Chapter 10 — The Recording

Chapter 10 — The Recording

The first thing I heard after Anna told me Evelyn had taken Lily was my own heartbeat.

The second was the gunshot behind us.

“Run!”

Anna pulled me through the underground tunnel.

Sarah and Michael followed.

We didn't stop until we reached an iron staircase leading back toward the surface.

When we finally emerged, the sun was beginning to rise.

I turned toward Anna.

“Where is Lily?”

“Evelyn has her.”

“I know that.”

“She took her to the Atlas Court.”

“What is the Atlas Court?”

Anna looked at Sarah.

Sarah's face was pale.

“A private tribunal,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You knew about it?”

“I knew rumors.”

“Rumors?”

“Judges. Lawyers. Corporate trustees. Powerful people.”

“For what?”

“Settling disputes that never reach public courts.”

Anna shook her head.

“That's only part of it.”

“What else?”

“They decide who controls Atlas.”

I looked at her.

“Evelyn wants control.”

“Yes.”

“Victor wants control.”

“Yes.”

“My father wants control.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily is the key.”

Anna nodded.

“But there is one thing they don't know.”

“What?”

Anna looked directly at me.

“The Court cannot transfer Atlas unless the original recording is played.”

“What recording?”

“The recording your father has been trying to destroy for twenty years.”

I felt a chill.

“What does it contain?”

Anna's voice dropped.

“The truth about how Atlas was created.”

We returned to the safe house.

Sarah locked every door.

Michael checked the windows.

Anna sat at the kitchen table.

For the first time in two years, I was sitting across from my wife.

Alive.

Real.

Not a photograph.

Not a memory.

Alive.

I didn't know whether to hug her or hate her.

So I did neither.

I asked the only question that mattered.

“Where is the recording?”

Anna looked at me.

“I don't know.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“Daniel—”

“Everyone knows something except me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You kept my wife dead.”

“I know.”

“You let me raise Lily believing she was mine.”

“I know.”

“You watched me grieve.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I watched you every day.”

“That doesn't make it better.”

“I know.”

I stood.

“Then tell me everything.”

Anna looked down.

“I will.”

She took a small recorder from her coat.

“Because I recorded myself too.”

She pressed play.

Her own voice filled the room.

But it wasn't the Anna sitting across from me.

It was Anna from two years earlier.

Frightened.

Whispering.

“If Daniel ever hears this, it means the plan failed.”

I looked at Anna.

She didn't move.

The recording continued.

“Daniel, there are things I couldn't tell you while I was alive.”

My throat tightened.

“If I disappear, don't trust the police.”

Sarah looked at me.

“Keep listening.”

Anna's recorded voice continued.

“Atlas wasn't created to make money.”

A pause.

“It was created to make sure no government could ever control its founders.”

I frowned.

“The people who built Atlas created a system above the law.”

Sarah whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Anna's recording continued.

“They created private courts.”

“Private banks.”

“Private security.”

“And a succession system that could transfer billions without public oversight.”

I looked at Michael.

He lowered his head.

Anna continued.

“But the founders made one mistake.”

“They created a witness.”

I leaned forward.

“Who?”

The recording crackled.

Then:

“Me.”

I froze.

Anna continued.

“I was the only person who had copies of the original founding agreement.”

“And the only person who knew about the recording.”

I looked at the woman sitting across from me.

“That's why they wanted you dead.”

“Yes.”

“But what is on the recording?”

Anna's recorded voice answered before I could ask.

“Your father confessing.”

My heart stopped.

The recording changed.

A man's voice replaced Anna's.

My father's voice.

Younger.

Angrier.

Terrified.

“I didn't kill Elizabeth.”

Anna's voice asked:

“Then who did?”

“I don't know.”

“You were there.”

“I was trying to save her.”

“You lied to everyone.”

“I had no choice.”

The recording crackled.

Then my father's voice became clearer.

“Thomas created Atlas.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted to use it to expose corruption.”

“Yes.”

“But the board wanted power.”

“Yes.”

“They killed him.”

A pause.

“Who?”

My father whispered:

“Victor.”

Anna asked:

“And Lily?”

My father's voice became shaky.

“Thomas's daughter.”

“What about Daniel?”

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel is mine.”

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“I took him because Elizabeth was dead.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor wanted him too.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel carries the original succession bloodline.”

I looked at Anna.

She closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

“Lily carries Thomas's.”

