Chapter 3 — The Woman Behind the Necklace

Chapter 3 — The Woman Behind the Necklace
By sunrise, Daniel had stopped believing in coincidences.
The necklace had been planted.
The security system had been accessed with his dead father's code.
Emily's mother had once worked for his father.
A missing child had been mentioned in his father's private documents.
And now Emily—his supposedly ordinary housekeeper—had revealed that her mother had specifically instructed her to apply for a job at the Carter mansion.
Twenty-three years earlier.
Before Daniel had ever known she existed.
He stood alone in his father's study, staring at the old photograph.
The baby in Clara Bennett's arms had been wrapped in a white blanket.
A tiny silver bracelet circled the infant's wrist.
Daniel zoomed in.
There was a letter engraved on the bracelet.
E.
Emily.
His fingers tightened around the photograph.
A soft knock sounded.
“Come in.”
Marcus entered.
“You haven't slept.”
“Neither have you.”
Marcus placed two coffees on the desk.
“I found something.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“Vanessa's phone records.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Show me.”
Marcus placed a tablet on the desk.
“For the last six weeks, Vanessa has been communicating with a number registered to a private security company.”
“Who owns it?”
“That's the problem.”
“Why?”
“The company doesn't have a real owner on file.”
Daniel frowned.
“Shell company?”
“Yes.”
“Who has she been calling?”
“Mostly one number.”
“Whose?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Your father's old personal assistant.”
Daniel froze.
“Peter Hale?”
“He's supposed to be living in Switzerland.”
“Supposed to be?”
Marcus nodded.
“According to immigration records, Peter hasn't left the country in three years.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Find him.”
“I already did.”
Marcus slid a photograph across the desk.
Peter Hale.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Daniel looked at the address.
A small apartment in Queens.
“Let's go.”
They arrived two hours later.
Peter Hale opened the door after the third knock.
The moment he saw Daniel, he tried to close it.
Marcus stopped him.
“Peter.”
“I can't help you.”
Daniel pushed the door open.
“You're going to.”
Peter backed away.
“I have nothing to do with this.”
“Then why have you been talking to Vanessa?”
Peter's face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”
Peter sat down heavily.
“I should have left years ago.”
“What did Vanessa want?”
Peter looked at Marcus.
Then Daniel.
“The necklace.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because she needed proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Peter swallowed.
“That Emily had stolen something from the family.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Why would she need that?”
“Because she knew you wouldn't believe her without evidence.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Vanessa wasn't trying to steal the necklace.”
“No.”
“She was trying to destroy Emily.”
Peter nodded.
“Why?”
Peter looked away.
“Because Emily is the last person alive who can prove what happened twenty-three years ago.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“What happened?”
Peter closed his eyes.
“Your father had a daughter.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You already know that.”
“Who was she?”
Peter looked directly at him.
“Emily.”
Silence.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
He had suspected it.
But suspicion was different from hearing it spoken aloud.
“Why was she hidden?”
Peter shook his head.
“She wasn't supposed to be hidden.”
“Then what happened?”
“Your grandmother ordered Clara to leave.”
Daniel stared.
“My grandmother?”
“She discovered the affair.”
“And?”
“She threatened Clara.”
“With what?”
Peter's voice dropped.
“Her child's life.”
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
“My grandmother would never—”
“She did.”
Peter stood.
“Your father wanted to acknowledge Emily.”
“Why didn't he?”
“Because your grandmother controlled the company.”
Daniel remembered the old documents.
The trust.
The shares.
The board.
His father's dependence.
Peter continued.
“She told him that if he claimed Emily publicly, she would destroy Clara.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“So my father chose the company.”
Peter shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Daniel.
“He chose Emily.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“He secretly arranged for Clara to disappear.”
Peter reached into a drawer.
He removed another envelope.
“Your father paid someone to protect them.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a receipt.
A bank transfer.
Twenty-three years old.
The recipient was a woman named Mara Bennett.
Emily's aunt.
Daniel stared.
“He didn't abandon them.”
“No.”
“He protected them.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Clara die believing she had to keep Emily away from us?”
Peter looked down.
“Because your father never got the chance to tell her the truth.”
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?”
Peter's eyes filled with regret.
“He was killed.”
Daniel froze.
“My father died in a car accident.”
Peter nodded.
“That is what the newspapers said.”
“And what really happened?”
Peter didn't answer.
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Tell me.”
Peter whispered:
“His brakes were cut.”
Back at the mansion, Vanessa sat alone in her bedroom.
Her hands shook as she stared at her phone.
A message appeared.
DID YOU GET THE FILE?
She typed:
No. Daniel has it.
The reply came immediately.
Then you failed.
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
I tried.
You were supposed to make Emily look like a thief.
The camera exposed me.
Then fix it.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
How?
A final message appeared.
Make Daniel believe she killed his father.
Vanessa dropped the phone.
“No.”
The idea was monstrous.
But the sender wasn't asking.
They were ordering.
Emily was in the laundry room when Daniel found her.
She looked up.
“You're back.”
“Yes.”
“Did you find anything?”
Daniel paused.
“Yes.”
Her face tightened.
“What?”
“Your mother worked for my father.”
“I know.”
“She didn't leave voluntarily.”
