Chapter 1 — The Necklace and the Lie

Chapter 1 — The Necklace and the Lie
For several seconds after Daniel spoke, nobody in the grand foyer moved.
“You framed her.”
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
The words seemed to settle over the marble floor like a storm cloud.
Vanessa stood frozen beside the brown leather handbag.
Her face had gone completely white.
The diamond necklace still lay inside the open bag, sparkling beneath the chandelier.
Emily remained several feet away.
One hand covered the cheek Vanessa had slapped.
Her eyes were wet.
Her housekeeping uniform was wrinkled from the struggle, and a loose strand of dark hair had fallen across her face.
She looked nothing like a thief.
She looked like someone who had just realized that, for once, the truth might actually protect her.
Daniel turned toward the security monitor.
“Play it again.”
The head of security, Marcus, nodded.
The footage rewound.
Everyone watched.
Vanessa entered the foyer.
She looked around.
She checked the hallway.
Then she opened the brown handbag.
She removed the diamond necklace.
She smiled.
And placed it inside.
Emily didn't appear anywhere in the footage.
Not once.
The recording continued.
Vanessa closed the bag.
Then she deliberately left it on the marble floor.
Minutes later, she called for everyone.
And accused Emily.
A terrible silence followed.
Daniel slowly looked back at Vanessa.
“Explain.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I…”
“Explain.”
“It isn't what it looks like.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“It is exactly what it looks like.”
She stepped toward him.
“Daniel, you don't understand.”
“No.”
His voice was colder now.
“I understand perfectly.”
She looked around the room.
Several relatives avoided her eyes.
The housekeeper, Mrs. Collins, stood near the staircase with both hands clasped together.
Two guests whispered behind their hands.
Emily hadn't moved.
Vanessa suddenly pointed at the security system.
“That footage could have been edited.”
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You can't know that.”
“I can.”
He held up a tablet.
“The footage is stored simultaneously on three servers. The local system, the external backup, and the security company's encrypted cloud.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Marcus continued.
“Unless you hacked all three systems at exactly the same time, the footage hasn't been altered.”
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Are you hurt?”
Emily hesitated.
“No.”
His eyes moved to her cheek.
The red handprint was becoming darker.
“You're lying.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I'll be fine.”
Daniel took a step toward her.
“You don't have to be fine.”
Emily looked up.
Their eyes met.
For the first time that evening, Daniel saw something behind her fear.
Not weakness.
Dignity.
She had been humiliated in front of everyone.
Accused of stealing a necklace worth nearly two hundred thousand dollars.
Slapped.
Insulted.
And still, she hadn't screamed.
She hadn't begged.
She had simply waited for the truth.
Daniel turned back to Vanessa.
“Apologize.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I don't have to apologize to her.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You accused her of theft.”
“I was wrong.”
“You slapped her.”
Vanessa looked toward Emily.
“I lost control.”
“Then apologize.”
Vanessa clenched her fists.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily didn't respond.
Daniel looked at her.
“Was that enough?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Even Vanessa looked stunned.
Emily took a breath.
“I don't want her apology.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then what do you want?”
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“I want her to tell everyone why she did it.”
Vanessa's face tightened.
“That is ridiculous.”
“You wanted them to believe I was a thief.”
Emily's voice trembled, but she continued.
“You wanted me fired.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“You wanted Daniel to hate me.”
Still nothing.
Emily stepped closer.
“So tell them why.”
Vanessa's eyes flashed with anger.
“You think you're important?”
Emily's expression changed.
“No.”
She glanced at Daniel.
“I think you are afraid of something.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa stared at her.
Then she laughed.
It was a strange, nervous sound.
“You don't know anything about me.”
“Maybe not.”
Emily looked toward the handbag.
“But you knew exactly where that necklace would be.”
Vanessa's face changed.
Daniel noticed.
So did Marcus.
Emily continued.
“You knew which camera covered the foyer.”
Vanessa's breathing became faster.
“You knew everyone would be gathered here.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“And you knew I would be blamed.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“This is insane.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“It isn't.”
He walked toward her.
“This was planned.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I made a mistake.”
“You made several.”
Daniel stopped directly in front of her.
“And now I'm going to find out why.”
The guests were dismissed one by one.
The celebration was over.
Music stopped.
Dinner was untouched.
The mansion became strangely quiet.
Daniel remained in the foyer with Marcus, Emily, and Vanessa.
He picked up the necklace.
“Where did you get this?”
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Vanessa.”
“My mother gave it to me.”
Daniel frowned.
“Your mother?”
“Yes.”
“Why was it in your handbag?”
“I was going to put it away.”
