CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER 8

The Mother-in-Law’s Warning

The letter burned in my hands.

Not literally.

But it felt like it.

A single sentence had destroyed the one belief I had held onto my entire life.

Emma, if you ever find this, do not trust your father.

My father.

The man standing across from me.

The man who had just told me he disappeared to protect me.

The man I had spent twenty years mourning.

I looked at Thomas Carter.

He didn't look angry.

He didn't look surprised.

He looked tired.

Like he had been waiting for this moment for a very long time.

"Who wrote this?"

I asked.

He didn't answer immediately.

"My mother?"

His eyes lowered.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"Then she knew you were alive."

A pause.

"Yes."

I stepped back.

"Everyone knew something except me."

The bitterness in my voice surprised even me.

Thomas looked away.

"Emma..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Twenty years."

My voice cracked.

"Twenty years I thought I lost my father."

"You did lose me."

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because he wasn't trying to deny it.

"I was alive."

He whispered.

"But I was not your father."

Silence.

On the drive back, I said nothing.

Detective Laura Chen drove.

She didn't ask questions.

She understood.

Sometimes the truth didn't bring relief.

Sometimes it only created more pain.

When we arrived at the hospital, Daniel was waiting.

The moment he saw my face, he knew something had happened.

"What happened?"

I looked at him.

For once, I didn't know whether I wanted him close or far away.

"My father is alive."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

I handed him the letter.

He read it.

His expression changed.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother knew."

I looked at him.

"You knew too?"

"No."

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I studied him.

"Daniel."

"I swear."

For the first time in days...

I believed him.

Because his reaction was real.

He was shocked.

Not pretending.

That night, I received another message.

Not from an unknown number.

From Evelyn Whitmore.

We need to talk. Alone.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel saw it.

"Don't go."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because my mother never asks to talk unless she already has a plan."

I almost smiled.

"You finally learned."

The pain on his face was immediate.

"I know."

A pause.

"I should have learned sooner."

I met Evelyn the next morning.

Not at the mansion.

At an old private garden behind the Whitmore estate.

A place I had never been invited to.

She was sitting alone.

No lawyers.

No servants.

No performance.

Just Evelyn.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Old.

"You found Thomas."

It wasn't a question.

I sat across from her.

"Yes."

She closed her eyes.

"I hoped that day would never come."

"Why?"

She looked at me.

"Because once you know the truth, you will hate everyone."

I laughed softly.

"Isn't that already happening?"

Evelyn accepted the answer.

She folded her hands.

"Your father is alive because I allowed him to be."

I stared.

"What?"

"He was supposed to die that night."

The words froze me.

"Who wanted him dead?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

"Who?"

She looked away.

"Someone more powerful than me."

I leaned forward.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

She looked at me.

"I expect you to understand."

"Understand what?"

"That the Whitmore family is not controlled by one person."

A pause.

"It is controlled by fear."

She told me about the night my father disappeared.

Thomas discovered financial crimes within the company.

He planned to expose everything.

But someone inside the family found out.

Someone who had access.

Someone trusted.

"They tried to kill him."

Evelyn said.

"But you saved him?"

Her eyes changed.

Regret.

"Yes."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You saved the man who could destroy your family?"

"I saved the man who saved my life once."

The answer surprised me.

Because it meant Evelyn was not the beginning of the story.

She was only another chapter.

"Why did you treat me like that?"

I asked.

The question seemed to hurt her.

"Because I knew who you were."

"You knew I was Carter's daughter."

"Yes."

"Then why let Daniel marry me?"

She looked at me.

"Because Daniel loved you."

A bitter smile appeared.

"And because I believed love would make him weak."

My stomach tightened.

"You used him."

"Yes."

No excuse.

No denial.

Just honesty.

"I raised Daniel to protect this family."

She looked down.

"But I forgot he was a person."

I stood.

"I don't know whether to believe you."

"You shouldn't."

The answer surprised me.

"Evelyn?"

She looked at me seriously.

"Never trust anyone completely."

A pause.

"Not even me."

Before I left, she handed me an envelope.

"What is this?"

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"Of who actually ordered Thomas Carter's death."

My fingers tightened around it.

"Why give this to me?"

Her eyes became cold.

"Because the person who did it is preparing to destroy you."

I opened the envelope in the car.

Inside was a document.

A transfer record.

The date:

One week before my father's disappearance.

The sender:

An account belonging to...

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew the name.

I had seen it before.

The person who had comforted me.

The person who claimed to protect the family.

The person everyone trusted.

Daniel Whitmore.

My hands shook.

"No."

I looked again.

The evidence was clear.

A payment.

A secret account.

A transaction connected to my father's disappearance.

When I returned to the hospital, Daniel was waiting.

He smiled when he saw me.

Then he noticed my expression.

"What happened?"

I slowly placed the document on the table.

His smile disappeared.

"Emma..."

"Tell me the truth."

Silence.

Again.

The same silence.

The silence that destroyed us.

"Did you pay someone to make my father disappear?"

Daniel's face went completely pale.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

But his eyes...

His eyes were not shocked.

They were terrified.

"Emma, listen to me."

"Why is your name on this?"

"I don't know."

"Why does Evelyn have this?"

"I don't know."

"Why does everyone keep lying to me?"

My voice broke.

Daniel stepped closer.

But I moved away.

Because suddenly I didn't know who I was looking at.

My husband.

Or another person wearing his face.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

"I didn't kill your father."

A pause.

"But I know who did."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at the door.

Like he was afraid someone would hear.

Then whispered:

"The person who raised me."

I stared at him.

"Evelyn?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

His voice became smaller.

"The person who raised my mother."

The room went silent.

Because suddenly I understood.

The Whitmore family was not hiding one secret.

They were hiding generations of them.

And the person at the center of everything...

May you like

Was someone nobody had suspected.
