Chapter 6

Chapter 6
The Enemy Within
The secure alert remained on every screen.
PRIORITY RED
COMPROMISE DETECTED
DO NOT TRUST INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS
For several seconds, no one spoke.
The words echoed through the room with terrifying clarity.
Someone inside the federal system had been feeding classified information to the Syndicate.
Someone with enough authority to access mission schedules, witness identities, and protected family records.
Someone who had known exactly when Evelyn would return home.
Daniel Brooks slowly locked his phone.
"Nobody leaves this house."
The agents looked at him.
"Effective immediately, all communications are restricted. Every call, every email, every encrypted message goes through me."
One of the younger agents frowned.
"Sir, if there's really a mole—"
"There is."
Daniel interrupted.
"The only question is how high this reaches."
Evelyn stood at the dining table, staring at the flash drive recovered from Lily's stuffed rabbit.
She replayed every mission from the past decade.
Every operation that had failed.
Every undercover agent whose identity had somehow been exposed.
At the time, everyone had blamed bad luck.
Now she wasn't so sure.
Daniel walked over quietly.
"What are you thinking?"
She didn't look up.
"I've spent years hunting criminals."
She paused.
"I never imagined someone was hunting us."
Across the room, Grant remained handcuffed under armed guard.
He watched the agents moving through the house, cataloging evidence and photographing every document.
His expression wasn't one of anger.
It was resignation.
He finally understood that there was no escape.
Not from the law.
Not from his past.
Evelyn approached him.
"This is your last chance."
Grant slowly raised his eyes.
"Tell me everything."
He took a long breath.
"I don't know their real names."
"Start with what you do know."
"It began almost six years ago."
"My investment firm was collapsing."
"I owed money to the wrong people."
"I thought bankruptcy would destroy my life."
"So when a man offered to erase every debt..."
"I accepted."
Daniel asked,
"Mr. Black?"
Grant nodded.
"He never introduced himself."
"He simply said he represented an organization that rewarded useful people."
"What did they want?"
"Access."
"To what?"
"My business clients."
Grant laughed bitterly.
"I thought they wanted financial information."
"I was wrong."
"They already knew everything about me."
"My accounts."
"My marriage."
"My daughter."
"My wife's career."
"They even knew details Evelyn had never told me."
The room became quiet.
"They weren't recruiting me."
Grant whispered.
"They had been studying me for years."
Daniel opened a notebook.
"When did they first mention Agent Hart?"
"The second meeting."
"What did they ask?"
Grant hesitated.
"They wanted to know how often she traveled."
"Who she worked with."
"Whether she ever discussed classified cases at home."
Evelyn answered before Daniel could.
"I never did."
Grant nodded.
"I know."
"So what did you tell them?"
"The truth."
"That you never brought work home."
Evelyn frowned.
"Then why did they keep you?"
Grant's face darkened.
"Because eventually..."
"...they didn't need information from me anymore."
"They needed access."
Daniel exchanged a quick glance with the forensic analyst.
"Access to the house."
Grant nodded.
"They installed equipment."
"What kind?"
"I don't know."
"They came whenever Evelyn was deployed."
"They searched everything."
"They copied computers."
"They photographed documents."
"They even took DNA samples."
Evelyn's blood ran cold.
"My house was used as an intelligence collection site."
Grant nodded silently.
At that moment, the forensic team's lead technician hurried into the room.
"Agent Brooks."
"We've completed the electronic sweep."
Daniel looked up.
"What did you find?"
The technician placed several devices on the table.
Tiny black modules.
Each no larger than a coin.
"There were twenty-three surveillance devices hidden throughout the house."
Evelyn stared at them.
"Twenty-three?"
"They were concealed inside smoke detectors, light fixtures, electrical outlets..."
He paused.
"And even Lily's bedroom."
The room fell silent.
Lily, sitting quietly beside a female agent, hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.
She looked at Evelyn.
"That's why they always knew when I cried."
Evelyn's heart shattered.
She walked over and knelt beside her daughter.
"No one will ever watch you again."
"I promise."
Daniel turned back to the technician.
"Any transmissions?"
"Yes."
"They weren't recording locally."
