Chapter 7 — Vanessa’s Second Trap

Chapter 7 — Vanessa’s Second Trap

Michael's appearance should have answered everything.

Instead, it created a hundred new questions.

Daniel stared at the young man standing at the end of the hallway.

For twenty-one years, he had believed he was an only child.

Then, within forty-eight hours, he had discovered a sister he had never known existed and a brother everyone had deliberately erased.

And somehow, Vanessa Rossi stood at the center of it all.

Michael looked at Daniel without smiling.

“You look just like him.”

Daniel's throat tightened.

“Like Father?”

Michael nodded.

“Especially when you're angry.”

Emily stepped forward.

“Michael?”

His eyes moved to her.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Then he whispered:

“Emily.”

She swallowed.

“You knew my name?”

“I've known your name my entire life.”

“Then why didn't you find me?”

Michael's expression darkened.

“Because I was told you were dead.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“So was I.”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“They wanted us to hate each other.”

“Who?”

“You already know.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Eleanor.”

Michael nodded.

“But Eleanor wasn't working alone.”

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Vanessa lowered her head.

Daniel noticed.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Vanessa looked up.

“I didn't know everything.”

“You knew enough to frame Emily.”

“I was trying to protect Michael.”

Emily's expression hardened.

“You nearly destroyed me.”

“I know.”

“You slapped me.”

Vanessa looked away.

“I know.”

“You lied to Daniel.”

“I know.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Then don't tell me you were protecting anyone.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.”

Emily shook her head.

“So was I.”

The words landed harder than a scream.

They returned to the mansion before dawn.

Michael sat in the library.

Clara couldn't stop looking at him.

She touched his face.

“I thought you were gone.”

Michael's expression softened.

“I thought you were dead.”

Clara pulled him into her arms.

For a moment, the room became quiet.

Emily watched them.

Daniel watched Emily.

And Marcus stood near the door, guarding all of them.

It should have been a moment of reunion.

But Daniel couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Too many pieces had fallen into place too quickly.

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you bring Michael to the club?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“He contacted me.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“He wanted information about Eleanor.”

“And you helped him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why frame Emily?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Eleanor gave me an ultimatum.”

“What ultimatum?”

“She told me that if I didn't destroy Emily's reputation, Michael would disappear.”

Michael looked up.

“She wasn't lying.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“You knew?”

Michael nodded.

“She had people following me.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor believed I knew where the original trust documents were.”

Daniel frowned.

“What documents?”

Michael looked at him.

“The documents that prove who owns the Carter fortune.”

Silence.

Daniel slowly sat down.

“Where are they?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Then why is she afraid of you?”

“Because my father found them.”

“Robert Rossi?”

“No.”

Michael looked at Clara.

“David.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“My father had the documents?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Michael's expression became serious.

“He gave them to someone.”

“Who?”

Michael looked at Emily.

“Your mother.”

Clara's face changed.

Daniel turned.

“Mom?”

Clara shook her head.

“I don't have them.”

Michael frowned.

“You did.”

“Not anymore.”

“Then who has them?”

Clara's voice trembled.

“I don't know.”

Daniel stood.

“Then we find out.”

By noon, the mansion was surrounded by reporters.

Someone had leaked the necklace story.

News vans blocked the gates.

Cameras pointed toward the house.

The headline spreading online was brutal:

BILLIONAIRE'S MYSTERY MAID ACCUSED OF DIAMOND THEFT

Another headline appeared minutes later:

CARTER HEIR PROTECTS SUSPECTED THIEF

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Who leaked this?”

Marcus answered:

“We're tracing it.”

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Not me.”

Michael stood.

“It's Eleanor.”

“How?”

“She has contacts everywhere.”

Daniel's phone rang.

His lawyer.

“Daniel, we have a serious problem.”

“What?”

“The police have received a formal complaint.”

“Against whom?”

“Emily.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“For the necklace?”

“No.”

“For something much worse.”

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Two detectives entered the mansion.

Daniel met them in the foyer.

“What is this about?”

Detective Harris showed him a warrant.

“Search authorization.”

“For what?”

“Stolen property.”

“What property?”

“A collection of jewelry belonging to Vanessa Rossi.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked genuinely shocked.

“I didn't report anything.”

