CHAPTER 9

THE TRUTH ABOUT ANNA’S DEATH
Daniel read the sentence again.
The question is not whether my brother betrayed us.
The question is why he did it.
For several seconds, he could not move.
Anna’s handwriting stared back at him.
The familiar curve of every letter.
The same handwriting that had once filled grocery lists, birthday cards, and notes left beside his coffee every morning.
A handwriting that belonged to a woman he thought he had lost forever.
But now every word felt like a message from someone who had known she might disappear.
Someone who had planned for the possibility that she would never come home.
Michael sat across from him.
Silent.
Waiting.
Daniel closed the folder.
“Start talking.”
Michael looked down.
“I don’t know where to begin.”
“Try the beginning.”
His voice was colder than he intended.
“Try the part where my wife died and you knew more than you told me.”
Michael flinched.
Good.
Daniel wanted him to feel the weight of every lie.
“I was wrong.”
Michael whispered.
“I know.”
“No, Daniel.”
Michael looked up.
“You don’t know.”
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“Because if you knew, you would hate me even more.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Nothing you say will surprise me anymore.”
Michael looked at the folder.
Then at him.
“You’re wrong.”
A pause.
“Because Anna’s death was never what you thought.”
Two years earlier.
That was where Michael began.
Two years earlier, before the accident.
Before the funeral.
Before everyone believed Anna Whitaker was gone.
“Anna came to me.”
Michael said.
“She was scared.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Why?”
“She discovered money missing from Whitaker Medical.”
Daniel nodded.
“The same fraud we’re investigating now.”
Michael shook his head.
“More than fraud.”
He opened the folder.
Inside was a document Daniel had never seen.
A list of names.
Executives.
Investors.
Board members.
People connected to the company.
At the bottom was one name highlighted.
Thomas Vale.
Daniel frowned.
“Who is that?”
Michael looked at him.
“That’s the person you should have been looking for.”
Thomas Vale.
A name Daniel remembered.
Barely.
A former Whitaker Medical executive.
A man who left the company years ago after a disagreement with Anna’s father.
“He was angry,” Michael said.
“Your father removed him from the board.”
“Why?”
“Because he discovered Thomas was stealing from the company.”
Daniel stared at the name.
“So he came back for revenge?”
Michael nodded.
“He didn’t just want money.”
“What did he want?”
Michael looked at the folder.
“Control.”
Daniel opened the next page.
A photograph.
Anna.
Talking to Thomas Vale.
His stomach tightened.
“When was this taken?”
“Three weeks before her accident.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Michael looked away.
“Because Anna told me not to.”
Daniel froze.
“She trusted you?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“She trusted me enough to ask for help.”
That hurt more than any confession.
Because Michael had been given something Daniel never had.
Anna’s trust.
“She knew Thomas was dangerous,” Michael continued.
“She believed he had someone inside the company.”
“Who?”
Michael hesitated.
Daniel already knew.
“Evelyn?”
“No.”
Michael looked at him.
“Someone closer.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
Michael swallowed.
“Anna suspected me.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“She thought I was involved.”
The words hung between them.
Daniel stood.
“You expect me to believe she suspected you but still asked you for help?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael’s eyes filled.
“Because she knew I was weak.”
Daniel said nothing.
Michael continued.
“I owed money.”
“To who?”
“Thomas.”
The answer landed like a punch.
Michael explained everything.
Months before Anna died, he had made investments he could not afford.
He borrowed money.
He lost.
Thomas Vale offered help.
At first, it seemed generous.
Then it became a debt.
Then it became control.
“Thomas knew exactly how to manipulate people,” Michael said.
“He didn’t threaten me with violence.”
“What did he threaten?”
Michael looked at him.
“Exposure.”
Daniel understood.
Michael’s shame.
His mistakes.
His financial problems.
His fear.
“So you helped him.”
Michael nodded.
“At first.”
Daniel looked away.
The worst part was that Michael was not denying it.
“I gave him information.”
“What information?”
“Anna’s schedule.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“You helped him find her.”
Michael broke down.
“I didn’t know what he planned.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
“I thought he wanted company records.”
Michael wiped his face.
“I thought he wanted leverage.”
A pause.
“I never thought he wanted Anna dead.”
Daniel walked to the window.
Outside, the city continued moving.
People laughing.
Cars driving.
Life continuing.
While his entire world was falling apart.
“What happened that night?”
Daniel asked.
Michael looked down.
“Anna called me.”
“When?”
“Twenty minutes before the accident.”
Daniel turned around.
“She called you?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“She said she had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“Who was controlling Thomas.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Michael’s voice dropped.
“She said she finally knew who betrayed her.”
A long silence.
“Then what?”
“I drove to meet her.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“You were there?”
Michael nodded.
“I arrived after the crash.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Michael looked destroyed.
“Because Thomas was there.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“He was standing near the road.”
“Watching.”
The pieces began connecting.
The accident.
The missing evidence.
The false story.
“Did he kill her?”
Michael looked at him.
“No.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then what happened?”
Michael’s voice broke.
“Anna survived.”
The room went completely silent.
Daniel could not process the words.
“Say that again.”
“Anna survived the crash.”
His hands shook.
“Then why…”
Michael looked at him.
“Because Thomas wanted everyone to believe she was dead.”
Daniel felt dizzy.
“Where is she?”
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation terrified him.
“Michael.”
His brother looked away.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“Then who does?”
Michael looked toward the door.
And Daniel followed his eyes.
Claire Morgan.
The woman who claimed she was protecting Anna.
The woman who knew the truth.
“She knows,” Michael whispered.
At that exact moment, Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A familiar voice.
“Daniel.”
His blood ran cold.
“Anna?”
Silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
The voice continued.
“I wanted to come home.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“Where are you?”
Another pause.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.”
Her voice shook.
“Thomas found out I was alive.”
Daniel stood frozen.
“What?”
“He knows you’re looking.”
A sound came through the phone.
Like someone moving nearby.
Then Anna whispered:
“Don’t trust Claire.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Michael looked at him.
“What happened?”
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“She’s alive.”
Michael’s face changed.
But before either of them could speak, another message appeared.
A photograph.
Anna.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
With a note placed beside her.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.
Daniel stared at the image.
Because the truth about Anna’s death had finally been revealed.
May you like
But the truth about her disappearance had just begun.