"They streamed everything live."
"Destination?"
The technician connected one of the devices to a secure analyzer.
After several moments, a map appeared.
Data routes crossed multiple countries.
Canada.
Germany.
Singapore.
Argentina.
Then finally...
One encrypted relay server in Switzerland.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"This isn't one criminal group."
The analyst nodded.
"It's a global network."
Another technician entered carrying a printed report.
"We decrypted part of the flash drive."
Daniel looked surprised.
"Already?"
"Only a small portion."
"What did you find?"
The technician swallowed.
"The List wasn't their primary database."
"It was only an index."
Evelyn frowned.
"An index to what?"
The technician laid several pages on the table.
At the top of each page appeared a familiar symbol.
A black crown.
Below it, one chilling title:
THE SYNDICATE DIRECTORATE
Daniel quickly scanned the pages.
His expression grew darker with every line.
"This can't be right."
Evelyn stepped beside him.
"What is it?"
He pointed to a paragraph.
"The Syndicate doesn't operate like a traditional criminal organization."
"It doesn't have one leader."
"It has a council."
"Seven members."
"Known only by titles."
He continued reading aloud.
"The Banker."
"The Judge."
"The Minister."
"The Broker."
"The Ghost."
"The Surgeon."
"And..."
He stopped.
Evelyn looked at him.
"And?"
"The Director."
Grant closed his eyes.
"I only ever met one."
"Which one?"
"The Broker."
Daniel looked sharply at him.
"The Broker recruited you?"
Grant nodded.
"He recruited businessmen."
"Politicians."
"Corporate executives."
"Anyone who could provide influence."
"What about Mr. Black?"
Grant answered quietly.
"He worked for the Broker."
Suddenly, one of the analysts called out.
"I found something."
Everyone turned toward his monitor.
"The surveillance devices."
"What about them?"
"They weren't just recording."
He enlarged a circuit diagram.
"They were listening for specific words."
"What words?"
He highlighted a programmed trigger list.
Operation
Evidence
Witness
Agent
Mission
Transfer
Vault
And one final word.
Evelyn.
The room became deathly quiet.
Every conversation inside the house mentioning Evelyn's name had been automatically transmitted to the Syndicate.
For years.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"This explains everything."
"The failed operations."
"The exposed witnesses."
"The assassinations."
Evelyn slowly realized the horrifying truth.
"My family wasn't targeted because I investigated the Syndicate."
She looked around the room.
"I was chosen because they wanted someone inside my home."
Grant lowered his head.
"And I gave them exactly that."
Before anyone could speak again, Daniel's secure phone rang.
The caller ID displayed only one word.
DIRECTOR
He answered immediately.
"Brooks."
The voice on the other end was tense.
"Leave the Hart residence."
Daniel frowned.
"Sir?"
"Now."
"Why?"
"Because you're no longer in charge of this investigation."
Daniel exchanged a quick glance with Evelyn.
"Who is?"
A brief silence followed.
Then the Director replied.
"A special review team."
"When are they arriving?"
"They're already outside."
Daniel slowly walked toward the front window.
Three black SUVs had just entered the driveway.
No agency markings.
No flashing lights.
Men in dark suits stepped out carrying federal credentials.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
"Do you know them?"
He stared at the lead man climbing the front steps.
His face turned pale.
"I've never seen them before."
The front door opened.
The lead official smiled politely and displayed a government badge.
"Special Agent Marcus Cole."
He looked around the room.
"By authority of the Department of Justice..."
"...this investigation is now under my command."
Daniel didn't move.
"Show me your transfer orders."
Marcus handed him a sealed envelope.
Daniel read the first page.
Then the second.
His eyes narrowed.
The signatures were genuine.
The orders were authentic.
Everything appeared legitimate.
Yet one detail made his blood run cold.
The authorization had been issued...
Only twenty-three minutes earlier.
Someone at the highest level of government had reacted almost instantly to the discovery of the flash drive.
Someone who already knew exactly what had been found.
Marcus smiled again.
"Now..."
He extended his hand.
"I'll need the evidence."
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked back at her.
Neither of them said a word.
But both reached the same conclusion.
The enemy had just walked through the front door.
