Chapter 12 — The Courtroom Trap

Chapter 12 — The Courtroom Trap
The alarms were still screaming when the first bullet struck the window.
Glass exploded across the living room.
“Down!”
Sarah shoved me to the floor.
Michael pulled Lily behind the kitchen counter while Anna crouched beside me.
Another shot.
Then another.
The security lights outside flickered.
Through the shattered window, I saw the black limousine still sitting at the gate.
Arthur Vale hadn't moved.
He was simply watching.
Waiting.
“Who are those people?” I asked.
Sarah looked through the curtains.
“Professional security.”
“How many?”
“Too many.”
Michael checked the back entrance.
“They're surrounding the property.”
Anna grabbed my arm.
“This isn't an attack.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“It's a message.”
Another bullet struck the wall.
Anna didn't flinch.
“Arthur doesn't need to break in.”
“Then what does he want?”
“He wants us to run.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because he wants us somewhere else.”
Sarah immediately understood.
“The Court.”
Anna nodded.
“The Atlas Court.”
I looked at Lily.
“No.”
Anna's voice became urgent.
“Daniel, listen to me. If Arthur wanted Lily dead, she'd already be dead.”
“Then what?”
“He wants her presented before the Court.”
“Why?”
“To force the succession.”
My stomach tightened.
“You said the Court was sealed.”
“It was.”
“Then how can he use it?”
Anna looked toward the gate.
“Arthur created it.”
The attack stopped as suddenly as it had begun.
Silence returned.
Sarah looked outside.
“They're leaving.”
I stood slowly.
The limousine remained.
Arthur was still there.
Then he stepped out.
He raised one hand.
A man approached the gate and placed an envelope on the ground.
Then the convoy disappeared into the darkness.
Sarah sent an officer to retrieve it.
The envelope contained one sheet of paper.
A court summons.
I read the first line.
THE ATLAS SUCCESSION TRIBUNAL
Then:
Respondent: Daniel Hart
Subject: Emergency determination of guardianship and succession
Witness: Lily Hart
Hearing: 10:00 a.m.
Tomorrow.
At the bottom was a signature.
Arthur Vale.
I looked at Sarah.
“This isn't a legal court.”
She shook her head.
“Not under normal law.”
“Then we don't go.”
Anna stepped closer.
“If we don't appear, they'll issue a default judgment.”
“Can they do that?”
“They can inside Atlas.”
“And what happens?”
Anna looked at Lily.
“Lily becomes their ward.”
My blood ran cold.
“Meaning?”
“Arthur controls her.”
“No.”
“And through her, he controls the succession.”
I tore the paper in half.
Anna caught my wrist.
“Daniel.”
“No.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“They're using a child to take an empire.”
Anna looked at me.
“They're using a child to take something much more dangerous than an empire.”
We spent the rest of the night preparing.
Sarah contacted federal authorities.
The answer was disappointing.
The Atlas Court was not recognized as a government institution.
But it had existed for decades.
Its decisions had been voluntarily enforced by banks, corporations, and private trustees.
It was a shadow system.
A private world operating beside the law.
Sarah looked at the summons.
“We can arrest Arthur.”
“Then why haven't we?”
“Because he hasn't technically committed a crime by issuing this.”
I laughed bitterly.
“He kidnapped Lily's legal guardian.”
“That's what we're trying to prove.”
“And the Court?”
“We can challenge it.”
Anna shook her head.
“Not from outside.”
Sarah looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“The Court recognizes only one authority.”
“Which is?”
“The current successor.”
Sarah looked at me.
I understood.
“Me.”
Anna nodded.
“If you enter that courtroom as provisional successor, the Court has to hear you.”
“And if I don't?”
“Arthur can declare you unfit.”
“On what grounds?”
“Your alleged instability.”
I remembered Evelyn's accusations.
My father's old reports.
The custody petition.
The fake evidence.
All of it.
Sarah's face tightened.
“They've been building a case against you for years.”
Anna nodded.
“Exactly.”
At 8:30 the next morning, we left.
Lily was between Michael and me in the back seat.
Anna sat opposite us.
She hadn't spoken much.
Neither had I.
Finally Lily broke the silence.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are we going to court?”
“Yes.”
“Am I in trouble?”
My heart broke.
