Chapter 2

The Stranger in Her House

The room remained frozen.

Rain battered the tall windows of the Hart residence while flashing red and blue lights reflected across the polished marble floor.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Little Lily clung desperately to Evelyn's neck, her tiny fingers gripping her mother's jacket as though letting go would make her disappear again.

Evelyn gently stroked her daughter's hair.

"It's over," she whispered.

"I'm here now."

Lily didn't answer.

She only held her tighter.

That frightened Evelyn more than the bruises.

A five-year-old should cry.

A five-year-old should scream.

Instead, Lily had learned to stay silent.

Someone had taught her that silence was safer.

Special Agent Daniel Brooks stepped into the living room with two federal officers.

He had worked beside Evelyn for nearly eight years.

He knew her well enough to recognize the dangerous calm in her eyes.

She wasn't simply angry.

She was calculating.

Every detail.

Every face.

Every lie.

His gaze settled on Grant.

"What exactly is happening here?"

Grant swallowed.

"I can explain."

Evelyn answered before he could continue.

"I hope so."

"Because if you can't..."

She glanced at Lily's swollen hand.

"...the law will."

Caroline slowly stood from the sofa.

She crossed her arms confidently.

"I don't know who all these people are..."

She looked directly at Evelyn.

"...but this is between a husband and wife."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Ma'am, identify yourself."

She smiled politely.

"Caroline Bennett."

"Occupation?"

"Interior designer."

"Relationship to the homeowner?"

She answered without hesitation.

"I'm Grant's fiancée."

The room fell silent.

Grant closed his eyes.

"Evelyn..."

"I said nothing."

Her voice remained calm.

"You'll have your turn."

She looked back at Caroline.

"You said fiancée."

Caroline nodded.

"Yes."

"We're getting married."

She reached into her purse and proudly removed a diamond ring.

Grant looked horrified.

Caroline smiled.

"He proposed two months ago."

She admired the ring.

"He told me his wife died during a classified operation overseas."

Daniel slowly turned toward Grant.

"You reported Agent Hart dead?"

Grant immediately shook his head.

"No!"

"I never filed anything officially."

"I just..."

His voice faded.

"You just lied."

Evelyn finished the sentence for him.

Caroline laughed nervously.

"This has to be some misunderstanding."

She looked at Grant.

"Tell them."

Grant remained silent.

Caroline's confidence began to crack.

"You said Evelyn abandoned you."

Silence.

"You said she chose her career over her family."

Still silence.

"You told me she didn't love Lily anymore."

Lily buried her face deeper into Evelyn's shoulder.

Evelyn felt the little girl's body trembling.

That single sentence explained months of emotional abuse.

Someone had convinced her daughter that her mother had chosen not to come home.

Evelyn looked directly at Caroline.

"Did you ever wonder why a woman would leave behind her five-year-old daughter without a single phone call?"

Caroline hesitated.

"I..."

"No."

"You never asked."

Caroline's eyes shifted toward Grant.

For the first time, doubt replaced arrogance.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Miss Bennett, how long have you been living here?"

"Almost five months."

"And whose house did you believe this was?"

She frowned.

"Grant's."

Evelyn quietly answered.

"It isn't."

She looked around the room.

"This house belonged to my grandmother."

"It was left to me before I married Grant."

Caroline slowly turned toward Grant.

"You told me you bought it."

Grant lowered his head.

Another lie.

One of the federal agents approached Daniel carrying a tablet.

"Sir."

"The body cameras are recording."

Daniel nodded.

"Good."

He looked at Caroline.

"Everything you say from this point forward is being documented."

She suddenly appeared much less confident.

Evelyn gently sat Lily on a nearby armchair.

She knelt in front of her daughter.

"Lily..."

The little girl wouldn't look up.

"I'm going to ask you something."

"You don't have to be afraid."

Lily whispered,

"Will Daddy get mad?"

The question broke everyone's heart.

Evelyn swallowed hard.

"No."

"Not anymore."

Lily slowly lifted her eyes.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Evelyn carefully took Lily's injured hand.

