Chapter 10

The Hunter Returns

The courtroom erupted into chaos.

Reporters rushed toward the exits, desperate to be the first to break the story.

Federal marshals surrounded the witness stand, forming a protective circle around Caroline Bennett.

Judge Eleanor Whitmore struck her gavel repeatedly.

"Order!"

"Order in this court!"

But the damage had already been done.

One name had changed everything.

Victoria Ashcroft.

A celebrated philanthropist.

A trusted presidential adviser.

A woman whose photograph had appeared on the covers of magazines around the world.

And now, according to sworn testimony, the mysterious recruiter known as Madame.

Within minutes, the Department of Justice issued a sealed arrest warrant.

A tactical arrest team was dispatched to Victoria's Washington residence.

Another team headed for her private office.

A third surrounded her country estate.

But every location produced the same result.

Empty.

No Victoria.

No staff.

No records.

The security cameras had been remotely erased only thirty minutes before Caroline entered the courtroom.

Someone had warned her.

Again.

Back at FBI Headquarters, Director Samuel Hayes addressed a room full of senior agents.

"The leak is still active."

His voice was sharp.

"Until we identify the mole, assume every classified operation is compromised."

No one argued.

After the failed arrest, everyone understood the truth.

The Syndicate still had eyes inside the government.

Evelyn sat quietly in the conference room beside Daniel Brooks.

She had barely slept since the trial began.

Lily was safe in a federal protection program under the care of Evelyn's older sister, Rachel.

It was the first time in months Evelyn had been willing to leave her daughter.

Only because she trusted the security around her.

Daniel placed a folder in front of her.

"You know why you're here."

She looked at the cover.

SPECIAL OPERATIONS DIVISION

Director Hayes entered moments later.

He dismissed everyone except Evelyn and Daniel.

Then he sat across from them.

"I owe you both an apology."

Neither responded.

"I should have listened sooner."

Daniel folded his arms.

"You trusted the wrong people."

Hayes nodded.

"I did."

"And people paid for it."

The Director slid a new badge across the table.

It bore a black stripe instead of the traditional blue.

Evelyn frowned.

"What is this?"

"A temporary assignment."

"To where?"

Hayes met her eyes.

"You'll report directly to me."

"No regional supervisors."

"No outside oversight."

"No digital records."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"A ghost unit."

Hayes nodded.

"Officially..."

"It doesn't exist."

Evelyn stared at the badge.

"You want me back."

"I need you back."

She remained silent.

"I resigned."

Hayes nodded.

"I never processed the paperwork."

For the first time in days, Evelyn almost smiled.

"You were expecting this."

"I was hoping."

She looked out the conference room window.

Beyond the glass, agents hurried through the corridors carrying files and evidence.

Somewhere out there...

Victoria Ashcroft was disappearing.

Every hour that passed made her harder to find.

Evelyn finally looked back at the Director.

"One condition."

"Name it."

"My daughter comes first."

Hayes answered immediately.

"Always."

She extended her hand.

"I'm in."

Forty-eight hours later...

A secure operations center deep beneath FBI Headquarters came alive.

Only six people had access.

Director Hayes.

Daniel Brooks.

Evelyn Hart.

Cyber analyst Mia Chen.

Former Deputy Director Thomas Mercer.

And retired Interpol investigator Luca Moretti.

A wall-sized digital map displayed dozens of flashing markers across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Mercer stepped forward.

"We've tracked Victoria's financial network."

He highlighted several cities.

"London."

"Zurich."

"Dubai."

"Buenos Aires."

"Singapore."

Daniel frowned.

"She can't be everywhere."

Mercer nodded.

"She doesn't have to be."

"Her money is."

Mia Chen projected another file.

"The shell companies connected to Victoria control nearly twelve billion dollars in assets."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Twelve?"

"Conservative estimate."

Evelyn slowly understood.

"This isn't just a criminal organization."

Mercer nodded.

"It's an economic empire."

Luca Moretti zoomed in on a series of encrypted transactions.

"These transfers all occurred after the trial."

"What do they have in common?" Evelyn asked.

"They're funding extraction teams."

"Extraction?"

"They're pulling important members out before governments can arrest them."

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

"The Syndicate is running."

She shook her head.

"No."

"They're regrouping."

Mia suddenly looked up from her computer.

"I found something."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

"A secure satellite phone activated for exactly eighteen seconds."

"Location?"

"Reykjavik."

Mercer frowned.

"Iceland?"

Mia nodded.

"The signal matches Victoria Ashcroft's emergency device."

Daniel stood.

"We have her."

Mia hesitated.

"Not exactly."

"What do you mean?"

"The phone disconnected before we could triangulate the exact location."

She enlarged the map.

"But..."

"It connected to another device."

"Whose?"

She pressed Enter.

A personnel file appeared.

Every face in the room hardened.

The owner of the second phone was...

Special Agent Marcus Cole.

"He survived."

Daniel whispered.

Evelyn wasn't surprised.

"He's never been working alone."

Mercer nodded.

"Marcus isn't the leader."

"He's the hunter."

"The man Victoria sends whenever someone becomes dangerous."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"Which means..."

Mercer finished the sentence.

"He's coming for us."

At that moment, an alarm echoed through the operations center.

Mia's monitors filled with red warnings.

"Unauthorized access!"

"Where?"

"Our internal servers!"

She typed furiously.

"They're trying to erase evidence."

Daniel immediately disconnected the central network.

Too late.

Half the screens suddenly went black.

Files vanished one after another.

Case reports.

Financial records.

Witness statements.

Entire investigations disappeared in seconds.

Mia's voice trembled.

"They're inside."

"Can you stop them?"

"I'm trying!"

Then...

One monitor remained active.

Its screen turned white.

Black letters slowly appeared.

WELCOME BACK, AGENT HART.

The room fell silent.

Another line appeared.

WE MISSED YOU.

Evelyn stared without blinking.

Then a final sentence appeared.

THIS TIME...

YOU ARE THE TARGET.

The screen went dark.

Every system shut down.

Emergency generators activated.

Silence filled the underground operations center.

Daniel slowly looked at Evelyn.

"They know where we are."

Evelyn picked up her new badge.

Clipped it onto her jacket.

And loaded her service pistol.

"For months..."

"They hunted my family."

She looked at every member of the team.

"No more."

"This time..."

"We hunt them."

Far away, in an unknown location, Victoria Ashcroft watched the same message disappear from her private monitor.

She smiled calmly.

Then turned toward the man standing beside her.

Marcus Cole.

"It's begun," she said.

Marcus nodded once.

"The hunter has returned."

Victoria's smile widened.

"So has the prey."