“No.”
“Then why are all the adults scared?”
I looked at her.
“Because some adults make very bad choices.”
She thought about that.
“Like Grandma?”
I hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Is Grandma going to hurt me?”
“No.”
I wasn't certain.
But I needed her to believe it.
Lily leaned against my shoulder.
“I want to go home.”
I kissed her forehead.
“So do I.”
Anna watched us.
There was something in her expression.
Pain.
Love.
Regret.
Maybe all three.
She whispered:
“I never wanted this for her.”
I looked at her.
“Then help me end it.”
She nodded.
“I will.”
The Atlas Court was hidden beneath an old courthouse.
The building above had been abandoned for twenty years.
The basement, however, was immaculate.
Marble floors.
Dark wood.
Gold lettering.
At the end of the corridor stood two massive doors.
Carved into them was the Atlas symbol.
The doors opened.
Inside, more than fifty people were seated.
Lawyers.
Bankers.
Trustees.
Executives.
Several judges.
Some of them were names I recognized from television.
Others were people whose companies appeared on the business pages every morning.
At the center was a raised platform.
Arthur Vale sat there.
He looked older in person.
Late seventies, perhaps.
But his eyes were sharp.
He smiled when he saw me.
“Daniel.”
I didn't respond.
He looked at Lily.
“And there is my granddaughter.”
Lily stepped closer to me.
Arthur's smile disappeared.
“She's afraid.”
“She should be.”
Arthur laughed softly.
“You have your mother's temper.”
I looked at him.
“Which mother?”
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Anna stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Arthur stared at her.
“You survived.”
“Yes.”
“I was told you died.”
“I wanted you to believe that.”
“You've caused a great deal of trouble.”
Anna smiled.
“Not nearly enough.”
Arthur turned to the judges.
“Begin.”
A man in a black robe stood.
“Daniel Hart, you are appearing before the Atlas Succession Tribunal.”
I interrupted.
“I don't recognize this tribunal.”
“You don't have to.”
“Then why am I here?”
“Because you accepted the succession.”
I looked at Arthur.
“So this is a trap.”
Arthur smiled.
The judge continued.
“The Court has received evidence suggesting you are unfit to serve as provisional successor.”
I laughed.
“Of course.”
The first document appeared on the screen.
My psychiatric evaluation.
I stared.
“I've never seen this.”
The judge continued.
“Evidence of emotional instability.”
A second document.
“History of violent behavior.”
A third.
“Neglect of a dependent child.”
I looked at Arthur.
“You forged these.”
He didn't react.
Then a fourth document appeared.
A photograph of Lily in the hospital.
The judge said:
“Evidence of parental negligence resulting in hospitalization.”
My hands tightened.
“They caused the hospitalization.”
“That remains disputed.”
I looked around.
“This entire proceeding is based on lies.”
The judge smiled.
“That is why we have witnesses.”
The doors opened.
Evelyn walked in.
Handcuffs were gone.
She was wearing a dark suit.
I stared.
“How?”
Arthur answered.
“She was granted temporary immunity.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“She is under federal investigation.”
Arthur smiled.
“Not here.”
Evelyn sat down.
Then she looked at Lily.
“You should have listened to me.”
Lily moved behind me.
I stepped between them.
“You're not going near her.”
The judge raised his hand.
“Mr. Hart, control yourself.”
I looked around.
This was exactly what they wanted.
Anger.
Fear.
A reaction they could use against me.
I took a breath.
“I am calm.”
The judge nodded.
“Then let us proceed.”
Evelyn was the first witness.
She walked to the stand.
“Do you believe Daniel Hart is fit to raise Lily?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He is emotionally unstable.”
“Examples?”
“He became obsessed with his late wife's death.”
I clenched my jaw.
“He neglected Lily.”
False.
“He allowed dangerous people into her life.”
False.
“He has repeatedly endangered her.”
Also false.
The judge looked at me.
“Questions?”
I stood.
“Yes.”
I approached Evelyn.
“Did you know Lily had a severe peanut allergy?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she carried emergency medication?”
“Yes.”
“Did you remove one of those injectors?”
“No.”
I smiled.
“Did you?”
“No.”
I turned toward the screen.
Sarah activated the recording from the luncheon.
Evelyn's voice filled the courtroom.
