Chapter 11 — The Truth About Anna

Chapter 11 — The Truth About Anna

Anna didn't move.

Neither did I.

The recording had ended, but Thomas's final words were still echoing inside my head.

Lily's mother is not Anna.

I looked at the woman standing across the courtroom.

My wife.

The woman who had disappeared.

The woman who had lied to me.

The woman who had risked everything to protect Lily.

And suddenly, for the first time, I wondered whether even her name was real.

“Anna.”

She looked at me.

“Tell me the truth.”

Her lips trembled.

“Daniel…”

“Who is Lily's mother?”

Anna closed her eyes.

Evelyn smiled.

Judge Ward looked terrified.

And Sarah slowly reached for her weapon.

Anna whispered:

“Her name is Elizabeth.”

My heart stopped.

“Elizabeth Vale?”

Anna nodded.

I looked at the photograph from the archive.

The woman holding the newborn baby.

My biological mother.

The woman my father had claimed was dead.

“You said Elizabeth was your friend.”

“She was.”

“You said she died.”

“She did.”

“You said Lily was your daughter.”

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

“I raised her.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“Is Elizabeth Lily's biological mother?”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Then why did you let me believe Lily was yours?”

“Because Elizabeth asked me to.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew she was going to die.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Anna nodded.

“She knew.”

Anna sat down.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

Not mysterious.

Not powerful.

Just broken.

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Elizabeth was my sister.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Half-sister.”

“You're a Vale?”

“Yes.”

My mind raced.

“Then Thomas…”

“Was my brother-in-law.”

“Victor?”

“My half-brother.”

I stared at her.

“You were part of Atlas.”

“I was born into it.”

“Then why did you marry me?”

Anna looked at me.

“Because you were the only person outside Atlas I ever trusted.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That's convenient.”

“It wasn't.”

“You knew everything.”

“Not everything.”

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Elizabeth.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Lily wasn't my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Victor.”

“Yes.”

“And you still let me believe you were an ordinary woman who fell in love with me.”

Anna whispered:

“I did fall in love with you.”

I looked away.

“But you didn't tell me who you were.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Of what would happen if you knew.”

She looked toward the courtroom.

“This.”

Anna began speaking.

“Elizabeth discovered Atlas when she was twenty-four.”

“She found evidence that the founders were using the organization to manipulate elections, courts, banks, and corporate ownership.”

“She wanted to expose them.”

“Thomas supported her.”

“Victor opposed her.”

“And your father…”

Anna stopped.

“What about my father?”

“He wanted Atlas for himself.”

I remembered the recording.

My father's voice.

I built Atlas.

Anna continued.

“He believed the organization should belong to one family.”

“His family.”

“But Elizabeth discovered something that changed everything.”

“What?”

“She found the original succession agreement.”

I looked at the device in my pocket.

“The third account.”

“Yes.”

“The agreement named me.”

Anna nodded.

“Because you were born from the bloodline of the original founders.”

I shook my head.

“Why would Elizabeth hide me?”

“Because your father wanted you dead.”

“Why?”

“Because if you survived, he could never legally control Atlas forever.”

I stared.

“So he took me.”

“Yes.”

“And Elizabeth?”

“She tried to stop him.”

“What happened?”

Anna's voice broke.

“She lost.”

The courtroom was silent.

Even Evelyn had stopped smiling.

Anna continued.

“Elizabeth knew she was dying.”

“So she gave Lily to me.”

“Why you?”

“Because she trusted me.”

“What about Thomas?”

“He was already being hunted.”

“And Victor?”

“He wanted Lily dead.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily was Thomas's heir.”

I looked at Lily.

“So Elizabeth gave her to you.”

“Yes.”

“And you became her mother.”

“I became the person who raised her.”

I looked at Anna.

“Why did you let me believe she was mine?”

“Because your father was searching for her.”

“And if he knew she was Thomas's daughter?”

“He would kill her.”

“And if he knew I was raising her?”

“He would use you to find her.”

I swallowed.

“So you married me.”

“Yes.”

“To hide Lily.”

“Yes.”

“But then you fell in love with me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

Anna looked down.

“Because Victor found us.”

The night Anna supposedly died began to make sense.

She had discovered that Victor had located Lily.

