CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6
The Perfect Family Lie
The message disappeared from my screen.
But the fear remained.
Stop digging, Emma.
Or your baby won't survive.
I read those words until they blurred.
The first time I saw the message, I thought about Serena.
Her anger.
Her jealousy.
Her hatred.
But after everything I had learned...
I wasn't sure anymore.
Serena was cruel.
But cruelty was different from power.
Someone else was controlling the game.
Someone who had been doing this for years.
Someone who knew exactly how to make people disappear.
I looked at Margaret.
"Who could have sent this?"
The old housekeeper looked terrified.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"Who?"
She looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
"You need to leave this house."
I almost laughed.
"Leave?"
"Yes."
"Margaret, someone threatened my baby."
"Exactly."
Her eyes filled with fear.
"And that means they know you are getting close."
The next morning, the news exploded.
Not about the attempted murder.
Not about Serena pushing a pregnant woman down the stairs.
About me.
My face appeared on every screen.
"Whitmore Family Drama: Pregnant Daughter-in-Law Accused of Attacking Sister-in-Law."
I stared at the headline.
For a moment, I couldn't understand.
Then I remembered.
This was the Whitmore way.
Control the story before anyone asks questions.
The video footage from the mansion had been released.
But not the full footage.
Only thirty seconds.
The part where I walked toward Serena.
The part before she pushed me.
The part that made it look like I was the attacker.
I watched the clip again.
My hands shook.
They weren't just hiding the truth.
They were rewriting reality.
Daniel arrived at the hospital before noon.
This time, he didn't walk in like my husband.
He walked in like someone asking permission.
"Emma."
I didn't look away from the television.
"Did you see the news?"
His silence answered.
"You knew."
"No."
"You knew they would do this."
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I knew my mother would protect Serena."
I turned.
"Protect?"
My voice sharpened.
"She framed me."
"I know."
"She almost killed our child."
"I know."
"Then why are you standing there?"
The question broke him.
Because there was no answer that could make him look innocent.
"I am trying to fix it."
I stared.
"You always say that."
A pause.
"Daniel, when exactly were you planning to start?"
He sat down.
For once, he didn't defend his family.
"I found something."
I became still.
"What?"
He took out a file.
Not from his mother.
Not from the company.
From himself.
"I kept copies."
I looked at him.
"Of what?"
"The things my mother didn't want anyone to see."
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Financial records.
My father's name appeared repeatedly.
Thomas Carter.
But there was something else.
A company name.
Carter & Whitmore International.
I frowned.
"My father worked with Whitmore?"
Daniel nodded.
"Before I was born."
"Then why did everyone tell me he was just a businessman?"
"Because he wasn't just a businessman."
Daniel looked at me.
"He was supposed to become the next head of the Whitmore empire."
I froze.
"What?"
"My grandfather chose him."
The room went silent.
"Not Evelyn?"
"No."
"Not her husband?"
"No."
"Your family chose my father?"
Daniel nodded.
"And Evelyn couldn't accept it."
Suddenly everything changed.
The hatred.
The secrets.
The inheritance.
My father wasn't an outsider.
He was the person who was supposed to replace them.
"Then why did he die?"
Daniel looked away.
"Because he refused to play by their rules."
I remembered the document.
The house of Whitmore rules.
A system built around obedience.
My father broke the rules.
And someone punished him.
Later that afternoon, Detective Laura Chen arrived.
She placed a tablet on the table.
"We found something."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"The original security footage."
My heart stopped.
"From the staircase?"
She nodded.
"Someone deleted it from the mansion system."
"Who?"
Laura looked at Daniel.
"Your husband."
The room became silent.
I turned slowly.
Daniel looked horrified.
"What?"
Laura continued.
"The deletion happened using Daniel Whitmore's access code."
I stared at him.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Because even after everything...
A small part of me still wanted to believe.
"Daniel."
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
"I didn't delete it."
"Then why is your code there?"
He had no answer.
And once again...
Silence.
But this time, I didn't see guilt.
I saw fear.
Real fear.
"Someone used my account."
Laura nodded.
"That's what I believe."
She opened another file.
"Because someone also accessed your father's records using Daniel's identity."
My eyes widened.
"Someone is framing him too."
Laura looked at me.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because the person behind this wants everyone to turn against each other."
That evening, something unexpected happened.
Serena came to the hospital.
Alone.
No Evelyn.
No lawyers.
No cameras.
Just Serena.
I almost called security.
But something stopped me.
Her face looked different.
Not confident.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
"Why are you here?"
I asked.
She closed the door.
"I need to tell you the truth."
I laughed bitterly.
"Now?"
She swallowed.
"Before it's too late."
For the first time...
Serena looked like a person.
Not a monster.
"I didn't push you because I wanted you dead."
My eyes narrowed.
"You pushed me."
"Yes."
She looked down.
"But because I knew someone else was coming."
I froze.
"What?"
Serena's voice shook.
"That night, I saw someone near the staircase."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Then why didn't you tell anyone?"
Her eyes filled.
"Because I was told not to."
"By who?"
Serena looked at the door.
Like she was afraid someone was outside.
Then she whispered:
"My mother."
I stared.
"Evelyn?"
Serena nodded.
"She told me if I didn't follow her instructions..."
A tear fell.
"She would make sure I disappeared like Catherine."
The room went cold.
Before I could ask anything else...
The lights went out.
The hospital room became completely dark.
Then the door opened.
A shadow appeared.
Someone stepped inside.
Serena grabbed my arm.
"Don't trust anyone."
The emergency lights turned on.
The room was empty.
Except for one thing.
On my hospital bed was a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Emma Carter.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
Alive.
Taken three days before his reported death.
And on the back...
A message.
Your father didn't die that night.
I stopped breathing.
The next line destroyed everything I believed.
He was helped to disappear.
I looked at Serena.
She was crying.
Because she knew.
The perfect Whitmore family had never been perfect.
It had been a performance.
A beautiful lie.
May you like
And someone was finally about to tear down the stage.
