CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1

The Fall That Changed Everything

"Yes."

My voice barely escaped my throat.

"Something happened."

Detective Laura Chen did not ask another question.

She didn't need to.

After years working major cases, she knew the difference between a person seeking revenge and a person fighting to survive.

"Emma, stay on the line."

Her voice became firm.

"Do not move unless you have to."

I closed my eyes.

The marble floor beneath me felt like ice.

My hand remained over my stomach.

Over my baby.

Over the one person in this house who had no idea how dangerous the Whitmore family could be.

"Is the baby okay?"

Daniel finally spoke.

The concern in his voice should have comforted me.

Instead, it hurt.

Because I had spent the last two years believing Daniel Whitmore was the one person in this family who would always stand beside me.

Now I wasn't sure anymore.

I looked at him.

My husband.

The father of my child.

The man who had watched me fall.

And the question that had haunted me since the moment my body hit the first step returned.

Why didn't he move?

Why didn't he catch me?

Why did he look more afraid of his family than he was afraid of losing me?

"I asked if the baby is okay," Daniel repeated.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because only a few minutes ago, nobody cared if I was okay.

Not when Serena pushed me.

Not when I was lying on the floor.

Not when Evelyn Whitmore accused me before asking a single question.

Now suddenly everyone remembered I was carrying an heir.

A Whitmore heir.

That was what mattered.

Not Emma.

Never Emma.

"The ambulance is coming," Laura said through the phone.

I heard movement outside.

A servant whispering.

Someone closing a door.

Someone probably calling a lawyer.

Because that was how the Whitmore family worked.

They did not solve problems.

They controlled them.

Serena remained at the top of the staircase.

But the tears had disappeared.

She was watching me carefully.

Calculating.

I knew that expression.

I had seen it before.

The first time was three months after my wedding.

"You should understand your position, Emma."

Serena had said it while arranging flowers in the Whitmore dining room.

I had thought she was joking.

I was wrong.

"You married into this family."

She smiled.

"That doesn't mean you belong here."

At the time, I ignored her.

I told myself Serena was jealous.

A difficult sister-in-law.

Someone who would eventually accept me.

I was wrong about that too.

Because Serena didn't hate me because I married Daniel.

She hated me because Daniel chose me.

And in the Whitmore family, being chosen was dangerous.

The sound of sirens approached.

Only then did Serena begin crying again.

Perfect timing.

Almost impressive.

"Evelyn," she whispered.

"I can't believe she would do this."

My mother-in-law immediately wrapped an arm around her.

"My poor girl."

I stared at them.

My vision blurred.

Not from pain.

From disbelief.

A pregnant woman was lying injured on the floor.

And they were comforting the person who pushed her.

Then Daniel walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like approaching a stranger.

"Emma."

I looked at him.

"Did Serena push you?"

The question should have been simple.

But it wasn't.

Because Daniel already knew the answer.

He was standing near the stairs.

He saw everything.

Yet he still asked.

I swallowed.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

Serena gasped.

"Emma!"

Her voice was filled with fake horror.

"How could you say that?"

I turned my head toward her.

For the first time, I didn't care if she hated me.

I didn't care if Evelyn disapproved.

I didn't care if this family tried to destroy my reputation.

Because something inside me had finally broken.

"You pushed me."

Serena shook her head.

"I would never hurt you."

"You did."

"You came at me."

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"You pushed me."

Daniel looked between us.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

A small movement.

But I noticed.

His face changed.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

"Who is it?"

I asked.

Daniel ignored me.

He stepped away.

That was when I knew.

There was more.

There was always more.

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

They lifted me carefully.

One of them asked:

"How did you fall?"

The entire room went quiet.

Everyone waited.

Waiting for my answer.

Waiting to see if I would protect the family name.

Waiting to see if I would stay silent like always.

I looked at Serena.

Then Evelyn.

Then Daniel.

The people who had spent two years teaching me one lesson:

A Whitmore problem stays inside the Whitmore house.

I took a breath.

"I was pushed."

The paramedic looked up.

"By who?"

My eyes never left Serena.

"Serena Whitmore."

The ambulance doors closed.

For the first time that night...

The Whitmore family could not control what happened next.

Two hours later, I woke up in the hospital.

The first thing I heard was my baby's heartbeat.

Strong.

Steady.

Alive.

I cried silently.

Not because I was weak.

Because for the first time all night...

Someone was telling me the truth.

Then Detective Laura Chen entered the room.

She carried a folder.

Not a small one.

A thick one.

My stomach tightened.

"What is that?"

She placed it on the table.

"Something I've been investigating for six months."

I looked at her.

"About Serena?"

Laura shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"About the Whitmore family."

The room suddenly felt colder.

"What do you mean?"

Laura opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank records.

Old reports.

Then she placed one picture in front of me.

A picture of Serena.

Standing beside someone I recognized.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

My blood ran cold.

"Emma..."

Laura's voice softened.

"You need to understand something."

She pointed at the photograph.

"The woman who pushed you tonight may not have been trying to hurt you."

A pause.

"She may have been trying to stop you from discovering the truth."

I stared at the picture.

And for the first time...

May you like

I wondered if falling down those stairs had not been the beginning of my nightmare.

Maybe it had been the moment I finally woke up.
