Chapter 1 – The Fall

Chapter 1 – The Fall

"You should never have come back here."

Eleanor Whitmore's icy voice echoed through the grand ballroom, cutting through the soft music and cheerful conversations like a knife.

Crystal chandeliers illuminated the marble staircase that dominated the center of the mansion. The annual Whitmore Charity Gala was supposed to celebrate another year of success for one of the city's wealthiest families. Politicians, celebrities, and business leaders filled the room, raising glasses of champagne beneath banners proclaiming generosity and honor.

Only one person didn't belong.

Claire Carter.

Dressed in a simple navy-blue catering uniform, she balanced a silver tray of champagne glasses while trying to avoid attracting attention. This was just another temporary job—one more shift to help pay her overdue rent and the mounting medical bills left behind after her adoptive mother's long illness.

She had no idea that stepping into Whitmore Manor would change her life forever.

As Claire turned toward the staircase, she nearly collided with Eleanor Whitmore.

The elegant woman, draped in a shimmering emerald gown and adorned with diamonds, looked Claire up and down with open contempt.

"I warned the event manager not to hire careless staff," Eleanor said loudly enough for nearby guests to hear.

Claire lowered her eyes respectfully.

"I'm sorry if I got in your way, ma'am."

"You didn't just get in my way."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"You walked into a place where you don't belong."

Several guests exchanged curious glances.

Claire tightened her grip on the tray.

"I'll leave your way immediately."

She tried to step aside.

Eleanor suddenly grabbed her wrist.

"Let go of me," Claire whispered.

Instead of releasing her, Eleanor squeezed harder.

Her eyes were filled with something far stranger than arrogance.

Fear.

Claire frowned.

"Have we... met before?"

For the briefest moment, Eleanor's face turned pale.

Then the cold expression returned.

"You should never have come back here."

Claire didn't understand.

"What are you talking about?"

Eleanor leaned close enough that only Claire could hear.

"You were supposed to disappear forever."

Before Claire could react—

Eleanor shoved her with both hands.

"No!"

Claire stumbled backward.

The tray flew into the air.

Crystal glasses shattered across the marble floor.

Her heels slipped on the polished edge of the staircase.

She reached desperately for the handrail.

Missed.

The world spun.

She crashed down the stairs, striking each step before landing heavily on the marble below.

A horrified scream echoed through the ballroom.

"Oh my God, she pushed her!"

Guests rushed toward the staircase as musicians stopped playing.

The orchestra fell silent.

Someone dropped a champagne bottle that exploded against the floor.

Claire struggled to breathe.

A sharp pain spread through her ribs.

Her vision blurred beneath the dazzling lights overhead.

She heard dozens of voices speaking at once.

"Call an ambulance!"

"Don't move her!"

"Someone help!"

Then another voice rose above the chaos.

"Ethan!"

A tall man in a tailored black tuxedo pushed through the crowd.

Without hesitation, Ethan Whitmore dropped to his knees beside Claire.

His expensive jacket brushed against the broken glass as he gently lifted her head into his arms.

"I've got you," he said, his voice shaking. "I've got you."

Claire forced her eyes open.

Everything looked hazy.

"Ethan..."

"I'm here."

She gasped for air.

"I... can't breathe..."

"No."

He carefully brushed the hair away from her face.

"Look at me."

She tried.

"Stay with me."

His hands trembled as he removed his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

"Someone call the police!" he shouted.

"I already have!" a guest answered.

Across the room, Eleanor remained frozen at the top of the staircase.

She stared at Claire with a mixture of panic and disbelief.

"This... this wasn't supposed to happen."

A nearby socialite looked at her in horror.

"You pushed her."

"It was an accident!"

"No."

The woman shook her head.

"We all saw it."

Eleanor glanced around the ballroom.

More than two hundred witnesses were staring at her.

Her breathing became uneven.

Then her eyes darted toward the security cameras mounted in each corner of the hall.

"No..."

She whispered the word almost to herself.

"It can't be."

Just then...

Every light inside the mansion flickered.

The music system abruptly shut down.

The giant LED screen prepared for the evening's charity presentation slowly descended from the ceiling.

Guests looked at one another in confusion.

"No one touched the controls," the event manager murmured.

The screen flashed once.

Twice.

Then security footage filled the display.

The timestamp read:

7:42 PM — Fifteen Minutes Earlier.

The ballroom fell completely silent.

Everyone turned to watch.

No one realized that what they were about to see would expose a secret buried for more than twenty-five years...
