CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2
The Secret Behind the Documents
The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the sound.
A heartbeat.
Not mine.
My baby's.
The monitor beside my bed kept a steady rhythm.
Fast.
Small.
Alive.
I stared at the ceiling for several seconds, trying to remember where I was.
Then everything returned.
The staircase.
The marble floor.
The pain.
Serena's hands.
Daniel standing there.
Watching.
My hand immediately moved to my stomach.
A nurse noticed.
"Your baby is doing well."
Her smile was gentle.
"You were lucky."
Lucky.
That word almost made me laugh.
Because luck was not what brought me here.
Someone wanted me here.
"Your husband has been waiting outside."
The nurse hesitated.
"Do you want me to let him in?"
I looked toward the door.
A part of me wanted to say yes.
The old Emma would have said yes.
The woman who believed love meant patience.
Understanding.
Forgiving.
But that woman had been lying on the marble floor while everyone accused her.
"No."
The nurse looked surprised.
"No?"
"Not yet."
For the first time in years...
I chose myself.
An hour later, Detective Laura Chen entered my room.
She carried the same folder from last night.
The folder that had changed everything.
She placed it on the table.
"How are you feeling?"
I looked at her.
"Like someone tried to kill me."
Laura did not correct me.
That scared me more than if she had.
"You believe Serena meant to hurt you?"
"I know she pushed me."
Laura nodded.
"I believe you."
Those three words almost broke me.
Because after everything that happened...
They were the first words of support I had heard.
"But Serena is not the only problem."
I looked at the folder.
"What is inside?"
Laura opened it.
The first document was a bank statement.
Whitmore Holdings.
Private account.
Transferred amount:
$2,800,000.
"What's this?"
"Money moved six months ago."
"By who?"
Laura turned the page.
"Daniel Whitmore."
My heart sank.
"No."
The word came out automatically.
Laura studied me.
"Emma."
"No."
I shook my head.
"Daniel would never steal from his own company."
"I didn't say steal."
She replied.
"Yet."
The word stayed between us.
I looked back at the document.
Daniel's signature.
His handwriting.
His approval.
A strange feeling entered my chest.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something worse.
Confusion.
Because betrayal was easier when you hated someone.
The hardest betrayal was when you still loved them.
"Why would he move this money?"
I whispered.
Laura placed another file down.
"This is why I started investigating."
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
Older.
Standing outside the Whitmore mansion.
I recognized her.
"Who is she?"
Laura looked at me.
"Daniel's aunt."
I frowned.
"Daniel never mentioned an aunt."
"Exactly."
I turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
Twenty years ago.
"What does she have to do with Serena?"
Laura's expression changed.
"Everything."
Six months earlier.
Laura had been investigating a missing-person case.
A woman named Catherine Whitmore.
Daniel's aunt.
The official story was simple:
She left the family voluntarily.
She moved away.
She wanted nothing to do with the Whitmores.
But Laura discovered something strange.
Catherine didn't leave.
She disappeared.
Her bank accounts were closed.
Her property was transferred.
Her personal records were altered.
And the person who signed the final transfer...
Was Evelyn Whitmore.
My mother-in-law.
I stared at Laura.
"You're saying Evelyn made someone disappear?"
"I'm saying Evelyn has a history of controlling people who threaten her."
I thought about Serena's tears.
Evelyn protecting her.
Daniel staying silent.
A family built on fear.
"Why are you telling me this?"
I asked.
Laura leaned forward.
"Because Catherine was investigating something before she disappeared."
"What?"
"The Whitmore inheritance."
I felt a chill.
"Daniel's family already has everything."
"That's what everyone thinks."
Laura pulled out another document.
"This is the original inheritance agreement."
I read the first page.
Then stopped.
My name was there.
Emma Rose Carter.
I stared.
"What is this?"
Laura watched my reaction carefully.
"That is what I have been trying to find out."
My hands began shaking.
"My maiden name is Carter."
"I know."
"But why would my name be in Whitmore documents?"
Laura was quiet.
Then she said:
"Because your father was not the person you thought he was."
The room became silent.
I hated that sentence.
Because it was the kind of sentence that destroyed a person's entire life.
"What are you saying?"
Laura opened another file.
Inside was an old newspaper article.
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DIES IN MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT.
The man's name:
Thomas Carter.
My father.
I stopped breathing.
"My father died when I was eight."
Laura nodded.
"That's what the records say."
"What do you mean?"
She looked at me.
"Emma, your father's death was investigated."
"Yes."
"And the investigation was closed within forty-eight hours."
I felt cold.
"Why?"
"Because the person who approved closing the investigation..."
She turned the page.
"Evelyn Whitmore."
I didn't speak.
I couldn't.
My whole life had suddenly become a story someone else wrote.
My father's death.
My marriage.
My place in the Whitmore family.
Everything.
"Why would Evelyn be involved with my father?"
Laura sighed.
"That's the question."
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at his name.
Laura watched me.
"Are you going to answer?"
I didn't know.
Part of me wanted answers.
Part of me wanted to throw the phone away.
Finally, I accepted.
"Emma."
Daniel's voice sounded exhausted.
"Are you okay?"
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Silence.
That silence told me everything.
"Tell you what?"
"About the documents."
Another silence.
"Emma..."
"Your signature is on them, Daniel."
He didn't deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
"Where are you?"
I asked.
"At the mansion."
Of course.
"With your mother?"
Silence.
"Daniel."
Finally:
"Yes."
I laughed quietly.
"Of course you are."
"Emma, listen to me."
"No."
My voice became steady.
"You listen to me."
A pause.
"For two years, I defended you."
"I defended your family."
"I told myself Serena was just difficult."
"I told myself your mother was just controlling."
"I told myself you were different."
My throat tightened.
"But you knew."
"Emma—"
"You knew something."
The silence returned.
And this time...
I had my answer.
"I need space."
"Emma."
"No."
I looked at Laura.
At the documents.
At the proof that my entire life had hidden pieces.
"Do not come here until you are ready to tell me the truth."
I ended the call.
For several minutes, neither Laura nor I spoke.
Then Laura said something I would never forget.
"Emma."
I looked at her.
"Your fall was not the first attempt to silence you."
My blood turned cold.
"What?"
She opened one final file.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph from three months earlier.
My car.
After the brakes failed.
I remembered that day.
Everyone said it was an accident.
Laura pointed at the image.
"The mechanic found evidence."
"What evidence?"
She looked directly at me.
"The brake lines were cut."
The room became silent.
Suddenly, Serena pushing me down the stairs felt different.
It wasn't an isolated moment.
Someone had been trying to remove me for months.
And now I understood something terrifying.
The Whitmore family wasn't trying to protect a secret.
May you like
They were trying to bury me with it.