Harris frowned.

“You didn't?”

“No.”

The detective checked his paperwork.

“The complaint was filed under your name.”

Vanessa's face went pale.

Daniel understood immediately.

Someone was using her identity.

“Who signed it?”

Harris looked at the document.

“Vanessa Rossi.”

She shook her head.

“That isn't my signature.”

The detective looked at her.

“We'll determine that.”

Then the search began.

Every bedroom.

Every closet.

Every drawer.

Emily's room was searched first.

Daniel protested.

“She has nothing to do with this.”

Harris replied:

“Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.”

Two officers opened Emily's wardrobe.

Nothing.

They searched the desk.

Nothing.

Then one officer opened the bottom drawer.

He stopped.

“Detective.”

Harris approached.

The officer pulled out a velvet jewelry case.

Emily stared.

“I've never seen that.”

Harris opened it.

Inside was a diamond bracelet.

Vanessa gasped.

“That belongs to me.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Harris looked at Emily.

“Would you like to explain?”

Emily shook her head.

“I didn't put that there.”

Harris opened the case further.

There was another item.

A gold ring.

Vanessa's.

Then a third.

A pair of earrings.

Also Vanessa's.

Emily looked horrified.

“Someone planted those.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Close the drawer.”

The detective ignored him.

“We need to take her in.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“She isn't going anywhere.”

Harris looked at him.

“Mr. Carter, this is now a criminal investigation.”

Marcus moved forward.

Daniel stopped him.

“Wait.”

He looked at Emily.

“Don't say anything.”

Emily nodded.

Harris reached for her arm.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

It was the chief of police.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“We've received additional evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“A video.”

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Of what?”

“Emily stealing Vanessa's jewelry.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

She was pale.

“Send it.”

“I already did.”

Daniel opened the file.

The footage showed Emily entering Vanessa's bedroom.

Opening a drawer.

Taking jewelry.

Placing it inside her own bag.

The video was perfect.

Too perfect.

Daniel watched it twice.

Then Marcus leaned closer.

“There's something wrong.”

“What?”

“The timestamp.”

Daniel looked.

The video had been recorded at 2:17 a.m.

But Emily's key-card records showed she had been in the laundry room at that exact time.

Daniel looked at the footage again.

The woman on screen looked like Emily.

Same uniform.

Same hair.

Same posture.

But Daniel noticed one detail.

Her left wrist.

The woman in the video wore a silver bracelet.

Emily never did.

“Pause.”

Marcus stopped the video.

Daniel zoomed in.

The bracelet had a small symbol.

A black rose.

Vanessa looked at it.

Her face changed.

“I know that symbol.”

“Where?”

“Eleanor.”

Daniel turned toward the detectives.

“This footage is fake.”

Harris frowned.

“We'll verify it.”

“You should.”

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“Because whoever made it wanted you to see exactly what they wanted.”

The detective looked skeptical.

“Mr. Carter—”

“Check the original server.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“We can.”

Harris nodded reluctantly.

“Do it.”

Marcus left.

Five minutes later, he returned.

His expression was grim.

“The video exists.”

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“But?”

“It was uploaded from an external device.”

“Whose?”

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Her phone.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“The file was uploaded from your phone at 2:21 a.m.”

“I was asleep.”

“You were here.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You were in the mansion.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In my bedroom.”

“Anyone with you?”

“No.”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Then someone used her phone.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Or Vanessa is lying.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't do this.”

Michael suddenly spoke.

“She's telling the truth.”

Everyone turned.

“How do you know?”

“Because I saw her phone.”

“When?”

“Last night.”

“Where?”

Michael hesitated.

“In the library.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Why were you there?”

Michael didn't answer.

“Michael.”

He looked away.

“I was searching for the trust documents.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You went through my library?”

“Yes.”

“Did you find them?”

“No.”

“Did you find anything else?”

Michael's silence answered the question.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you find?”

Michael looked at Emily.

“A letter.”

“From whom?”

“Your father.”

Daniel froze.

“Where is it?”

Michael pulled it from his jacket.

Daniel opened it.

The first line made his blood run cold.

If my children are ever reunited, the person who betrayed me will try to separate them again.

Daniel continued.

Do not trust the woman who claims she wants the family fortune.

