Chapter 5

Chapter 5
The Secret Files
The attack was over.
But the silence that followed felt even more dangerous.
Outside the Hart residence, flashing emergency lights painted the rain-soaked lawn in shades of red and blue. Federal agents secured every entrance while forensic teams photographed shattered windows, bullet casings, and footprints left by the fleeing gunmen.
The house that had once been a family home was now an active federal crime scene.
Inside the panic room, Evelyn held Lily close until Daniel Brooks unlocked the reinforced steel door.
"It's clear," he said quietly.
"For now."
Evelyn nodded but didn't move immediately.
She looked down at Lily.
"Can you walk with me?"
The little girl squeezed her stuffed rabbit.
"As long as you hold my hand."
"I always will."
The damage inside the mansion was worse than Evelyn had imagined.
The living room was covered with broken glass.
Blood stained one section of the marble floor where an agent had been wounded.
Furniture had been overturned during the firefight.
The family portraits that once decorated the walls were gone.
Only empty nail holes remained.
Every reminder of Evelyn had been erased long before she returned home.
Daniel noticed her looking at the walls.
"We'll recover what we can."
Evelyn gave a faint smile.
"It's not the photographs I'm worried about."
"It's the memories they tried to erase."
Grant sat handcuffed at the dining table under armed guard.
His expensive suit was stained with dust and shattered glass.
For the first time in years, he looked less like a successful businessman and more like a frightened man whose lies had finally caught up with him.
He looked at Lily.
She immediately hid behind Evelyn.
Grant lowered his eyes.
That hurt more than the handcuffs.
Daniel placed a thick evidence folder on the table.
"We've completed the initial search."
"What did you find?" Evelyn asked.
Daniel opened the file.
"A lot."
He spread dozens of photographs across the table.
Each showed hidden compartments inside Grant's office.
Secret safes.
Encrypted hard drives.
Stacks of foreign currency.
Several fake passports.
And dozens of classified government documents.
Evelyn's expression darkened.
"I never brought classified files home."
"We know."
"So how did they get here?"
Daniel sighed.
"That's what we're trying to understand."
A forensic analyst entered carrying a silver laptop.
"Agent Brooks."
"I've finished imaging the hard drives."
"Anything interesting?"
The analyst hesitated.
"I think you should see this yourself."
He connected the laptop to a monitor.
A directory appeared.
Hundreds of folders.
Each labeled with government agency abbreviations.
FBI
DEA
DHS
CIA
NSA
Even the Department of Defense.
Daniel's face hardened.
"This isn't just stolen information."
"It's an intelligence archive."
The analyst opened one folder.
Inside were operational reports from multiple federal investigations.
Most were marked:
TOP SECRET
Others carried the warning:
COMPARTMENTALIZED ACCESS ONLY
Evelyn immediately recognized one document.
Her own mission briefing from seven months earlier.
Every page.
Every classified detail.
Even names that should have been known by fewer than ten people.
She whispered,
"This was never supposed to leave headquarters."
Daniel turned slowly toward Grant.
"How?"
Grant remained silent.
Daniel slammed the folder shut.
"HOW?"
Grant finally looked up.
"I didn't steal them."
"Then who did?"
"They were delivered."
"By whom?"
"I don't know."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You expect us to believe someone dropped top-secret federal intelligence on your doorstep?"
Grant answered quietly.
"I never met them face to face."
"They always used couriers."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"What did they want in return?"
Grant swallowed.
"Storage."
"You hid classified information for a criminal organization?"
"I wasn't allowed to look inside."
Evelyn stared at him.
"And you expect anyone to believe that?"
Grant didn't answer.
One of the younger agents suddenly called from the hallway.
"Agent Hart!"
Everyone turned.
"What is it?"
"I think we found another hiding place."
The hidden compartment was inside the master bedroom.
Behind a painting Evelyn herself had chosen years earlier.
She watched silently as the forensic technician removed the frame.
A small steel safe was built directly into the wall.
Daniel frowned.
"Did you know about this?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
Grant looked away.
The safe opened after several minutes.
Inside was only one item.
A slim black folder.
No cash.
No jewelry.
Just a folder.
Daniel carefully placed it on the bed.
