Chapter 5: The Ashford Family War

Chapter 5: The Ashford Family War
The photograph sat on Claire's hospital table.
A single piece of paper.
A single image.
Yet it felt heavier than anything she had ever held.
She stared at it again.
And again.
Trying to understand something that made no sense.
It was impossible.
At least, that was what she wanted to believe.
The picture showed Ethan standing outside a charity event almost eight years ago.
He was younger.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
And standing beside him...
Was Claire.
Except Claire had never met Ethan eight years ago.
She had never attended that event.
She had never even been in the same city.
So why was she there?
"Ethan."
Her voice was quiet.
But he immediately noticed something was wrong.
He walked closer.
"What happened?"
Claire handed him the photograph.
The moment he saw it, his expression changed.
A rare expression.
Confusion.
"This..."
He stopped.
"You know this picture?"
"No."
But his eyes said something else.
Claire noticed.
"Ethan."
He looked away.
"I don't understand."
"You're lying."
The accusation was gentle.
Not angry.
That made it worse.
Ethan sat beside her.
"I've never seen this picture before."
"Then why do you look afraid?"
He had no answer.
Because the truth was simple.
He was afraid.
Not of the photograph.
Of what it meant.
Before Ethan could explain, his phone rang.
Richard Ashford.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then answered.
"What?"
His father's voice came immediately.
"We need to talk."
"I don't have anything to say."
"You do."
A pause.
"About the future of this family."
Ethan almost laughed.
"The future?"
His eyes moved to Claire.
"My wife almost lost our child because of this family."
Richard's voice hardened.
"You are allowing anger to control you."
"No."
Ethan's tone became colder.
"I am finally listening."
"Come home."
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"I won't."
Silence.
Then Richard said:
"If you refuse, understand the consequences."
Ethan frowned.
"What consequences?"
"Your position in Ashford Holdings."
There it was.
The thing Richard always used.
Power.
Money.
Legacy.
Ethan looked at Claire.
Then replied:
"Keep it."
Richard was silent.
"You don't mean that."
"I do."
"You would throw away everything?"
Ethan looked around the hospital room.
At Claire.
At the woman fighting because his family couldn't accept her.
"Everything?"
He smiled bitterly.
"No."
"I would be throwing away the things that never mattered."
Then he ended the call.
That afternoon, Ethan returned to the Ashford mansion.
Not as the heir.
Not as the son.
But as a man demanding answers.
The entire family was waiting.
Richard.
Victoria.
Eleanor.
Even members of the Ashford board.
They expected him to surrender.
They were wrong.
Richard stood first.
"Ethan, this situation has gone too far."
Ethan looked around.
"My wife was pushed down the stairs."
"We don't know all the facts."
Ethan stared at him.
"We do."
Richard's expression changed.
"Be careful."
"No."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You be careful."
The room went silent.
"Because I am done protecting people who never protected Claire."
Eleanor stood.
"You hate me now?"
Ethan looked at her.
"I hate what you did."
A tear appeared in her eyes.
"I am still your sister."
"And Claire is still the woman carrying my child."
The answer destroyed her.
Because she expected anger.
She expected shouting.
She expected a fight.
She didn't expect him to choose.
Victoria finally spoke.
"Ethan, please."
Her voice was softer.
"Think about the family."
Claire's pain flashed through his mind.
"The family?"
He laughed.
"You keep saying that word."
He looked at all of them.
"But what family?"
Nobody answered.
"The family that watched my wife get insulted for years?"
Silence.
"The family that believed a pregnant woman was a threat?"
Silence.
"The family that cared more about reputation than the truth?"
Richard's face hardened.
"Enough."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"Not enough."
Then Richard revealed his final weapon.
"If you continue this."
He paused.
"You will lose your inheritance."
Nobody moved.
Everyone expected Ethan to hesitate.
He didn't.
"Fine."
Richard looked surprised.
"Fine?"
Ethan nodded.
"I never wanted a life where I had to choose between money and the woman I love."
For the first time in years...
Richard Ashford had no response.
Later that evening, Claire watched Ethan pack their things from the mansion.
"You don't have to do this."
He looked at her.
"Yes, I do."
"But this is your family."
Ethan smiled sadly.
"No."
He touched her hand.
"You are my family."
Those words meant more than any inheritance.
But as Ethan prepared to leave, someone stopped him.
His mother.
Victoria.
She stood near the doorway.
Holding something.
"Ethan."
He turned.
"What?"
She looked exhausted.
Not like the elegant woman from before.
Like a mother who had finally realized she had lost control.
"I need to tell you something."
Ethan remained silent.
Victoria handed him a folder.
"What is this?"
"Something your father never wanted you to see."
Ethan opened it.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
About a charity event eight years ago.
The same event from the photograph.
His face changed.
"Where did you get this?"
Victoria whispered:
"I kept it because I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward Eleanor's room.
"Of what Eleanor would do if the truth came out."
Ethan read the first page.
And froze.
The document contained a name.
A name he knew.
A name that changed everything.
Claire Bennett.
But the date was eight years before they met.
"What is this?"
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know the whole story."
"Then tell me what you know."
She took a breath.
"Eight years ago, your father made a decision."
"What decision?"
"To find a way to keep you inside the Ashford family."
Ethan frowned.
"What does Claire have to do with that?"
Victoria looked at him.
"Everything."
Meanwhile, Eleanor stood in her bedroom.
Watching Ethan leave through the window.
Her hands trembled.
Not from sadness.
From anger.
She called someone.
The call connected.
"Did he see the documents?"
A pause.
Then a voice answered:
"Not yet."
Eleanor smiled.
"Good."
"Because when he learns the truth..."
She looked at the photograph.
The same photograph Claire received.
"...he will realize Claire was never an accident."
That night, Detective Hayes received a new report.
The security footage wasn't the only evidence hidden in the Ashford mansion.
There was another file.
A secret archive.
Created eight years ago.
And the person who created it...
Was Richard Ashford.
The Ashford family war had begun.
But the fight was no longer about Eleanor.
It was about the secret that brought Claire into Ethan's life.
A secret that could destroy their marriage.
Forever.