He knew about the succession.

He knew about Elizabeth.

He knew about me.

And he knew Anna was protecting the child.

“So you staged your death.”

“Yes.”

“You left me.”

“I had to.”

“You could have told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone inside your house was working for Victor.”

My stomach tightened.

“Michael.”

Anna nodded.

“Michael was forced to work for him.”

“He told me.”

“But there was another person.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

Anna hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your father.”

I froze.

“My father was inside my house?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Several times.”

“How?”

“Through Michael.”

I looked at Michael.

He lowered his head.

“He used Michael to monitor you.”

I felt sick.

“All these years…”

Anna nodded.

“He knew everything.”

“About Lily?”

“Yes.”

“About you?”

“Yes.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Lily.

She was watching us.

Her eyes were full of confusion.

“Does she know?”

Anna shook her head.

“She knows you are her father.”

“But I'm not.”

“You are.”

“Not biologically.”

“Daniel…”

“I don't care about blood.”

I looked at Lily.

“She calls me Dad.”

Anna smiled through tears.

“That was always enough.”

I walked toward my daughter.

I knelt beside her.

“Lily.”

She looked at me.

“Am I still your daddy?”

She threw her arms around me.

“Yes.”

I held her tightly.

“Then nothing changes.”

Anna turned away.

She was crying.

Then Sarah interrupted.

“We have another problem.”

She held up the recording device.

“The Thomas recording was edited.”

I stood.

“What?”

“There are missing seconds.”

“How do you know?”

“Because the file metadata shows a cut.”

“Can you recover it?”

“Maybe.”

She handed the device to an analyst.

Five minutes later, the missing section played.

Thomas's voice returned.

Weak.

Frightened.

“Lily's biological mother…”

Static.

“…is not Anna.”

A pause.

“She is Elizabeth.”

I looked at Anna.

Then Thomas continued.

“But Elizabeth didn't give Lily to Anna voluntarily.”

I froze.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“She was forced.”

Anna's face went white.

Thomas whispered:

“Anna took Lily because Elizabeth was dying.”

“That is why she has spent years pretending to be Lily's mother.”

Then another voice appeared.

A woman's voice.

I knew it.

Evelyn.

“Does Daniel know?”

Thomas answered:

“No.”

Evelyn asked:

“Will he ever?”

“No.”

Then Thomas said:

“If he discovers the truth, he'll come looking for me.”

Evelyn laughed.

“And when he does?”

Thomas whispered:

“We kill him.”

The recording ended.

I looked at Evelyn.

She was trembling.

“You knew.”

She didn't answer.

“You knew Elizabeth.”

Evelyn stared at me.

“I knew everyone.”

“You helped my father.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Victor.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Judge Ward.”

She remained silent.

“You tried to take Lily.”

“I was protecting her.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“You were protecting Atlas.”

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“Atlas is bigger than any of us.”

“Not anymore.”

“You think arresting a few people will destroy it?”

She laughed.

“Daniel, Atlas has survived wars.”

“Presidents.”

“Financial crashes.”

“Murders.”

“It will survive you.”

I looked at the federal agents.

“Maybe.”

Then I looked at Lily.

“But it won't survive the truth.”

Evelyn's expression changed.

“What truth?”

I held up the third account.

“The succession recording.”

She froze.

“You don't have the complete file.”

“No.”

“But I know who does.”

Her eyes widened.

“Who?”

I looked at Anna.

She looked at me.

Then she understood.

“You.”

Anna nodded.

“I kept a copy.”

Evelyn stepped backward.

“No.”

Anna smiled sadly.

“You always underestimated me.”

Evelyn suddenly lunged toward her.

Federal agents restrained her.

She screamed:

“You ruined everything!”

Anna looked at her.

“No.”

“You destroyed your own family!”

Anna's expression hardened.

“You destroyed it long before I did.”

The agents arrested Evelyn.

Judge Ward was taken into custody.

The Atlas Court was sealed.

For the first time in decades, the private tribunal was silent.

But the war wasn't over.

Victor was still missing.

My father was still alive.

And Thomas's body had raised more questions than answers.

Sarah approached me.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“Thomas's body.”

“What about it?”

“The DNA doesn't match.”

I stared.

