Chapter 2 – The Missing Evidence

Chapter 2 – The Missing Evidence

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

More than two hundred guests stared at the giant LED screen hanging above the marble staircase.

The security footage began to play.

The timestamp read:

7:42 P.M.

Claire entered the ballroom through the service entrance, carrying a silver tray filled with champagne glasses. She smiled politely at another waitress before walking toward the reception area.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing suspicious.

Then the camera switched to another angle.

Eleanor Whitmore stood near the grand staircase, greeting important guests.

The moment Claire appeared in the distance, Eleanor stopped smiling.

She froze.

Her champagne glass slipped slightly in her hand.

One of her closest friends noticed.

"Eleanor? Are you alright?"

Eleanor never answered.

Her eyes remained fixed on Claire.

She whispered something that the camera couldn't record.

The guests watched in stunned silence.

Someone near the back of the ballroom spoke first.

"She knew her."

Another guest nodded.

"She recognized that waitress."

Ethan slowly stood beside Claire.

His jaw tightened.

"Eleanor..."

He looked toward his aunt.

"Why were you staring at her like that?"

Eleanor's face had turned pale.

"I wasn't."

"The cameras say otherwise."

"I don't remember."

Her voice trembled.

"It happened so fast."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The video suddenly froze.

The image distorted.

Horizontal lines flashed across the screen.

Then...

Black.

The ballroom lights remained on, but the recording was gone.

"What happened?" someone shouted.

The event manager hurried to the control booth.

"My system isn't responding!"

The head of security pushed through the crowd.

"Nobody touch anything."

He turned toward his staff.

"Lock every exit."

Within seconds, the massive oak doors were sealed.

No one would leave until the police arrived.

A Critical Minute

Detective Lucas Bennett arrived twenty minutes later.

He listened to witness statements while forensic officers photographed the staircase.

Claire had already been taken to the hospital.

Ethan refused to leave her side until the ambulance doors closed.

Now he stood in the ballroom, answering questions.

Bennett looked toward the security room.

"I want every camera."

The chief technician hesitated.

"There's a problem."

"What problem?"

"The recording from 7:43 to 7:44..."

He swallowed hard.

"...doesn't exist."

The detective frowned.

"What do you mean, it doesn't exist?"

"It was deleted."

"Deleted after the incident?"

The technician shook his head.

"No."

"It disappeared while everyone was watching."

Silence filled the room.

Bennett slowly removed his notebook.

"That's impossible."

"It should be."

"But someone remotely accessed our server."

He pointed toward the monitor.

"They erased exactly sixty-two seconds."

Only one minute.

The exact minute Eleanor pushed Claire.

The Hospital

Claire slowly opened her eyes beneath the bright lights of the emergency room.

Everything hurt.

Machines beeped softly around her.

She tried to sit up.

A nurse gently stopped her.

"Please don't move."

"My..."

Claire struggled to speak.

"My chest..."

"You have several bruised ribs."

The nurse smiled reassuringly.

"But you're lucky."

Before Claire could answer, the emergency physician entered holding several test results.

He looked relieved.

"Miss Carter..."

"I have good news."

Claire looked confused.

"What is it?"

"You weren't seriously injured."

He paused.

"But there's something you need to know."

The room became strangely quiet.

"You are approximately nine weeks pregnant."

Claire's eyes widened.

"What?"

The doctor nodded gently.

"The baby appears stable."

For several seconds she couldn't speak.

Pregnant.

She instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.

Tears filled her eyes.

Outside the room, Ethan had overheard every word.

He closed his eyes in disbelief.

Then quietly whispered,

"I'm going to protect both of you."

Eleanor's Panic

Back at Whitmore Manor, Eleanor locked herself inside her private study.

Her hands shook uncontrollably.

She poured herself a glass of whiskey.

Before she could drink it...

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

She answered immediately.

"It failed."

A calm male voice replied.

"I know."

"The cameras—"

"I know."

"They saw me."

Another long silence.

Then the man spoke again.

"I told you to stay calm."

"I panicked."

"You made a mistake."

"What do we do now?"

The man's voice became colder.

"We erase every trace."

"And Claire?"

A pause.

Then came the answer that made Eleanor's blood run cold.

"She should have died twenty-five years ago."

The line went dead.

Eleanor slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time in decades...

She was terrified.

Ethan Begins to Doubt

Late that night, Ethan returned to the mansion.

He had grown up believing Eleanor was the kindest person in the family.

She had helped raise him after his parents died.

She had always protected the Whitmore name.

But tonight...

Nothing made sense.

As he walked past the old family portrait hanging in the west hallway, something caught his eye.

A small photograph had fallen from behind the frame.

It showed the Whitmore family twenty-five years earlier.

Children.

Servants.

Relatives.

And one little girl.

About four years old.

Standing beside Eleanor.

The girl's face looked hauntingly familiar.

Ethan picked up the photograph.

His heartbeat quickened.

The child...

Looked exactly like Claire.

Someone had carefully drawn a black X across the little girl's face with red ink.

On the back of the photograph, faded handwriting read:

"Never let her come home."

Ethan stared at the words in disbelief.

Behind him, the old grandfather clock struck midnight.

Somewhere inside the mansion...

A hidden door quietly opened.

And someone began searching for the original security recording before Ethan could discover the truth.
