Chapter 8 â The Mastermind

Chapter 8 â The Mastermind
The words carved into the stone wall stared back at Claire.
HE IS MINE.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The collapsed tunnel was filled with dust and broken stone.
Claire dropped to her knees.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"Ethan!"
She pushed against the fallen debris with her bare hands.
"Help me!"
Detective Bennett immediately grabbed her shoulders.
"Claire, stop."
"He's alive."
"You don't know that!"
"I know Ethan."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"He survived everything they did to him."
"He survived twenty-five years of lies."
"He won't die here."
The desperation in her voice silenced everyone.
Even Bennett knew she was right.
The Hidden Passage
Jonathan Sinclair carefully examined the collapsed wall.
"There is another way."
Everyone turned toward him.
"You knew about this?"
Jonathan looked ashamed.
"I built this passage."
"Why?"
"Because I knew Damian would eventually come for my children."
Claire stared at him.
"My entire life..."
"Everyone told me you were dead."
Jonathan lowered his head.
"I wanted to come back."
"Every single day."
"But Damian made sure I couldn't."
Bennett stepped closer.
"How?"
Jonathan touched the scar on his shoulder.
"Twenty-five years ago, Damian arranged the accident."
"He didn't kill me."
"He wanted me to suffer."
"He wanted me to watch from the shadows while he destroyed everything I loved."
Claire's eyes filled with anger.
"And you let him?"
The words hurt.
But Jonathan accepted them.
"You're right."
"I failed you."
A long silence followed.
Then Claire whispered,
"But you're here now."
Jonathan looked at his daughter for the first time.
And cried.
The Man Behind the Curtain
Far away from Sinclair Manor...
Damian Sinclair watched security footage from inside his private office.
The image showed the collapsed basement.
His expression remained calm.
"Did you find him?"
His assistant shook his head.
"No sign of Ethan."
Damian smiled.
"Good."
"He was always the dangerous one."
The assistant frowned.
"More dangerous than Charlotte?"
Damian looked at the screen.
"Charlotte has a heart."
"That makes her predictable."
"But Daniel..."
His smile disappeared.
"Daniel was always different."
Ethan's Awakening
Deep beneath the mansion...
Ethan opened his eyes.
The first thing he felt was pain.
His shoulder burned.
His breathing was difficult.
The beam that trapped him had not crushed him completely.
It had created a small space.
A space barely large enough to survive.
He tried moving.
Nothing.
Then he heard a voice.
"You always were stubborn."
Ethan froze.
Someone was there.
A figure stepped through the darkness.
Damian Sinclair.
Ethan's blood turned cold.
"You."
Damian smiled.
"Hello, Daniel."
The name struck harder than any injury.
Ethan stared at him.
"Don't call me that."
"Why?"
"Because that isn't who I am."
Damian crouched beside him.
"Oh, but it is."
"You spent your entire life wearing a stolen name."
Ethan clenched his teeth.
"You stole it."
Damian laughed softly.
"No."
"I saved you."
Damian's Confession
"You don't understand."
Damian sat calmly beside the trapped man.
"Your father was weak."
"Jonathan wanted to expose our family's secrets."
"He wanted justice."
Damian smiled.
"Justice is what poor people ask for when they don't have power."
Ethan stared at him.
"And Charlotte?"
"She was a problem."
"Her existence threatened everything."
Damian's eyes hardened.
"So I solved the problem."
"You kidnapped children."
"I protected an empire."
Ethan struggled against the debris.
"You destroyed innocent lives."
Damian stood.
"And yet..."
"You became one of the most successful businessmen in the country."
"You lived in luxury."
"You had everything."
Ethan looked at him with disgust.
"Because you stole my life."
Eleanor's Final Truth
Meanwhile, Eleanor sat in police custody.
For hours she had refused to speak.
Until Bennett returned with new evidence.
A recording.
Damian's voice.
The conversation from twenty-five years earlier.
Eleanor listened silently.
Then tears fell.
"He promised me."
Bennett watched her carefully.
"Who?"
"Damian."
"What did he promise?"
"That if I helped remove Charlotte..."
"...he would make my son the heir."
Bennett froze.
"Your son?"
Eleanor looked up.
"I had a child."
"A son."
"But Damian took him from me."
The detective frowned.
"Why?"
Eleanor whispered,
"Because Damian didn't want heirs."
"He wanted puppets."
The Real Plan
The evidence revealed the horrifying truth.
Damian never wanted the Whitmore or Sinclair families to survive.
He wanted complete control.
Jonathan's company.
William Whitmore's fortune.
The inheritance.
Everything.
The children were never the target.
They were obstacles.
Claire and Ethan were simply pieces on his chessboard.
Bennett looked at Eleanor.
"Why did you attack Claire?"
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Because Damian told me she was coming back."
"He said if I didn't stop her..."
"He would reveal what I did."
"And what did you do?"
Eleanor whispered:
"I helped him change the records."
The Escape
Inside the underground chamber, Ethan noticed something.
Damian wasn't alone.
A second person stood behind him.
A woman.
Ethan's eyes widened.
"Eleanor?"
She looked away.
"I didn't come here to hurt you."
Damian turned sharply.
"What are you doing?"
For the first time...
Eleanor looked at Damian with hatred.
"You promised me everything."
"You promised my son would be safe."
Damian laughed.
"You still believe promises matter?"
Eleanor stepped closer.
"You used everyone."
"Me."
"Jonathan."
"The children."
Damian's smile disappeared.
"Be careful."
"You're forgetting who saved you from prison."
Eleanor looked toward Ethan.
Then whispered:
"I'm sorry."
She pressed a hidden button on the wall.
The emergency tunnel door opened.
A wave of fresh air entered the chamber.
Damian stared at her.
"You betrayed me."
Eleanor answered quietly.
"No."
"I finally stopped being your victim."
The Final Battle
Police entered through the opened tunnel.
Damian immediately ran.
Bennett followed.
"Damian Sinclair!"
The mastermind disappeared into the darkness of the mansion.
Sirens surrounded the estate.
Helicopters approached overhead.
For the first time in twenty-five years...
Damian Sinclair was no longer untouchable.
But before escaping through the west corridor, he stopped.
He looked back at Claire.
"You think you've won?"
Everyone froze.
Damian smiled.
"You still don't know the biggest secret."
Claire stared at him.
"What secret?"
Damian reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old photograph.
A photograph of Isabella Sinclair.
Claire's mother.
Alive.
Standing beside another child.
Not Charlotte.
Not Daniel.
Another baby.
Damian dropped the photograph at Claire's feet.
Then disappeared into the night.
Claire picked it up.
Her hands began shaking.
Written on the back were five words:
YOUR MOTHER HAD THREE CHILDREN.
Everyone stared in horror.
Three children.
Not two.
A third identity hidden for twenty-five years.
And somewhere in the world...
May you like
Someone else was living a stolen life.
