Chapter 7

No More Running

The room fell silent as Special Agent Marcus Cole extended his hand.

"I'll need all evidence recovered from this residence."

His tone was calm.

Professional.

Almost rehearsed.

Daniel Brooks didn't move.

Neither did Evelyn.

Around them, the federal agents exchanged uneasy glances. Everyone could feel the tension, but no one wanted to be the first to break it.

Marcus smiled politely.

"Is there a problem, Agent Brooks?"

Daniel folded the transfer order and placed it on the table.

"There's one thing I don't understand."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"The authorization was signed twenty-three minutes ago."

"Correct."

"Our forensic team recovered the flash drive only nineteen minutes ago."

The smile on Marcus's face faded almost imperceptibly.

Daniel continued.

"So tell me..."

"How did Washington know what we'd found before we found it?"

Silence.

Marcus's expression remained composed.

"Information travels quickly."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not that quickly."

He looked around the room.

"No one contacted headquarters."

"No evidence has left this house."

"So either someone here informed you..."

"...or someone else has been watching this investigation in real time."

Marcus didn't answer.

He simply looked at Evelyn.

"Agent Hart."

"I've admired your work for years."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"We've never met."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"No."

"But I've read every one of your case files."

Something about the way he said it unsettled her.

Daniel stepped between them.

"My team will retain custody of the evidence until I verify your authority."

Marcus's voice cooled.

"Be careful, Brooks."

"You're dangerously close to insubordination."

Daniel didn't blink.

"I'll take that risk."

For a long moment, neither man spoke.

Then Marcus slowly lowered his hand.

"As you wish."

He turned toward the agents who had arrived with him.

"We'll wait."

The newcomers spread through the foyer.

Not one of them offered assistance.

Not one examined the crime scene.

Instead, they quietly watched.

Every movement.

Every conversation.

Like observers.

Or guards.

Evelyn leaned closer to Daniel.

"You don't trust him."

Daniel kept his voice low.

"I trust the badge."

He paused.

"I don't trust the man wearing it."

Across the room, Grant spoke for the first time since Marcus arrived.

He stared at the newcomer with unmistakable fear.

Marcus noticed.

Their eyes met for barely a second.

It was enough.

Grant immediately looked away.

Evelyn saw it.

"So..."

She said quietly.

"You know him."

Grant hesitated.

"I've..."

He stopped.

Marcus interrupted smoothly.

"Mr. Hart is under a great deal of stress."

Grant remained silent.

Too silent.

Daniel noticed as well.

He turned toward two agents.

"Escort Mr. Hart upstairs."

Marcus spoke sharply.

"No."

The room froze.

Daniel looked at him.

"No?"

Marcus folded his hands behind his back.

"The prisoner remains here."

"Why?"

"He may become evidence."

Daniel frowned.

"He already is evidence."

Marcus smiled.

"We disagree."

That single sentence confirmed Evelyn's suspicion.

Marcus wasn't protecting the investigation.

He was protecting something else.

Lily quietly tugged on Evelyn's sleeve.

"Mommy?"

Evelyn immediately knelt beside her.

"Yes?"

"The scary man..."

She glanced toward Marcus.

"...he smells the same."

Evelyn frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The man in black."

"He wore the same cologne."

Time seemed to stop.

Evelyn looked slowly toward Marcus.

He was standing nearly twenty feet away.

Yet Lily recognized the scent instantly.

Children often remembered details adults overlooked.

Daniel saw the change in Evelyn's face.

"What is it?"

"Lily says Marcus wears the same cologne as Mr. Black."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

Marcus appeared completely unfazed.

"Children confuse memories all the time."

Perhaps.

But Evelyn had spent years interviewing traumatized children.

They often forgot faces.

They almost never forgot smells.

Daniel quietly pressed the emergency alert button hidden beneath his watch.

A silent signal went directly to Internal Affairs.

No lights.

No alarms.

Only a request for immediate verification.

If Marcus was legitimate...

No harm done.

If he wasn't...

Help was already on the way.

Minutes passed.

No confirmation arrived.

Instead...

Every phone inside the house suddenly lost signal.

