Chapter 12 — The Recording That Exposed Them All

Chapter 12 — The Recording That Exposed Them All

The hospital fell silent.

Every screen in the abandoned lobby displayed the same frozen image.

David Carter stood beside a young boy.

The boy was no more than three.

He had dark hair.

Brown eyes.

And a small mark beneath his left eye.

Michael stared at the screen as if looking at a ghost.

“That’s me.”

Daniel couldn't answer.

He had spent his entire life believing his father had died before revealing the truth.

Now David was standing before them.

Alive.

Speaking.

Explaining everything.

The recording began.

“Daniel.”

David's voice was calm.

“If you're watching this, then the three of you have finally found each other.”

Daniel's throat tightened.

“I know what you're thinking.”

The image changed.

David was sitting behind his old desk.

“Why did I disappear?”

“Why did I allow my family to believe I was dead?”

“Why did I let Emily and Alexander grow up without knowing each other?”

David lowered his eyes.

“Because I believed it was the only way to keep you alive.”

Michael stepped closer to the screen.

“Dad.”

His voice broke.

Clara covered her mouth.

Daniel couldn't move.

The recording continued.

“The Carter family fortune was never the reason people came after us.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

David leaned closer to the camera.

“The fortune was only the surface.”

Behind him were stacks of documents.

Political records.

Bank statements.

Property deeds.

Photographs.

“The real power was contained in something called the Founder's Trust.”

Margaret's expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

She knew exactly what he meant.

David continued.

“My grandfather created the trust in 1948.”

“The trust controlled companies, hospitals, foundations, land, and political donations.”

“But he included one condition.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

NO SINGLE HEIR MAY CONTROL THE TRUST.

David's voice continued.

“The trust can only be activated when all three biological heirs acknowledge one another.”

Michael whispered:

“So that's why.”

Daniel nodded.

“They needed all of us.”

David continued.

“And that is why my enemies tried to separate my children.”

The screen changed again.

Photographs appeared.

Emily as a baby.

Daniel as a child.

Alexander.

Clara.

Evelyn.

Richard.

Margaret.

Vanessa.

Peter.

One by one.

Then another image appeared.

A photograph of Eleanor.

David's voice became colder.

“Some of them acted because they wanted money.”

“Others acted because they wanted control.”

“But one person started everything.”

Margaret stepped toward the screen.

“Turn it off.”

No one moved.

David's face appeared again.

“Her name is Margaret Carter.”

Daniel looked at Margaret.

She remained strangely calm.

David continued.

“My mother's sister.”

“She believed the Founder's Trust belonged to her.”

“She spent years trying to manipulate my father.”

“When that failed, she turned to me.”

Margaret's expression hardened.

“You don't know what happened.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You're about to tell us.”

David continued.

“She offered me a choice.”

“Give her control of the trust…”

“…or lose my family.”

The screen showed an old letter.

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

Margaret's.

Your children can disappear as easily as they arrived.

Clara began crying.

David continued.

“I refused.”

“The first person Margaret targeted was Evelyn.”

Evelyn appeared on another screen.

She was younger.

Pregnant.

Terrified.

Daniel stared.

“She was pregnant with Alexander.”

Michael's breathing stopped.

David continued.

“Margaret arranged for Evelyn's car to be forced off the road.”

“She survived.”

“But everyone believed she had died.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I was eighteen weeks pregnant,” she whispered.

David's recording continued.

“I thought I had lost her.”

“I didn't know she survived.”

“Then Emily was born.”

The screen showed a photograph of a newborn baby.

Daniel recognized Emily.

David smiled sadly.

“She became the second target.”

“Margaret believed Emily's existence threatened her claim to the trust.”

“So she arranged for Emily to disappear.”

Emily watched from the corridor.

Tears ran down her face.

“She didn't disappear by accident.”

David continued.

“She was taken.”

Clara whispered:

“I was told she died.”

David's voice softened.

“Clara was innocent.”

“She believed the lie.”

The screen changed.

A photograph showed Clara holding baby Emily.

Margaret watched from a doorway.

Daniel turned toward her.

“You watched.”

Margaret didn't answer.

“You knew.”

Still nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew my sister was alive.”

Margaret smiled.

“I knew everything.”

Michael looked at her.

“And me?”

Margaret turned toward him.

“You were the difficult one.”

“Why?”

“Because you weren't supposed to survive.”

Michael froze.

Daniel's expression changed.

Margaret continued:

“Your mother escaped.”

“Your father found her.”

“Then David found both of you.”

Michael whispered:

“And you tried to kill us.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I tried to protect the trust.”

“You call that protection?”

“It was necessary.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed three children to protect a bank account.”

Margaret's eyes flashed.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She pointed toward the screens.

“Your father was not a hero.”

The recording continued.

David's face became serious.

“I know Margaret will tell you I was responsible for everything.”

“She will say I created this war.”

“She is partly right.”

Daniel frowned.

David continued.

“I made mistakes.”

“I trusted the wrong people.”

“I hid too much.”

“And I believed I could control a machine that had been running for generations.”

He paused.

“I was wrong.”

The screen changed.

A list of names appeared.

Some were crossed out.

Some were highlighted.

Daniel recognized several.

Judges.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Police officials.

Doctors.

Executives.

The Carter family had influence everywhere.

David continued.

“The Founder's Trust was never supposed to be used for personal power.”

“It was created to protect people.”

“But over time, people turned it into a weapon.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“And Margaret wanted it.”

“Yes.”

David looked directly into the camera.

“But she wasn't alone.”

The room went silent.

David said:

“There was another person.”