Across the front, in bold white letters, were two words.
PROJECT VEIL
Evelyn had never heard the name before.
Daniel had.
His expression immediately changed.
"No..."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You know this?"
"I hoped it wasn't real."
He slowly opened the folder.
The room became silent.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Every picture showed federal agents.
Some entering government buildings.
Others with their families.
Children.
Spouses.
Parents.
Each photograph carried handwritten notes.
Daily routines.
Weaknesses.
Home addresses.
School schedules.
Emergency contacts.
Someone had been hunting federal agents.
Not as professionals.
As families.
Evelyn searched through the photographs.
Then suddenly stopped.
There she was.
Standing outside Lily's preschool.
Holding her daughter's hand.
A red circle had been drawn around Lily.
Beneath the picture was a handwritten sentence.
Primary leverage point.
Evelyn felt her knees weaken.
They hadn't only been watching her.
They had been watching Lily.
Long before she left on her mission.
Daniel carefully removed another sheet from the folder.
It wasn't a photograph.
It was a payment ledger.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Millions of dollars transferred to individuals identified only by code names.
One code appeared repeatedly.
S-17
Daniel frowned.
"Run that designation."
The analyst typed quickly.
Seconds later he looked up.
"Sir..."
"S-17 appears in multiple federal investigations."
"Identity?"
"Unknown."
"But..."
He hesitated.
"What?"
"It appears to be someone inside the federal government."
The room fell silent.
Before anyone could speak again, Lily quietly tugged on Evelyn's sleeve.
"Mommy?"
Evelyn knelt beside her.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
Lily looked at the stuffed rabbit in her hands.
"I forgot."
"What did you forget?"
"The man in black..."
"He touched Bunny."
Evelyn frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He opened her."
Daniel immediately looked over.
"Opened?"
Lily nodded.
"He used a little screwdriver."
"He put something inside."
Every agent in the room froze.
Evelyn gently took the stuffed rabbit.
It looked ordinary.
Old.
Worn.
One ear had been stitched back together years ago.
Daniel handed it to the forensic technician.
"Carefully."
The technician examined the toy.
Then his eyes widened.
"There's fresh stitching."
"When?"
"It couldn't be more than a few months old."
He carefully cut the thread.
Soft stuffing spilled onto the table.
Then something metallic fell onto the wood with a quiet click.
A tiny encrypted flash drive.
No larger than a thumbnail.
No one spoke.
Daniel slowly picked it up.
"Why would someone hide this inside a child's toy?"
Grant stared at the flash drive.
His face turned completely white.
"Oh God..."
Evelyn looked sharply at him.
"You know what it is."
Grant whispered,
"I thought they'd already found it."
"What is it?"
"The insurance policy."
Daniel immediately connected the drive to a secure forensic computer.
A password prompt appeared.
Attempts remaining: 3.
The analyst bypassed the lock using a government decryption tool.
After several tense minutes...
The screen unlocked.
Only one folder appeared.
Its name sent a chill through the room.
THE LIST
Daniel opened it.
Hundreds of names filled the screen.
Federal judges.
Intelligence officers.
Military commanders.
Prosecutors.
Investigative journalists.
Every name was followed by one of three colored symbols.
Green.
Yellow.
Red.
Evelyn found her own name.
Next to it...
A red circle.
Beneath it were five chilling words.
Terminate after mission completion.
The room fell deathly silent.
Daniel slowly scrolled to the bottom of the file.
There was one final name.
Not a federal agent.
Not a politician.
Not a military officer.
Just a five-year-old child.
Lily Hart
Status:
Pending.
Evelyn's breath caught in her throat.
This had never been about revenge.
It had never been about Grant's affair.
Someone had planned to erase her entire family.
And the evidence proving it had been hidden inside her daughter's favorite toy all along.
Before anyone could process the discovery, every phone in the room vibrated at the same time.
A secure federal alert flashed across every screen.
PRIORITY RED
COMPROMISE DETECTED
DO NOT TRUST INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS
THE MOLE IS STILL ACTIVE.
Evelyn slowly looked around the room.
If the warning was true...
The enemy wasn't just outside the house.
The enemy was already inside the system.
