Chapter 6: The Secret Eleanor Buried

Chapter 6: The Secret Eleanor Buried
The folder remained open on Ethan's desk.
For hours.
He had read every page.
Every document.
Every name.
Every date.
But no matter how many times he looked at it, the truth remained impossible to accept.
Claire Bennett had been connected to the Ashford family long before she met him.
Eight years before their first conversation.
Eight years before their first date.
Eight years before she walked into his life.
How?
Why?
And why had everyone hidden it from him?
The first document was a charity event report.
The Ashford Foundation's annual fundraiser.
The same event shown in the photograph.
Ethan remembered that night.
Barely.
He had been twenty-seven.
His father had forced him to attend hundreds of events like that.
Smile.
Shake hands.
Take pictures.
Pretend to care.
At the time, Ethan thought it was meaningless.
But apparently...
Someone had been watching.
Someone had been planning.
The second document made his hands tighten.
It was a background report.
Not on Claire.
On her family.
Her father.
Her childhood.
Her education.
Everything.
Someone had investigated Claire years before Ethan even knew her.
"Why?"
The question escaped his lips.
Victoria stood quietly across the room.
"Because your father was afraid."
Ethan looked up.
"Afraid of Claire?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"Afraid of losing you."
Ethan stood.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria sighed.
"Your father always believed the Ashford name was everything."
"I know."
"No."
Her voice was sad.
"You don't."
She looked at the documents.
"He believed your marriage would decide the future of this family."
Ethan frowned.
"My marriage?"
Victoria nodded.
"Your father wanted you to marry someone from a powerful family."
"Of course."
"Someone who could strengthen the Ashford empire."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"And Claire was not that person."
"No."
Victoria looked away.
"She was the opposite."
Ethan felt anger rising.
"So my father investigated her?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Victoria hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Because Eleanor found her first."
The room became silent.
"Eleanor?"
Victoria nodded.
"Eight years ago, Eleanor attended that charity event."
Ethan stared at the photograph.
"She knew Claire?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what happened?"
Victoria sat down.
"Claire helped someone that night."
"Who?"
Victoria looked at him.
"You."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
"You were drunk."
The memory slowly returned.
A crowded room.
Too many people.
Too many expectations.
He remembered leaving the event early.
He remembered feeling sick.
He remembered sitting outside alone.
But nothing after that.
Victoria continued.
"You had a panic attack."
Ethan looked confused.
"A panic attack?"
She nodded.
"You were exhausted. Your father's pressure had become unbearable."
"And Claire?"
"She was the only person who stopped."
Ethan stared at the picture.
"What did she do?"
"She stayed with you."
Victoria smiled sadly.
"She didn't know who you were."
"She didn't?"
"No."
"Then why did she help me?"
Victoria answered simply:
"Because you needed help."
Those words hurt.
Because Ethan realized something.
Claire had loved him before she knew his name.
Before she knew his money.
Before she knew his family.
And his family had spent years accusing her of wanting exactly those things.
"But why did Eleanor hate her?"
Victoria's expression changed.
"Because Eleanor saw something that night."
"What?"
"She saw you."
Ethan frowned.
"Me?"
"She saw how you looked at Claire."
A pause.
"Even though you didn't remember her, Eleanor remembered."
The truth began coming together.
Eleanor had spent eight years watching.
Waiting.
Believing something had been stolen from her.
But there was more.
"Why did she think Claire took everything from her?"
Victoria looked toward the window.
"Because your father promised Eleanor something."
"What?"
"Control."
Ethan remained silent.
Victoria continued.
"When your grandfather died, Eleanor believed she would become the face of the Ashford family."
"She was always Father's favorite."
"Yes."
"But?"
Victoria looked at him.
"Your father changed his mind."
"Because of me."
"Because of your success."
Ethan understood.
Eleanor had not only lost Ethan's attention.
She had lost her place.
But there was one thing that still bothered him.
"The photograph."
Victoria looked at him.
"Where did Claire get it?"
"Someone sent it anonymously."
Victoria's face became pale.
"Someone wanted you to know."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
At that moment, Ethan's phone rang.
Detective Hayes.
He answered immediately.
"Ethan."
"What happened?"
"We searched the archive room."
"And?"
"We found another file."
His heart sank.
"What kind of file?"
A pause.
"One related to Eleanor."
Twenty minutes later, Ethan arrived at the mansion.
Detective Hayes was waiting near Richard's private office.
Inside was a locked cabinet.
The lock had been broken.
Someone had already searched through it.
"What was inside?"
The detective held a small box.
"Letters."
Ethan opened the box.
Inside were handwritten letters.
All from Eleanor.
But they were not recent.
They were years old.
The first letter was dated eight years ago.
Ethan read it.
His face slowly changed.
"Father, I understand your plan. But I refuse to accept it. Ethan belongs with this family. He cannot choose someone like her."
His hands shook.
The second letter was worse.
"If Claire becomes part of this family, everything I worked for will disappear."
The third letter made Ethan stop breathing.
"I will make sure she never takes my place."
"Eleanor wrote these?"
Detective Hayes nodded.
"She did."
"But why hide them?"
"Because someone removed them."
"Who?"
The detective looked at the cabinet.
"Your father."
Ethan closed his eyes.
His entire life was changing.
His father.
His sister.
His family.
Everything he believed was breaking apart.
Meanwhile, Claire was still at the hospital.
She was awake when Ethan returned.
But she immediately noticed.
Something had happened.
"You found the truth."
He sat beside her.
"I found pieces of it."
She waited.
"Eleanor didn't suddenly start hating you."
"No."
Claire looked down.
"She hated me from the beginning."
Ethan took her hand.
"Because she thought you stole something from her."
"What?"
He looked at her.
"Me."
Claire's eyes filled with sadness.
"I never wanted to take you away from anyone."
"I know."
"But your family thinks I did."
Ethan shook his head.
"They were wrong."
For the first time since the fall, Claire allowed herself to cry.
Not because of pain.
Because of everything she had endured.
Years of being blamed.
Years of being judged.
Years of wondering if she truly belonged.
Ethan held her.
"I'm sorry."
She whispered:
"I needed you to believe me sooner."
Those words hurt more than any accusation.
Because they were true.
That night, Eleanor sat alone in her apartment.
The news was spreading.
The investigation was moving forward.
Her carefully built world was collapsing.
Her phone rang.
She answered.
"Did you find out?"
The voice on the other end asked.
"Yes."
"And?"
Eleanor smiled.
"He knows."
A pause.
"Then it's time."
"Time for what?"
She looked at a document in her hand.
A document that could destroy Ethan and Claire's marriage.
"Time for Ethan to learn the final secret."
The next morning, Claire received another envelope.
This time, it contained a marriage document.
Her marriage document.
Except...
The signature at the bottom was not Ethan's.
Claire stared at the paper.
Her heart stopped.
Because the truth Eleanor buried...
Was not about the past.
It was about her marriage.
