CHAPTER 13

CHAPTER 13

The Final Betrayal

The letter fell from my hands.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The words remained in front of me.

You were never his daughter.

You were the daughter I chose.

My entire life had been built on questions.

Who was I?

Where did I come from?

Why was I abandoned?

Why did everyone keep secrets from me?

And now, after all the pain...

The answer was not simple.

It was not a name.

It was a choice.

My mother chose me.

Not because of blood.

Not because of inheritance.

Not because of what I could give her.

Because she loved me.

I looked at Thomas.

My father.

The man who had hidden from me for twenty years.

"Did you know?"

His eyes filled with guilt.

"Yes."

The answer hurt.

Again.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

"You knew this whole time?"

I whispered.

Thomas looked down.

"Your mother told me before she died."

"Then why did you let me believe I was abandoned?"

His voice broke.

"Because Richard was still watching."

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to understand.

I wanted to forgive.

But forgiveness was difficult when the wounds were still open.

"Everyone protected me by lying to me."

The words came quietly.

"But nobody asked what it would feel like to discover everything at once."

Thomas had no answer.

Because there wasn't one.

That night, Daniel came to the safe house.

Alone.

No guards.

No family.

Just Daniel.

He looked exhausted.

Like he had aged years in days.

"Emma."

I looked at him.

"How much did you know?"

He froze.

The question hurt him.

But he understood.

"I knew your father was connected to the Whitmores."

"That wasn't my question."

He swallowed.

"I knew your identity was important."

"Important?"

I laughed bitterly.

"My whole life was a secret file to your family."

Daniel looked away.

"I never saw you as a file."

"Then what did you see?"

His eyes met mine.

"You."

For a moment, I believed him.

Because Daniel was many things.

Weak.

Afraid.

Controlled.

But I had never seen him look at me with anything but love.

"I found something."

He said.

"What?"

He handed me a small USB drive.

"My father kept this hidden."

I looked at it.

"Where did you get it?"

"His office."

"Daniel..."

"I broke into my own father's files."

A sad smile appeared.

"I guess I finally became someone he couldn't control."

We opened the files.

Hundreds of documents.

Financial records.

Private messages.

Photos.

Then one folder appeared.

Project Phoenix.

I clicked.

The first document made my blood run cold.

Subject: Emma Carter.

I stopped breathing.

The file contained my entire life.

My orphanage records.

My adoption.

My education.

My marriage.

Everything.

Someone had been watching me.

Since childhood.

Daniel's face became pale.

"He planned everything."

I kept scrolling.

Then I saw it.

A marriage agreement.

Not between Daniel and me.

Between Richard and someone else.

My mother's name.

Isabella Carter.

My hands shook.

"What is this?"

Daniel read it.

His expression changed.

"Your mother and Richard..."

I nodded.

"I know."

But there was something else.

A hidden clause.

If Isabella refuses cooperation, her child will become the successor.

The child.

Me.

Richard didn't want me dead.

He wanted me controlled.

He didn't destroy my identity.

He erased it.

So one day, he could use it.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone became still.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman's voice.

Older.

Weak.

But familiar.

"Emma."

My heart stopped.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then:

"It's your mother."

The world disappeared.

I couldn't speak.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

Thomas stood frozen.

"My mother is dead."

I whispered.

The voice cried softly.

"I know."

Silence.

"Then who are you?"

The answer came.

"I'm the person who promised her I would tell you the truth."

The call was not from Isabella.

It was from someone who had been with her.

Someone who knew what happened at the end.

"Catherine?"

A pause.

"No."

The woman whispered.

"Someone who worked for Richard."

My blood ran cold.

The woman revealed something impossible.

Richard had not acted alone.

There was someone inside the Carter family.

Someone who betrayed Isabella.

Someone who gave Richard information.

"Who?"

I asked.

The woman hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The person you call your father."

I looked at Thomas.

The room went silent.

"No."

My voice broke.

The woman continued.

"Your father loved you."

"But he made one mistake."

"He trusted the wrong person."

The call ended.

Everyone looked at Thomas.

"Emma..."

I stepped back.

"Tell me."

Thomas looked devastated.

"I never betrayed your mother."

"Then why would she say that?"

He closed his eyes.

"Because she didn't know the truth."

Before anyone could continue...

The safe house lights went out.

Darkness.

A sound.

The front door opening.

Daniel immediately moved in front of me.

"Stay behind me."

A figure entered.

Not Richard.

Not one of his men.

Someone unexpected.

Evelyn.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

"I know who betrayed Isabella."

Nobody moved.

"Who?"

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

Then at me.

And finally said:

"The person who has been pretending to help you this entire time."

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked confused.

"Who?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.

"Detective Laura Chen."

The room became silent.

Impossible.

Laura?

The woman who helped us.

The woman who found evidence.

The woman who stood beside me.

Evelyn continued.

"She wasn't investigating Richard."

A pause.

"She was protecting him."

My heart sank.

Because suddenly every piece of evidence had another meaning.

Every discovery.

Every coincidence.

Every moment she appeared at the right time.

The final betrayal was not from an enemy.

It was from the person I trusted most.

The phone rang again.

This time, Laura.

I answered.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Emma."

I said nothing.

She knew.

"You found out."

My hands tightened.

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then Laura said:

"Because your mother asked me to."

I froze.

"What?"

"Isabella didn't trust Richard."

A pause.

"But she didn't trust Thomas either."

The truth was breaking apart again.

Laura whispered:

"Emma..."

"Your mother left one final instruction."

"What?"

"Never let Richard Whitmore find out..."

A pause.

"...that you are not his daughter."

My heart stopped.

The impossible truth returned.

I wasn't Richard's daughter.

But then...

Whose daughter was I?

May you like

And why had everyone spent twenty-four years protecting that secret?
