Chapter 9 — The Night Lily Disappeared

Chapter 9 — The Night Lily Disappeared
The hospital hallway was empty.
Too empty.
I ran through the automatic doors with Sarah and Michael behind me, but the moment I reached Lily's room, I knew.
She was gone.
The bed was still warm.
The pink blanket was lying on the floor.
Her stuffed rabbit sat beside the pillow.
The IV line had been disconnected carefully.
No blood.
No struggle.
No broken equipment.
Whoever had taken her hadn't rushed.
They had walked into that room knowing exactly what they were doing.
I stopped breathing.
“Where is she?”
The nurse was crying.
“I don't know.”
“You were here.”
“I stepped away for less than a minute.”
“Who came in?”
“No one.”
“That isn't possible.”
She shook her head.
“I swear.”
Sarah moved past me.
“Lock the floor down.”
Two officers ran toward the elevators.
Another headed for the stairwell.
I stood beside Lily's empty bed.
Her rabbit was still there.
I picked it up.
Inside the rabbit's ear was a tiny red mark.
Three dots.
The same Atlas symbol.
My stomach dropped.
“They left this.”
Sarah looked at it.
“What is it?”
“A message.”
“For whom?”
I stared at the empty bed.
“For me.”
The hospital security footage showed Lily being taken at 2:19 a.m.
A nurse entered the room.
A second person followed.
Both wore hospital uniforms.
Their faces were covered by masks.
The nurse pushed a wheelchair.
Lily was asleep.
No struggle.
No screaming.
No alarm.
I watched the footage three times.
Then I noticed something.
“Stop.”
The technician paused.
“Go back.”
The image rewound.
“Right there.”
The nurse turned slightly.
Her hand touched the wheelchair.
Around her wrist was a bracelet.
A black cord.
With a silver pendant.
I knew it.
Anna used to wear the same pendant.
Sarah stared at the screen.
“That's not a hospital employee.”
“No.”
“Who is she?”
I whispered:
“Someone Anna trusted.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Rebecca.”
I turned.
“You think Rebecca took Lily?”
“No.”
“Then why does she have Anna's pendant?”
Michael's expression hardened.
“Because Rebecca was Anna's security officer.”
Sarah looked at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I thought she was dead.”
I stared.
“Everyone seems to have a dead person who isn't dead.”
Michael didn't answer.
Rebecca's body was found at 3:07 a.m.
Three blocks from the hospital.
Alive.
Barely.
She was lying behind a parked vehicle with a gunshot wound to her shoulder.
When the paramedics arrived, she was conscious.
Sarah questioned her before the ambulance left.
“Who shot you?”
Rebecca struggled to breathe.
“I don't know.”
“Who took Lily?”
Rebecca's eyes moved toward me.
“I tried to stop them.”
“Who?”
“The men.”
“How many?”
“Four.”
“Where did they take her?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Rebecca.”
“I don't know.”
I grabbed her hand.
“Please.”
She looked at me.
“I heard them talking.”
“What did they say?”
“They called her…”
Rebecca coughed.
“...the successor.”
My blood ran cold.
“What else?”
“They said the father was waiting.”
“Which father?”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Your father.”
The ambulance took Rebecca away.
Sarah stood beside me.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“Your father's alive.”
“I know.”
“And he just kidnapped Lily.”
“I know.”
“We need to know where he is.”
I looked at Michael.
He was staring at the hospital floor.
“Michael.”
He didn't respond.
“Michael.”
He finally looked up.
“There is one place.”
“Where?”
“My father's old estate.”
I frowned.
“The one that was supposedly demolished?”
“Yes.”
“Why would he go there?”
“Because that's where he kept the original archive.”
Sarah shook her head.
“We searched that property.”
“You searched the house.”
“What else is there?”
Michael looked at me.
“An underground railway.”
The old estate was forty minutes away.
We arrived before dawn.
The property was surrounded by fog.
No lights.
No guards.
No vehicles.
It looked abandoned.
Michael walked toward the back of the property.
He stopped beside an old well.
“This is the entrance.”
Sarah looked inside.
“That's a hundred-year-old well.”
Michael nodded.
“Exactly.”
He climbed down.
We followed.
Twenty feet below ground, he moved a loose stone.
A metal door opened.
Beyond it was a tunnel.
The walls were lined with old railway tracks.
I stared.
“This was here the whole time?”