Anna asked:

“Then what happens if they are combined?”

My father's voice became almost inaudible.

“They control everything.”

The recording stopped.

I stared at Anna.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who Lily was.”

“Yes.”

“And you still married me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Anna looked at me.

“Because I loved you.”

I shook my head.

“Was that the only reason?”

She hesitated.

“No.”

My heart sank.

“What else?”

“Because I needed to protect Lily.”

“You used me.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I fell in love with you.”

I couldn't speak.

Anna wiped away a tear.

“You were supposed to be a shield.”

“I was a person.”

“I know.”

“You married me because I was useful.”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Then Anna said:

“But somewhere along the way, you became the only person I trusted.”

I looked away.

I wanted to hate her.

It would have been easier.

But I couldn't.

Because I remembered every morning.

Every argument.

Every stupid joke.

Every night Anna had fallen asleep with her head on my shoulder.

Those memories were real.

Even if the beginning had been a lie.

Sarah interrupted.

“We have a bigger problem.”

She placed her phone on the table.

A live video was playing.

Evelyn.

She was standing inside a marble chamber.

Behind her was Lily.

My daughter was sitting in a chair.

Alive.

But terrified.

Evelyn smiled at the camera.

“Daniel.”

I stepped closer.

“Let her go.”

“Come to the Court.”

“I'll come.”

“Alone.”

“No.”

“Then Lily loses her inheritance.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn held up a document.

“The Atlas Court has authorized an emergency guardianship hearing.”

“You don't have authority.”

“I do now.”

“Who signed it?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Judge Ward.”

Sarah swore.

The screen showed Lily.

She was crying.

“Daddy…”

I stepped toward the screen.

“I'm coming.”

Evelyn leaned toward Lily.

“Tell your father what happens if he refuses.”

Lily shook her head.

Evelyn grabbed her shoulder.

I felt something inside me snap.

“Touch her again and—”

“And what?”

She smiled.

“You don't have power anymore.”

Then the screen went black.

Sarah stood.

“We need a warrant.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“I can't wait.”

“Daniel, if you walk into that Court without protection—”

“Then I'll walk in anyway.”

Anna stood.

“I'll come with you.”

“No.”

She looked hurt.

“Why?”

“Because they want you too.”

“Exactly.”

I stared.

“If you're there, they'll reveal themselves.”

Anna nodded.

“That's what I was hoping you'd realize.”

Michael stepped forward.

“I'm coming.”

I looked at him.

“You've done enough.”

“I know.”

“But Lily needs you.”

Michael nodded.

Sarah sighed.

“Fine.”

She loaded her weapon.

“But we do this my way.”

The Atlas Court was beneath the old financial district.

No public entrance.

No sign.

No records.

We entered through an underground parking garage.

Anna led us to a black steel door.

A guard opened it.

He looked at me.

“Daniel Hart?”

“Yes.”

“You're expected.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“He comes with us.”

The guard shook his head.

“No weapons.”

Sarah laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

The guard looked behind him.

“Then the hearing doesn't begin.”

I looked at Sarah.

She reluctantly handed over her weapon.

Michael did the same.

Anna had nothing.

I entered alone.

The chamber was enormous.

Twenty people sat around a circular table.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Corporate trustees.

Men and women who had spent decades hiding behind wealth.

At the center sat Evelyn.

Beside her was Judge Ward.

Lily sat behind them.

Her hands were tied.

I stopped.

“Untie her.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Sit.”

“No.”

“Sit, Daniel.”

I stepped forward.

“You touch my daughter again, and this hearing ends differently.”

Evelyn laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Judge Ward stood.

“This tribunal recognizes the succession dispute.”

I looked around.

“This isn't a court.”

Judge Ward smiled.

“Legally speaking, it doesn't need to be.”

My stomach turned.

Evelyn placed a document on the table.

“By bloodline, Lily is the heir to the Vale estate.”

“She's a child.”

“Exactly.”

“Which means she needs a guardian.”

“And I am prepared to serve.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“She was in danger.”

“You poisoned her.”

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“You can't prove that.”

“I can.”

I held up my phone.

The recording from the luncheon.

Evelyn's face changed.

“You recorded me?”

“Lily did.”

Judge Ward stood.

“That evidence is inadmissible.”

“Why?”

“Chain of custody.”

Sarah's voice came from the doorway.

“Then maybe this will help.”

