Chapter 6 — Anna’s Hidden Letter

Chapter 6 — Anna’s Hidden Letter
I didn't sleep that night.
I couldn't.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same photograph.
Anna.
Alive.
Standing beside Michael.
Holding a secret I had spent two years believing had died with her.
And beneath the photograph, those words kept repeating in my head.
ASK MICHAEL WHAT HE DID THE NIGHT ANNA DISAPPEARED.
Not died.
Disappeared.
That single word changed everything.
At 3:17 a.m., I was still sitting beside Lily's hospital bed when she suddenly spoke.
“Daddy?”
I looked up.
“I'm here.”
She was half asleep.
“Mommy said you shouldn't be angry with Uncle Michael.”
My chest tightened.
“Did she?”
Lily nodded.
“She said he was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
Lily closed her eyes.
“Of the man who came to our house.”
“What man?”
She didn't answer.
She was already asleep again.
I looked toward Detective Sarah Collins.
She was standing beside the window.
“You heard that?”
“Yes.”
“What do you think?”
“I think your daughter remembers more than anyone realized.”
I looked at Lily.
“And I think Anna knew that.”
Sarah came closer.
“Daniel, we need to find Michael.”
“I know.”
“Before Evelyn's people do.”
I stood.
“Then let's find him.”
We found Michael at 5:42 a.m.
Not at a hospital.
Not at his apartment.
Not at any of the places we expected.
He was sitting inside a small chapel three miles from the city center.
Alone.
His hands were clasped.
His head was lowered.
When he saw us, he didn't run.
He simply said:
“You found me.”
Sarah kept her weapon holstered.
“Are you going to make this difficult?”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“Good.”
He looked at me.
“I owe you the truth.”
I stepped forward.
“You owe Lily the truth.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“What happened the night Anna disappeared?”
Michael's face changed.
He looked toward the altar.
“She didn't die.”
“I know.”
“She asked me to help her disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor found her.”
My fists tightened.
“What did he want?”
“The ledger.”
“And Lily?”
“Protection.”
I stared at him.
“You've been lying to me for two years.”
“Yes.”
“You lived in my house.”
“Yes.”
“You watched Lily grow up.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Anna was alive.”
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
I wanted to hit him.
Instead, I whispered:
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
“You talked to her.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“You met her.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“An abandoned church outside the city.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because she made me promise.”
“What did she say?”
Michael looked at me.
“She said if you found her before she was ready, Lily would die.”
I went silent.
Michael continued.
“Victor doesn't want to kill Lily.”
“Then what does he want?”
“He wants to use her.”
“For what?”
Michael shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“You always say that.”
“Because I was never told everything.”
“Then what do you know?”
Michael looked toward Sarah.
“Enough to know Anna was right to disappear.”
Sarah pulled out the photograph.
“This was found at the hospital.”
Michael stared at it.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone left it.”
He picked it up.
“That was the night Anna disappeared.”
I stepped forward.
“You were holding Lily.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Anna asked me to take her.”
“Where?”
“Out of the house.”
“Why?”
“Victor's men were coming.”
I stared.
“How did you know?”
“Anna called me.”
“What time?”
“11:48 p.m.”
I remembered that night.
The storm.
The power outage.
The ambulance.
The phone call telling me Anna had collapsed.
I had been at the office.
When I arrived at the hospital, she was already gone.
I had believed she died there.
Michael shook his head.
“She never went to the hospital.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She left through the rear entrance.”
“Who was in the hospital?”
“A woman.”
“A substitute?”
Michael nodded.
“She was wearing Anna's clothes.”
My stomach turned.
“Who was she?”
“I don't know.”
Sarah asked:
“Was she alive?”
Michael looked down.
“No.”
Silence.
I understood.
Anna had staged her death.
Someone else had died in her place.
I felt sick.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because Anna believed you were being watched.”
“By whom?”
“Everyone.”
Michael took something from his jacket.
