Chapter 5 – Blood Doesn't Lie

Chapter 5 – Blood Doesn't Lie

The rain poured relentlessly over St. Anne's Medical Center.

Outside the hospital, reporters crowded behind police barricades, shouting questions at anyone who entered or left.

Inside, Detective Lucas Bennett stood silently, staring at the forged birth certificate spread across the conference table.

One name had been erased.

Another had been written over it.

Yet beneath the faded ink, the original identity was still visible.

Charlotte Sinclair.

Not Whitmore.

Not Carter.

Sinclair.

Bennett looked toward Ethan.

"I've investigated murders, kidnappings, and corporate fraud."

"But I've never seen someone rewrite an entire child's identity."

Ethan's face remained pale.

"If Claire is a Sinclair..."

"Then why did my family claim she was a Whitmore?"

No one had an answer.

Not yet.

The Woman Who Remembered

That afternoon, Bennett received a call from Green Hill Nursing Home.

An elderly woman named Martha Doyle insisted she had information about the missing child.

By the time Bennett, Ethan, and Claire arrived, Martha was waiting by the window with a worn leather Bible resting on her lap.

Her eyes were clouded with age, but her voice was steady.

"I knew this day would come."

Claire smiled politely.

"You know me?"

Martha looked at the silver locket around Claire's neck.

"I held you the night you were born."

The room fell silent.

Claire's heart began to race.

"You were there?"

"I was the head nurse at Sinclair Memorial Hospital."

Martha slowly reached into a small wooden box beside her chair.

Inside was an old photograph wrapped in cloth.

She handed it to Claire.

It showed a young couple smiling while holding a newborn baby.

The woman wore the same silver locket.

The man stood proudly beside her.

Written on the back were four simple words.

Welcome Home, Charlotte Sinclair.

Claire's hands trembled.

"My parents..."

Martha nodded sadly.

"Your mother was Isabella Sinclair."

"And your father..."

She pointed to the smiling man.

"...was Jonathan Sinclair."

Ethan frowned.

"Jonathan Sinclair?"

"The younger brother of Victor Sinclair?"

Martha nodded.

"The rightful heir to Sinclair Holdings."

The Night Everything Changed

Martha closed her eyes, remembering.

"Your father died in what everyone believed was a car accident."

"It wasn't."

Bennett immediately leaned forward.

"What happened?"

"He discovered someone was stealing company assets."

"He planned to expose them."

Claire whispered,

"And my mother?"

Martha's expression darkened.

"She disappeared three months later."

Everyone had believed Isabella abandoned her daughter.

But Martha shook her head.

"She never left willingly."

Hidden in Plain Sight

Across town, forensic experts carefully examined the nursery discovered inside Whitmore Manor.

Behind a loose section of wallpaper, Officer Ryan Collins found a narrow metal box sealed inside the wall.

Inside were children's drawings.

Medical records.

And a cassette tape labeled:

Charlotte – Age 4

The tape was rushed to police headquarters.

When it began playing, the room fell silent.

A little girl's cheerful voice echoed through the speakers.

"My name is Charlotte Sinclair."

"My mommy says I have to be brave."

Then another voice interrupted.

A woman.

Gentle.

Kind.

"If anyone ever asks..."

"You tell them your name."

The child laughed.

"I'm Charlotte!"

The woman answered,

"Always remember that."

Claire covered her mouth.

Even after twenty-five years...

She recognized the voice.

"I've heard her before."

Everyone turned toward her.

"When?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"In my dreams."

Eleanor Breaks

Meanwhile, Eleanor sat alone inside the police interrogation room.

Hours of questioning had worn away her confidence.

Bennett entered carrying the cassette recorder.

He pressed Play.

The little girl's voice filled the room.

Eleanor's face turned white.

"You recognize her."

Eleanor said nothing.

"You helped erase Charlotte Sinclair."

Still silence.

Bennett placed another photograph in front of her.

Jonathan Sinclair.

Isabella Sinclair.

Baby Charlotte.

A happy family.

"What happened to them?"

Eleanor stared at the picture for nearly a minute before tears filled her eyes.

"I didn't want anyone to die."

"Then tell me who did."

Her shoulders shook.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"He'll kill me."

The detective leaned forward.

"Who?"

Eleanor whispered a name so quietly that Bennett almost missed it.

Damian Sinclair.

The room fell silent.

Bennett's eyes narrowed.

Damian Sinclair.

Jonathan's older brother.

Current chairman of Sinclair Holdings.

The man who had attended Claire's fall without showing a single emotion.

Ethan's Doubt

Late that evening, Ethan sat alone in the hospital chapel.

Everything he believed about his family had fallen apart.

Claire quietly entered and sat beside him.

"You didn't lie to me."

He looked at her.

"But everyone else did."

She gently took his hand.

"I don't care whose blood I carry."

"I only care about who stood beside me."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"And I'll keep standing beside you."

For the first time since the nightmare began, Claire felt safe.

Neither of them noticed the shadow standing outside the chapel door.

Someone had been listening.

Blood Doesn't Lie

The official DNA report finally arrived from the National Forensic Laboratory.

Dr. Olivia Grant gathered everyone in the hospital conference room.

"This report includes samples recovered from Jonathan Sinclair's preserved medical records."

She opened the file.

"The results are conclusive."

Claire held her breath.

"You are..."

"...Jonathan Sinclair's biological daughter."

Tears streamed down Claire's face.

Every question about her identity had finally been answered.

But Olivia continued.

"There is one more result."

She turned another page.

Ethan frowned.

"What is it?"

Olivia hesitated.

"We also compared Ethan Whitmore's DNA."

Silence filled the room.

"Ethan..."

"...is not biologically related to the Whitmore family."

The room froze.

Ethan stared at her in disbelief.

"What?"

Olivia slowly nodded.

"Someone switched two children."

"Twenty-five years ago."

Before anyone could speak, Detective Bennett's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"What happened?"

The officer on the other end sounded breathless.

"Detective!"

"We searched Damian Sinclair's private office."

"And?"

"We found evidence that someone has been paying Eleanor millions of dollars every year..."

"...to keep Charlotte Sinclair from ever discovering who she really is."

At that exact moment, a loud explosion echoed from the hospital parking garage.

The building shook violently.

Fire alarms began screaming.

Bennett looked toward the window.

A black SUV burst through the security gate at full speed.

Inside sat a man wearing black leather gloves.

As he drove away, he looked up toward Claire's hospital room.

Then smiled.

The hunt had only just begun.
