CHAPTER 3

THE SECRET INSIDE ANNA’S TRUST
The signature was impossible.
Daniel stared at the document until the letters stopped looking like letters.
Anna Whitaker.
His wife’s name.
His wife’s handwriting.
His wife’s signature.
A signature that should have been impossible.
Because Anna had been dead for two years.
“Tell me that’s fake.”
Daniel’s voice was low.
Sarah Collins did not answer immediately.
That was what scared him.
Detectives always had an answer.
When they didn’t, it meant the truth was worse than expected.
“We’re verifying it,” Sarah said.
Daniel pushed the paper away.
“No.”
Sarah looked at him.
“No?”
“No, because I know my wife’s signature.”
His hands tightened.
“I watched her sign documents every day. Medical contracts. Foundation papers. School forms for Lily.”
He looked at the page again.
“That is her signature.”
Sarah leaned forward.
“Daniel, if it is authentic, then we have a bigger problem.”
“What problem?”
“Your wife may have known this was coming.”
The words landed heavily.
For two years, Daniel had lived with one painful certainty.
Anna was gone.
The accident had taken her.
Suddenly, that certainty began to crack.
“What are you saying?”
Sarah opened another file.
“Anna created a private trust six months before she died.”
Daniel frowned.
“She already had a trust.”
“Yes.”
“The Whitaker family trust.”
“Yes.”
“But this one was different.”
Sarah slid the document toward him.
“Only three people knew it existed.”
Daniel looked down.
“Anna.”
“Her attorney.”
“And?”
Sarah paused.
“Your daughter.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Lily was six.”
“She was named as a protected beneficiary.”
He read the document carefully.
The language was complicated.
Legal.
Cold.
But one sentence stood out.
The assets shall remain protected from any individual who attempts to obtain guardianship through manipulation, coercion, or false claims of incapacity.
Daniel’s breathing slowed.
Anna had planned for this.
Not everything.
Not the exact moment.
But she had feared someone would try.
“Why didn’t I know?”
Sarah looked away.
“That is what we need to find out.”
The Whitaker family had always been wealthy.
But Anna was different from the rest.
She never cared about displaying money.
She cared about protecting people.
That was why Daniel loved her.
Before she became his wife, she was the person who noticed everyone.
The employee who skipped lunch.
The child who sat alone at school.
The elderly patient who could not afford treatment.
Anna believed wealth meant responsibility.
Not power.
And that was exactly why Evelyn hated her.
Evelyn believed money existed to control people.
Anna believed money existed to help them.
Two completely different worlds.
And somehow, Daniel had been caught between them.
That evening, Daniel returned home with Sarah.
They searched through Anna’s old office.
A room he had barely entered since her death.
Too many memories lived there.
Her books.
Her notes.
Her perfume.
Everything still felt like she had just left.
Sarah opened drawers carefully.
“We need to find anything related to the trust.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he noticed something.
A small wooden box on the top shelf.
He had never seen it before.
“Anna kept that?”
Sarah looked up.
“Open it.”
Inside were three items.
A photograph.
A USB drive.
And a handwritten letter.
Daniel picked up the letter.
His hands trembled.
The envelope had his name.
For Daniel. Only if Lily is ever in danger.
His heart stopped.
He opened it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.
Someone tried to use Lily’s inheritance against her.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Anna knew.
I need you to understand something.
The danger is not always the person who hates you.
Sometimes it is the person who smiles while saying they love you.
Daniel looked at Sarah.
She was silent.
He continued.
I have spent years watching people around us change when money is involved.
Your mother?
Daniel stopped.
Anna meant Evelyn.
Evelyn has always believed she deserves control over what our family built.
But she is not the only one.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Someone close to you has been feeding her information.
Daniel felt cold.
Someone close.
I don't know how far they will go.
But if they ever try to separate Lily from you, trust the evidence, not the apologies.
The final line made Daniel freeze.
And Daniel... forgive yourself for not seeing it sooner.
The letter slipped slightly in his hand.
Because Anna knew him.
She knew he would blame himself.
Sarah picked up the USB drive.
“Should we open it?”
Daniel nodded.
The drive contained videos.
Security footage.
Private recordings.
Documents.
Then one file appeared.
FINAL MESSAGE.
Daniel hesitated.
“Do you want to watch it alone?”
Sarah asked.
He shook his head.
“No.”
The video opened.
Anna appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Smiling.
Daniel immediately covered his mouth.
Two years disappeared.
For one second, she was there again.
“Daniel,” Anna said softly.
“If you are watching this, I’m sorry.”
His eyes filled.
“I wish I could explain everything myself.”
She looked down.
Then back at the camera.
“Evelyn knows about the trust.”
Daniel froze.
“She does not know the full details. But she knows Lily’s inheritance is protected.”
Anna continued.
“She has been asking questions.”
The video paused briefly.
Then Anna said the words that changed everything.
“But the person I fear most is not Evelyn.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“It is Michael.”
The room went silent.
Sarah immediately stopped the video.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“No.”
Sarah looked at him.
“Anna was afraid of him.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My brother loved her.”
Sarah’s expression softened.
“Daniel.”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“He helped me after she died.”
“Or he positioned himself close enough to control what happened next.”
Daniel looked away.
Because that possibility hurt more than anger.
It was easier to hate an enemy.
Harder to accept that someone who hugged your child...
might have been waiting for an opportunity.
The next morning, Sarah received a call.
Her expression changed instantly.
“What happened?”
Daniel asked.
She covered the phone.
“The court received a new filing.”
“From Evelyn?”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“From Michael.”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“What did he file?”
Sarah slowly answered.
“Emergency guardianship.”
“For Lily.”
Daniel stood frozen.
The man who had lived under his roof.
The man who had kissed Lily goodnight.
The man who called himself family.
Was now asking a court to take his daughter away.
And attached to the petition...
Was a statement claiming Daniel was emotionally unstable and dangerous.
Signed by Michael.
Daniel looked at the screen.
The final piece of Anna’s warning suddenly made sense.
The person closest to him was not protecting him.
May you like
He was waiting for him to fall.