Michael nodded.
“Your father built it.”
“For what?”
“Escape.”
“From Atlas?”
“From everyone.”
We followed the tracks.
After nearly a mile, we reached a steel door.
Michael entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside was a control room.
Old monitors.
Modern equipment.
A dozen screens.
And one large screen showing a live video.
Lily.
She was sitting in a chair.
Awake.
Alive.
My heart nearly stopped.
“Lily!”
I ran toward the screen.
She looked frightened.
A man stood behind her.
My father.
Older than the photograph.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
Alive.
I stared at him.
“Dad.”
He looked into the camera.
“You finally came.”
I stepped closer.
“Let her go.”
He smiled.
“You look like your mother.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Where is Lily?”
“She is safe.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“I rescued her.”
“She was in a hospital.”
“Which was compromised.”
“By you?”
“By Victor.”
I shook my head.
“You're working with him.”
My father laughed.
“No.”
“Then why does he want Lily?”
“Because he wants the same thing I do.”
“What?”
“The succession.”
I stared.
“You've been controlling everything.”
“No.”
“Then who has?”
He smiled.
“Your wife.”
I froze.
“Anna?”
“Yes.”
“That makes no sense.”
“She created the third account.”
“She hid the ledger.”
“She moved the money.”
“She manipulated Michael.”
“She faked her death.”
He paused.
“She's been controlling the entire game.”
I looked at Anna.
She had told me she was trying to protect us.
My father continued.
“And now she has made her final move.”
“What move?”
“She wants to transfer the Atlas succession to Lily.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily is the only person who can destroy everything.”
I stared at the screen.
“What does that mean?”
My father looked directly at me.
“It means Atlas was never a charity.”
I already knew.
But hearing it from him was different.
“It was built as a private power network.”
“For what?”
“Control.”
“Control of what?”
“Governments.”
“Markets.”
“Courts.”
“Banks.”
“Families.”
I felt sick.
“And Lily?”
“She's the legal successor.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas designed it that way.”
I stared.
“My father.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Not me.”
“Then who?”
“Thomas Vale.”
My heart stopped.
“You said Thomas was my biological father.”
“He isn't.”
I froze.
“What?”
My father looked at me.
“Thomas was your biological mother's husband.”
“Then who is my father?”
He smiled.
“You're looking at him.”
I couldn't breathe.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You said I was Thomas's son.”
“Anna believed that.”
“Why?”
“Because that's what I wanted her to believe.”
My stomach turned.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas was hiding Lily.”
I stared.
“You're Lily's biological father.”
My father nodded.
I felt the world collapse.
“Then what am I?”
He looked at me.
“Your biological father.”
I shook my head.
“That means…”
“Yes.”
I couldn't finish.
My father did.
“Lily is not your biological daughter.”
I looked at the screen.
My little girl.
The child I had raised.
The child I loved.
The child I had held when she was born.
My father continued:
“She's Thomas Vale's daughter.”
I turned toward Michael.
He looked away.
“You knew.”
Michael's voice was broken.
“I knew Anna believed it.”
“That's not what I asked.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lily wasn't mine.”
“Yes.”
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I whispered:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because blood isn't what makes a father.”
My father's voice came through the speakers.
“Isn't that what you always told yourself?”
I looked back at the screen.
“Give me Lily.”
“No.”
“You don't get to decide.”
“I already did.”
“You're my father.”
He smiled.
“And that is precisely why you should understand.”
Then Lily spoke.
“Daddy?”
I stepped closer.
“I'm here.”
She looked at me through the screen.
“Which daddy?”
My heart broke.
“What?”
She looked confused.
“The man here says he's my father.”
My father smiled.
“And you say you're my father.”
I looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart, listen to me.”
She nodded.
“You are my daughter.”
“But Grandma said you're not.”
My blood froze.
“Evelyn told you that?”
Lily nodded.
“Before she came to the hospital.”
My father laughed.
“Evelyn has always been careless.”
I stared at him.
“What did she tell Lily?”
“That her real family would come for her.”
I felt anger rise.
“No one is taking her.”
My father leaned toward the camera.
“Then bring me the third account.”
“I don't have it.”
“You do.”
“I don't.”
“Michael does.”
I turned.
Michael froze.
My father smiled.
“He has always carried the key.”
I looked at Michael.
“What key?”
Michael slowly reached inside his jacket.
