Chapter 11: Eleanor's Last Move

Chapter 11: Eleanor's Last Move

The hospital room was dark.

Only the soft light from the hallway entered through the slightly opened door.

Claire stared at Victoria Ashford.

The woman who had spent years watching silently.

The woman who had defended her daughter.

The woman whose name was now connected to the sedative found in Claire's body.

And yet...

She was crying.

Not pretending.

Not performing.

Actually crying.

"I need to tell you the truth."

Claire's hand moved protectively over her stomach.

"Why should I believe you?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

Because she knew Claire had every right to ask.

"I don't expect you to."

A pause.

"But you deserve to know."

Victoria walked slowly toward the chair beside the bed.

She placed the file on the table.

"This is everything."

Claire looked at it.

"Everything about what?"

Victoria swallowed.

"About why Richard created Project Claire."

The name still felt like a wound.

Claire opened the file.

Inside were documents.

Reports.

Medical records.

Family information.

And something that made her stop.

A genetic report.

Claire looked up.

"What is this?"

Victoria's hands trembled.

"When Richard discovered Ethan wanted to leave the family business, he became desperate."

"Why?"

"Because he believed the Ashford name would end."

Claire frowned.

"Because Ethan didn't want to inherit?"

Victoria nodded.

"Richard believed the only way to keep Ethan connected to the family was through a successor."

Claire looked at her stomach.

"My baby."

Victoria nodded.

"But there was a problem."

"What problem?"

Victoria looked away.

"Richard wanted control over everything."

Claire felt anger rising.

"My child is not a business plan."

"No."

Victoria's voice broke.

"I know."

"Then why did you let him do this?"

That question destroyed Victoria.

Because she had no good answer.

"I was weak."

Silence.

"I spent my whole life obeying Richard."

She looked at Claire.

"I told myself I was protecting my children."

A bitter smile.

"But I was only protecting the family name."

Claire looked down.

She thought about all the years she spent trying to earn their acceptance.

All the dinners where she felt unwanted.

All the moments she wondered what she had done wrong.

And now she knew.

It was never about her.

It was about control.

"Why was the baby so important?"

Victoria hesitated.

Then said:

"Because Richard believed the Ashford bloodline was at risk."

Claire frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria opened another document.

"The Ashford family has a hereditary condition."

Claire read the report.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

"It affects fertility."

A pause.

"Richard was afraid Ethan would never have a child."

Claire looked at her.

"And then I became pregnant."

Victoria nodded.

"You became the proof he needed."

Claire felt sick.

Her child had been loved by her and Ethan.

But to Richard...

It was a symbol.

A continuation of power.

"Did Eleanor know?"

Victoria's face changed.

"Yes."

Claire closed her eyes.

Of course.

Eleanor knew everything.

At that moment, somewhere else...

Eleanor sat across from Jonathan Pierce.

Her lawyer.

Her last hope.

The courtroom battle was not going well.

The witness had damaged her.

The evidence was building.

The family was turning against her.

But Eleanor was not finished.

Not yet.

Jonathan placed a folder on the table.

"You understand this is dangerous."

Eleanor looked at him.

"Everything is dangerous now."

"If we use this evidence, it will hurt Ethan too."

She didn't react.

"Do it."

Jonathan frowned.

"You are talking about destroying your own brother."

Eleanor looked at the window.

"My brother already chose someone else."

"That doesn't mean—"

"Do it."

Her voice became cold.

"I need to survive."

The next morning, the courtroom was packed.

The media had arrived.

Everyone knew something big was coming.

The prosecutor stood.

"Your Honor, we would like to continue with our evidence."

Before he could speak, Jonathan stood.

"The defense has new information."

The judge looked annoyed.

"New evidence?"

"Yes."

Jonathan turned toward Claire.

"Evidence that changes the entire story."

Claire felt Ethan's hand tighten around hers.

"What is she doing?"

He whispered.

"I don't know."

But they both knew.

Something terrible was coming.

Jonathan approached the witness stand.

"We would like to introduce evidence regarding Claire Bennett's pregnancy."

The courtroom erupted.

Claire's face turned pale.

Ethan immediately stood.

"Objection."

The judge looked at him.

"Sit down, Mr. Ashford."

"But this is personal—"

"I understand."

The judge looked at Jonathan.

"But if it is relevant, it will be considered."

Jonathan displayed a document.

"A medical report."

The prosecutor frowned.

"What is the purpose of this?"

Jonathan looked toward the jury.

"To prove that Claire Bennett's pregnancy was not just a happy accident."

A murmur spread.

Claire felt her heart pounding.

Jonathan continued.

"The Ashford family desperately needed an heir."

Ethan stared.

"What are you doing?"

Jonathan ignored him.

"The defense believes Claire Bennett understood exactly what marriage into the Ashford family would provide."

The accusation was clear.

They were making Claire look like a woman who planned everything.

Claire's eyes filled with disbelief.

After everything.

After almost losing her baby.

They were still attacking her.

Then Jonathan revealed the final piece.

A contract.

Signed years ago.

Between Richard Ashford...

And a private investigator.

The document contained Claire's information.

But underneath it...

Was another name.

Daniel Bennett.

Claire's father.

Claire froze.

"My father?"

The courtroom went silent.

Jonathan turned.

"Yes."

Ethan looked confused.

"What does Claire's father have to do with this?"

Jonathan smiled.

"That is exactly what we intend to prove."

The evidence suggested something impossible.

Claire's father had known about the Ashfords.

He had accepted money from Richard.

And he had hidden it from Claire.

Ethan looked at Claire.

Her face had lost all color.

"I didn't know."

He believed her.

Immediately.

But the damage was done.

Because the world outside would not believe her.

During the break, Claire sat alone.

The accusations hurt.

But something hurt more.

Her father's name.

Her own family.

Another person who had hidden the truth.

Ethan sat beside her.

"Look at me."

She did.

"I believe you."

A tear fell from her eye.

"Even if everyone else doesn't?"

"Especially then."

Meanwhile, Eleanor watched from across the courtroom.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

Because she realized something.

She had gone too far.

She wanted Claire gone.

But now she was destroying Ethan too.

That night, Eleanor received a message.

"The final evidence has been found."

She stared at the screen.

"Who sent this?"

The reply came:

"Someone who knows what Richard really did."

Eleanor frowned.

Then another message arrived.

"You were never the mastermind."

Her face changed.

Because that was the one thing she feared.

Someone else had been controlling the game.

Back at the hospital, Claire looked through the documents Victoria gave her.

One page caught her attention.

A handwritten note.

Not from Richard.

Not from Eleanor.

From someone else.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The note said:

"The Ashfords don't know the truth about the child."

Claire's heart stopped.

She read the next line.

"Because the baby is not only Ethan's future."

A chill ran through her.

The final sentence was written underneath.

"The baby is the reason they chose you."

Claire looked up.

Terrified.

Because suddenly...

The question was no longer:

Why did the Ashfords want her gone?

The question was:

Why did they need her child so badly?
