Chapter 13 — The Woman Who Lost Everything

Chapter 13 — The Woman Who Lost Everything

Margaret had spent twenty-three years believing she had won.

She had controlled the records.

Controlled the money.

Controlled the people who knew the truth.

She had watched David disappear.

She had watched Evelyn vanish.

She had watched Emily grow up believing she had no family.

She had watched Michael become someone else's son.

And she had watched Daniel inherit everything while believing his father had died peacefully.

For twenty-three years, Margaret had sat behind locked doors and convinced herself that she was protecting the Carter legacy.

Now she stood alone in an abandoned hospital corridor.

And for the first time—

she was afraid.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

“Where is Emily?”

A man's voice replied.

“Safe.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Good.”

“You failed.”

“No.”

“You lost the will.”

“I can recover it.”

“You lost Thomas.”

“I can replace him.”

“You lost the mansion.”

“I still have the trust.”

The voice laughed.

“You don't.”

Margaret froze.

“What?”

“The trustees voted.”

Her face changed.

“When?”

“That is impossible.”

“It isn't.”

Margaret's hand tightened around the phone.

“Who authorized it?”

“All three heirs.”

She went silent.

“Daniel.”

“Emily.”

“And Alexander.”

Margaret's eyes widened.

“They found him.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

The voice disconnected.

Margaret stared at the phone.

For the first time in twenty-three years, she realized something terrifying.

She wasn't controlling the game anymore.

She was being hunted.

Daniel stood in the hospital lobby.

Thomas was dead.

Emily was missing.

Michael was barely speaking.

Marcus was injured.

Clara was crying.

And Margaret had vanished.

Daniel looked at the security footage.

“We need every camera.”

Marcus nodded.

“Already pulling them.”

“Find Emily.”

“I will.”

Daniel turned toward Michael.

“Are you okay?”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Am I okay?”

“No.”

Michael looked at the floor.

“I just learned my name isn't even mine.”

Daniel sat beside him.

“You're still my brother.”

Michael looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because blood doesn't decide everything.”

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

“That's what David said.”

Daniel nodded.

“He was right.”

Michael looked toward the elevator.

“What about Emily?”

“We'll find her.”

“And Alexander?”

Daniel paused.

“We find him too.”

Three floors beneath the hospital, Emily sat across from the man who claimed to be Alexander.

She stared at him.

“You were my father's first son.”

He nodded.

“Before Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Before Michael.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't anyone know?”

“Because David believed I was dead.”

“Were you?”

“Almost.”

Alexander leaned against the wall.

“When I was nine, Margaret arranged for me to disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because I was the first heir.”

Emily frowned.

“You were supposed to inherit?”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“I was supposed to activate the trust.”

“How?”

“By acknowledging the other heirs.”

Emily's eyes widened.

“So Margaret needed you gone.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“She sent me to a private institution under another name.”

“And David?”

“He tried to find me.”

“Did he?”

Alexander smiled sadly.

“He did.”

“What happened?”

“He was too late.”

Emily whispered:

“Then how did you survive?”

“Someone helped me.”

“Who?”

Alexander looked toward the door.

“Evelyn.”

Emily's breath caught.

“She found you?”

“She raised me for a while.”

“Then why did she leave?”

“Because she had to protect you.”

Emily looked down.

“So everyone was protecting everyone.”

“And destroying each other at the same time.”

Alexander nodded.

“That was the tragedy.”

Daniel finally found the hidden elevator.

It descended beneath the hospital.

Marcus checked the controls.

“No floor numbers.”

Daniel stepped inside.

“Then someone doesn't want us knowing where it goes.”

Michael followed.

Clara hesitated.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom, stay here.”

“No.”

She stepped into the elevator.

“I've spent twenty-three years losing my children.”

She looked at him.

“I'm not losing another tonight.”

The elevator descended.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

Two minutes.

Then it stopped.

The doors opened.

A corridor stretched into darkness.

Daniel walked forward.

At the end was a steel door.

He opened it.

Inside was a room filled with photographs.

Every photograph showed the same woman.