He removed a small metal device.
My heart sank.
“You had it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Anna gave it to me.”
My father said:
“Give it to Daniel.”
Michael looked at me.
Then he handed it over.
The device was heavier than it looked.
A fingerprint scanner was embedded on one side.
I touched it.
The device lit up.
A message appeared.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
DANIEL HART.
I stared.
My father smiled.
“Now you understand.”
“Understand what?”
“The third account was never meant for Lily.”
He paused.
“It was meant for you.”
The device opened.
A digital folder appeared.
Inside were thousands of documents.
The first file was titled:
ORIGINAL SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
I opened it.
The agreement named the next controller of Atlas.
Not Lily.
Not Thomas.
Not Victor.
Me.
I stared.
“This is impossible.”
My father laughed.
“Your father built the empire for you.”
“You're my father.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I needed you to become someone Atlas could never control.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“You had to believe you were ordinary.”
I shook my head.
“You destroyed my childhood.”
“I saved it.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You killed my mother.”
His expression changed.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He looked toward the camera.
“Anna.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
“Your mother died because Anna killed her.”
I couldn't speak.
My father continued.
“She discovered Anna's secret.”
“What secret?”
“That Lily was never supposed to exist.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas was supposed to die.”
My mind raced.
“Anna killed Thomas?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
My father smiled.
“Victor.”
I looked at Michael.
He whispered:
“It's true.”
I felt trapped inside a maze of lies.
Everyone had killed someone.
Everyone had lied.
Everyone had protected someone.
And somehow, Lily was at the center of all of it.
Then the screen changed.
A second camera appeared.
It showed another room.
Anna.
She was sitting alone.
Alive.
Tears streamed down her face.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel…”
My heart stopped.
“I know you're watching.”
I stepped closer.
“I never wanted you to learn this way.”
My father turned away from the screen.
Anna continued.
“I need you to understand something.”
She took a breath.
“Lily is not your biological daughter.”
I closed my eyes.
“But she is yours.”
I looked at her.
“She was born to me.”
She cried.
“But you were the father who raised her.”
I swallowed.
Anna continued.
“Blood gave her a family.”
“You gave her a home.”
“And if you remember nothing else…”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Remember that I chose you.”
The screen went black.
I couldn't breathe.
Then another message appeared.
TRANSFER PROTOCOL READY.
SUCCESSOR: DANIEL HART.
My father stepped toward Lily.
“Choose.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Take control of Atlas.”
“Or lose Lily.”
I stared at my daughter.
Then at the succession agreement.
Then at Michael.
Sarah whispered:
“Don't do it.”
I looked at her.
“If I don't…”
“You don't know what he will do.”
I knew.
My father had already shown me.
I picked up the device.
“I'll do it.”
Michael's eyes widened.
“Daniel!”
I looked at the screen.
“I accept the succession.”
My father smiled.
Then the room shook.
An alarm sounded.
Sarah drew her weapon.
“What happened?”
My father looked toward the ceiling.
His smile vanished.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
The doors exploded open.
Men in black tactical gear stormed into the control room.
Gunfire erupted.
Michael tackled me to the floor.
Sarah fired back.
The screen showing Lily shattered.
I screamed.
“LILY!”
Then the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
And in the chaos, I heard one voice.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
Right beside me.
“Daniel.”
I turned.
Anna was standing there.
Alive.
She grabbed my hand.
“We have to go.”
“Where's Lily?”
“Victor took her.”
“What?”
Anna pulled me toward the tunnel.
“Your father was never holding her.”
I stopped.
“Then who was?”
Anna looked at me.
Her face was full of terror.
“Evelyn.”
My blood froze.
“Evelyn?”
Anna nodded.
“And she has already taken Lily to the only place where none of us can reach her.”
“Where?”
Anna whispered:
“The Atlas Court.”
Then she looked behind us.
A gunshot echoed through the tunnel.
Anna grabbed my arm.
“Run.”
I ran.
Because the night Lily disappeared had only just begun.
And somewhere in the darkness, Evelyn was carrying my daughter toward a secret court that had existed beneath the city for generations.
A court where money could buy judges.
Where blood could decide ownership.
And where the person who controlled Lily could legally control an empire.
But there was one thing Evelyn didn't know.
I wasn't running anymore.
I was coming for my daughter.
And for the first time in my life...
May you like
I knew exactly who I was fighting.
To be continued...
