Chapter 3

A Father's Betrayal

The security footage ended.

No one in the living room moved.

The crackling fire from the video still seemed to echo in everyone's ears.

Grant Hart stood in complete silence, his face pale as the federal agents stared at him with growing suspicion.

Little Lily buried herself against Evelyn's shoulder.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She simply refused to look at her father.

That hurt Evelyn more than any tears ever could.

Daniel Brooks closed the tablet.

His voice became all business.

"Grant Hart."

"I need you to answer a few questions."

Grant slowly nodded.

"Of course."

Daniel's eyes never left him.

"Did you knowingly destroy evidence belonging to a federal employee?"

Grant frowned.

"What?"

"The security recordings."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Daniel looked toward the technician.

The young analyst immediately spoke.

"The home surveillance system originally contained over six thousand hours of recordings."

"Almost ninety-two percent of the files were permanently erased."

"When?"

"Over several months."

He looked directly at Grant.

"The deletions were performed using the homeowner's administrator password."

Silence.

Grant swallowed.

"I... cleaned the storage."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You deleted six months of family security footage?"

Grant nodded weakly.

"It was taking up space."

No one believed him.

Another agent entered carrying several evidence bags.

"Sir."

"We searched Mr. Hart's home office."

Daniel turned.

"What did you find?"

"A hidden safe."

Grant immediately looked up.

"You searched my office?"

"We had probable cause."

The agent placed the evidence bags on the dining table.

Inside were stacks of cash.

Several foreign passports.

Three encrypted cell phones.

And a thick folder marked:

CONFIDENTIAL

Evelyn stared at the passports.

Each carried Grant's photograph.

Each listed a different name.

Her stomach tightened.

Daniel slowly opened the folder.

Inside were financial statements.

Offshore accounts.

Wire transfer confirmations.

Corporate ownership documents.

The technician quickly scanned the first page.

His eyebrows shot upward.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"There are transfers totaling nearly forty-eight million dollars."

Evelyn looked at Grant in disbelief.

"You own a financial consulting company."

Grant remained silent.

"So where did forty-eight million dollars come from?"

Still nothing.

Daniel handed several documents to another agent.

"Run every account."

The agent nodded.

Minutes later his phone rang.

He listened carefully before looking back toward Daniel.

"Sir..."

"The Treasury Department already knows these accounts."

Daniel frowned.

"They're under investigation."

"For what?"

The agent hesitated.

"Money laundering."

The room went completely silent.

Evelyn felt the floor disappear beneath her.

For years she had trusted Grant with everything.

Their home.

Their daughter.

Their future.

Now federal investigators were linking him to organized financial crime.

She looked directly into his eyes.

"Tell me they're wrong."

Grant couldn't.

Caroline stared at him in horror.

"You said your company made millions."

Grant remained silent.

"You told me every dollar was legal."

Silence.

"You lied to me too?"

Grant finally exploded.

"I lied to everyone!"

The room froze.

His breathing became heavy.

"You think I wanted this?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"Wanted what?"

Grant laughed bitterly.

"You people have no idea."

Before anyone could respond, one of the agents hurried back inside.

"Agent Brooks!"

"What is it?"

"We found another room."

Everyone looked toward him.

"What room?"

"A hidden office."

Grant's face instantly changed.

"No..."

Daniel noticed immediately.

"No?"

Grant took one desperate step forward.

"You can't go in there."

Daniel's voice became calm.

"Why not?"

Grant looked trapped.

"There are... private business records."

Daniel nodded.

"Then we'll definitely look."

The hidden room was concealed behind a bookshelf inside Grant's office.

The electronic lock had already been forced open.

As the agents entered, everyone stopped.

The room looked nothing like an ordinary office.

Seven computer monitors covered one wall.

Satellite communication equipment filled another.

A large digital map displayed financial transactions moving across the globe in real time.

Daniel slowly walked toward the center desk.

"What exactly were you running?"

