CHAPTER 5

THE WOMAN WHO PROTECTED THE TRUTH

Daniel forgot how to breathe.

The voice on the phone was impossible.

For two years, he had imagined hearing it again.

In dreams.

In memories.

In the quiet moments after Lily fell asleep.

But never like this.

Never from a number he did not recognize.

Never after everything he believed about Anna’s death had started collapsing.

“Daniel?”

The voice trembled.

Not because she was afraid of him.

Because she was afraid of what he was about to learn.

Daniel gripped the phone tighter.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“It’s me.”

His chest tightened.

“No.”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

“No, that’s not possible.”

Across the room, Detective Sarah Collins watched his expression change.

She immediately stood.

“Who is it?”

Daniel did not answer.

He could not.

Because the impossible thing on the other end of the phone had a voice.

A voice that sounded exactly like the woman he buried.

“Daniel,” the woman whispered.

“You have to listen to me.”

His eyes moved toward the photograph on the bookshelf.

Anna smiling.

Anna holding Lily.

Anna promising him forever.

“Where are you?”

The question came out broken.

Another pause.

“I can’t tell you yet.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Of course.

Even now.

Even after two years of pain.

There were still secrets.

“Anna is dead.”

The silence that followed hurt more than any answer.

Then the woman spoke.

“I know.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

Sarah stepped closer.

“What did she say?”

He lifted one finger.

Wait.

The voice continued.

“My name is Claire Morgan.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

“I worked with Anna.”

A cold feeling spread through him.

“Where?”

“At Whitaker Medical.”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

The detective’s expression changed.

“Why are you calling me?”

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Because Anna trusted me with the truth.”

The next sentence changed everything.

“Anna did not die because of an accident.”

Daniel stopped moving.

The room became silent.

Even Sarah seemed frozen.

“What did you say?”

Claire lowered her voice.

“Someone wanted her gone.”

Daniel felt anger rising.

Not the explosive kind.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that came from years of grief.

“Who?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“Anna knew she was being watched.”

He looked at the evidence scattered across the table.

The trust.

The recordings.

The payments.

Michael.

Evelyn.

Everything suddenly connected.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

Claire became quiet.

“Because she was protecting you.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Protecting me?”

His voice cracked.

“She left me alone with this.”

“No.”

Claire’s voice became stronger.

“She left you a way out.”

Daniel looked toward Sarah.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Anna prepared for the possibility that she would not survive.”

A memory appeared.

Anna sitting at the kitchen table six months before her death.

Her expression serious.

Her hands wrapped around a coffee mug.

“Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“If something happened to me…”

He remembered laughing.

“Don’t say things like that.”

But Anna had not laughed.

“If something happened to me, promise me you won’t trust the person who cries the loudest.”

At the time, he thought it was just fear.

A strange thought.

A wife worrying about the future.

Now he realized.

She was warning him.

“Where is the proof?”

Daniel asked.

Claire answered immediately.

“Hidden in the old Whitaker research building.”

Daniel frowned.

“That building was closed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Claire hesitated.

“Because Anna discovered financial crimes inside the company.”

Sarah immediately began writing notes.

“What kind of crimes?”

Daniel asked.

“Money laundering.”

His stomach dropped.

“Through Whitaker Medical?”

“Yes.”

“Who was involved?”

Claire was quiet.

Then:

“Your mother-in-law.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He already suspected.

But hearing it made it real.

“Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“And Michael?”

Another pause.

Claire’s silence was the answer.

Daniel felt betrayed all over again.

“He helped her.”

“I don’t know how deep he went.”

Claire said.

“But Anna believed he was trapped.”

Daniel frowned.

“Trapped?”

“Michael was not the person who started this.”

“But he joined.”

Claire did not deny it.

“Yes.”

The call ended ten minutes later.

Claire gave Daniel an address.

The old Whitaker Medical research facility.

A place abandoned after a corporate restructuring.

A place Anna had apparently used as a hiding place.

Sarah immediately made plans.

“We go there tonight.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Why not tomorrow?”

“Because if Claire is telling the truth, someone else may already know.”

Daniel looked toward Lily’s hospital room.

His daughter was still asleep.

“I can’t leave her.”

Sarah nodded.

“I’ll arrange protection.”

Two hours later, Daniel stood outside the abandoned building.

Rain covered the parking lot.

The same kind of rain that had fallen the night Anna died.

The building looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Dust-covered signs.

A place everyone believed had no value anymore.

But Anna had hidden something here.

They entered through a side door.

Inside, the air smelled old.

Sarah used a flashlight.

“Anna was careful.”

Daniel looked around.

“She always was.”

They reached the basement.

At the end of a hallway was a locked metal door.

No sign.

No label.

Nothing.

Daniel touched the door.

A strange feeling moved through him.

Anna had stood here.

She had touched this same door.

Sarah examined the lock.

“It’s electronic.”

Daniel noticed something.

A small symbol carved into the metal.

The Whitaker family crest.

He pressed his finger against it.

The lock opened.

Inside was a small room.

A private archive.

Files.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Everything Anna had collected.

Sarah walked toward the table.

“Daniel.”

He looked.

There was a folder.

His name.

DANIEL WHITAKER

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside were documents about him.

Medical records.

Financial information.

Private conversations.

Someone had been investigating him too.

Then he found the final page.

A handwritten note from Anna.

Daniel,

If you found this, then they failed.

He swallowed.

The people who hurt us believe they control the story because they control the information.

They are wrong.

The truth survives because someone protects it.

Daniel turned the page.

The next sentence made his blood run cold.

The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.

He stopped.

Sarah looked over.

“What?”

Daniel continued reading.

Evelyn is dangerous.

Michael is guilty.

But neither of them is the person who planned my death.

The room went silent.

There was one final line.

The person who destroyed our family is someone Daniel trusts completely.

Daniel stared at the words.

Someone he trusted.

Someone closer than Evelyn.

Closer than Michael.

Then Sarah’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What happened?”

She listened.

Then slowly looked at Daniel.

“Lily woke up.”

Relief flashed through him.

Until he saw Sarah’s face.

“What is it?”

Sarah lowered the phone.

“She asked for you.”

Daniel nodded.

“Okay.”

“But before she woke up…”

Sarah paused.

“She told the nurse something.”

Daniel felt his heart tighten.

“What?”

Sarah looked directly at him.

“She said the person who gave Grandma the dessert instructions…”

A pause.

“Was someone she knew.”

Daniel felt the room spin.

Because Lily had seen more than they thought.

And the child who everyone believed was only a victim...

May you like

might be the one person who could expose the entire truth.