“Move that plate.”
Then:
“Take the injector.”
Evelyn's face went white.
The room erupted.
The judge slammed his gavel.
“Silence!”
I looked at Evelyn.
“You just lied under oath.”
She stared at me.
“I was confused.”
“You were recorded.”
“The recording could be manipulated.”
Sarah stood.
“We have the original device.”
The judge looked irritated.
“Continue.”
I returned to my seat.
Evelyn's testimony had collapsed.
But she smiled.
That worried me.
Because people who lose everything usually don't smile.
Unless they have another weapon.
The second witness entered.
Michael.
I stared at him.
He sat down.
The judge asked:
“Do you believe your brother is fit to care for Lily?”
Michael looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then he said:
“No.”
My heart dropped.
“What?”
Michael continued.
“He has hidden important information from the Court.”
The judge nodded.
“Explain.”
Michael took a breath.
“Daniel knew Lily was not his biological daughter.”
I froze.
“That is not true.”
Michael looked at me.
“I told him.”
“When?”
“Before the Court hearing.”
I stared.
“You never told me that.”
Michael continued.
“He knew she was Thomas Vale's daughter.”
The courtroom erupted.
Arthur smiled.
Evelyn smiled.
I looked at Michael.
He had betrayed me.
Again.
The judge raised his hand.
“Mr. Hart, remain seated.”
Michael looked down.
Then said:
“Daniel also knew Anna was alive.”
I felt sick.
The judge looked at me.
“Is this true?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you conceal it?”
“To protect Lily.”
The judge nodded.
“Or to deceive the Court?”
I said nothing.
The judge continued.
“Mr. Michael Hart, do you believe your brother should retain custody?”
Michael hesitated.
Then:
“No.”
I felt something break inside me.
Michael stepped away.
As he passed, he whispered:
“Trust me.”
I stared after him.
Trust him?
After everything?
I didn't know whether I could.
The third witness was Anna.
The room became silent.
She walked slowly to the stand.
Arthur watched her.
The judge asked:
“State your name.”
“Anna Hart.”
“Is that your legal name?”
She hesitated.
“No.”
Arthur smiled.
The judge continued.
“What is your real name?”
Anna looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Anna Vale.”
Gasps filled the room.
I had known she was a Vale.
But hearing her say it publicly was different.
The judge asked:
“Are you Lily's biological mother?”
“No.”
“Did you deceive Daniel Hart?”
“Yes.”
“Did you manipulate him into marriage?”
Anna looked at me.
“Yes.”
The room erupted.
I felt humiliated.
Angry.
Betrayed.
But Anna continued.
“I married Daniel to protect Lily.”
The judge interrupted.
“Answer the question.”
“I used him initially.”
“And afterward?”
“I loved him.”
The judge looked at me.
“Mr. Hart, do you wish to question this witness?”
I stood.
Anna looked terrified.
I approached her.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I asked:
“Did you ever love me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever regret marrying me?”
“Every day.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Because I knew what my secrets would eventually do to you.”
I nodded.
“Did you know Lily wasn't my biological daughter when she was born?”
“Yes.”
“Did you plan to tell me?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After the danger passed.”
“Did it ever pass?”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“Did you ever intend to stay with me?”
She began crying.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Forever.”
I stepped back.
The judge watched me.
“Anything else?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Anna returned to her seat.
As she passed me, she whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
I didn't answer.
The judge stood.
“The Court has heard sufficient evidence.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
He paused.
“What?”
“You haven't heard everything.”
I pulled out the recording device.
The room changed immediately.
Arthur stood.
“Don't.”
I looked at him.
“You're afraid of this.”
He said nothing.
I connected the device to the courtroom system.
The screen turned black.
Then my father's voice played.
“I built Atlas.”
Arthur's face hardened.
The recording continued.
“I ordered Elizabeth Vale's death.”
People began whispering.
Then:
“Daniel is mine.”
I looked at Arthur.
He was pale.
The recording continued.
“If necessary, I will eliminate my own son.”
Silence.
Then another voice.
Arthur's.
Younger.
Clear.
“You can't control him forever.”
My father's voice answered:
“I don't need to.”
Arthur's voice:
“Then what happens when Lily turns eighteen?”
My father's voice:
“She won't.”
