Chapter 3 – A Forgotten Identity

Chapter 3 – A Forgotten Identity

The old photograph trembled in Ethan's hand.

The little girl standing beside Eleanor wore a white dress embroidered with tiny blue flowers. Her dark hair was tied into two neat braids, and around her neck hung a small silver locket shaped like a rose.

It was the same locket Claire still wore every day.

Ethan looked from the photograph to the handwritten words on the back.

Never let her come home.

His pulse quickened.

"What does this mean?" he whispered.

The hallway was silent.

Only the ticking of the grandfather clock echoed through the mansion.

Then he heard footsteps.

Someone was coming.

Without thinking, Ethan slipped the photograph into his jacket just as the butler rounded the corner.

"Mr. Whitmore," the elderly man said politely. "Is everything alright?"

Ethan forced a smile.

"I'm fine."

But he wasn't.

For the first time in his life, he wondered whether every story he had been told about his family had been a lie.

The Locket

At St. Anne's Medical Center, Claire sat quietly in her hospital bed.

The doctor's words still echoed in her mind.

You're nine weeks pregnant.

She gently rested her hand over her stomach.

Fear mixed with hope.

She had always imagined becoming a mother one day—but not like this, surrounded by police officers, unanswered questions, and people trying to hurt her.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

Ethan entered carrying fresh flowers.

His suit was wrinkled from spending the night at the hospital.

"You should be resting," Claire said.

He smiled faintly.

"I could say the same to you."

For a few moments, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Ethan sat beside the bed.

"I need to ask you something."

Claire nodded.

"When you were a child..."

"...did you ever live at Whitmore Manor?"

She looked confused.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"My mother and I lived in a small apartment near the harbor."

"What about before that?"

Claire frowned.

"I don't remember much before I was five."

She absentmindedly touched the silver locket around her neck.

"My mother said I had a bad fever when I was little."

"She told me I forgot many things afterward."

Ethan stared at the necklace.

"May I see it?"

Claire unclasped the chain and handed it to him.

The moment he opened the tiny locket, he froze.

Inside was a faded photograph.

One side showed Claire's adoptive mother smiling warmly.

The other side...

Was empty.

Almost.

A tiny piece of folded paper was hidden beneath the photograph.

Claire gasped.

"I never knew that was there."

Ethan carefully unfolded it.

Written in tiny, elegant handwriting were only four words.

Remember the blue room.

The Blue Room

Meanwhile, Detective Lucas Bennett continued searching Whitmore Manor.

The missing sixty-two seconds of security footage bothered him more than the attempted murder itself.

Professional hackers rarely targeted private family events.

Someone with experience had planned this.

While examining the mansion's original blueprints, Bennett noticed something unusual.

One room appeared on the oldest plans...

But not on the modern ones.

A nursery.

Painted blue.

Removed from every renovation record after a fire twenty-five years earlier.

He called one of the officers.

"Has anyone searched the old east wing?"

"No, sir."

"Do it now."

Minutes later, officers forced open a door that had been sealed behind decorative paneling.

Dust filled the air.

The forgotten nursery had remained untouched for decades.

Tiny wooden furniture still stood in place.

A rocking horse rested beside the window.

Children's books covered the shelves.

Everything looked as though someone had simply walked away...

And never returned.

The Drawing

One officer discovered a small wooden box beneath the bed.

Inside were crayons.

A music box.

And dozens of childish drawings.

Most showed flowers, birds, and smiling stick figures.

But one picture made Detective Bennett stop breathing.

It showed a little girl holding hands with an elegant woman.

Above the woman, the child had written in uneven handwriting:

Mommy Eleanor

Bennett slowly turned the page over.

Another sentence appeared in red crayon.

Daddy says never tell anyone my real name.

The detective's expression darkened.

Someone had hidden an entire childhood.

A Mother's Promise

Back at the hospital, Claire received an unexpected visitor.

An elderly nun entered quietly.

"My name is Sister Agnes."

Claire smiled politely.

"Do we know each other?"

The nun's eyes filled with emotion.

"I knew your mother."

"My mother passed away three years ago."

Sister Agnes gently shook her head.

"I mean your birth mother."

Claire's heart skipped a beat.

"You... knew her?"

The nun nodded.

"She brought you to our convent one rainy night."

"She was crying."

"She begged us to keep you safe."

Claire's hands trembled.

"Why?"

Before Sister Agnes could answer...

The hospital television suddenly switched on by itself.

Breaking News flashed across the screen.

POLICE REOPEN TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD MISSING CHILD CASE

A childhood photograph appeared.

The same girl from Ethan's picture.

The same little girl from the nursery drawing.

The same silver locket hanging around her neck.

The reporter spoke slowly.

"Authorities now believe the missing child known as Charlotte Whitmore may still be alive."

Claire stared at the screen.

Then at the locket in her hands.

Sister Agnes quietly whispered,

"They're searching for Charlotte..."

"But they don't know..."

She gently took Claire's hand.

"...that Charlotte has been living as Claire all these years."

At that exact moment, somewhere inside Whitmore Manor, Eleanor watched the same news report.

The glass in her hand slipped to the floor and shattered.

She whispered in terror,

May you like

"They've found her."