Margaret.

But the photographs spanned decades.

Beside her stood a man Daniel didn't recognize.

Marcus picked up one photograph.

“This is the original trustee.”

Daniel stared.

“Who?”

Marcus turned it over.

A name was written on the back.

Samuel Carter.

Daniel frowned.

“Who is Samuel?”

Clara went pale.

“My grandfather.”

Daniel stared.

“He's dead.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Thirty years ago.”

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“He died ten years before David.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why is he here?”

Marcus pointed.

The photograph was dated only six years old.

Silence.

Michael whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Daniel looked at the man in the photograph.

He was older.

But unmistakably alive.

Samuel Carter.

The original trustee.

The man who supposedly died thirty years ago.

Then the lights came on.

A voice spoke from behind them.

“You finally found me.”

Daniel turned.

An elderly man stood in the doorway.

Samuel.

Alive.

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Stay where you are.”

Samuel smiled.

“You look exactly like your father.”

Daniel's voice was cold.

“You've been alive all this time.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because dying was easier than explaining.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

“You created this.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Samuel looked toward Clara.

“Ask your mother.”

Everyone turned.

Clara began crying.

Daniel stared.

“Mom?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

Samuel laughed softly.

“You knew enough.”

Clara's voice broke.

“I was trying to protect them.”

“From what?”

“From you.”

Samuel's expression hardened.

“Then you failed.”

Meanwhile, Margaret entered the old Carter mansion.

She believed the house was empty.

She was wrong.

Vanessa was waiting.

Margaret stopped.

“You.”

Vanessa stood slowly.

“I know what you did.”

Margaret laughed.

“You know nothing.”

“I know about the trust.”

“Everyone knows about the trust.”

“I know about Thomas.”

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“I know about David.”

“You should be careful.”

“I know about Emily.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“You really don't understand what you're dealing with.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I understand enough.”

She held up her phone.

Margaret saw the recording.

Her face changed.

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

“Delete it.”

“No.”

“I can destroy you.”

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“You already did.”

Margaret stared.

“You made me betray people.”

“I gave you choices.”

“You threatened my brother.”

“You chose money.”

“I chose survival.”

Margaret's voice became cold.

“Same thing.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

She stepped backward.

“I chose wrong.”

Margaret reached for her.

The front doors opened.

Police flooded the foyer.

Margaret froze.

Vanessa had already called them.

A detective stepped forward.

“Margaret Carter.”

Margaret looked around.

“You have no idea who you're arresting.”

The detective smiled.

“We know exactly who you are.”

He placed handcuffs around her wrists.

Margaret laughed.

“This won't hold.”

The detective tightened them.

“You're being charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, obstruction, attempted murder, and multiple counts of identity manipulation.”

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“Who authorized this?”

The detective answered:

“Daniel Carter.”

Margaret stared.

“Daniel doesn't have that authority.”

“Maybe not.”

The detective looked toward the doorway.

“But the three heirs do.”

Margaret's face fell.

For the first time—

she understood.

The trust had already been activated.

Daniel confronted Samuel beneath the hospital.

“Where is Emily?”

Samuel shook his head.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“You won't find her until you understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Samuel looked at him.

“You still think this is about Margaret.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“She was only a servant.”

Michael stepped forward.

“She killed people.”

“Yes.”

“But she didn't start this.”

“Then who did?”

Samuel looked at him.

“You.”

Michael's expression changed.

“What?”

Samuel smiled.

“You were born with the power to activate the trust.”

“I didn't know.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel stared at Samuel.

“Why did you hide him?”

“Because your father asked me.”

“Why?”

“Because David knew what the trust would do.”

“What?”

“It would expose everyone.”

Samuel walked toward the wall.

He touched a hidden panel.

The room opened.

Beyond it was a vault.

Inside were thousands of files.

Politicians.

Corporations.

Judges.

Banks.

Secret accounts.

Daniel stared.

“This is everything.”

Samuel nodded.

“The Carter family built an empire.”

“And you controlled it.”

“No.”

Samuel shook his head.

“I protected it.”