The courtroom erupted.
Lily covered her ears.
I pulled her into my arms.
The recording continued.
“We make sure she never reaches eighteen.”
Arthur stood.
“Turn it off!”
I looked at him.
“You were part of this.”
He shouted:
“I was trying to stop him!”
The recording played his next words.
“Then we'll use Daniel.”
My blood froze.
“He'll become the provisional successor.”
“And when Lily disappears, the succession returns to us.”
The room went silent.
I looked at Arthur.
“You planned this.”
He shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“You planned to use me.”
“Yes.”
“To control Lily.”
“Yes.”
“And then kill her before she turned eighteen.”
Arthur's face collapsed.
“No.”
The recording continued.
A woman's voice appeared.
Evelyn.
“And Daniel?”
My father's voice answered:
“He'll be blamed.”
I felt sick.
They had planned everything.
The luncheon.
The custody case.
The missing injector.
The hospital.
The Court.
All of it.
They wanted me blamed for Lily's death.
Then Atlas would pass to them.
The perfect crime.
Sarah burst through the courtroom doors.
“Everyone stay where you are!”
Federal agents followed her.
Arthur looked furious.
“You can't interfere.”
Sarah held up a warrant.
“We can now.”
She looked at the screen.
“That's the evidence we needed.”
Arthur stepped backward.
“You don't understand what you're doing.”
Sarah smiled.
“Actually, I do.”
She turned to the agents.
“Arrest him.”
Two officers moved toward Arthur.
He didn't resist.
He simply looked at me.
“You think you've won.”
I stared at him.
“I haven't.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
Then he looked at Lily.
“You should ask your wife what happened the night Elizabeth died.”
Anna's face turned white.
I looked at her.
“What happened?”
She didn't answer.
Arthur laughed as the agents dragged him away.
“Ask her.”
The doors slammed shut.
I turned toward Anna.
“Tell me.”
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
Her voice was barely audible.
“I killed Elizabeth.”
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
“You?”
Anna nodded.
“But…”
She began crying.
“I didn't mean to.”
I stared.
“What did you do?”
Anna looked at me.
“I was the one driving the car.”
My heart stopped.
“What car?”
“The night Elizabeth died.”
She swallowed.
“Your father was chasing us.”
“We crashed.”
“Elizabeth was dying.”
“She gave me Lily.”
“I promised to protect her.”
“And then…”
Anna closed her eyes.
“I left her.”
I stared at her.
“You left her to die?”
“I thought she was dead.”
“But she wasn't.”
“No.”
Anna's voice broke.
“She survived.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
“She survived the crash.”
“Then where is she?”
Anna looked toward the courtroom doors.
Her expression changed.
“That's the problem.”
“What?”
“She wasn't killed by the crash.”
“Then who killed her?”
Anna whispered:
“Your father.”
I froze.
Then the courtroom lights went out.
Again.
A scream came from the hallway.
A gunshot.
Then another.
The lights returned.
Anna was gone.
Lily was gone.
Michael was standing over an unconscious federal agent.
And the courtroom doors were locked from the outside.
I stared at the empty chair where my daughter had been.
“Lily?”
No answer.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You should have listened to Arthur.”
My blood froze.
“Where is my daughter?”
A photograph arrived on my phone.
Lily.
Inside a moving vehicle.
Tears on her face.
Beside her sat a woman.
I stared at the photograph.
I knew that woman.
Everyone believed she was dead.
Anna had spent years pretending she was dead.
My father had claimed she was dead.
But there she was.
Alive.
Lily's biological mother.
Elizabeth Vale.
The voice on the phone whispered:
“Now you finally know the truth.”
The call ended.
I looked at Anna's empty chair.
Then at Michael.
He lowered his head.
“You were right not to trust me.”
I stared at him.
“What did you do?”
He whispered:
“I helped Elizabeth take Lily.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why?”
Michael looked at me.
“Because Anna was never the one protecting Lily.”
“Then who was?”
Michael pointed toward the courtroom doors.
“Elizabeth.”
The doors opened.
A man stood outside.
Thomas Vale.
Alive.
He looked at me.
And said:
“Daniel, if you want your daughter back…”
He raised a small black recorder.
May you like
“…you'll have to hear the last recording first.”
To be continued...