Margaret's face suddenly lost color.

Daniel noticed.

“Who?”

The recording continued.

“This person helped Margaret manipulate the family.”

“He helped falsify records.”

“He helped hide Emily.”

“He helped disappear Alexander.”

“He helped arrange my death.”

Daniel's heart pounded.

“Who?”

David looked directly into the camera.

“The person I trusted most.”

The screen went black.

A new video appeared.

A hospital corridor.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

The night his father supposedly died.

A man walked toward David's hospital room.

Daniel leaned closer.

The man removed his coat.

His face became visible.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Michael whispered:

“No.”

Clara screamed.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

The man on the screen was—

Thomas.

The same man Daniel had trusted for years.

The same man who had advised him after his father's death.

The same man who had claimed to protect the family.

Daniel's voice shook.

“Thomas.”

The recording showed him entering David's room.

Then another figure appeared.

Margaret.

The two stood beside David's bed.

David was unconscious.

Margaret handed Thomas a small syringe.

Daniel stared.

“You poisoned him.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

She pointed at the screen.

“Watch.”

Thomas injected the substance into David's IV.

David's heart monitor began changing.

Daniel's fists clenched.

“Thomas killed him.”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say you didn't?”

“I didn't order it.”

Daniel stared.

“Who did?”

Margaret looked at the screen.

Thomas turned toward the camera.

And for the first time, his face showed fear.

The recording continued.

Thomas said:

“I can't do this.”

Margaret answered:

“You already agreed.”

“David is my friend.”

“He was.”

“He trusted me.”

“And that's why you're useful.”

Thomas stepped backward.

“I want out.”

Margaret's expression hardened.

“You don't get out.”

The screen changed.

A second man entered the room.

Peter.

Daniel's eyes widened.

Peter stood beside Thomas.

Margaret handed him an envelope.

“Make sure the car is destroyed.”

Peter nodded.

Daniel whispered:

“They all worked together.”

Marcus looked toward the hospital entrance.

“Then where is Thomas?”

Nobody answered.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Everyone dropped.

Daniel grabbed Emily as she appeared from the corridor.

“Stay behind me.”

Another shot.

Glass shattered.

Michael pulled Margaret to the floor.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“Everyone down!”

A figure ran through the darkness.

Daniel chased him.

He reached the emergency staircase.

The man disappeared through a door.

Daniel followed.

He found Thomas standing at the end of the corridor.

His hands were raised.

“Daniel.”

Daniel aimed at him.

“You killed my father.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I didn't want to.”

“You injected him.”

“Yes.”

“You watched him die.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Thomas's face crumbled.

“No.”

He lowered his hands.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Thomas looked behind him.

“Your father was going to expose Margaret.”

“I know.”

“But he wasn't going to stop there.”

“What else?”

“He was going to expose the government officials who used the trust.”

Daniel froze.

Thomas continued:

“He had evidence that could have destroyed half the city.”

“That doesn't justify murder.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“But it explains why they were afraid.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who ordered you?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Margaret.”

“Who gave Margaret the order?”

Thomas looked terrified.

“Someone above her.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Thomas whispered:

“The original trustee.”

Silence.

“Who is that?”

Thomas looked directly at Michael.

“The trustee isn't a Carter.”

Michael's expression changed.

“Then who?”

Thomas opened his mouth.

Before he could answer—

a bullet struck his chest.

He collapsed.

Daniel caught him.

“Thomas!”

Blood spread across his shirt.

Thomas grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

“Don't trust…”

His voice faded.

“Don't trust who?”

Thomas's eyes moved toward the hallway.

“The person…”

He struggled to breathe.

“…who brought you here.”

Then he died.

Daniel slowly looked toward the hospital lobby.

Margaret was gone.

Evelyn was gone.

And Emily was gone.

Again.

“Emily?”

No answer.

Daniel's heart stopped.

He ran through the hospital.

“Emily!”

Michael followed.

“Daniel!”

Nothing.

Then Daniel saw something on the floor.

A small silver necklace.

Emily's necklace.

He picked it up.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

YOU WERE WARNED.

Another message followed.

SHE WAS NEVER THE TARGET.

Daniel stared.

Then the final message arrived.

YOU WERE.

His blood turned cold.

Someone had been planning this from the beginning.

The necklace.

The accusations.

The false videos.

The hidden will.

The hospital.

Every trap had been designed to move Daniel toward one place.

And now they had him exactly where they wanted him.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Your sister is alive.”

“Where is she?”

“You'll find her.”

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“The man your father trusted before he trusted anyone else.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“David had no one before Thomas.”

The caller laughed.

“You're wrong.”

“Who are you?”

The voice answered:

“Your father's firstborn.”

Daniel froze.

“Alexander is my father's firstborn.”

“No.”

The caller's voice became colder.

“Alexander was the second.”

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael stared back.

The caller continued:

“There was another son.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“A son nobody knows about.”

Then the line went dead.

Daniel stood motionless.

Michael slowly shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

Michael whispered:

“Then who am I?”

No one answered.

And somewhere beneath the hospital, Emily opened her eyes.

She was lying in a dark room.

A man stood beside her.

He leaned closer.

Emily recognized him.

Her face turned white.

“You.”

The man smiled.

“You finally remember me.”

Emily's voice trembled.

“But you're dead.”

He laughed softly.

“That's what they wanted everyone to believe.”

He leaned closer.

“My name is Alexander Carter.”

Emily stared.

And for the first time, she realized the greatest secret her family had buried was not who controlled the fortune.

It was how many children David Carter had actually left behind.