He looked at Vanessa.

She stared back.

Then he read the final sentence.

She isn't the real enemy.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Then Vanessa screamed.

“Daniel!”

Everyone turned.

She was staring toward the staircase.

A small red light blinked beneath the railing.

Marcus pulled his weapon.

“Everyone down!”

The light flashed.

A tiny camera.

Hidden inside the mansion.

Watching them.

Marcus ripped it from the wall.

He examined it.

“This isn't ours.”

Daniel looked at the device.

“Then someone has been watching us.”

Marcus nodded.

“For months.”

That night, Vanessa disappeared.

No one noticed at first.

Her bedroom door was open.

The window was broken.

Her phone lay on the floor.

Daniel rushed inside.

“Where is she?”

Marcus checked the room.

“No blood.”

“Then she wasn't taken by force.”

Michael picked up the phone.

A message was open.

COME ALONE.

Another message:

BRING THE TRUST DOCUMENTS.

Daniel stared.

“Where did this come from?”

Michael checked the number.

“Unknown.”

Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

If you want Vanessa alive, come to the old train station.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Call the police.”

Marcus nodded.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

Michael stopped him.

“You can't go alone.”

“I won't.”

“I meant me.”

Daniel looked at him.

Michael continued:

“She is my sister too.”

Emily stepped forward.

“And Vanessa saved me once.”

Daniel frowned.

“When?”

Emily looked at him.

“Before she framed me.”

Everyone became silent.

“She warned me about Eleanor.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Then we bring everyone.”

The old train station was abandoned.

Fog covered the tracks.

Daniel arrived with Marcus, Michael, Emily, and Clara.

A single light flickered above the platform.

Vanessa was sitting on a bench.

Her hands were tied.

Daniel approached.

“Vanessa.”

She looked up.

“Don't come closer.”

Daniel stopped.

“Who did this?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“She was here.”

“Who?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Eleanor.”

A loudspeaker crackled.

Then a woman's voice filled the station.

“You should have listened to me, Daniel.”

Daniel looked around.

“Show yourself.”

“You still think you can save them all.”

“Come out.”

“You don't understand what Emily is.”

Emily stepped forward.

“What am I?”

Silence.

Then Eleanor laughed.

“You're the reason your father died.”

Emily froze.

Daniel shouted:

“Don't listen to her!”

But Eleanor continued.

“Your father chose you over everything.”

“You were supposed to disappear.”

“You were supposed to die.”

Clara screamed:

“Don't!”

Eleanor's voice became colder.

“But David couldn't do it.”

Daniel's fists clenched.

“What do you want?”

“The trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“Where is it?”

“You have it.”

“No.”

“You do.”

A light illuminated Vanessa.

Beside her was a briefcase.

Eleanor spoke again.

“Open it.”

Daniel approached.

He opened the case.

Inside was the original trust document.

The one everyone had been searching for.

Daniel stared.

“How did you get this?”

Eleanor laughed.

“Because the whole time you were searching for the document…”

A pause.

“…you never realized it was inside Emily's room.”

Emily looked horrified.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What?”

Eleanor's voice echoed through the station.

“The necklace was only the first trap.”

“The jewelry was the second.”

“And now…”

A red laser appeared on Daniel's chest.

“…the third trap is about to close.”

Marcus shouted:

“DOWN!”

Gunfire exploded through the station.

Everyone dropped.

Vanessa screamed.

Emily grabbed Clara.

Michael pulled Daniel behind a concrete pillar.

Marcus returned fire.

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

When they came back on—

Vanessa was gone.

So was the briefcase.

And on the platform floor lay a single piece of paper.

Daniel picked it up.

There was one sentence written across it.

THE NEXT PERSON TO DISAPPEAR WILL BE EMILY.

Daniel looked at his sister.

She was standing beside Clara, trembling.

He stepped toward her.

“No one is taking you.”

Emily looked at him.

“You promise?”

Daniel nodded.

“I promise.”

But somewhere in the darkness beyond the station, someone was watching them.

And this time, the person behind the trap wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone Daniel had trusted his entire life.

Someone who knew exactly how he thought.

May you like

Someone who knew exactly where he would look.

And someone who had just realized that Daniel was getting dangerously close to the truth.
