently.”
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“But Claire changed the plan.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Sarah looked at him.
“Because Claire discovered Thomas was going to kill her.”
Daniel stared.
“So Claire saved Anna?”
Sarah shook her head.
“Not completely.”
The truth was always more complicated.
That was what Daniel hated most.
He wanted villains to be simple.
He wanted monsters to look like monsters.
But every person who hurt his family had once been someone who claimed to love them.
Claire Morgan had been Anna’s closest advisor.
Not just legally.
Personally.
When Anna’s father died, Claire had helped her survive the pressure of inheriting Whitaker Medical.
She taught Anna how to fight board members.
How to read contracts.
How to recognize enemies.
Anna trusted her.
Completely.
And that trust became the weapon.
“Claire believed she could control the situation,” Sarah explained.
“She thought if Anna disappeared temporarily, Thomas would reveal himself.”
Daniel looked disgusted.
“She used my wife as bait.”
“Yes.”
“She risked her life.”
“Yes.”
“And now she expects forgiveness?”
Sarah did not answer.
Because she knew the answer.
Meanwhile, Claire sat in an abandoned office building across town.
The same place where Anna had been hidden after the accident.
The place where everything began.
She held an old photograph.
Anna.
Lily.
Daniel.
A family.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Claire whispered.
But the empty room gave no answer.
She had repeated those words for two years.
At first, she believed them.
Now she was not sure.
The door opened.
Claire looked up.
Thomas Vale stood there.
“You always were sentimental.”
Claire stood.
“You need to leave.”
Thomas smiled.
“You still think you’re in control.”
“I ended this.”
“No.”
Thomas stepped closer.
“You delayed it.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“You failed.”
Thomas laughed.
“Did I?”
He placed a newspaper on the desk.
The headline:
WHITAKER FAMILY SCANDAL EXPANDS AS NEW EVIDENCE EMERGES
“Daniel is looking.”
Thomas said.
“He will find you.”
Claire looked away.
“I know.”
Thomas smiled.
“Then why aren’t you running?”
Claire looked at the photograph.
“Because Anna deserves the truth.”
For the first time, Thomas looked annoyed.
“That’s your problem.”
“What?”
“You still think this story belongs to her.”
He leaned closer.
“It belongs to the person who survives.”
But Thomas was wrong.
Because Daniel had spent two years surviving.
And he was done.
That night, Daniel went to Lily’s room.
She was awake.
“Dad?”
He sat beside her.
“Hey.”
She looked at him carefully.
“Are we getting Mom back?”
The question almost broke him.
Daniel wanted to promise.
He wanted to say yes.
But he had learned promises could become another form of betrayal.
“I’m going to bring the truth back.”
Lily looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
“It means nobody gets to hurt our family and hide anymore.”
She was quiet.
Then she asked:
“Are you angry?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised her.
“But anger is not going to make my choices.”
“Then what will?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Your mom.”
The next morning, Daniel did something no one expected.
He called a press conference.
Not because he wanted attention.
Because he wanted to take control.
The media had spent months telling the world he was unstable.
A grieving husband.
A careless father.
A man who could not protect his own child.
Now he was going to tell them the truth.
When Daniel stepped in front of the cameras, the room became silent.
“I spent two years believing my wife was dead.”
The reporters immediately reacted.
“But she wasn’t.”
The room exploded.
Questions.
Voices.
Flashbulbs.
Daniel continued.
“Someone tried to erase Anna Whitaker’s life.”
He looked directly into the cameras.
“They failed.”
Behind the scenes, Thomas watched the broadcast.
His expression changed.
Because Daniel was not supposed to fight back.
He was supposed to break.
A message appeared on Thomas’s phone.
Daniel has released the evidence.
Thomas stared.
Another message followed.
What is your next move?
Thomas smiled.
Because he still had one card left.
The card no one knew existed.
At the same moment, Daniel received a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
You want Anna back?
Another message appeared.
Then come alone.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Sarah saw his expression.
“What happened?”
Daniel handed her the phone.
Her face changed.
“Don’t go.”
Daniel looked at her.
“They have Anna.”
“We don’t know that.”
“Yes.”
Daniel picked up his coat.
“Because if they wanted me dead…”
He looked toward the photograph of Anna and Lily.
“They would have threatened me.”
A pause.
“But they threatened my hope.”
Sarah stood.
“You’re walking into a trap.”
Daniel opened the door.
“I know.”
For two years, Daniel had been the man who survived.
The grieving husband.
The accused father.
The betrayed brother.
But now he was something else.
A father.
And fathers did not surrender when their children needed them.
They fought.
Even when the enemy was stronger.
Even when the truth was painful.
Even when the trap was already waiting.
Because this time, Daniel was not fighting to save himself.
May you like
He was fighting to bring his family home.