Emily stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
“She was forced to disappear.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“By whom?”
Daniel struggled with the words.
“My grandmother.”
Emily sat down.
“My mother always said there was someone she was afraid of.”
“Did she ever tell you why?”
“No.”
“Did she ever mention my father?”
Emily hesitated.
“Once.”
“What did she say?”
“She said he wasn't a bad man.”
Daniel looked away.
Emily continued.
“She said he tried to find us.”
Daniel turned back.
“Did she tell you anything else?”
“She said he failed.”
Daniel swallowed.
“He didn't.”
Emily looked confused.
“What?”
“He tried to protect you.”
Emily stared.
“How do you know?”
“Because I found the documents.”
She stood.
“Where?”
“In my father's study.”
Emily's eyes widened.
“Then why did someone send me that photograph?”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What photograph?”
Emily pulled it from her pocket.
The one with the warning.
Daniel read the message on the back.
You are not who they told you.
He turned it over.
The photograph had been altered.
A small portion of the original image had been cut away.
Daniel examined it.
“Someone removed part of this.”
“What was there?”
“I don't know.”
Marcus entered suddenly.
“Daniel.”
He held up his phone.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“Vanessa left the mansion.”
“Where is she going?”
“We don't know.”
Marcus looked at Emily.
“She took something from your room.”
Emily's face went pale.
“What?”
“Your mother's photograph.”
Emily rushed upstairs.
Her room had been searched.
The mattress was overturned.
Drawers were open.
Clothes lay scattered across the floor.
The photograph was gone.
Daniel stared at the mess.
“She knew.”
Emily whispered:
“She knew what it meant.”
Daniel nodded.
“Now we know what she was looking for.”
“What?”
He picked up a small piece of paper from the floor.
It had been torn from the back of the photograph.
There were three words visible.
Ask about Clara.
That evening, Daniel confronted Vanessa.
She was waiting in the library.
She didn't look surprised.
“You know.”
Daniel closed the door behind him.
“I know enough.”
Vanessa smiled weakly.
“Then you know I didn't do this alone.”
“Who?”
She shook her head.
“I can't.”
“You framed Emily.”
“Yes.”
“You stole the necklace.”
“Yes.”
“You searched her room.”
Vanessa looked away.
“Yes.”
“And you knew she was Clara Bennett's daughter.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel's voice became colder.
“How long?”
“Three months.”
“Who told you?”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Your grandmother.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“My grandmother is dead.”
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
“So was your father.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Your grandmother isn't dead.”
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't speak.
Vanessa watched his reaction.
“She has been alive this entire time.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Don't lie.”
“I swear.”
“Then why did she contact you?”
“Because she knew I wanted to marry you.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“And she offered you something.”
Vanessa looked down.
“Everything.”
“What did she promise?”
“The company.”
Daniel stared.
“She promised me control of the Carter empire.”
“And in return?”
Vanessa whispered:
“I had to make Emily disappear.”
Daniel's face became expressionless.
“Why?”
“Because your grandmother believes Emily is the only person who can inherit the company.”
Daniel frowned.
“She can't.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand the old trust.”
She reached into her handbag.
“Your father changed it before he died.”
She placed a document on the table.
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
There it was.
A clause.
If Daniel died without biological heirs, the company would pass to the child of his father's bloodline.
Emily.
Daniel looked up.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because your grandmother has spent twenty-three years making sure nobody knew Emily existed.”
“And the necklace?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“It was supposed to be the beginning.”
“Of what?”
“Your public destruction.”
Daniel stared.
Vanessa continued.
“She wanted everyone to believe you were protecting a thief.”
“Why?”
“So when Emily disappeared, nobody would ask questions.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“And you agreed?”
Vanessa cried.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why should I believe you now?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because she has already decided I'm disposable.”
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a photograph.
It showed an older woman standing beside a black car.
Daniel's breath caught.
His grandmother.
Alive.
And standing beside her—
was Peter Hale.
But that wasn't the worst part.
In the background stood another person.
A woman.
Emily's mother.
Clara.
Alive.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“Where was this taken?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Six months ago.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“Clara is alive?”
Vanessa nodded.
“And your grandmother has her.”
Upstairs, Emily stood by the window.
She looked out into the darkness.
Her phone vibrated.
One final message appeared.
YOUR MOTHER IS ALIVE.
Emily stopped breathing.
Then another message arrived.
AND SHE'S NOT THE ONLY SECRET DANIEL'S FAMILY BURIED.
Emily stared at the words.
A car slowly passed beneath her window.
Its headlights briefly illuminated the garden.
For one second, Emily saw a woman standing near the iron gate.
Silver hair.
Black coat.
Watching the mansion.
Watching her.
Emily stepped toward the window.
The woman turned.
Their eyes met.
Then the woman smiled.
Emily knew that face.
She had seen it in her mother's old photographs.
It was the face of the woman her mother had spent twenty-three years fearing.
Daniel's grandmother.
Alive.
Watching.
And waiting.
The diamond necklace had never been about jewelry.
It had been a warning.
And now Emily understood the real message.
Someone wasn't trying to steal her future.
Someone was trying to erase her past.
May you like
And they were willing to destroy anyone who stood between them and the Carter fortune.
Including Daniel.