“What?”

“It's not Thomas.”

My heart stopped.

“Then whose body is it?”

“We don't know.”

“Then Thomas is alive.”

“Probably.”

I looked at Anna.

She nodded slowly.

“He planned this.”

“Why?”

“To make Victor believe he was dead.”

I frowned.

“Then where is he?”

Anna looked toward the window.

“Somewhere close.”

“Where?”

She hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“I think he's coming for Lily.”

I tightened my grip around my daughter.

“Why?”

“Because the succession isn't complete.”

“What do you mean?”

Anna looked at the device.

“You accepted the transfer.”

“Yes.”

“That only made you the provisional successor.”

“Then who becomes the final successor?”

Anna whispered:

“Lily.”

I looked at my daughter.

“What happens when she turns eighteen?”

“Atlas legally transfers to her.”

“And if she dies before then?”

Anna looked at me.

“The succession returns to the biological founder.”

“Thomas.”

“Yes.”

I understood.

Thomas didn't want Lily dead.

He wanted her alive.

He wanted her protected.

Because as long as Lily lived, Atlas remained locked.

But if she reached eighteen...

She would control everything.

Unless someone controlled her first.

My stomach tightened.

“Then Victor isn't trying to kill Lily.”

“No.”

“He's trying to control her.”

“Yes.”

“And my father?”

“Wants you.”

“Why?”

“Because if you become the provisional successor, he can use you to access Atlas.”

I looked at Anna.

“And you?”

She hesitated.

“I want Lily free.”

I believed her.

Finally.

That evening, Lily slept in my arms.

We were in a secure house outside the city.

Sarah had arranged protection.

Michael was in the next room.

Anna sat beside the window.

For the first time, there were no secrets between us.

At least I thought so.

Then Lily woke.

“Daddy?”

“I'm here.”

She looked toward Anna.

“Mommy?”

Anna smiled.

“Yes?”

Lily whispered:

“Why did you tell me not to trust the man in the photograph?”

Anna froze.

“What photograph?”

“The one under your bed.”

I looked at Anna.

“What photograph?”

She didn't answer.

Lily continued.

“The man with Grandma.”

Anna stood.

“Daniel…”

“What photograph?”

She looked terrified.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“Destroyed?”

“What is it?”

Anna walked to the bedroom.

She returned carrying a small envelope.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Evelyn.

My father.

And another man.

A man I didn't recognize.

But Lily did.

She pointed.

“That man.”

I stared.

“Who is he?”

Anna's face went pale.

“He is the reason Elizabeth died.”

“Who?”

Anna whispered:

“Thomas's father.”

I frowned.

“But Thomas's father died decades ago.”

Anna shook her head.

“No.”

“He didn't.”

“He has been alive all this time.”

“Where?”

Anna looked at the photograph.

“He owns the largest private bank in the country.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does he want?”

Anna looked at me.

“The same thing everyone else wants.”

“The Atlas succession.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

Old.

Calm.

Powerful.

“Daniel Hart.”

“Yes.”

“You have my granddaughter.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

The man laughed.

“You don't know me.”

“But I know you.”

“How?”

“Because your wife has been telling you stories.”

I looked at Anna.

She was crying.

The man continued:

“Bring Lily to me.”

“No.”

“Then I will take her.”

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Call me Arthur.”

My blood ran cold.

Arthur Vale.

The name written on the oldest Atlas documents.

The man everyone believed had died thirty years ago.

Thomas's father.

Elizabeth's father.

Victor's father.

And apparently...

the oldest surviving founder of Atlas.

He spoke one final sentence before ending the call.

“Daniel, you think this story began with your father.”

A pause.

“It began with me.”

The line went dead.

I looked at Anna.

She whispered:

“Now you know why I was afraid.”

Outside, headlights appeared beyond the gate.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then ten.

Security alarms began screaming.

Sarah ran into the room.

“Everyone down!”

Michael grabbed Lily.

Anna reached for me.

And through the window, a black limousine stopped.

The rear door opened.

An old man stepped out.

He looked directly toward the house.

Even from a distance, I could see him smiling.

Arthur Vale had finally come out of hiding.

And he wasn't coming for the empire.

May you like

He was coming for Lily.

To be continued...