Marcus looked skeptical.
“Why?”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Because I was afraid someone would steal it.”
Marcus almost laughed.
“From the person who stole it?”
Vanessa glared at him.
Daniel held up his hand.
“Enough.”
He looked at Emily.
“Go upstairs.”
Emily hesitated.
“Mr. Carter—”
“Daniel.”
She stopped.
He softened his voice.
“You've had a terrible evening.”
“I should finish cleaning.”
“No.”
She looked toward the dining room.
“There are guests—”
“They're gone.”
“I can still—”
“You don't work tonight.”
Emily nodded slowly.
“Thank you.”
She turned.
Then stopped.
Daniel noticed.
“What?”
Emily looked back at Vanessa.
“She didn't do this because of the necklace.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“What do you mean?”
Emily hesitated.
“She looked at me differently yesterday.”
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Emily continued.
“She asked me how long I'd worked here.”
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“What else?”
“She asked if I knew the family history.”
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“That's enough.”
Emily looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because you're making things up.”
Emily shook her head.
“I didn't say anything about your family.”
Vanessa went silent.
Daniel noticed.
That was the first real crack.
“Emily,” he said quietly, “go upstairs.”
She nodded.
Then she disappeared toward the servants' staircase.
Daniel waited until she was gone.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“What family history were you asking about?”
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Nothing.”
“Don't lie to me.”
“I was curious.”
“About what?”
She didn't answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Daniel.”
He held up his tablet.
“There is something else.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Marcus tapped the screen.
“Someone accessed the east-wing security terminal last night.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
“Can you trace it?”
“Yes.”
Marcus hesitated.
“But there's a problem.”
“What?”
“The access code belonged to your father.”
Daniel froze.
“My father has been dead for nine years.”
“I know.”
The room became silent.
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“Why are you looking at the floor?”
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Vanessa.”
She remained silent.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Did you know someone used my father's code?”
“No.”
“Did you know the east wing was accessed last night?”
“No.”
“Did you know anything about the necklace?”
“No.”
Daniel stared at her.
Then he asked the question that made her finally lose control.
“Were you looking for something in my father's study?”
Vanessa's eyes snapped toward him.
For half a second—
Daniel saw fear.
Real fear.
Then it disappeared.
“I've never been inside his study.”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“That isn't true.”
Vanessa turned.
“What?”
Marcus pulled up another recording.
The footage showed Vanessa entering Daniel's father's old study at 11:43 p.m.
She remained inside for nearly seventeen minutes.
When she emerged, she was carrying a small black box.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“What was in the box?”
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Nothing.”
Marcus zoomed in.
The box had a distinctive silver emblem.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
His father's private seal.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You've been lying to me all night.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You stole something from my father's study.”
“No.”
“Then what was in the box?”
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
“I can't tell you.”
“Why?”
She looked toward the staircase.
Then whispered:
“Because if I tell you…”
She stopped.
Daniel waited.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“…they'll kill me.”
The room went completely silent.
Marcus lowered his tablet.
Daniel's expression changed.
“Who?”
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Who will kill you?”
She looked at him.
And for the first time that night, Daniel realized Vanessa might not be the person controlling this game.
She might be terrified of someone else.
Upstairs, Emily stood alone in the servants' hallway.
She leaned against the wall.
Her hands were shaking.
She had almost reached her room when she heard a sound behind her.
A door opening.
Emily turned.
No one was there.
She looked down the corridor.
Darkness.
Then she noticed something on the floor.
A small black envelope.
Her name was written across it.
EMILY.
She picked it up.
Her heart began pounding.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed a young woman standing outside the Carter mansion twenty-three years earlier.
Emily stared at the photograph.
She knew the woman.
She had seen her face only once.
In an old photograph her mother had kept hidden.
Her mother.
But there was something else.
Standing beside her mother was a younger version of Daniel's father.
And in his arms was a baby.
Emily turned the photograph over.
Five words had been written on the back.
You are not who they told you.
Emily's fingers began to tremble.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
She spun around.
A shadow disappeared around the corner.
Emily ran after it.
“Wait!”
She reached the end of the hallway.
Nothing.
Only an open window.
Cold night air blew through the curtains.
She looked down.
Three floors below, the garden was empty.
Then her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
Stop asking questions.
Another message followed.
The necklace was only the beginning.
Emily stared at the screen.
A third message arrived.
If Daniel discovers who you really are, he will never forgive you.
Emily's heart stopped.
Because there was one thing the sender didn't know.
Daniel had already started investigating.
And once Daniel Carter discovered the truth—
May you like
the entire mansion would change.
Forever.