A small black notebook.
He handed it to me.
“Anna wanted you to have this.”
I opened it.
The first page contained one sentence.
Daniel, if Michael gives you this, then I'm either dead or you finally know enough to survive the truth.
My hands trembled.
Sarah stood beside me.
“Keep going.”
I turned the page.
I need you to understand why I left.
The next page.
I didn't leave because I stopped loving you.
Another.
I left because loving you became dangerous.
I swallowed.
Another page.
Victor knows about Lily.
Another.
He knows about the money.
Another.
And he knows about you.
I turned the page.
The writing became darker.
Your father lied to you.
I stopped.
Michael looked away.
I continued.
He told you he built the Hart family fortune through legitimate business.
He didn't.
He built it through Atlas.
And when he tried to leave, they came after him.
My heart pounded.
Then:
Victor wasn't the only one.
I looked at Sarah.
“What does that mean?”
She shook her head.
I did.
There are three people who know where the original ledger is.
Victor.
Evelyn.
And me.
I froze.
Then another sentence.
Michael knows where I hid the key.
I looked at my brother.
He nodded.
“She told me.”
“Where?”
“I can't say.”
“Why?”
“Because she made me promise.”
I turned another page.
Then stopped.
There was a small drawing.
A lighthouse.
Underneath it was written:
WHERE THE SEA MEETS THE STONE.
I looked at Michael.
“What is this?”
“The place where Anna hid the ledger.”
“You know?”
“Yes.”
“Then take me there.”
Michael shook his head.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Anna told me only you could open it.”
“Open what?”
“The door.”
Sarah took the notebook.
She examined the lighthouse drawing.
“Do you recognize it?”
Michael nodded.
“Everyone in this city does.”
He turned the page.
A photograph had been attached.
A lighthouse stood on a cliff overlooking the ocean.
I recognized it immediately.
“The old Blackstone Lighthouse.”
Michael nodded.
“Anna used to take Lily there.”
I remembered.
Summer evenings.
Lily chasing seagulls.
Anna laughing.
I had thought those were ordinary family memories.
Apparently they weren't.
We drove to Blackstone before sunrise.
The ocean was dark.
The lighthouse stood above the cliffs like a silent monument.
Sarah stayed with me.
Michael followed.
When we reached the entrance, I saw something carved into the stone.
A small symbol.
The same symbol that had appeared on the trust documents.
A circle surrounding a line.
Michael touched it.
“That's Atlas.”
I looked at him.
“You said the foundation was secret.”
“It is.”
“Then why is its symbol here?”
“Because your father built this place.”
I stared at the lighthouse.
My father.
Always my father.
Every answer led back to him.
We entered.
The lighthouse had been abandoned for years.
Dust covered the stairs.
The wind screamed through broken windows.
At the top, we found nothing.
Michael looked disappointed.
“It should be here.”
“What should?”
“The door.”
Sarah looked around.
“Maybe there's another entrance.”
I remembered Anna's words.
Where the sea meets the stone.
I looked toward the cliff.
The lighthouse stood directly above a cave.
“Down there.”
We followed the narrow path.
At the bottom was a stone wall.
Nothing else.
I searched the rocks.
Then my hand touched something.
A small metal plate.
I pressed it.
A section of the wall moved.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Sarah drew her weapon.
We entered.
The tunnel ended at a steel door.
There was no handle.
Only a small keyhole.
Michael looked at me.
“The key.”
I remembered the photograph.
The silver key.
But we didn't have it.
Then I remembered Lily.
The little box.
The silver object.
I had left it in the hospital safe.
I looked at Sarah.
“We need to go back.”
“No.”
Michael reached into his pocket.
He pulled out the silver key.
I stared.
“You had it.”
“I was protecting it.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
He handed it to me.
I inserted it into the lock.
Nothing happened.
I turned it.
Still nothing.
Michael shook his head.
“Anna said it only opens for you.”
“How?”
I tried again.
Nothing.
