CHAPTER 8

THE BROTHER’S FINAL BETRAYAL
Daniel had always believed betrayal arrived loudly.
A slammed door.
A shouted confession.
A person standing in front of you and admitting they had chosen to hurt you.
But Michael’s betrayal had never been loud.
That was what made it worse.
It came quietly.
In the extra key he kept.
In the documents he copied.
In the questions he asked when he pretended to help.
For two years, Daniel had allowed his younger brother to live under his roof because he believed Michael was the only family he had left.
Now he wondered if Michael had been there because he loved him.
Or because he was waiting for the right moment to destroy him.
The message on Daniel’s phone remained open.
Stop looking for the person who killed Anna. Start looking for the person who helped her disappear.
He had read it twenty times.
Every time, the same question returned.
Who helped Anna disappear?
And why?
Sarah Collins sat across from him in the empty conference room at the police station.
“You believe Claire?”
Daniel looked up.
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.”
Sarah nodded.
“That’s probably the safest answer.”
She placed several photographs on the table.
Security images.
Old.
Grainy.
From the night Anna supposedly died.
“We reviewed the accident report again.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“The report was wrong?”
“We don’t know.”
Sarah pointed at the timestamp.
“Anna’s car left the road at 10:42 p.m.”
“Yes.”
“Emergency services arrived at 10:51.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“But there is a nine-minute gap.”
Daniel frowned.
“Because the road was difficult to reach.”
“That’s what the original investigation said.”
Sarah turned over another photograph.
“But this camera was never checked.”
The image showed a gas station several miles from the accident location.
A vehicle passing by.
Daniel stared.
“That’s Anna’s car.”
“Yes.”
His heartbeat increased.
“And the driver?”
Sarah enlarged the image.
The face was unclear.
But the person was visible.
A man.
Daniel felt cold.
“Who?”
Sarah looked at him.
“We are trying to identify him.”
Daniel looked again.
The man had something familiar.
The posture.
The shape of his shoulders.
Then he noticed the watch.
A silver watch.
Michael wore one exactly like it.
“No.”
Daniel whispered.
Sarah did not answer.
Because she had noticed too.
The next morning, Daniel went home.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he needed answers.
Michael was there.
Packing a suitcase.
Daniel stopped in the doorway.
Michael looked up.
For a second, neither spoke.
Then Michael sighed.
“I knew this day would come.”
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Michael zipped the suitcase.
“It means you found out.”
The calmness of his voice hurt more than anger.
“You’re leaving?”
Michael looked away.
“Yes.”
“After everything?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
Daniel stepped inside.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re still my brother.”
Michael flinched.
Good.
Daniel hated that he wanted him to feel something.
Anything.
“You helped Evelyn.”
Michael said nothing.
“You signed the petition.”
Silence.
“You knew about the trust.”
Silence.
“You knew Anna was investigating them.”
Michael’s face changed.
There.
The reaction.
“You knew.”
Daniel whispered.
Michael sat down.
“I didn’t want this.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“That’s what everyone says.”
“I didn’t want Lily hurt.”
“But you were willing to destroy her life.”
Michael looked up.
“I was trying to save her.”
Daniel stared.
“From me?”
“No.”
“Then from who?”
Michael hesitated.
Too long.
“Michael.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Who were you afraid of?”
Michael looked toward the window.
“Evelyn.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“She wasn’t the beginning.”
Michael whispered.
“She was only the person closest to the money.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Explain.”
Michael rubbed his face.
“I found out something after Anna died.”
“What?”
“That Evelyn wasn’t controlling the company.”
Daniel frowned.
“She was being controlled.”
The room went silent.
“By who?”
Michael looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel’s anger returned.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I’m telling the truth.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re telling me another half-truth.”
Michael looked broken.
“That’s all I have left.”
Then Daniel noticed something.
A folder inside Michael’s suitcase.
A folder with Anna’s handwriting.
His heart stopped.
“Where did you get that?”
Michael immediately grabbed it.
Too late.
Daniel saw the title.
PROJECT LILY
“What is that?”
Michael said nothing.
Daniel reached for it.
Michael pulled away.
For the first time in years, Daniel saw fear in his brother’s eyes.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
Daniel froze.
“Why?”
Michael’s voice broke.
“Because if you read it, they will know you know.”
A chill moved through Daniel.
“They?”
Michael looked toward the door.
Too late.
The sound of glass breaking came from downstairs.
Both men froze.
Someone was inside the house.
Michael went pale.
“They found me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?”
Michael whispered:
“The people Anna was hiding from.”
Footsteps moved through the hallway.
Slow.
Careful.
Daniel grabbed the nearest object.
Michael stepped in front of him.
A strange thing happened.
For the first time in two years...
Michael protected him.
The door opened.
A man stood there.
Dark coat.
Calm expression.
He looked at Michael.
“You were told not to keep copies.”
Daniel stared.
Michael’s face went white.
“You know him?”
Michael did not answer.
The man smiled.
“He knows exactly who I am.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at him.
Then smiled.
“I’m the person who made sure Anna Whitaker never reached the police.”
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
“You killed her?”
The man tilted his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“I saved her.”
Daniel felt the ground disappear beneath him.
Saved her?
Impossible.
Unless…
Anna really had not died.
The man looked at Michael.
“You made one mistake.”
Michael swallowed.
“What?”
“You cared about your brother.”
Silence.
Daniel looked at Michael.
And for the first time, he saw something he had missed.
Michael was not just a betrayer.
He was someone trapped.
But trapped people could still hurt others.
The man stepped backward.
“Tell Daniel the truth.”
Michael looked terrified.
“Or I will.”
The man left.
Leaving Daniel and Michael alone.
Minutes passed.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“What is Project Lily?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“It was Anna’s plan.”
Daniel froze.
“My wife created it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael looked at him.
“Because Anna knew someone would eventually come after Lily.”
Daniel felt his heart break.
“Anna knew?”
“Yes.”
Michael’s voice became quiet.
“She knew before anyone else.”
“Then why didn’t she tell me?”
Michael looked down.
“Because she was afraid you would do exactly what you’re doing now.”
“What?”
“Fight.”
Daniel stared.
Michael whispered:
“Anna didn’t hide the truth because she didn’t trust you.”
A pause.
“She hid it because she loved you.”
Daniel looked at the folder.
Project Lily.
The secret his wife died protecting.
The secret Michael betrayed him for.
And somewhere in that file was the answer to everything.
Who wanted Lily.
Who killed Anna’s old life.
And why Michael chose to stand beside the enemy.
Daniel opened the folder.
The first page contained one sentence.
If you are reading this, then Michael has finally chosen a side.
Daniel stopped.
Below it, Anna had written:
The question is not whether my brother betrayed us.
May you like
The question is why he did it.
