Chapter 7: The Trial Begins

Chapter 7: The Trial Begins
The courtroom was filled before the judge even entered.
Reporters stood outside the building.
Cameras flashed.
Questions echoed through the entrance.
"Mrs. Ashford, did you marry Ethan for money?"
"Is it true the Ashford family tried to hide evidence?"
"Was Eleanor Ashford protecting herself?"
Claire heard every word.
Every accusation.
Every cruel assumption.
But this time, she did not lower her head.
Not like before.
Not like when she stood inside the Ashford mansion and endured Eleanor's insults.
Not like when she cried alone after family dinners.
Today, she walked into the courtroom holding Ethan's hand.
And she refused to be afraid.
Ethan noticed the difference.
Months ago, Claire would have looked at the crowd and wondered if they hated her.
Now?
She looked forward.
Strong.
Determined.
"You okay?"
He whispered.
Claire nodded.
"I am."
He squeezed her hand.
"I'm sorry you have to go through this."
She looked at him.
"No."
A small smile appeared.
"We are going through this."
Those words stayed with him.
Because that was the woman he fell in love with.
Not someone who needed saving.
Someone who stood beside him.
Across the courtroom, Eleanor sat beside her lawyers.
She looked completely different from the woman who once controlled every room she entered.
No expensive smile.
No confidence.
No arrogance.
Only a carefully created image of innocence.
But Ethan knew better now.
He had seen the person behind the mask.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
The trial began.
The prosecutor's opening statement was direct.
"On the night of the incident, the defendant, Eleanor Ashford, pushed Claire Bennett Ashford down a marble staircase while she was pregnant."
The courtroom became silent.
"The evidence will show this was not an accident."
The prosecutor looked toward Eleanor.
"It was an act caused by years of jealousy, resentment, and a desire to remove the victim from the Ashford family."
Eleanor's expression remained calm.
But her fingers tightened around her lawyer's hand.
Then came the defense.
Eleanor's attorney, Jonathan Pierce, stood.
A famous lawyer.
Known for destroying witnesses.
Known for winning impossible cases.
"Ladies and gentlemen."
His voice was smooth.
"This case is not about a fall."
He looked at Claire.
"It is about a woman who entered one of the richest families in the country and now wants everyone to believe she is a victim."
Claire's expression changed.
Ethan immediately reacted.
But Claire stopped him.
She was ready.
Jonathan continued.
"My client is a loving daughter."
"A respected businesswoman."
"And a member of the Ashford family."
He paused.
"Meanwhile, Mrs. Claire Ashford..."
His eyes moved toward her.
"Was a stranger who suddenly became the wife of the heir."
A whisper moved through the courtroom.
Claire felt it.
The judgment.
The same judgment she had lived with for years.
Then the defense made their first attack.
They presented financial records.
"These documents show that Claire Bennett had significant financial difficulties before meeting Ethan Ashford."
The courtroom murmured.
Claire remained silent.
The lawyer turned.
"Mrs. Ashford, is it true you were struggling financially before your marriage?"
Claire looked at him.
"Yes."
"And after marrying Ethan, your lifestyle changed completely?"
"Yes."
"So your life improved because of Ethan Ashford."
Ethan stood.
"Objection."
The judge looked at him.
"Sustained. Sit down, Mr. Ashford."
Ethan reluctantly sat.
But his anger was obvious.
Jonathan smiled.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
He wasn't proving innocence.
He was creating doubt.
He wanted people to question Claire.
Because if people questioned Claire...
They would question the entire case.
"Mrs. Ashford."
The lawyer approached.
"Did you know who Ethan was when you first met him?"
Claire answered immediately.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"You expect this court to believe you met a wealthy heir by coincidence?"
Claire looked at him.
"I don't expect anything."
A pause.
"I am simply telling the truth."
The lawyer smiled.
"Truth."
He repeated the word.
"Then perhaps we should discuss the truth about your marriage."
Ethan's expression changed.
Claire froze.
"What does that mean?"
Jonathan turned toward the judge.
"Your Honor, we have evidence suggesting Mrs. Ashford's relationship with Ethan was not as innocent as she claims."
The courtroom exploded.
Ethan stood.
"What?"
The judge struck the table.
"Order!"
Jonathan handed documents to the judge.
"The defense would like to introduce evidence regarding the origins of this marriage."
Claire stared.
She knew immediately.
The envelope.
The fake signature.
The secret Eleanor buried.
The judge reviewed the papers.
His expression became serious.
"Where did you obtain these documents?"
Jonathan answered:
"From an internal Ashford family archive."
Ethan looked toward his family.
Richard.
Victoria.
Eleanor.
Someone had known.
Someone had hidden this.
The judge looked at Claire.
"Mrs. Ashford, do you recognize this document?"
Claire looked down.
It was her marriage agreement.
But something was wrong.
The signature.
The date.
The details.
None of it matched.
"I have never seen this before."
Jonathan stepped closer.
"Yet it contains your name."
Claire's voice became firm.
"Someone forged it."
The courtroom became silent.
Jonathan smiled.
"Interesting."
He looked at the jury.
"Mrs. Ashford claims someone forged documents connected to her own marriage."
A pause.
"Perhaps because the truth is inconvenient."
Ethan couldn't stay silent.
"Enough."
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Ashford."
Ethan stood.
"My wife was nearly killed."
His voice echoed.
"And now you are trying to put her on trial?"
The judge warned him.
But everyone in the room understood.
This was no longer only about Eleanor.
This was about the Ashford family's secrets.
During the break, Claire sat alone.
She looked exhausted.
Ethan approached.
"I'm sorry."
She looked up.
"For what?"
"For not knowing."
Claire smiled sadly.
"Ethan, this isn't your fault."
"But my family did this."
She held his hand.
"Then help me prove the truth."
Outside the courtroom, Detective Hayes received a call.
His expression changed immediately.
He walked toward Ethan.
"We found something."
Ethan stood.
"What?"
"The original marriage records."
Claire looked surprised.
"But the defense has them."
"No."
Detective Hayes shook his head.
"They have a copy."
He lowered his voice.
"The original document says something completely different."
Ethan frowned.
"What does it say?"
The detective looked at Claire.
Then at Ethan.
"It proves your marriage was never arranged."
A moment of relief.
Then the detective continued.
"But it also reveals something else."
Everyone waited.
"Someone in the Ashford family knew Claire before you met her."
Claire's face went pale.
"Who?"
Detective Hayes opened the file.
The answer was written clearly.
A name.
A name that changed everything.
Eleanor Ashford.
The courtroom doors opened again.
The trial was about to continue.
But now the question had changed.
Not:
Did Eleanor push Claire?
But:
Why had Eleanor known Claire years before Ethan did?
That night, Eleanor sat in her lawyer's office.
Her confidence had returned.
Because she knew something Claire did not.
The truth was finally coming out.
But not the truth Claire wanted.
Eleanor looked at the old photograph.
Then whispered:
"Eight years ago, you saved Ethan."
A smile appeared.
"But you forgot one thing."
She turned the photograph over.
Written on the back were four words.
"You owe me."