No one answered.

The technician powered on the primary computer.

It requested biometric authentication.

Grant remained silent.

Daniel looked at him.

"Fingerprint."

Grant refused.

Another agent gently but firmly guided his hand toward the scanner.

Access granted.

The monitors immediately came alive.

Thousands of encrypted files appeared.

Most carried meaningless serial numbers.

One folder immediately caught Daniel's attention.

PROJECT NIGHTFALL

He clicked it open.

Inside were dozens of government documents.

Classified government documents.

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

She stepped closer.

Her own mission reports.

Operational maps.

Confidential personnel files.

Even names of undercover federal agents.

Every document carried one identical watermark.

COPIED

Evelyn whispered,

"How..."

Daniel finished the sentence.

"...did a civilian obtain classified federal intelligence?"

Grant slowly lowered his head.

One final file remained unopened.

Its title read:

ASSET: E.H.

Daniel clicked it.

A photograph of Evelyn filled the screen.

Below it appeared detailed notes.

Daily routines.

Travel schedules.

Mission timelines.

Known associates.

Psychological evaluations.

The final line made Evelyn stop breathing.

Recommended Status: Permanent Removal Upon Mission Completion

The room erupted.

Daniel slammed both hands onto the desk.

"Who wrote this?"

Grant didn't answer.

Daniel shouted louder.

"WHO?"

Grant closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

"Liar!"

"I swear!"

"They sent it."

"Who?"

Grant looked as though saying the name would kill him.

Finally...

He whispered,

"The Syndicate."

Evelyn frowned.

"I've never heard of them."

Daniel had.

His face lost all color.

"No..."

One of the younger agents looked confused.

"What?"

Daniel spoke quietly.

"The Syndicate isn't supposed to exist."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"Three years ago..."

"We intercepted intelligence about a criminal organization."

"They specialized in selling classified information."

"No photographs."

"No confirmed leaders."

"No headquarters."

"Every investigation ended the same way."

"Dead witnesses."

"Missing evidence."

"Disappearing agents."

Evelyn slowly looked back at Grant.

"You worked for them?"

Grant shook his head violently.

"No."

"They owned me."

Silence settled over the hidden office.

Grant finally collapsed into a chair.

"It started five years ago."

"My company was failing."

"I borrowed money."

"I couldn't repay it."

"They approached me."

"They cleared every debt."

Daniel asked quietly,

"In exchange for what?"

Grant stared at the floor.

"They wanted information."

"What kind?"

"Anything connected to government employees."

Everyone slowly turned toward Evelyn.

Grant couldn't look at her.

"When they discovered my wife was a federal agent..."

"They became interested."

Evelyn felt sick.

"You sold me."

Grant whispered,

"At first..."

"I only gave them public information."

"But every time I tried to stop..."

"They threatened Lily."

The room fell silent again.

Evelyn wanted to hate him.

Part of her already did.

But another part recognized something else.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not for himself.

For their daughter.

Yet fear did not erase betrayal.

He had made his choice.

Again and again.

And every choice had placed his family in greater danger.

Daniel closed the laptop.

"This house is now an active federal crime scene."

He looked toward two agents.

"Take Mr. Hart into custody."

Grant didn't resist.

As the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he finally looked at Evelyn.

"I'm sorry."

She answered without emotion.

"You should have been."

Years ago.

Before the lies.

Before the affair.

Before Lily learned to fear her own father.

As agents escorted Grant toward the front door, he suddenly stopped.

"There isn't much time."

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

"What do you mean?"

Grant turned slowly.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"They know Evelyn came home."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Grant looked directly at Evelyn.

"The Syndicate."

"They've already activated the contingency plan."

"What contingency?"

Grant's eyes filled with terror.

"They're coming for Lily."

Before anyone could react—

Every light inside the house went out.

The security monitors turned black.

Outside, the sound of screeching tires echoed through the rain.

Then...

The first gunshot shattered the front window.