“From whom?”

“From the people who wanted to weaponize it.”

Daniel stared.

“You were the original trustee.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did David rebel?”

“Because he wanted to destroy it.”

“And you stopped him.”

“Yes.”

“You killed him.”

Samuel looked away.

“No.”

“Who did?”

Samuel's eyes filled with regret.

“David's own son.”

Daniel froze.

“My brother?”

“No.”

Samuel looked at him.

“His firstborn.”

“Alexander?”

Samuel nodded.

Daniel's face went pale.

“Alexander killed Father?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Samuel whispered:

“The man pretending to be Alexander.”

Silence.

Daniel understood.

The entire story had been manipulated.

The man Emily was with wasn't Alexander.

Someone had taken his identity.

Someone had been using the family name to gain access to the trust.

Samuel continued:

“And that man has Emily.”

Emily opened her eyes.

She was no longer alone.

The man calling himself Alexander stood beside the door.

Another person entered.

Emily stared.

Her heart stopped.

“Daniel?”

The man smiled.

But something was wrong.

He didn't move like Daniel.

Didn't sound like Daniel.

He simply wore Daniel's face.

Emily stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The impostor smiled.

“Your brother.”

“No.”

He laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He removed a thin mask.

Emily screamed.

The face beneath it belonged to a man she had never seen.

But the voice was familiar.

It was the same voice from the phone.

The same voice that had manipulated everyone.

He smiled.

“My name is Adrian Vale.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“Because your father left something that belongs to me.”

“What?”

“The Founder's Trust.”

Emily shook her head.

“You can't have it.”

“I already do.”

“How?”

Adrian pointed toward the door.

“Because Daniel is coming.”

Emily's face changed.

“And when he arrives…”

Adrian smiled.

“…you will accuse him of killing me.”

Emily stared.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I'm patient.”

Hours later, Daniel returned to the mansion.

Margaret was in custody.

Thomas was dead.

Samuel had disappeared.

Marcus was recovering.

But Emily was still missing.

Daniel stood alone in the foyer.

Then his phone rang.

A video appeared.

Emily was sitting in a dark room.

Adrian stood behind her.

Daniel's heart stopped.

“Emily.”

She looked at the camera.

“Daniel.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where are you?”

Adrian stepped into view.

“Welcome back.”

Daniel recognized the voice.

His blood turned cold.

“You.”

Adrian smiled.

“You've been looking for me.”

“Let her go.”

“Not yet.”

“What do you want?”

“The trust.”

“You can't have it.”

“I don't need it.”

Adrian leaned toward Emily.

“I need you to activate it.”

Daniel understood.

“You need all three heirs.”

“Yes.”

“And you're missing one.”

Adrian smiled.

“No.”

He turned the camera.

Michael was sitting in another chair.

Bound.

Daniel froze.

Then another screen appeared.

Alexander.

Alive.

And beside him—

Evelyn.

Daniel's voice disappeared.

Adrian spoke softly.

“Now you have a choice.”

“Come alone.”

“Bring the original will.”

“And bring the key.”

“If you don't…”

The screen changed.

Emily's face.

Michael's.

Alexander's.

Evelyn's.

Adrian smiled.

“…you lose your entire family.”

The video ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

Then Marcus walked into the foyer.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at him.

“We know where they are.”

“Where?”

Daniel picked up his coat.

“The Carter estate.”

Marcus frowned.

“But we're standing in it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not this one.”

He looked toward the old family portrait.

“There's another Carter house.”

Marcus understood.

“The original estate.”

Daniel nodded.

“And that's where this ends.”

But neither man noticed the figure standing upstairs.

Clara.

She was holding a phone.

And on the phone was a message from Adrian.

YOU HAVE DONE WELL.

Clara's hand trembled.

Then she typed:

I'M SORRY.

The reply came immediately.

Don't be.

You saved your children.

Clara closed her eyes.

And for the first time, Daniel's mother admitted the truth to herself.

She had not been protecting her children.

She had been protecting the secret.

May you like

And now that secret was about to destroy the last thing she had left.

Her family.