Everyone turned.

Sarah walked into the chamber.

She had ignored the weapons rule.

And she wasn't alone.

Federal agents followed her.

The guards reached for their weapons.

Sarah shouted:

“Don't.”

The room erupted.

Judge Ward slammed her hand on the table.

“This tribunal is protected by private charter!”

Sarah smiled.

“Not from federal warrants.”

Evelyn stood.

“You can't do this.”

“We can.”

Sarah held up a document.

“Financial crimes. Child endangerment. Conspiracy. Kidnapping.”

She looked around the room.

“Every person in this room is under investigation.”

Panic spread.

Then the lights went out.

Darkness.

A scream.

A gunshot.

Then another.

I reached for Lily.

“Stay down!”

Someone grabbed my shoulder.

I struck blindly.

The person fell.

I pulled Lily toward me.

“Daddy!”

“I've got you.”

She clung to me.

Then a voice echoed through the chamber.

“Play the recording.”

I froze.

Anna.

She stood at the center of the room.

Holding a small recorder.

Every light came back on.

Anna pressed a button.

The recording played.

My father's voice filled the chamber.

“I built Atlas.”

Everyone went silent.

“I created the private court.”

“I created the succession system.”

“And I authorized the elimination of anyone who threatened the organization.”

The judges stared at each other.

The recording continued.

“I ordered Elizabeth Vale's death.”

Anna closed her eyes.

I looked at Lily.

She was trembling.

Then my father's voice said:

“And if necessary…”

A pause.

“…I will eliminate my own son.”

The room exploded into chaos.

Someone tried to run.

Federal agents stopped him.

Judge Ward stood frozen.

Evelyn stared at Anna.

“You.”

Anna looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You recorded him.”

“Yes.”

“Where is the original?”

Anna smiled.

“Safe.”

Evelyn's face went pale.

“Where?”

Anna looked at me.

“With Daniel.”

I realized she wasn't looking at my hands.

She was looking at the device in my pocket.

The third account.

The recording was inside it.

I had unknowingly carried the evidence into the Court.

Evelyn suddenly lunged toward me.

I stepped back.

Federal agents grabbed her.

She screamed.

“You don't understand!”

I held Lily tightly.

“I understand enough.”

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“I remember something.”

“What?”

She looked at Evelyn.

“She came to the hospital before the luncheon.”

My heart stopped.

“What did she do?”

Lily looked frightened.

“She gave someone a phone.”

“Who?”

She pointed toward the courtroom.

At Judge Ward.

I stared.

Judge Ward's face went white.

Sarah immediately moved toward her.

“Judge Ward.”

The judge stepped backward.

“I don't know what she's talking about.”

Lily shook her head.

“She said…”

“What?”

Lily whispered:

“She said if Daddy didn't lose custody…”

She swallowed.

“…they would kill Mommy.”

I froze.

“Mommy?”

Lily nodded.

“She said Mommy was still alive.”

Everyone turned toward Anna.

Anna's face went pale.

Evelyn smiled.

And suddenly I understood.

This entire hearing wasn't about Lily.

It was a trap.

They hadn't brought Anna here to expose her.

They had brought her here because someone wanted to force her out of hiding.

Someone who knew exactly where she would go.

Someone who had been waiting for this moment.

Sarah's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“The hospital just called.”

“What happened?”

“They found a body.”

My heart stopped.

“Whose?”

Sarah looked at Anna.

Then back at me.

“They believe it's Thomas Vale.”

Anna collapsed into a chair.

“No.”

Sarah continued.

“And there's something else.”

“What?”

“The body was found beside a recording device.”

I stared.

“What recording?”

Sarah swallowed.

“The victim recorded his final message.”

“Who is it addressed to?”

She looked at me.

“You.”

Then the phone began playing.

A man's voice.

Weak.

Dying.

But unmistakable.

Thomas.

“Daniel…”

I stopped breathing.

“If you're hearing this…”

A cough.

“…then Anna failed to protect you.”

I looked at Anna.

Thomas continued.

“Your father is not the greatest threat.”

A long silence.

“It's Lily's biological mother.”

My blood froze.

I looked at my daughter.

Thomas whispered:

“Because Lily's mother…”

The recording cut out.

Static.

Then one final sentence.

“…is not Anna.”

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

And for the first time that night, Anna looked genuinely terrified.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who Lily's real mother was.

To be continued...