"Who hurt you?"

The little girl hesitated.

Her eyes moved toward Caroline.

Then toward Grant.

Immediately, she became silent again.

Evelyn noticed.

So did Daniel.

Fear wasn't directed at one person.

It was directed at both.

Daniel crouched beside them.

"Lily."

"My name is Daniel."

"You've met me before."

The little girl nodded faintly.

"I brought you ice cream."

A tiny smile appeared.

"Chocolate."

"That's right."

He smiled warmly.

"Can you tell me who stepped on your hand?"

Lily looked down.

Then whispered so softly they almost couldn't hear.

"Miss Caroline."

Daniel nodded gently.

"And who told Miss Caroline she could punish you?"

Lily closed her eyes.

"Daddy."

Grant's face turned white.

Caroline immediately shook her head.

"No!"

"That's not what happened!"

"I never wanted to hurt her!"

She pointed at Grant.

"He said children need discipline."

"He told me Lily was spoiled because Evelyn was never around."

Grant finally spoke.

"I never told you to hurt her."

"You didn't stop me."

Caroline fired back.

"You watched."

"You agreed."

"You even said—"

She stopped herself.

Daniel looked at her.

"Said what?"

Caroline stared at Grant.

Then laughed bitterly.

"You know what?"

"I'm done protecting you."

She reached into her handbag.

"I kept everything."

Grant frowned.

"What?"

"The messages."

"The emails."

"The recordings."

Grant's face lost all color.

"You recorded me?"

"You told me never to trust businessmen."

She smiled coldly.

"I listened."

Caroline handed her phone to Daniel.

"There are months of conversations."

Grant lunged toward her.

"Don't!"

Two federal officers immediately restrained him.

"Sir!"

"Stay where you are!"

Daniel opened the evidence folder.

Hundreds of voice recordings.

Thousands of text messages.

Financial transfers.

Photographs.

One recording immediately caught his attention.

Grant_HouseRules.mp3

He pressed play.

Grant's voice filled the room.

"If Lily disobeys, don't comfort her."

"She has to learn."

"No dinner if she cries."

Another recording.

"She'll stop asking for Evelyn eventually."

Another.

"The sooner she forgets her mother..."

"...the easier everything becomes."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Each sentence struck like a knife.

Caroline looked at Evelyn.

"I swear..."

"I didn't know you were alive."

Evelyn believed her.

Caroline had been manipulated.

But that didn't erase what she had done.

"You still chose cruelty."

Caroline lowered her head.

"I know."

Tears rolled down her face.

"I know."

Just then, another federal agent hurried into the room.

"Agent Hart."

"We found something."

"What is it?"

"The home's security server."

Grant immediately looked up.

His panic was obvious.

Daniel noticed.

"Interesting."

The agent continued.

"Most of the recordings have been erased."

"But someone missed one backup drive."

Grant's breathing became uneven.

Daniel asked,

"How old is the footage?"

The technician looked at the screen.

"About six months."

"Play it."

The television mounted above the fireplace flickered to life.

Black-and-white security footage filled the screen.

The date appeared in the corner.

Exactly one month after Evelyn had left on her mission.

Lily stood alone in the kitchen holding a framed family photograph.

She hugged it tightly.

Then Grant entered.

He ripped the photograph from her hands.

The frame shattered on the floor.

Lily burst into tears.

Grant bent down until they were eye level.

His words had no audio.

But the security system automatically generated subtitles through its voice-recognition software.

Everyone read them at the same time.

"Your mother isn't coming back."

Lily shook her head desperately.

Grant continued.

"She chose strangers over you."

The little girl collapsed onto the floor crying.

Then the footage showed something even worse.

Grant picked up every photograph of Evelyn from the living room.

One by one...

He threw them into the fireplace.

Lily tried to stop him.

He pushed her away.

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

Daniel slowly turned toward Grant.

"I don't think this investigation is about adultery anymore."

Evelyn stared silently at the man she had once trusted with her life.

The man standing before her wasn't the husband she had married.

He was a stranger.

And she had only begun to uncover the truth.
