Chapter 8: The Witness Nobody Expected

Chapter 8: The Witness Nobody Expected
The courtroom had never been so quiet.
Not even the reporters outside made a sound.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting for the answer to the question that had changed everything.
Why did Eleanor Ashford know Claire Bennett before Ethan did?
The evidence was no longer just about a family argument.
It was no longer just about a fall down a staircase.
It was about a secret buried for eight years.
A secret that connected three people who were never supposed to meet.
Claire.
Ethan.
And Eleanor.
Claire sat beside Ethan, staring at the documents in front of her.
Her mind was racing.
She had spent years believing her story with Ethan began when they met at a small bookstore.
A simple conversation.
A simple coffee.
A simple moment that changed her life.
She remembered Ethan smiling at her.
She remembered how different he seemed from the wealthy people she had always feared.
He wasn't arrogant.
He wasn't cold.
He was just Ethan.
The man she fell in love with.
But now she wondered...
Was that moment really the beginning?
Or had someone been moving pieces around long before?
The judge returned.
Everyone stood.
The trial resumed.
Eleanor's lawyer, Jonathan Pierce, looked confident.
Too confident.
He approached the witness stand.
"Your Honor, the defense would like to call our next witness."
The prosecutor stood immediately.
"Who?"
Jonathan smiled.
"Someone who has known the truth about this case for years."
The courtroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
And then...
The person walked in.
Claire stopped breathing.
Ethan's face changed.
Because he recognized her.
A woman in her late fifties.
Elegant.
Calm.
But carrying years of regret in her eyes.
"Who is that?" Claire whispered.
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know."
But his voice said otherwise.
Because the woman looked directly at him.
Like she had known him for a long time.
The woman sat down.
The judge asked:
"State your name."
She answered:
"Margaret Collins."
The courtroom remained silent.
The prosecutor checked his notes.
"Mrs. Collins, do you know the defendant?"
Margaret looked toward Eleanor.
"Yes."
"How?"
A pause.
"Because I worked for the Ashford family eight years ago."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
Another person from the past.
Another secret.
Jonathan approached.
"Mrs. Collins, did you know Claire Bennett before her marriage to Ethan Ashford?"
Claire's heart tightened.
Margaret looked at her.
"Yes."
The answer shocked everyone.
Even Ethan.
"How?"
Jonathan asked.
Margaret took a deep breath.
"Because I was there the night Claire met Ethan."
The courtroom erupted.
The judge demanded silence.
Ethan turned toward Claire.
She looked just as confused.
"I don't remember her."
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"You weren't supposed to."
Jonathan continued.
"Please explain."
Margaret folded her hands.
"Eight years ago, Mr. Ethan Ashford attended an Ashford Foundation event."
The same event.
The same photograph.
"That night, Ethan left the building after an argument with his father."
Ethan remembered.
He remembered the pressure.
The anger.
The feeling of being trapped.
"He was sitting outside when Claire found him."
Margaret looked at Claire.
"She helped him."
Claire whispered:
"But I didn't know him."
"I know."
Margaret nodded.
"That is why I respected you."
Jonathan smiled.
"Mrs. Collins, did Eleanor Ashford know Claire was there?"
Margaret hesitated.
The hesitation was enough.
"Yes."
A wave of shock moved through the courtroom.
Eleanor's face hardened.
"That's a lie."
The judge looked at her.
"Miss Ashford, remain silent."
Margaret continued.
"Eleanor saw Claire helping Ethan."
"And what happened?"
Margaret looked at Eleanor.
"She became angry."
"Why?"
"Because Ethan trusted a stranger."
The courtroom became silent.
Margaret's voice lowered.
"More than he trusted his own family."
Ethan looked down.
That sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
Jonathan walked slowly.
"So Eleanor believed Claire stole Ethan from her?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"Did she ever say anything?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I heard her."
"What did she say?"
The courtroom waited.
Margaret repeated the words she had never forgotten.
"She said..."
A pause.
"She said, 'That woman doesn't even know who he is, and he already looks at her differently.'"
Claire felt a painful feeling in her chest.
All these years.
All those insults.
All that hatred.
It started because of one moment.
One moment where she had simply been kind.
The prosecutor stood.
"Mrs. Collins, why are you coming forward now?"
Margaret looked ashamed.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of whom?"
Her eyes moved toward Eleanor.
"Her."
The courtroom became tense.
Jonathan frowned.
"Mrs. Collins, are you claiming Eleanor threatened you?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"When?"
"After Claire married Ethan."
The prosecutor approached.
"What did she do?"
Margaret took a breath.
"She told me to forget what I saw."
"And if you didn't?"
Margaret's voice shook.
"She said she could destroy my family."
Eleanor suddenly laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
Everyone looked at her.
"Really?"
She stood.
"After all these years, you decide to pretend you are innocent?"
The judge ordered:
"Sit down."
But Eleanor ignored him.
"You think Claire is some kind of angel?"
She looked at Claire.
"You don't know what happened."
Claire stared.
"What are you talking about?"
Eleanor smiled.
A dangerous smile.
"Ask your husband."
Everyone turned to Ethan.
He froze.
"What does she mean?"
Claire asked softly.
Ethan looked confused.
"I don't know."
Eleanor laughed again.
"Of course you don't."
She looked at the jury.
"Because Ethan doesn't remember."
The room went silent.
Jonathan looked surprised.
Even he didn't know what she was about to say.
Eleanor continued.
"That night wasn't just a random meeting."
She pointed at Claire.
"She was involved."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"You think you found him by chance?"
"Yes."
"You think fate brought you together?"
Eleanor stepped forward.
"How convenient."
The judge interrupted.
"Miss Ashford, you will have the opportunity to present your evidence through your attorney."
Eleanor sat.
But her smile remained.
Because she believed she had planted doubt.
During the break, Ethan found Claire alone.
"You don't believe her."
It wasn't a question.
Claire looked at him.
"I don't know what to believe."
The answer hurt.
But Ethan understood.
Because he was asking himself the same question.
Then Detective Hayes appeared.
"Ethan."
His voice was serious.
"We investigated Margaret Collins' statement."
"And?"
"She was telling the truth."
Ethan exhaled.
Relief.
Then the detective continued.
"But we found something else."
"What?"
Detective Hayes handed him a file.
"Someone paid Margaret Collins after that night."
Claire looked at the document.
"Who?"
Detective Hayes answered:
"Richard Ashford."
Ethan froze.
Again.
His father.
Always his father.
That night, Richard stood alone in his office.
Ethan entered.
"Why did you pay her?"
Richard did not turn around.
"I was protecting you."
"Protecting me?"
Ethan's voice broke.
"You erased my memories."
"No."
"You hid the truth."
Richard finally turned.
His face was tired.
"I was trying to prevent a mistake."
"What mistake?"
Richard looked toward the window.
"Letting you fall in love with someone your family could never accept."
Ethan stared at him.
"Someone like Claire?"
Richard said nothing.
That was the answer.
Meanwhile, Eleanor sat in her lawyer's office.
She received a message.
A single sentence.
"The backup evidence is ready."
Her eyes narrowed.
She smiled.
Because the witness had revealed only half the truth.
The other half...
Would destroy Claire.
The next day, a new piece of evidence was submitted.
A recording.
Eight years old.
A conversation between Claire and Ethan.
A conversation Claire had never heard.
And when the recording played...
Everyone in the courtroom heard Ethan say:
"I wish I had never met you."
Claire's face went pale.
Because she knew Ethan had never said those words to her.
Not now.
Not ever.
Someone had created a lie.
And that lie was about to destroy everything.