Then I remembered the trust document.
My father's signature.
The old family seal.
I took out my wallet.
Inside was a small metal card Anna had given me years ago.
I'd never known why she wanted me to keep it.
I pressed it against the keyhole.
The mechanism clicked.
The steel door opened.
Inside was a small room.
At the center sat a black metal box.
My heart pounded.
I opened it.
Inside was a thick leather-bound ledger.
The original Atlas ledger.
But there was something else.
A letter.
My name was written across the envelope.
Daniel.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
The first line nearly broke me.
My love, if you're reading this, I'm sorry.
I sat down.
Sarah remained silent.
I read.
I didn't die.
My eyes filled with tears.
I disappeared because Victor discovered that Lily carried the only thing he could never steal.
I turned the page.
Her blood.
I frowned.
What did that mean?
Then:
Lily is not simply the heir to the Hart family.
I kept reading.
She is the legal beneficiary of the original Atlas trust.
My heart stopped.
And whoever controls her has legal authority over everything your father hid.
The three million dollars.
The foundation.
The companies.
Everything.
I turned the page.
That's why Evelyn wants custody.
Another.
That's why Victor wants Lily.
Another.
And that's why Michael had to betray you.
I looked at my brother.
He looked down.
I continued.
But there is one thing I never told anyone.
My heart pounded.
Not even Michael.
The next page was torn.
I turned another.
Nothing.
Another.
Nothing.
Then the final page.
Only one sentence.
Daniel, the man you believe is your father isn't your biological father.
I stopped breathing.
Sarah stared at me.
Michael closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
“You knew.”
He didn't answer.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Who is my father?”
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Then who does?”
Michael looked at the ledger.
“Anna.”
I stared at the letter.
Then something fell from inside the envelope.
A second photograph.
I picked it up.
It showed Anna.
Standing beside a man.
Not my father.
Not Victor.
Someone else.
The man's face was familiar.
I had seen him before.
In the hospital.
In the photographs.
In the background of my childhood.
I whispered his name.
“Thomas.”
Michael nodded.
“Thomas Vale.”
“Who is he?”
Michael looked at me.
“The founder of Atlas.”
I stared at the photograph.
Thomas was smiling.
And standing beside him was my mother.
My biological mother.
The woman I had been told died when I was born.
My knees went weak.
Michael caught my arm.
“Daniel…”
I pulled away.
“You knew my mother was alive?”
“No.”
“Then why is she in this photograph?”
Michael shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Sarah picked up the ledger.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
She looked toward the entrance.
“Because someone followed us.”
A sound echoed through the tunnel.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was coming.
Michael reached for his weapon.
Sarah raised hers.
I held the letter tightly.
Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.
“Daniel.”
I knew that voice.
Victor.
He stepped into the light.
Older than the photographs.
Gray-haired.
Wearing glasses.
Calm.
Almost amused.
Behind him stood Evelyn.
And beside her...
Rebecca.
My heart dropped.
Rebecca looked terrified.
Victor smiled.
“You finally found the ledger.”
Sarah aimed her weapon.
“Don't move.”
Victor laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
He looked at me.
“The ledger isn't the secret.”
He pointed toward the letter in my hand.
“That is.”
I tightened my grip.
“What do you want?”
Victor smiled.
“I want you to finish reading it.”
I looked down.
There was one final folded page hidden inside the envelope.
I opened it.
Anna's handwriting appeared.
Only six words.
Daniel, Lily is not your daughter.
Everything stopped.
The ocean.
The wind.
My heartbeat.
Everything.
I looked at Victor.
He smiled.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, I understood why everyone had been willing to kill for the truth.
Because the truth wasn't about money.
It wasn't about Atlas.
It wasn't even about Anna.
It was about Lily.
And if Anna was telling the truth...
Then the little girl sleeping safely in that hospital bed was connected to a secret that could destroy every person who had tried to control her.
May you like
Including me.
To be continued...
