Chapter 1: The Fall That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Fall That Changed Everything

The silence inside the Ashford mansion was heavier than the storm raging outside.

For years, Claire Bennett had walked through those enormous halls feeling like a stranger.

The marble floors.
The expensive paintings.
The cold smiles from people who shared her husband's blood.

Everything in this house reminded her that she did not belong.

To Ethan, she was his wife.

To his family, she was the woman who had somehow entered their perfect world and taken their beloved son away.

They never said it directly.

They didn't have to.

Their glances said enough.

Their whispers said more.

"She's not one of us."

"She doesn't understand our lifestyle."

"She married Ethan for his money."

Those words followed Claire everywhere.

But she endured them.

Not because she was weak.

Because she loved Ethan.

Because she believed that one day his family would finally see her heart.

She was wrong.

Especially about Eleanor.

Ethan's older sister had always been the most dangerous person in the family.

Beautiful.
Elegant.
Charming in public.

But behind closed doors, Eleanor was cruel.

She knew exactly where to strike.

And tonight, she had crossed a line that could never be erased.

"You really have no shame, do you?"

Eleanor's voice echoed through the mansion's grand living room.

Claire stood near the fireplace, one hand resting gently over her pregnant belly.

She tried to remain calm.

"Eleanor, I don't want to argue."

A bitter laugh escaped Eleanor's lips.

"Of course you don't. You never do."

Claire frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you always pretend to be innocent."

The room slowly filled with tension.

Several members of the Ashford family watched silently.

Nobody stepped in.

Nobody defended Claire.

Not yet.

Eleanor walked closer.

"You came into this family pretending you were different."

Claire stared at her.

"I married Ethan because I love him."

"Love?"

Eleanor smiled coldly.

"Don't make me laugh."

Her eyes moved toward Claire's stomach.

"You even managed to secure your position with a child."

The words hit harder than Claire expected.

Her expression changed.

"Don't talk about my baby like that."

"Oh?"

Eleanor tilted her head.

"Did I hurt your feelings?"

Claire's hands tightened.

"That is enough."

For a moment, the room became completely silent.

Everyone looked surprised.

Claire had always stayed quiet.

Always apologized.

Always tried to keep peace.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, she was protecting her child.

Eleanor noticed.

And she hated it.

"So now you think you're brave?"

"I think I deserve respect."

Eleanor laughed.

"Respect?"

She stepped closer.

"You walked into this family with nothing."

Claire's face turned pale.

"That isn't true."

"You had no money. No status. No powerful family behind you."

"Eleanor."

"And yet Ethan chose you."

A strange bitterness appeared in Eleanor's eyes.

"Do you know how embarrassing that was for us?"

Claire stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

"You ruined everything."

The words came out almost like a whisper.

"You made Ethan forget where he belonged."

Claire shook her head.

"No. Ethan chose his own life."

That answer broke something inside Eleanor.

Her expression changed.

The fake smile disappeared.

"You should've never come back."

Claire froze.

"What?"

Eleanor moved closer.

"You heard me."

Claire took a step backward.

"I live here. This is my husband's home."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"Not for long."

A chill went through Claire.

"What does that mean?"

But Eleanor did not answer.

Instead, she looked around the room.

At the family members watching.

At the servants standing nearby.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

She wanted witnesses.

She wanted everyone to see Claire as the problem.

"You always act like a victim."

Claire's voice trembled.

"Because you keep attacking me."

"Really?"

Eleanor suddenly raised her voice.

"Everyone hear that? Claire is accusing me again."

The maid standing nearby lowered her eyes nervously.

Claire looked around.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody helped.

Her heart sank.

Then Eleanor whispered.

"Nobody wants you here."

Claire felt a painful pressure in her chest.

Not because of Eleanor's words.

Because part of her feared they were true.

She turned away.

"I am done with this conversation."

She started walking toward the hallway.

But Eleanor grabbed her wrist.

Claire immediately pulled back.

"Let go of me."

Eleanor's grip tightened.

"You don't get to walk away."

"Eleanor, stop."

"You're always running."

"I said let go!"

The argument exploded.

Then everything happened too quickly.

One second, Claire was standing at the top of the staircase.

The next second—

Eleanor pushed.

Hard.

With both hands.

Claire's eyes widened.

For a brief moment, the entire world stopped.

She felt herself losing balance.

Her fingers reached desperately for something to hold.

Nothing.

Her body twisted.

The marble steps rushed toward her.

One impact.

Then another.

Then another.

A scream tore through the mansion.

"Claire!"

Ethan's voice came from the doorway.

He had just returned.

And he saw everything.

His wife.

Falling.

His unborn child.

In danger.

The entire mansion froze.

Claire hit the floor below with a devastating impact.

Pain exploded through her body.

Her hands immediately covered her stomach.

"No..."

The word escaped her lips.

She could barely breathe.

Ethan ran toward her.

"Claire!"

He dropped beside her.

His hands shook as he touched her face.

"Look at me."

Claire opened her eyes weakly.

"Ethan..."

"I'm here."

Her tears flowed.

"I can't breathe..."

"Stay with me."

His voice broke.

"Please. Don't close your eyes."

Behind him, Eleanor stood perfectly still.

For a second, fear appeared on her face.

Then it disappeared.

She understood.

She needed control.

She needed a story.

Immediately, she grabbed the nearest maid.

The poor girl gasped.

"Eleanor..."

But Eleanor squeezed her arm tightly.

Then she started crying.

Loudly.

"I can't believe she did this!"

Everyone turned.

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

Eleanor pointed at Claire.

"She attacked me!"

The mansion went silent.

The maid looked horrified.

"What are you saying?"

Eleanor wiped her tears.

"Claire became angry and pushed me first."

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to believe.

Except Ethan.

Because he had seen it.

Every second.

His face slowly changed.

Not confusion.

Not doubt.

Rage.

"You pushed her."

Eleanor froze.

"Ethan..."

"You pushed my wife."

"No, I—"

"I saw you."

The room became colder.

For the first time in years, Eleanor looked afraid.

But before anyone could respond, Claire reached weakly toward her phone.

Her fingers trembled.

She unlocked the screen.

Ethan noticed.

"Claire, don't move."

But she shook her head.

"No..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"I need to do this."

She pressed one contact.

The call connected.

"Detective..."

Everyone stared.

Claire closed her eyes as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Send everyone here immediately."

Eleanor's face changed.

The tears stopped.

The fear returned.

Because she finally understood.

Claire had not called an ambulance.

She had not called her family.

She had called the police.

And whatever happened next would destroy the Ashford family forever.

Eleanor whispered:

"No..."

For the first time tonight, she realized something.

May you like

Claire was not fighting for forgiveness anymore.

She was fighting for the truth.