The forensic computers disconnected from the secure federal network.

Even the satellite backup failed.

The technician looked up in confusion.

"We've lost every connection."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Can someone jam government frequencies?"

The technician answered quietly.

"Only with military-grade equipment."

Marcus casually checked his watch.

"I'm afraid this has gone on long enough."

He looked at his team.

"Collect the evidence."

Daniel stepped forward.

"No."

Marcus sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't make this difficult."

At that exact moment, six members of Marcus's team reached inside their jackets.

Not for badges.

For weapons.

Federal agents throughout the room instantly drew their own firearms.

Within seconds, the living room became a standoff.

Lily clung to Evelyn.

"Mommy..."

"It's okay."

Evelyn whispered.

"Stay behind me."

Marcus spoke calmly despite the drawn guns.

"Nobody has to die today."

Daniel answered.

"Then leave."

"I'm afraid I can't."

"The flash drive belongs to us."

"You mean the Syndicate."

Marcus smiled.

For the first time...

It wasn't the smile of a federal agent.

It was the smile of a man who no longer needed to pretend.

"You always were quick, Agent Hart."

Grant suddenly shouted.

"Run!"

Everyone turned toward him.

"They'll kill all of you!"

Before anyone could react, one of Marcus's men struck Grant across the face with the butt of a pistol.

Grant collapsed to the floor.

"Enough."

Marcus said coldly.

Evelyn had seen enough.

She slowly handed Lily to Daniel.

"Protect her."

Daniel nodded once.

"Always."

Evelyn stood.

Months earlier, she had survived one of the most dangerous covert operations in the world.

She had dismantled trafficking rings.

Escaped hostage camps.

Disarmed trained killers.

She hadn't survived all of that...

To surrender her daughter now.

She removed the small federal badge from inside her jacket.

Then clipped it firmly onto her belt.

Marcus watched with quiet amusement.

"You think one agent can stop this?"

Evelyn's voice was steady.

"I think one mother can."

Without warning, the house's backup generator exploded.

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Gunfire erupted.

People shouted.

Furniture crashed.

But Evelyn didn't fire a single shot.

Instead, she moved exactly as she had been trained.

Fast.

Silent.

Precise.

She knew every hallway.

Every doorway.

Every blind corner of the house.

Within seconds, she disappeared into the darkness.

Marcus cursed.

"Find her!"

His men scattered.

Too late.

Emergency lights flickered back to life.

The living room was empty.

The evidence table was gone.

So was the flash drive.

Daniel looked around in surprise.

Then smiled.

Only one person could have done it.

Deep beneath the house, Evelyn raced through a narrow maintenance tunnel built during the mansion's original construction.

Years earlier, she had discovered the forgotten passage while renovating the property.

She had never told anyone.

Not even Grant.

The tunnel led beneath the gardens to an abandoned carriage house at the edge of the estate.

Inside her backpack were the flash drive...

Project Veil...

The classified files...

And the only evidence capable of exposing the Syndicate.

She wasn't running anymore.

She was protecting the truth.

As she emerged into the abandoned carriage house, a familiar voice spoke from the shadows.

"I was hoping you'd remember this place."

Evelyn spun, drawing her pistol.

A man stepped into the moonlight.

Silver hair.

Weathered face.

A scar above his left eyebrow.

Former Deputy Director Thomas Mercer.

The man who had recruited her into federal service twelve years earlier.

She lowered her weapon slightly.

"Director Mercer?"

He smiled sadly.

"I don't work for the Bureau anymore."

"What are you doing here?"

His eyes settled on the backpack.

"I came to help you finish what we started."

Evelyn frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Mercer's expression turned grave.

"The Syndicate isn't your real enemy."

He took a slow step forward.

"You've only seen the people carrying out the orders."

He paused.

"The person giving those orders..."

"...is someone you've trusted your entire career."

The night suddenly felt colder.

Somewhere in the distance, sirens echoed across the sleeping city.

The war Evelyn thought she understood had just become far more dangerous.

Because this time...

The greatest threat wasn't hiding in the shadows.

It was hiding behind a badge.
